  • To calculate the wave pressure acting on coastal structures under the design wave condition, it is often necessary to numerically reproduce the big standing wave profiles close to wave breaking condition. For this, the governing equation and all nonlinear terms occurring in boundary conditions should be effectively considered in the numerical wave profile. In particular, the velocity square term in the free surface boundary condition is very important. A boundary element method is applied here to calculate the standing wave profile with the velocity square term fully treated by Newton iterative method. In order to check the validity of the method, the numerical wave profiles are compared to ones calculated by the perturbation method, the Fourier approximation method and the hydraulic experiment.

  • This study was designed to examine the effects of temporary immobilization of the ankle and knee joints on standing in healthy young adults with the use of a postural control mechanism. The subjects were twenty-four college students (12 males and 12 females, aged between 20 and 28). A Biodex balance system SD 950-302 and its software were used to measure indirect balance parameters in standing. Each subject underwent postural stability tests in 4-different joint conditions: free joints, ankle immobilization only, knee immobilization only, and ankle and knee immobilization. In addition, the postural stability test was conducted once with the subject's eyes open and once with the eyes closed conditions. For data analysis of the postural stability tests, the overall stability index, antero-posterior stability index, and medio-lateral stability index were recorded. The overall stability index (p=.000) and medial-lateral index (p=.003) were significantly greater different conditions with eyes closed in postural stability. Therefore, the eyes closed condition is expected to be used as an effective postural stability training for treatment planning in patients with unstable postures. In addition, training based on the dynamic multi-segment model can improve postural stability and is available to therapeutic programs, helping people with unstable balance to reduce their risk of falling.

  • To study the dynamic response of a rigid block standing unrestrained on a rigid foundation which shakes horizontally, four modes of motion can be identified, i.e., rest, slide, rock, and slide and rock. The occurrence of each of these four modes and the transition between any two modes depend on the parametric values specified, the initial conditions, and the magnitude of ground acceleration. In this paper, a general two-dimensional theory is presented for dealing with the various modes of a free-standing rigid block, considering in particular the impact occurring during the rocking motion. Through selection of proper values for the system parameters, the occurrence of each of the four modes and the transition between different modes are demonstrated in the numerical examples.

  • Bacteria play a major role in the etiology of apical periodontitis. Traditionally it has been held the microorganisms are present in necrotic tissue in the root canal system and in tubules of the root dentin whereas the periapical tissues are free of bacteria. However, it is reported the presence of bacterial in the periapical lesions. They may form the biofilm and survive in the periapical tissues. Especially high incidence of biofilm is reported in the refractory periapical lesions. treatment was presented in the left maxillary first premolar with a long-standing fistula and apical calculus. Also. the role of biofilm and its treatment were discussed.

  • Experimental evidence suggests that spin pinning conditions for standing spin mode in polycrystalline $Ni_{84}Fe_{16}$ alloy film, is confirmed using the four categories of Camley et al. and the value of q$\bot$ for the pinning conditions, this was achieved by performing Brillouin light scattering measurements. The value of q$\bot$ was observed, in order to increase at a rate of $\pi$/2 with an increasing mode number. With this condition, the coexistence of standing spin wave modes was shown, with intermediate pinning, in addition to free and strong pinning. The values for spin-wave-stiffness constant ($D_B$), g-factor (g), and surface magnetization (4$\pi$M) of the Permalloy film were obtained from the results of BLS, and determined to be $D_B=1.85{\pm}0.05Oecm^2$, $g=2.11{\pm}0.02$, and 4$\pi$M=8.7 kG, respectively.

  • The fabrication process for miniaturizing the Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) sensor was studied using micromachining technique. Two types of sensor structure, free standing membrane type and diving beard type, were proposed and researched for establishing the fabrication process. The membrane type structure was easy to change the sensor shape but had the limitation for miniaturizing, because the size of the sensor depends on the silicon substrate thickness. The diving board type structure has the advantage of miniaturization and of free motion. Since the elastic modulus is not trio high, SiN film is expected to be adequate for the supporting membrane of magnetic sensor. The selectivity of $H_2O_2$for sputtered W with respect to Fe-B-Si, which was studded for magnetic sensor materials, was high enough to be removed after using as a protection layer. Therefore, the diving board type process using the silicon nitride film for the supporter of the sensor material and the sputtered W for protection layer is expected to be useful fur miniaturizing the Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) sensor.

