Occurrence, Seasonal Changes and Vertical Distribution of Silica-scaled Chrysophytes in a Small Fish-free Pond in Japan

  • Occurence, seasonal changes and vertical distribution of the silica-scaled chrysophytes in a small fish-free pond were studied using electron microscopy (EM) and light microscopy (LM) from October 1998 to July 1999. The phytoplankton community was characterized by Chrysophyta and Cryptophyta. Ten species of the silica-scaled chrysophytes of genera Mallomonas, Synura, Chrysosphaerella and Spiniferomonas were identified by EM, and the most abundant species were Mallomonas akrokomos and M. portae-ferreae. The maximum population density of M. akrokomos was observed in December and several peaks appeared periodically at about one to two month intervals, whereas M. portae-ferreae developed the maximum density in March. The diurnal vertical distribution of M. akrokomos exhibited clear downward migration at night and slightly upward migration in the morning. A complex interaction among physico-chemical and biological factors seemed to affect the vertical distribution of M. akrokomos. However, the seasonal changes of M. akrokomos did not show significant corre1ations with the physico-chemical and some biologica1 factors. Although M. akrokomos was evenly distributed throughout the water column during some experimental periods, the diurnal patterns found in the two diurnal cycles showed consistency in that it clearly avoided the surface water during the day. This suggested that M. akrokomos may be a shade plankton with maximum densities below surface layer.

욕조의 보온성능연구 (A Performance Equation of Bath Tubs)

  • In this paper, a new performance equation of bath tubs has been derived, which is very characteristically illuminating and in good agreement with experiments : $$T=T_{\infty}+(T_0-T_{\infty})e-\frac{k(A'_f+A_0)}{Mc_{P{\Delta}x}t$$, where $T_{\infty}$ is the temperature of the bathroom, $T_0$ that of the bathwater at t=0, k the overall heat conductivity of the tub- wall, $A'_f$ the equivalent surface area to the wall, $A_0$ the submerged area of the tub-wall, M mass of the bath-water, $C_p$ the specific heat of the bathwater and ${\Delta}x$ the thickness of the tub-wall. Here the equivalent-free surface area is written as $$A'_f=mA_f,\;m=const.(1-{\phi})^{0.88}$$ : where m is a numerical factor which is determined by a simple experiment and some calculation, {\phi}$ the relative humidity and $A_f$ the real free-surface area. From this study, it has been clarified that cooling of bath-water is mainly due to mass-transfer through evaporation from the free surface and conductive heat loss through the tub-wall is minor, which rather gaily mock at common sense. The effect of keeping bathwater warn by increase of the tub-wall thickness is also analyzed by a new idea of the thickness gain factor.

$^{13}C$ Solid State NMR Study on the Dynamics of the Poly(vinyl butylal) with Various Water Contents

  • Physical properties of PVB [Poly(vinyl butyral)] polymer are strongly correlated with water contents in the polymer. Thus dynamics of PVB containing 10~50(w/w) % of water were studied by $^{13}$ C CP/MAS/DD over the temperature range 293K -348K. From the Peak area, line width, chemical shift, and relaxation times ( $T_{1}$ $T_{1p}$) measured at 9.4 T, it was deduced that water facilitates molecular dynamics of the PVB molecules overall including conformational exchange of the racemic and meso butyaldehyde rings in the PVB. However, the influence of water was not linear to the amount of water in the PVB samples. It is suggested that water up to 30 w/w % of the sample is closely bound to the PVB polymer and water relatively free from the PVB polymer starts to appear when water is added more than 30 w/w %.%.

  • We are calling the erupting ground water as drugwater or mineral water in Korea and thinking those water is good for health from ancient. But most of them were used by mountainer as drinking water and food making water. Authors tried to investigate the evidence of contamination by user on the 10 erupting ground water and gained following results: 1. All of the mineral, waters on 10 area in Seoul were unfitable to drinking water standard. 2. In the view of the bacteriology 80% were contaminated by coliform group. 3. The highest value of the free carbon dioxide contents were 652.96 ppm at Sam Sun Mineral Water.

Antioxidant Enzyme Activity in Rat Liver and Kidney Related to Coix Intake

  • The effects of dietary Coix(lacryma-jobi) water extract on the antioxidant enzyme activity in the liver and kidney of Sprague-Dawley rats were studied. Forty-five rats were fed for 3 weeks with either control diet or experimental diets that contain either Coix water extract or Coix water residue. Twenty percent of the carbohydrate was replaced with Coix water residue by dry weight in the water residue diet, while distilled water was replaced by Coix water extract to make a pellet-form diet in the Coix water extract diet. The levels of glutathione, glutathione-peroxidase, and glutathione-S-transferase activities in liver and kidney were measured . It has been found that glutathione, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione-S-transferase enzyme activities from activities from liver and kidneyof the rats were enhanced in the group fed with Coix water extract.

  • In this study, the current regulation of the water source energy, one of the renewable energy, was analyzed, and the improvement plan for the high efficient data center cooling system was suggested. In the improvement plan, the design and construction guidelines of the water source energy system permit to adopt the cooling and heating system with or without heat pump. In addition, it should also include the system operated in the cooling mode only all year-round. The domestic test standards to consider the water source operating conditions should be developed. Especially, it is highly recommended that the test standards to include the system with forced cooling and free cooling modes related with the enhanced data center cooling system adopting the water source energy.

