  • In this paper, effects of free surface on viscous flow is investigated. Continuity equation coupled with Navier-Stokes equations are solved numerically by using an artificial compressibility method[1, 2]. The body-fitted generalized curvilinear coordinate system is employed to deal with arbitrary body shape. The IAF scheme with finite difference method is used to solve the equations, and a diagonal algorithm is applied to time-varying Jacobian matrices for the computational economics. Free surface shape is obtained by applying zero pressure condition to still water surface at each time step. A numerical test is made for larminar flow around a circular cylinder vertically piercing the free surface. Computed flow patterns are largely affected by the existance of free surface in low Reynolds number flows treated in this paper. Free surface causes viscous pressure drag to vary much in depth direction in accordance with the variations of flow pattern.

  • Sapphire is a substrate material that is widely used in optical and electronic devices. However, the processing of sapphire into a substrate takes a long time owing to its high hardness and chemical inertness. In order to process the sapphire ingot into a substrate, ingot growth, multiwire sawing, lapping, and polishing are required. The lap grinding process using pellets is known as one of the ways to improve the efficiency of sapphire substrate processing. The lap grinding process ensures high processing efficiency while utilizing two-body abrasion, unlike the lapping process which utilizes three-body abrasion by particles. However, the lap grinding process has a high material removal rate (MRR), while its weakness is in obtaining the required surface roughness for the final polishing process. In this study, we examine the effects of free abrasives in lap grinding on the material removal characteristics of sapphire substrate. Before conducting the lap grinding experiments, it was confirmed that the addition of free abrasives changed the friction force through the pin-on-disk wear test. The MRR and roughness reduction rate are experimentally studied to verify the effects of free abrasive concentration on deionized water. The addition of free abrasives (colloidal silica) in the lap grinding process can improve surface roughness by three-body abrasion along with two-body abrasion by diamond grits.

  • A submarine is optimized to operate below the water surface because it spends most of its time in a submerged condition. However, the performance in free surface conditions is also important because it is unavoidable for port departure and arrival. Generally, potential flow theory is used for seakeeping analysis of a surface ship and is known for excellent numerical accuracy. In the case of a submarine, the accuracy of potential theory is high underwater but is low in free surface conditions because of the nonlinearity near the free surface area. In this study, the seakeeping performance of a Canadian Victoria Class submarine in regular waves was investigated to improve the numerical accuracy in free surface conditions by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The results were compared to those of model tests. In addition, the potential theory software Hydrostar developed by Bureau Veritas was also used for seakeeping performance to compare with CFD results. From the calculation results, it was found that the seakeeping analysis by using CFD gives good results compared with those of potential theory. In conclusion, seakeeping analysis based on CFD can be a good solution for estimating the seakeeping performance of submarines in free surface conditions.

  • A Computational Fluid Dynamics model is presented in this study for the simulation of the complex fluid flows with free surfaces inside the Tuned Liquid Column Dampers in horizontal motion. The characteristics of the fluid model of the TLCD in horizontal motion include the free surface of the multiphase flow and the horizontal moving frame. In this study, the time depend unsteady Standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model based on Navier-Stokes equations is chosen. The volume of fluid (VOF) method and sliding mesh technique are adopted to track the free surface of water inside the vertical columns of TLCD and treat the moving boundary of the walls of TLCD in horizontal motion. Several model solution parameters comprising different time steps, mesh sizes, convergence criteria and discretization schemes are examined to establish model parametric independency results. The simulation results are compared with the experimental data in the dimensionless amplitude of the water column in four different configured groups of TLCDs with four different orifice areas. The predicted natural frequencies and the head loss coefficient of TLCDs from CFD model are also compared with the experimental data. The predicted numerical results agree well with the available experimental data.

  • The stable conformers of glycine and the inter-conversions between them were studied theoretically at various levels of theory, B3LYP, MP2, CCSD and CCSD(T), in the gas phase and in aqueous solution. In aqueous solution, the structures examined by use of the conductor-like polarizable continuum model (CPCM) with various cavity models, UA0, UAHF, UAKS, UFF, BONDI and PAULING, and by use of a discrete/continuum solvation model with eight water clusters. The Gibbs free energy differences between the neutral (NE) and zwitterionic conformers (ZW), ${\Delta}G_{Z-N}[=G_{ZW}-G_{NE}]$, in aqueous solution were well reproduced by using the BONDI and PAULING cavity models. However the ${\Delta}G_{Z-N}$ values were underestimated in other cavity models, although the ZW conformers existed as stable species in aqueous solution. In the studies of a discrete/continuum solvation model with eight water clusters, gas phase results are still insufficient to reproduce the experimental findings. However the ${\Delta}G_{Z-N}$ values calculated by use of CPCM method in aqueous solution agreed well with the experimental ones.