  • The two-dimensional sloshing problem in a rigid rectangular tank with a free surface is considered. The flow is generated by a container in harmonic motion in time along the horizontal axis, i.e., a container excited by u=Asin($2{\pi}ft$) where u denotes the container velocity imposed externally, A is the amplitude of the oscillation velocity, and f is the frequency of oscillation. Experimental apparatus is arranged to investigate the large-amplitude sloshing flows in off-resonant conditions, where the large amplitude means that A~O(1), and the distance, S, is comparable to the breadth, L, of the container, i.e., L/S~O(1). Comprehensive particle image velocimetry (PIV) data are obtained, which show that the flow physics of the nonlinear off-resonant sloshing problem can be characterized into three peculiar free surface motions: standing-wave motions similar to those of linear sloshing, a run-up phenomenon along the vertical sidewall at the moment of turn-over of the container, and gradually propagating bore motion from the sidewall to the interior fluid region, like a hydraulic jump.

  • The electrochemical sensing performance of metal-graphene hybrid based sensor may be significantly decreased due to the dissolution and aggregation of metal catalyst during operation. For the first time, we developed a novel large-area high quality three dimensional graphene foam-incorporated gold nanoparticles (3D-GF@Au) via chemical vapor deposition method and employed as free-standing electrocatalysis for non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose detection. 3D-GF@Au based sensor is capable to detect glucose with a wide linear detection range of $2.5{\mu}M$ to 11.6 mM, remarkable low detection limit of $1{\mu}M$, high selectivity, and good stability. This was resulted from enhanced electrochemical active sites and charge transfer possibility due to the stable and uniform distribution of Au NPs along with the enhanced interactions between Au and GF. The obtained results indicated that 3D-GF@Au hybrid can be expected as a high quality candidate for non-enzymatic glucose sensor application.

  • Standing crop distribution of aquatic plants in the West Nakdong River and riparian wetlands in the Nakdong River were surveyed in May, July and September, 2010. Total 25 aquatic macrophyte species (submerged: 9, leaf-floating: 3, free-floating: 5, emergent: 8) were observed during the survey periods. Distribution area of aquatic plants and proportion of submerged communities were highest in Garakchi-deung ($212,032m^2$, 72.7%). The distribution area of aquatic plants was highest in Phragmites australis community ($421,584m^2$), followed by Hydrilla verticillata-Vallisneria natans community ($181,511m^2$), Potamogeton wrightii-Vallisneria natans community ($61,604m^2$), and Hydrocharis dubia community ($49,709m^2$). Garakch-ideung (212,032 kg) also had the highest aquatic plant production, followed by Suanchi-deung (15,546 kg), Daedong (5,813 kg), Dunchi-do (3,963 kg), Maekdo (1,463 kg), Yeommak (571 kg), Jungsa-do (530 kg), and Shinan (300 kg). Average standing crop of the study area were $147.8{\pm}20.8g\;DW{\cdot}m^{-2}$ in 1988, $96.1{\pm}20.0g\;DW{\cdot}m^{-2}$ in 2000, and $172.6{\pm}76.1g\;DW{\cdot}m^{-2}$ in 2010. For a sustainable management of river habitat and food source, aquatic plant should concurrently be surveyed with river environmental variables (i.e. sediment, nutrient, flow).

  • In this paper, we report that selective etching on N-polar face by EC (electro-chemical)-etching effect on the reduction of bowing and strain of FS (free-standing)-GaN substrates. We applied the EC-etching to concave and convex type of FS-GaN substrates. After the EC-etching for FS-GaN, nano porous structure was formed on N-polar face of concave and convex type of FS-GaN. Consequently, the bowing in the convex type of FS-GaN substrate was decreased but the bowing in the concave type of FS-GaN substrate was increased. Furthermore, the FWHM (full width at half maximum) of (1 0 2) reflection for the convex type of FS-GaN was significantly decreased from 601 to 259 arcsec. In the case, we confirmed that the EC-etching method was very effective to reduce the bowing in the convex type of FS-GaN and the compressive stress in N-polar face of convex type of FS-GaN was fully released by Raman measurement.
