The nonlinear formulation using the principle of virtual work-energy for free vibration of a large-sag extensible catenary riser in two dimensions is presented in this paper. A support at one end is hinged and the other is a free-sliding roller in the horizontal direction. The catenary riser has a large-sag configuration in the static equilibrium state and is assumed to displace with large amplitude to the motion state. The total virtual work of the catenary riser system involves the virtual strain energy due to bending, the virtual strain energy due to axial deformation, the virtual work done by the effective weight, and the inertia forces. The nonlinear equations of motion for two-dimensional free vibration in the Cartesian coordinate system is developed based on the difference between the Euler's equations in the static state and the displaced state. The linear and nonlinear stiffness matrices of the catenary riser are obtained and the eigenvalue problem is solved using the Galerkin finite element procedure. The natural frequencies and mode shapes are obtained. The results are validated with regard to the reference research addressing the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed nonlinear formulation. The numerical results for free vibration and the effect of the nonlinear behavior for catenary riser are presented.
In case of considering the shear effect, the complete solutions are obtained for dynamic plastic response of a rigid, perfectly plastic hinged-free beam, of which one end is hinged and the other end free, subjected to a transverse strike by a travelling rigid mass at an arbitrary location along its span. Special attention is paid to new deformation mechanisms due to shear sliding on both sides of the rigid mass and the plastic energy dissipation. The dimensionless numerical results demonstrate that three parameters, i.e., mass ratio, impact position of mass, as well as the non-dimensional fully plastic shear force, have significant influence on the partitioning of dissipated energy and failure mode of the hingedfree beam. The shear effect can never be negligible when the mass ratio is comparatively small and the impact location of mass is close to the hinged end.

In this paper, an improved GA-based damage detection algorithm using a set of combined modal features is proposed. Firstly, a new GA-based damage detection algorithm is formulated for beam-type structures. A schematic of the GA-based damage detection algorithm is designed and objective functions using several modal features are selected for the algorithm. Secondly, experimental modal tests are performed on free-free beams. Modal features such as natural frequency, mode shape, and modal strain energy are experimentally measured before and after damage in the test beams. Finally, damage detection exercises are performed on the test beam to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed method. Experimental results show that the damage detection is the most accurate when frequency changes combined with modal strain-energy changes are used as the modal features for the proposed method.
The aim of this experimental study is to investigate the free vibration and buckling behaviors of hybrid composite beams having different span lengths and orientation angles subjected to different impact energy levels. The impact energies are applied in range from 10 J to 30 J. Free vibration and buckling behaviors of intact and impacted hybrid composite beams are compared with each other for different span lengths, orientation angles and impact levels. In free vibration analysis, the first three modes of hybrid beams are considered and natural frequencies are normalized. It is seen that first and second modes are mostly affected with increasing impact energy level. Also, the fundamental natural frequency is mostly affected with the usage of mold that have 40 mm span length (SP40). Moreover, as the impact energy increases, the normalized critical buckling loads decrease gradually for $0^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$ oriented hybrid beams but they fluctuate for the other beams.
Plastic bonded explosive(PBX) is mainly composed of the nitramine explosives, RDX, HMX, and polymer binders. When the adhesion between nitramine crystals and binder is not particularly strong and can be failed under stress, dewetting occurs rather suddenly and this leads to a significant drop in tensile strength of explosives. Mechnical property of plastic bonded explosive depends on the surface characteristics of filler and binder. In order to design for better adhesion, an understanding of the surface properties of explosive and binder is essential. In this study, 2 kinds of RDX and 4 kinds of ethylene vinyl acetate copolymers are selected, since they are widely used in many plastic bonded explosives. The technical objective of this investigation is to calculate for the surface free energy of RDX and EVA using theory of Fowkes, van Oss, Neumann approaches and Kaelble equation and to predict the interaction between filler and binder from their surface free energies.
