  • Ro09-0198, a cyclic peptide isolated from culture filtrates of Streptoverticillium griseove-rticillatum, induced platelet aggregation and serotonin release simultaneously. LDH release was not observed. Addition of peptide to rat platelet, loaded with $Ca^{2+}$ chelator quin-2, caused immediate rise in cytosolic free $Ca^{2+}$. Liposomal membrane containing phosphatidylethanolamine was damaged by peptide and released $^{45}Ca$ dose dependently.

  • This paper is concerned with formaldehyde release from durable press finished rayon fabrics. $100\%$ rayon fabrics were treated with 3 kinds of commercial N-methylol crosslinking agents using a pad-dry cure technique. Aqueous extractions of fabric samples were carried out at $40^{\circ}C$ under pH's of 4, 7, 10. Formaldehyde release was evaluated for the types of resins, catalyst concentrations and extraction conditions. Results indicated that the higher concentration of catalyst leads to the more fixation of resin on the fabric. Total formaldehyde released to the extract was decreased as the catalyst concentration increased. For the resin types, the amount of formaldehyde released was in the order of DMU>MDMDHEU>DMDHEU. Free formaldehyde content in the extract was in the order of pH10>pH4>pH7. This result proved that resins are least resistant to alkaline hydrolysis and the N-C bond cleavage under alkaline condition. Under acidic condition, however, N-methylol formaldehyde was accumulated before the release of free formaldehyde. This suggested the C·0 bond cleavalge to form carbonium - immonim intermediate.

  • The objectives of this study were to investigate the influence of gamma irradiation for sterilization on poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) with different molecular weight and the effect of gamma irradiation on the release behavior of 1,3-bis(2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea (BCNU, carmustine) from PLGA wafer with various irradiation doses. The effect of gamma irradiation on PLGA was evaluated by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The weight average molecular weight (M$_{w}$) and glass transition temperature (T$_{g}$) of PLGA decreased after gamma irradiation. The extent of M$_{w}$ reduction was dependent on irradiation dose and PLGA molecular weight. Using EPR spectroscopy, we successfully detected gamma irradiation induced free radicals in PLGA. The gamma irradiation increased the release rate of BCNU from PLGA wafer at applied irradiation doses except 2.5 Mrad of irradiation dose in this study.study.

  • This paper presets experimental and analytical studies of ultimate strength of [$[30_2/-30_2/90]_S$ carbon/epoxy laminates with free-edge delamination under uniaxial tension. We performed tensile teat far laminates with Telflon inserted on interfaces to simulate initial free-edge delamination, The experiment reveals that extensional stiffness of the laminate decreases by the initiation of the delamination, and that strength of the laminate without delamination is smaller than that of the laminates with delamination. Generalized quasi-three delamination finite element analysis, which employs energy release rate and maximum stress criteria, predicts the ultimate strength of the laminates with sufficient accuracy.

  • An anatomically normal first web space is essential for optimal prehensile movements of the thumb and hand. A 28-year-old woman presented with severe scarring and contractures of the first web space of both hands, following a flame burn injury sustained 25 years prior to presentation. First web space contracture may occur secondary to severe injuries, burns (as observed in our patient), or congenital hand anomalies. A significant amount of additional skin is required to release a severe first web space contracture. Reconstruction of wide areas of contractures using only local flaps is challenging. Among other free flaps used in clinical practice, the thinned lateral arm free flap provides flexible vascularized tissue for reconstruction of the skin after severe first web space contracture release. Reconstruction using lateral arm free flaps facilitated thumb abduction and opposition (which were initially difficult) and improved hand function in our patient.

  • Biodegradable microspheres were prepared with poly(L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA, 75 : 25 by mole ratio) by an oil/oil solvent evaporation method for the sustained release of anti-AIDS virus agent, AZT The microspheres of relatively narrow size distribution (7.6$\pm$ 3.8 ㎛) were obtained by controlling the fabrication conditions. The shape of microspheres prepared was smooth and spherical. The efficiency of AZT loading into the PLGA microsphere was over 93% compared to that below 15% for microspheres by a conventional water/oil/water method. The effects of Preparation conditions on the morphology and in vitro AZT release pattern were investigated. in vitro release studies showed that different release pattern and release rates could be achieved by simply modifying factors in the fabrication conditions such as the type and amount of surfactant, initial amount of loaded drug, the temperature of solvent evaporation, and so on. PLCA microspheres prepared by 5% of initial drug loading, 1.0% (w/w) of surfactant concentration, and 25$\^{C}$ of solvent evaporation temperature were free from initial burst effect and a near-zero order sustained release was observed. Possible mechanisms of the near-zero order sustained release for our system have been proposed.