  • Solvent-free low foaming scouring agents (LFSC) were prepared by blending of 2-ethylhexylaminoethyl sulfate (2-EHAS), POE(10) octadecylbenzyl- ammonium chloride (POBAC) and Sedlan FF-200 (FF-200). As the results of several tests, 2-EHAS/POBAC/FF-200/water (8g/12g/20g/60g) mixture (LFSC-5) showed good cleaning power, penetrating ability and stability to alkali, and gave less problem in water pollution. The foaming power of LFSC-5 measured by Ross and Miles method was 8mm foam height immediately after foaming, and that measured by Ross and Clark method was less than 300mm foam height at $30^{\circ}C$, and 18mm at $80^{\circ}C$. As a result, LFSC-5 proved a good low foaming scouring agent for fiber.

  • Scour characteristics of noncohesive bed materials at the downstream of free-falling jet were analyzed through hydraulic experiments. It was assumed that the downstream had no special energy dissipators. Flow characteristics of free falling jet from rectangular section were studied, and scour characteristics with and without mounds, which were generated at the downstream of the scour hole, were comparatively analyzed for various bed materials, discharges and tailwater depths. Not only the equilibrium scour depth but also the height of mound could be expressed as a function of densimetric Froude number. Densimetric Froude number had closer relationship with the equilibrium dimensionless scour depth than other dimensionless parameters. It was suggested that the mound effects should be considered at the design stage of bed protection works.

  • Degradations of phenol and chlorinated compounds mixtures were studied with ultrasound of 20 kHz and 0.57, 1.14 W/mL. In presence of carbon tetrachloride (CT), degradation rate of phenol is faster than chloroform (CF), dichloromethane (DCM) and phenol solution. It is due to that CT generates of free chlorine (HOCl and $OCl^-$) from the sonochemical degradation and plays a role of hydrogen atom scavenger. CF and DCM are react with free chlorine, so amount of free chlorine is smaller than CT solution. The degradation rates of chlorinated compounds decreased with co-presence of phenol in the solution due to the distribution ultrasonic energy to both compounds. The measured chloride ion was lower than the theoretical concentration assuming complete degradation. This means not all the contaminants destructed went through complete degradation.

  • This study was conducted to investigate chemical properties, quality stability and utilization of approved sardine surimi(ASS) which is developed our laboratory. The product yield of the ASS was about 3 times higher than that of usual sardine surimi(SS). The proper addition concentration of sodium bicarbonate was 0.1% for the neutralization of the ASS. The content of salt soluble protein nitrogen in the ASS was about the half of that in the SS, while the content of water soluble protein nitrogen was 2.4 times higher in ASS. The total amount of free amino acids in the ASS was about 11 times higher than that of the SS. Predominant free amino acids in the ASS were histidine, taurine, glutamic acid and alanine, and those four amino acids occupied 94% of total amount of free amino acids. During cold storage at 21oC for 6 months, the quality of ASS was more stable than that of SS in judging from changes of water soluble and salt soluble protein nitrogen, AV and POV. Quality of fish burger, fish sausage and fried fish paste processed in accordance with commercial processing preparation using the ASS or SS exclusively and mixtures which other white meat fish surimi(alaska pollack, hair tail and sole) were proportionallly added to each of two types of sardine meat were evaluated. In case of fish burger, the product processed from the ASS only were superior.

  • Antioxidative effect of tea extracts from green tea(steamed, roasted), oolong tea and black tea was investigated. Antioxidative activities of the crude catechin fraction were the most effective in oolong tea which contained the highest level of (-)-epigallocatechin gallate(EGCg). The water-soluble fraction obtained from oolong tea exhibited binding with more ferrous than copper ions. It showed a synergistic effect when used with an antioxidant such as BHT(0.5mg) and $\alpha$-tocopherol(2mg). Especially, this synergistic effect was exhibited more with BHT than with $\alpha$-tocopherol. Also steamed green tea, roasted green tea and oolong tea showed remarkable free radical scavenging action. The SC50(the concentration of a water-soluble fraction which is required to scavenge 50% of 100$\mu$M 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl radicals) of steamed and roasted green tea, oolong tea and black tea extracts were 11.3$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml, 11.4$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml, 12.7 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml and 14.9$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml, respectively. It is assumed that the antioxidative activity of tea extracts is due to inhibition of peroxidation free radical scavenging and binding action of ferrous ions by mainly tea polyphenol compounds.