A key comparison has been made between the air-kerma standards of the National Institute of Metrology (NIM), China, and other Asia Pacific Metrology Programme (APMP) members in the medium-energy X-ray. This paper reviews the primary standard Free-air ionization chamber correction factor experimental method and Monte Carlo simulation method in the NIM. The experimental method and the Monte Carlo simulation method are adopted to obtain the correction factor for the medium-energy X-ray primary standard free-air ionization chamber at 100 kV, 135 kV, 180 kV, 250 kV four CCRI reference qualities. The correction factor has already been submitted to the APMP as key comparison data and the results are in good agreement with those obtained in previous studies. This study shows that the experimental method and the EGSnrc simulation method are usually used in the measurement of the correction factor. In particular, the application of the simulation methods is more common.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of various exercise intensity on Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR), excess post exercise energy expenditure (EPEE), and thyroid hormonal changes in trained (TR) and untrained (UT) people. The subject of the present study were divided into two groups and four periods: trained (TR; n=6) and untrained (UT; n=6) group. And the periods were divided as follows; Resting (R), Maximal (M), High intensity (H), and Low intensity (L). The percent body fat and RMR of all subjects were measured at every periods. The RMR was measured early in the morning following a 12-hour fast using MMX3B gas analyzer and blood sample were collected from the anticubital vein to investigate thyroid hormonal (T3, T4, Free T3, Free T4, & TSH) changes. All the RMR values were expressed as absolute value/BSA $(kcal/d/m^2)$. And We also analyzed mean energy expenditure for 30 minutes during and after different intensity exercise. There was significant difference in RMR among different intensity of exercise. in TR (p < .05) not in the UT group. however, there was no significant different percent body fat in TR and in UT group. In the energy expenditure, there was significant different between TR and UT in HEE (high intensity exercise energy expenditure), LEE (low intensity exercise energy expenditure), HEEPE (high intensity exercise energy expenditure post exercise) & LEEPE (low intensity exercise expenditure post exercise). In the hormonal level, there was significant different in T4 level in the TR group at H period and in T4, Free T3, & Free T4 levels in TR group at L period, however there was no significant different in the UT group. The present cross-sectional study was design to investigate the relationship between exercise intensity and RMR. The focus of this investigation was to compare RMR in aerobically trained (TR) and untrained (VI). The relationship among RMR, exercise intensity and percent body fat would best be investigated using MMX3B and body composition analyzer. Each subject completed measurement of percent body fat, RMR, hormone in the period of maximal oxygen uptake exercise (M), high intensity exercise (H), and low intensity exercise (L). From the results, Low intensity of exercise (L), there was a trend for an increased RMR (kcal/day) in the TR not for the UT. This is best explained not by the reduced percent body fat but by the highly induced energy expenditure (during exercise and post exercise energy expenditure) and increased T4, Free T3, and Free T4 hormonal levels in the low intensity exercise for the TR group.
We propose an improved solvent contact model to estimate the solvation free energies of amino acids from individual atomic contributions. The modification of the solvation model involves the optimization of three kinds of parameters in the solvation free energy function: atomic fragmental volume, maximum atomic occupancy, and atomic solvation parameters. All of these atomic parameters for 17 atom types are developed by the operation of a standard genetic algorithm in such a way to minimize the difference between experimental and calculated solvation free energies. The present solvation model is able to predict the experimental solvation free energies of amino acids with the squared correlation coefficients of 0.94 and 0.93 for the parameterization with Gaussian and screened Coulomb potential as the envelope functions, respectively. This result indicates that the improved solvent contact model with the newly developed atomic parameters would be a useful tool for the estimation of the molecular solvation free energy of a protein in aqueous solution.
We investigated the solvent effects on the relative free energies of binding of $Na^+$ and $Li^+$ ions to 12-crown-4 and ${\Delta}log\;K_s$ (the difference of stability constant of binding) by a Monte Carlo simulation of statistical perturbation theory (SPT) in several solvents. Comparing the relative free energies of binding of $Na^+$ and $Li^+$ ions to 12-crown-4, in $CH_3OH$ of this study with experimental works, there is a good agreement among the studies. We have reported the quantitative free energy polarity (of solvent) relationships (QFPR) of the relationship between the relative free energies and solvent polarity studied on the solvent effects on the relative free energies of binding of $Na^+$ and $Li^+$ ions to 12-crown-4.