  • Target-sensitive(TG-S) liposomes, which have the antibodies coupled on the surface of liposome and can release their entrapped contents by the binding of antibodies with the specigic target cells, were prepared and employed to study the release of calcein and the selective delivery of an anticancer agent, doxorubicin(DOX). The monoclonal antibody, Y3, used for the preparation of the TG-S liposome was one against major histocompatibility complex class 1 of mouse(MHCI, H-2Kbtype) and the target cells were EL-4 and RMA, which have the MHC1, H-2Kbtype on their membrane surfacem. The release of calcein from TG-S liposome occurred when the target cells were contacted with liposomes and it was proportionally increased with the rise of binding capacity of antibody coupled on the surface of liposome to the target cells. The experimental results of drug delivery were similar to the cases of calcein release. The viability of specific target cell, EL-4 with liposomal DOX was not so different from that with the free DOX, while for the non-specific target cell, Yacl(H-2Kf), the cell viability with Iiposomal DOX was much higher than that with free DOX. This shows the fact that the liposomal DOX can be efficiently delivered to the specific target cells, while it was not the case for the non-specific target cells. And the drug delivery was lnhibited when the free antibody of Y3 was added in the contact process between EL-4 and TG-S liposomes, which means the drug delivery occurred mainly by the destabilization of TG-S liposomes. From these results, we could conclude that the selective drug delivery to specific target cell using the TG-S liposome would be feasible.

  • This study examined the effects of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), ${\alpha}-amino$-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionic acid (AMPA) and kainate on basal and electrically-evoked release of acetylcholine (ACh) from the rat hippocampal and striatal slices which were preincubated with $[^3H]choline$. Unexpectedly, the basal and evoked ACh release were not affected at all by the treatment with NMDA $(3{\sim}100{\mu}M)$, AMPA $(1{\sim}100{\mu}M)$ or kainate $(1{\sim}100{\mu}M)$ in hippocampal slices. However, in striatal slices, under the $Mg^{2+}-free$ medium, $30{\mu}M$ NMDA increased the basal ACh release with significant decrease of the electrically-evoked releases. The treatment with $1{\mu}M MK-801 not only reversed the $30{\mu}M$ NMDA-induced decrease of the evoked ACh release, but also attenuated the facilitatory effect of $30\;{\mu}M$ NMDA on the basal ACh release. The treatment with either $30\;{\mu}M$ AMPA or $100\;{\mu}M$ kainate increased the basal ACh release without any effects on the evoked release. The treatment with $10{\mu}M$ NBQX abolished the AMPA- or kainate-induced increase of the basal ACh release. Interestingly, NBQX significantly attenuated the evoked release when it was treated with AMPA, although it did not affect the evoked release alone without AMPA. These observations demonstrate that in hippocampal slices, ionotropic glutamate receptors do not modulate the ACh release in cholinergic terminals, whereas in striatal slices, activations of ionotropic glutamate receptors increase the basal ACh release though NMDA may decrease the electrically-evoked ACh release.

  • The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether correlations exist between balance and impact velocity, angular position, and maximum velocity of a club during drive swing. Twelve skilled golfers were recruited in this study. They were asked to perform ten swing trials and two trials were selected for analysis. Balance parameters were calculated via the force platform while kinematic variables were determined by using the Qualisys system. The results of the present study demonstrated that the average of COP velocity was faster in the medio-lateral direction rather than the anterio-posterior direction. Also, left foot's COP velocity and free torque were greater than the right foot's before impact. The range of the right foot's COP in the anterio-posterior direction before impact were correlated with the club velocity and angular position at impact. There was a negative correlation between the left foot's COP velocity before the impact and the velocity at impact. Additionally, the range and RMS of the left foot's free torque affected on the club angular position at impact and the maximum velocity at release, respectively. Finally, a negative correlation existed between the range of the right foot's free torque after the impact and club's maximum velocity at release.

  • The Purpose of this study was to examine the kinematic analysis of the upper-limb motion of wheelchair basketball free throw shooting. Three-dimensional kinematic data were obtained from 8 male wheelchair basketball players performing a successful free throw. Players were divided into three groups, according to their IWBF classification(Group 1: 1 point players, Group 2: 2-2.5point players and Group 3:3.5-4 point players) Wheelchair basketball free throw motions were taken by video camera. The three-dimensional coordinates was processed by DLT. Players from Group 1 and 2 tended to release the ball from a lower height, with greater velocity and release angle. Players from Group 1 showed greater shoulder horizontal adduction and horizontal abduction angle, wrist ulnar flexion and radial flexion angle, and trunk angle. but players from Group 2 appeared lower shoulder abduction. Upper limb angular velocity showed most greatly in hands from Group 1, upperarm from Group 2, and forearm from Group 3.
