  • Column foot in traditional Chinese timber structures may be subjected to be uplifted due to the lateral load and subsequently reset under the vertical loads. The residual moment of the rocking column foot is the most important parameter representing the mechanical behaviors of column foot, and the simplification of joints is the basis of structural analysis of whole structure. The complicated mechanical behaviors of joint and the modeling of the column foot joint has been undertaken historically based on the experiments and numerical simulation. On the condition of limited application range of those models, a lack of simplified model to represent the mechanical behaviors of joint deserves attentions. There is a great need to undertake theoretical studies to derive the residual moment and make better simplified model of the joint. This paper proposes the residual moment and equivalent simplified model of the rotational stiffness for column foot joint. And, the timber frame is established based on the simplified model, which is verified by solid finite element model. Results show that a mutual agreement on the mechanical behaviors of the timber frame is obtained between the simplified model and the solid finite element model. This study can serve as the references of the structural analysis for the traditional timber structures.

  • Due to the influence of nonlinearity and time-variation, it is difficult to establish an accurate model of concrete frame structures that adopt active controllers. Fuzzy theory is a relatively appropriate method but susceptible to human subjective experience to decrease the performance. To guarantee the stability of multi-time delays complex system with multi-interconnections, a delay-dependent criterion of evolved design is proposed in this paper. Based on this criterion, the sector nonlinearity which converts the nonlinear model to multiple rule base of the linear model and a new sufficient condition to guarantee the asymptotic stability via Lyapunov function is implemented in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMI). A numerical simulation for a three-layer reinforced concrete frame structure subjected to earthquakes is demonstrated that the proposed criterion is feasible for practical applications.

  • We propose a new linearized model which can be used very efficiently for the design and analysis of the autopilot of aerodynamically controlled skid-to-turn missiles. Proposed model is based on the linearized equations of the missile dynamics derived in the aerodynamic frame where xz plane contains the missile longitudinal axis and velocity vector. However, to take the effect due to the small perturbation of the missile body into consideration, we introduce a new frame which is identical to the aerodynamic frame in the trim state but after small perturbation it moves fixed with the missile body, and finally, the proposed model is set up in this frame. It is shown by nonlinear simulations and stability analysis of a numerical example that the new model describes the missile motion better than the conventional one linearized in the body frame with a certain amount of simplification.

  • Various types of attendance management systems are being introduced in a remote working environment and research on using face recognition is in progress. To ensure accurate worker's attendance, a face recognition-based attendance management system must analyze every frame of video, but face recognition is a heavy task, the number of the task should be minimized without affecting accuracy. In this paper, we proposed a search model using time interval variation to minimize the number of face recognition task of recorded videos for attendance management system. The proposed model performs face recognition by changing the interval of the frame identification time when there is no change in the attendance status for a certain period. When a change in the face recognition status occurs, it moves in the reverse direction and performs frame checks to more accurate attendance time checking. The implementation of proposed model performed at least 4.5 times faster than all frame identification and showed at least 97% accuracy.

  • When a roof frame is subjected to the airblast loading, the conventional way to analyze the damage of the frame or design the frame is to use single degree of freedom (SDOF) model. Although a roof frame consists of beams and girders, a typical SDOF analysis can be conducted only separately for each component. Thus, the rigid body motion of beams by deflections of supporting girders can not be easily considered. Neglecting the beam-girder interaction in the SDOF analysis may cause serious inaccuracies in the response values in both Pressure-Impulse curve (P-I) and Charge Weight-Standoff Diagrams (CWSD). In this paper, an inelastic two degrees of freedom (TDOF) model is developed, based on force equilibrium equations, to consider beam-girder interaction, and to assess if the modified SDOF analysis can be a reasonable design approach.

  • In order to perform a step-by-step force-displacement response analysis or dynamic time-history analysis of large buildings with masonry infilled R/C frames, a continuous force-deformation model based on an equivalent strut approach is proposed for masonry infill panels containing openings. The model, which is applicable for degrading elements, can be implemented to replicate a wide range of monotonic force-displacement behaviour, resulting from different design and geometry, by varying the control parameters of the model. The control parameters of the proposed continuous model are determined using experimental data. The experimental program includes fifteen 1/3-scale, single-story, single-bay reinforced concrete frame specimens subjected to lateral cyclic loading. The parameters investigated include the shape, the size, the location of the opening and the infill compressive strength. The actual properties of the infill and henceforth the characteristics needed for the diagonal strut model are based on the assessment of its lateral resistance by the subtraction of the response of the bare frame from the response of the infilled frame.

  • DVC (Distributed Video Coding) and FRUC (Frame Rate Up Conversion) techniques need to have an efficient motion compensated frame interpolation algorithms. Conventional works of these applications have mainly focused on the performance improvement of overall system. But, in some applications, it is necessary to evaluate how well the MCI (Motion Compensated Interpolation) frame matches the original frame. For this aim, this paper deals with the modeling methods for evaluating the block-based matching cost. First, several matching criteria, which have already been dealt with the motion compensated frame interpolation, are introduced and then combined to make estimate models for the size of MSE (Mean Square Error) noise of the MCI frame to original one. Through computer simulations, it is shown that the block-based matching criteria are evaluated and the proposed model can be effectively used for estimating the MSE noise.

  • This paper aims to provide guidelines for the numerical modeling of reinforced concrete (RC) frame elements in order to assess the seismic performance of structures. Several types of numerical models RC frame elements are available in nonlinear structural analysis packages. Since these numerical models are formulated based on different assumption and theories, the models accuracy, computing time, and applicability vary, which poses a great difficulty to practicing engineering and limits their confidence in the analysis resultants. In this study, the applicability of four representative numerical models of RC frame elements is evaluated through comparison with experimental results of four-storey bare frame available from European Laboratory for Structural Assessment. The accuracy of a numerical model is evaluated according to the top displacement, interstorey drift, Maximum storey shear, damage pattern and energy dissipation capacity of the frame structure. The results obtained allow a better understanding of the characteristics and potentialities of all procedures, helping the user to choose the best approach to perform nonlinear analysis.

  • A comprehensive study on seismic performance of wood frame building in hilly regions is presented. Specifically, seismic fragility assessment of a typical wood frame building at various locations of the northeast region of India are demonstrated. A three-dimensional simplified model of the wood frame building is developed with due consideration to nonlinear behaviour of shear walls under lateral loads. In doing so, a trilinear model having improved capability to capture the force-deformation behaviour of shear walls including the strength degradation at higher deformations is proposed. The improved capability of the proposed model to capture the force-deformation behaviour of shear wall is validated by comparing with the existing experimental results. The structural demand values are obtained from nonlinear time history analysis (NLTHA) of the three-dimensional wood frame model considering the effect of uncertainty due to record to record variation of ground motions and structural parameters as well. The ground motion bins necessary for NLTHA are prepared based on the identified hazard level from probabilistic seismic hazard analysis of the considered locations. The maximum likelihood estimates of the lognormal fragility parameters are obtained from the observed failure cases and the seismic fragilities corresponding to different locations are estimated accordingly. The results of the numerical study show that the wood frame constructions commonly found in the region are likely to suffer minor cracking or damage in the shear walls under the earthquake occurrence corresponding to the estimated seismic hazard level; however, poses negligible risk against complete collapse of such structures.