  • Data on the solubility of p-hydroxy-benzoate in amide-water cosolvent system and surface tension of the binary amide-water cosolvents are analyzed in terms of the possible mechanism for cosolvency. The results of the study suggest that strong partitioning of the alkylated amides to the ester surface, thus reducing the hydrophobic interface within the system, nay account for much of the cosolvency phenomena observed in these systems.

  • Significant structure theory has been applied to the viscosities of supercooled liquids with success. In the supercooled region, the effect of free volume decrease is so significant that the thermal effects on the solid-like volume must be considered properly. In addition, the two state theories proposed by Jhon and Eyring for water and Litovitz et al. for boron trioxide have been successfully applied to the structure change in the liquid state. Considered liquids are benzene, carbon tetrachloride, p-xylene, water and boron trioxide.

조위변동(潮位變動)을 받는 호안제(護岸堤)의 사면안정해석(斜面安定解析) (Stability Analysis for a Dyke Subjected to Tidal Fluctuations)

  • 하루에 두번씩 10m의 진폭을 가지고 조위(潮位)가 계속해서 변화(變化)한다고 가정하여 한 대표적인 호안제(護岸提) 단면에 대해 사면안정해석(斜面安定解析)을 행한다. 조위(潮位)가 변화(變化)하는 동안 호안제내(護岸提內) 간극수압(間隙水壓)의 변화(變化)는 전산 프로그램 "FLUMP"에 의해 수행되며 이 프로그램은 포화(飽和)흐름은 물론 비포화(非飽和)흐름과 비정상(非正常) 흐름까지 고려될 수 있도록 짜여져 있다. 이 프로그램으로 얻어진 결과는 조위변동시(潮位變動時)의 자유수면(自由水面) 변화(變化)와 정(正) 및 부간극수압(負間隙水壓)의 크기와 분포를 명확하게 결정할 수 있음을 보여주고 있다. 조위(潮位)가 최저(最低)까지 내려갔을 때 제체내(堤體內) 어느 부분에서는 압력수두(壓力水頭)가 자유수면(自由水面)의 높이보다 더 높게 나타난다. 즉 이것은 조위변동(潮位變動)을 받는 호안제(護岸堤)의 일부에 과잉간극수압(過剩間隙水壓)이 발생함을 의미한다. 또한 부간극수압(負間隙水壓)이 나타나는 불포화영역(不飽和領域)이 조위강하시(潮位降下時)에 일시적(一時的)으로 발생한다. 이 불포화영역(不飽和領域)의 흙의 전단강도(剪斷强度)는 간극수압(間隙水壓)이 정(正)의 상태로부터 부(負)로 바뀔때 증가(增加)되며 이 값은 Fredlund 등이 제안한 방법에 따라 결정될 수 있다. 호안제(護岸堤) 사면(斜面)의 안정해석(安定解析)에 있어서는 조위변동시(潮位變動時) 발생되는 과잉간극수압(過剩間隙水壓)과 불포화영역(不飽和領域)의 부간극수압(負間隙水壓)이 반드시 고려되어야 한다는 것을 이 논문에서 강조하고 있다. 이것들이 고려되었을 때 임계활동원은 조위(潮位)가 최저(最低)로 되었을 때 얻어지는 자유수면(自由水面)보다 아래에 존재하는 것 같다.

결명자 추출물의 추출특성 및 항산화 효과 (Extraction Characteristics and Antioxidative Activity of Cassia tora L. Extracts)

  • 결명자 추출액의 추출 특성과 추출액의 항산화성을 검토하여 결명자의 추출 조건을 결정함으로써 결명자 유효성분의 식품 소재화를 위한 기초자료를 얻고자 하였다. 용매와의 비율을 결정하기 위해 8배, 10배, 12배, 14배의 water를 가하여 추출 수율을 비교한 결과 water와의 비율이 10배일 때 추출 수율이 가장 좋은 것으로 나타났다. 탁도는 water 추출액에서 가장 높았으며, 추출용매의 ethanol 공노가 증가할수록 낮아졌다. 적정산도는 추출용매의, 50% ethanol에서 가장 높았으나, 전체적으로 산도가 매우 낮았다. 유리당 함량은 fructose $0.08{\sim}0.11mg%$, glucose $0.09{\sim}0.32%$, sucrose $0.08{\sim}1.26mg%$로 나타났다. 총 폴리페놀 함량을 나타낸 것으로 50% ethanol 추출액에서 2.03%로 가장 높은 함량을 나타내었으며. 75% ethanol 추출액은 0.02%로 다른 용매에 비해 현저하게 낮은 함량을 나타내었다. 전자공여능은 50% ethanol에서 66.,39%로 나타나 다른 용매에 비해 높은 전자공여 효과를 보여 주었으며, 폴리페놀 함량과 비슷한 경향을 나타내었다. SOD 유사활성 측정 결과는, 50% ethanol 추출액에서 50.56%로 가장 높은 활성을 나타냈었으며, 총 폴리페놀 함량과 전자공여능 측정 결과와 비슷한 경향으로, 50% ethanol 추출액이 다른 두 용매 보다 우수한 것으로 나타났다.
