  • A wavelet transform coding method that fulfills the requirements of HD-VCR(high definition video casstte recorder) for studio applications in proposed. A constant bit rate is achieved by a forward rate control technique whcih determins the quantizer stepsize based on the coding results fo the previous frame. We also propose a two-level coder that consists of both the IDC(independently decodable code) and the DDC(dependently decodable code). To minimize error propagation, the transformed coefficients are restructured into transform blocks which are represented by a tree structure. The result shows thta the proposed coding scheme produces better picture quality with block effects than that of DCT(discrete cosine transform) based coding schemes at the same compression ratio. The proposed method meets most of the requirements of HD-VCR.

  • The first frame of a GOP is encoded in intra mode which generates a larger number of bits. In addition, the first frame is used for the inter mode encoding of the following frames. Thus the intial QP for the first frame affects the first frame as well as the following frames. Traditionally, the initial QP is determined among four constant values only depending on the bpp. Although this initialization scheme is simple, yet it is not accurate enough. An accurate intial QP prediction scheme should not only depends on bpp but also on the complexity of the video sequence and the output bandwidth. In this paper, we propose a traffic model for finding the optimal initial QP which maximizes the PSNR of the GOP. We also propose a method to find model parameters for real-time video encoding. It is shown by experimental results that the proposed traffic model captures initial QP characteristics effectively and the proposed method for model parameters accurately estimates the real values.

  • It is well known that Parallel Concatenated Convolutional Codes(turbo codes) has a good performance for long block sizes. This thesis has analyzed the performance of turbo code which is based on voice or control frames with short frame sizes in the future mobile communication system. Also, at the similar decoding complexity, the performance of turbo code and convolutional codes in the speech/control frames, and the applicability of this system are considered. As a result, turbo code in short frame sizes present the performance of a BER of $10^{-3}$ or more over 3 iterations in the future mobile communication system. However, at a BER of $10^{-3}$ , if the same complexity is considered, the performance of rate 1/2 turbo code with K = 5 is better than that of convolutional code with K = 9 at low $E_b/N_0$, and the performance of turbo code with K = 3 is superior to that of convolutional code with K = 7. Rate 1/3 turbo code with K = 3 and 5 have similar to performance of rate 1/2 turbo code.

  • Quality of service (QoS) provision is an important and indispensable function for multi-service wireless networks. In this paper, we present a new scheduling/admission control framework, including an efficient rate-guaranteed opportunistic scheduling (ROS) scheme and a coordinated admission control (ROSCAC) policy to support statistic QoS guarantee in multi-service wireless networks. Based on our proposed mathematical model, we derive the probability distribution function (PDF) of queue length under ROS and deduce the packet loss rate (PLR) for individual flows. The new admission control policy makes admission decision for a new incoming flow to ensure that the PLR requirements of all flows (including the new flow) are satisfied. The numerical results based on ns-2 simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the new joint packet scheduling/admission control framework.

  • The main purpose of rate control is to achieve the highest video quality when bandwidth or storage capacity is limited. For this purpose, we need a rate control algorithm which is adaptively controlled by the motion information of sequences, scene change, buffer capacity and time-varing bandwitdh channels. A rate-control method in the encoder requires the accurate estimation of target bit for each frame and the low end-to-end delay for transmitting video data by intelligent selection of encoding parameters. In this paper, we suggest three kinds of linear relation in the encoder to satisfy the characteristics of rate control. The first relation is that between the percentage of zero quantized transformed coefficients(p) and coded bits. Second relation is that between the PSNR of encoded frame and its Quantization parameter(QP). Finally, we can find out a linear approximation between QP and p. According to the experimental analysis, the proposed method results in an efficient rate control in terms of the bit estimation, the buffer capacity, and PSNR compared with the existing rate control in the H.264 JM 9.3.

  • One interesting problem regarding wireless local area network (WLAN) ad-hoc networks is the effective mitigation of hidden nodes. The WLAN standard IEEE 802.11 provides request to send/clear to send (RTS/CTS) as mitigation for the hidden node problem; however, this causes the exposed node problem. The first 802.11 standard provided only two transmission rates, 1 and 2 Mbps, and control frames, such as RTS/CTS assumed to be sent at 1 Mbps. The 802.11 standard has been enhanced several times since then and now it supports multi-rate transmission up to 65 Mbps in the currently popular 802.11n (20 MHz channel, single stream with long guard interval). As a result, the difference in transmission rates and coverages between the data frame and control frame can be very large. However adjusting the RTS/CTS transmission rate to optimize network throughput has not been well investigated. In this paper, we propose a method to decrease the number of exposed nodes by increasing the RTS transmission rate to decrease RTS coverage. Our proposed method, Asymmetric Range by Multi-Rate Control (ARMRC), can decrease or even completely eliminate exposed nodes and improve the entire network throughput. Experimental results by simulation show that the network throughput in the proposed method is higher by 20% to 50% under certain conditions, and the proposed method is found to be effective in equalizing dispersion of throughput among nodes.

  • In this paper, we propose an empirical framework for modeling and emulating interference in multi-hop wireless ad-hoc networks. Wireless interference causes wide variation in the frame delivery rate at a link, and thus we cannot represent the state of the link with only two states, connected state and disconnected state, as in wired networks. We first investigate wireless interference in detail, in order to accurately calibrate the interference and identify its underlying attributes, and then we simulate the diverse occurrences and effects of interference, after incorporating the scheme into a simulation tool. Based on these observations, we devise a modeling and simulation framework with several control parameters, and perform an extensive set of simulation studies. The simulation results indicate that the proposed framework enables us to examine various attributes of wireless interferences and their effects on wireless network protocols and systems.

  • In this study, we propose a joint source/channel rate control algorithm for video encoder targeting packet erasure channel. Based on the buffer constraints of video communication systems, encoding rate constraint is presented. After defining source distortion models for coded and skipped video frames and a channel distortion model for packet errors and their propagation, an average distortion model of received video is proposed for a given encoding window. Finally, we define an optimization problem to minimize the average distortion for given channel rates and packet loss rates by controlling spatio-temporal parameters of source video and FEC block sizes. Then, we propose a window-based algorithm to solve the problem in real-time.

  • In order to utilize protein hydrolysate produced from hoki (Johnius Belengeri) frame among many different fish processing wastes, hoki frame peptide (PHFP) and phosphorylated hoki frame peptide (PHFP) were prepared, and their calcium absorption accelerating effects were investigated in comparison to control and casein phosphopeptide (CPP). In in vitro experiment, HFP and PHFP inhibited calcium phosphate formation as high as 1.5-fold and 2.5-fold, respectively, comparing to control, In addition, the inhibition rate of calcium phosphate precipitation as increasing concentrations of HFP and PHFP was risen and was similar to that of CPP at 2.0 mg/ml of PHFP concentration, In in vivo experiment using the rats, the groups fed HFP and PHFP indicated significantly increased calcium content in the femur. In particular, the calcium content in the small intestine of the rat fed PHFP was higher than that of control group by approximately $60\%$.
