  • This paper presents a numerical evaluation of the flow rate of air conditioner outdoor unit as function of shroud design parameters. To determine the optimal design parameters, we investigated the flow rate by changing bell mouth height, fan height, fan guide height, fan width. The evaluation of the relative priority of the design parameters was performed to choose three important parameters in order to use a response surface method. The flow rate of the optimum model, compared to that of the base model, was increased by about 6.25%.

  • Basic constraint equations derived from orthogonality conditions between a pair of body-fixed vectors and a body-fixed vector or a vector between two bodies are reformulated by using relative coordinate kinematics between two adjacent reference frames. Arithmetic numbers of operations required to compute derivatives of the constraint equations are drastically reduced. A mixed formulation of relative and cartesian coordinates is developed to further simplify derivatives of the constraints. Advantages and disadvantages of the new formulation are discussed. Possible singularity problem of para llelism constraints is resolved by introducing an extra generalized coordinate. Kinematic analysis of a McPherson strut suspension system are carried out to illustrate use and efficiency of the new formulation.

  • This paper presents a numerical evaluation of the flow rate of air conditioner outdoor unit by investigating the effects of fan location and shroud shape. To determine optimal design parameters, we investigated the exhaust flow rate by changing shroud height, fan height, fan guide height, and fan width. The 3rd order central composite design was performed to select three most important parameters affecting the exhaust flow rate. According to the result of response surface method, the exhaust flow rate of the optimum model increased by 6.25% compared to that of the base model.

  • The present paper summarizes the experimental research carried out at the "Politehnica" University of Timisoara, Romania, with the scope of investigating the influence of different column web stiffening solutions on the performance of beam-to-column joints of Moment Resisting Steel Frames. The response parameters, such as resistance, rigidity and ductility were examined. Five different types of panel web stiffening were compared with regard to a reference test. A quasi-linear relationship between the moment capacity and the total shear area of the web panel was observed from the experimental tests while the initial rigidity increased non-proportionally with the same area. Comparisons are presented of the experimental tests with the mathematical model developed by Krawinkler and with the model stipulated in Eurocode 3 Part 1.8. These comparisons showed a generally good agreement in the case of moment capacity, while the computed rigidities were always greater than the experimental rigidities.

  • The seismic design of a two-storey precast reinforced-concrete building structure equipped with viscous dampers is presented in this paper with twofold purpose. The first goal is to verify the applicability of a practical procedure for the identification of the mechanical characteristics of the viscous dampers which allow to achieve target performance levels, originally proposed by the authors for moment-resisting building frames, also with reference to "pendular" structures. The second goal is to investigate the effectiveness of the use of viscous dampers (as compared with traditional lateral-resisting stiff braces) for the seismic design of precast not moment-resisting concrete structures.

  • This paper is to demonstrate the effectiveness of one point grounding in support of ESS protection. One point grounding provides for the dispatching of excess energy for protection of switching equipment and personnel from lightning discharge hazards and for a natural sink for noise from atmospheric lightning and power transients. In most ESS installations there are a number of different items that must be maintained at a common ground potential for safety, fault protection or noise reduction. The items typically consist of power systems, heating and ventilating systems, distributing frames, repeating equipmets, switching equipments, etc. Grounding system of an ESS Office is most effective when all the ground points are connected to a single, common earth. The one point grounding prvides a common reference potential, keeping all the items of telecommunications facility free from the earth current and voltage hazards.

  • Application of reduced web beam section (RWBS) as a sacrificial fuse element has become a popular research field in recent years. Weakening of beam web in these connections may cause local web buckling around the opening area which can affect cyclic behavior of connection including: maximum load carrying capacity, strength degradation rate, dissipated energy, rotation capacity, etc. In this research, effect of local web buckling on the cyclic behavior of RWBS connections is investigated using finite element modeling (FEM). For this purpose, a T-shaped moment connection which has been tested under cyclic loading by another author is used as the reference model. Fracture initiation in models is simulated using Cyclic Void Growth Model (CVGM) which is based on micro-void growth and coalescence. Included in the results are: effect of opening corner radii, opening dimensions, beam web thickness and opening reinforcement. Based on the results, local web buckling around the opening area plays a significant role on the cyclic behavior of connection and hence any parameter affecting the local web buckling will affect entire connection behavior.

  • Since parameter mismatch seriously impacts the efficiency and stability of induction motor drives, it is important to accurately estimate the rotor and stator resistance. This paper introduces a method to directly calculate the rotor flux that is independent of stator and rotor resistance and electrical angle. It is based on obtaining the rotor and stator resistance using the model reference adaptive system (MRAS) method. The method has a lower computation burden and less adaptation time when compared with other rotor resistance estimation methods. This paper builds three coordinate frames to analyze the rotor flux error and rotor resistance error. A number of implementation issues are also considered.

  • In this study, the characteristics of flow in outdoor unit were numerically analyzed. Parametric studies were performed to compare the effect of bell mouth height, fan height and fan width concerned with flow rate. The result indicated that the flow rate was dependent on the bell mouth height, while it was negligibly affected by the fan height and fan width. The fan width was found to affect the velocity distribution at heat exchanger face.

  • This paper explained algorithm for a initial pole position estimation of a permanent magnet linear synchronous motor(PMLSM). Generally this motor is considered initial pole position with a position sensor such as incremental encoder for the precise initial pole position estimation and high performance. But this is based on the principle that the initial pole position is accomplished by the PI controller using the maximum values of a position error generated by the new proposed two reference frames and also by using a rated force for input. the proposed algorithm does not utilize the general methods such as impedance ratio, EMF and using the magnetic saturation. In other words, this can be applied without respect to variety of the motor structure because of insensitivity to the motor parameters. In conclusion, simulation results are presented to confirm performance of initial pole position estimation method.
