동남해안지역의 피압단열 대수층에서 조석 분석법을 이용한 수리상수 추정

  • If ground water levels of a confined fractured rock aquifer fluctuate with sea tides, individual values of hydrogeologic parameters can be determined. Tidal efficiency and time lag are first calculated from the water level data recorded at an observation device situated inland from the sea. The tidal efficiency factor of the aquifer at the seacoast is then determined from the observation in monitoring wells and used to calculate storage coefficient. Tidal efficiency factor and the tidal time lag are utilized to calculate storage coefficient and the results are compared. This method is tested in the southeastern coastal area of Busan, Korea. This is a simple and inexpensive way to test confined aquifer but the analysis should be performed according to the coastal environment.

Well Loss in Fractured Rock Formation with Radial Flow during Pumping Test (양수시험시 방사상흐름을 보이는 균열암반 대수층에서의 우물손실)

  • Pumping tests were carried out from seven wells in fractured rocks. The time-drawdown data were obtained from pumping wells and corrected for the elapsed time of step drawdown test using Cooper-Jacob's method. A statistical method. the least square of error, was used to yield the coefficient of aquifer losses, the coefficient of well losses, and the power which indicates the severity of the turbulence. The values of the power range from 1.65 to 6.48. The well losses result mainly from turbulent flow caused by radial flow nearby pumping wells. The turbulent flow depends on Reynolds number. Since the hydraulic characteristics of fractured rocks control the fluid velocity, the value of the power is an important factor to understand the aquifer system of fractured rocks.

  • In order to delineate the flow system of fractured hard rock aquifer, numerical experiments are conducted and the results are analyzed with Mote Carlo simulation. The results show that the percolation threshold and the effective conductivity of a fracture network can be estimated with power law exponent (a) and fracture intensity. But the dependability of the estimated value relies on the percolation threshold, the system scale, and the characterization level.

Comparative Study on Stationary and Trolling Methods of Flowmeter in Fractured Rock Aquifer (암반대수층에서의 공내 유량측정기의 고정식 및 이동식 측정방법에 관한 비교 연구)

  • Stationary and trolling methods in measuring flow using flowmeter were adopted to investigate the hydraulic connectivity of fractures and to evaluate the applicability of the measurement methods. Stationary method was useful for identifying the inflow and outflow patterns in the measured section, which enabled us to analyze the hydraulic connectivity of fractures between the wells. Trolling method failed to find the inflow and outflow patterns in the well, but was very effective for locating the conductive fractures. Measuring flow in the borehole by both stationary and trolling methods was found to be very efficient for identifying conductive fractures and their hydraulic connectivity in fractured rock aquifer.

Correlation between the Distribution of Discontinuities and Groundwater Flow in Fractured Rock (온도검층과 수압시험을 통한 파쇄암반의 단열분포와 지하수 흐름 상관성 고찰)

  • The qualitative distribution of a fractured aquifer was characterized by electrical resistivity surveying as a part of basic groundwater investigation in Jangseong. The results were then used to choose sites for observation wells. The locations and distributions of permeable discontinuities were studied by analyses of temperature logs, a borehole image-processing system (BIPS), and hydraulic pressure testing using a double packer. The pressure test showed that the size of the discontinuities correlated with the Lugeon value and the results of the temperature log. The results show that temperature measurement is an effective method to identify permeable discontinuities, with the temperature difference correlating with the size of the aperture of the discontinuity.

  • Slug test is a common characterization method that estimates aquifer hydraulic conductivity rapidly and economically. To characterize the hydraulic property near the borehole YS-4 in the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) site, slug tests were performed, and oscillatory hydraulic responses were observed. We analyzed the observations with the modified Hvorslev and Bouwer&Rice methods considering the casing inertia, and then the results were compared with those from the general Hvorslev and Bouwer&Rice methods. The estimated hydraulic conductivities from the modified methods are ranged from $4.85{\times}10^{-6}$ to $5.44{\times}10^{-6}$ m/sec, but those from the general ones are ranged from $3.10{\times}10^{-6}$ to $3.63{\times}10^{-5}$ m/s, which shows that the oscillatory responses should be analyzed with consideration of the flowing water inertia effect.

Estimation of the Groundwater Discharges in Masan Bay Watershed (마산만 유역의 지하수 유출량 추정)

  • The discharges of groundwater flow were estimated using Darcy's method along the coastal zone in the Masan Bay. The estimates using the information, i.e., groundwater level, location of the observation well, hydraulic conductivity, the thickness of the aquifer, and coastline length, were 1.65% of the precipitation of the watershed. The estimated groundwater discharges through fractured rock aquifer and the aquifer with sedimentary material were $0.7\times10^4$$m^2/year$and $1.0\times10^7$$m^3/year$ respectively. Whereas, the discharge estimated by KORDI (2003) using isotopes method is about 20 times larger than the estimates from this study because of the influence of the re-circulated seawater through the coastal zone aquifer. In order to quantify this effect in detail, the groundwater levels and salinity changes in the observation wells located in the coastal zone should be continuously monitored and analyzed.

Determination of Aqnifer Characteristics from Specific Capacity Data of Wells in Cheju Island (제주도 지하수의 우물 비양수량자료를 이용한 대수층상수 결정방법)

  • Transmissivity is often estimated from specific capacity data because of the expense of conducting standard aquifer test to obtain transmissivity and the relative availability of specific capacity data. Most often, analytic expression relating specific capacity to transmissivity derived by Theis (1963). Brown (1963). and Logan (1964) are used in this analysis. The analytic solution typically used to predict transmissivity from specific capacity in alluvial aquifers assuming influence radius and/or storage coefficient of the aquifers. But those do not agree well with the measured transmissivity in fractured rock aquifers and in heterogeneous aquifers. Razack-Huntely (199l). Huntely-Steffey (1992). and Mace (1997) proposed emphirical rotations between specific capacity and transmissivity in heterogeneous alluvial aquifers. fractured rock aquifers, and karst aquifers. This study focuses on comparison between transmissivity and specific capacity data in volcanic rock aquifers of Jeju Island. Emphirical relation between the log of transmissivity and the log of specific capacity suggests they no linearly related (correlation coefficient 0.951) and the width of $\pm$0.25 log cycles in transmissivity includes 96.6% of data.

  • The groundwater survey was carried out by electrical resistivity and resistivity tomography using several kinds of electrode array to delineate the depth of the saturated zone and basement complex, the aquifer system of fractured rock, and the 2-D resistivity structure was obtained by inversion technique. And the hole-to-surface and crosshole tomography were applied for two boreholes and the inverted resistivity tomogram are obtained. The comparison of those data with core logging data was performed and those results were relatively well correlated. And it was possible to find out the configuration of basement and the fracture zone and the aquifer system from the 2-D resistivity structure and resistivity tomogram.

In situ investigations into mining-induced overburden failures in close multiple-seam longwall mining: A case study

  • Preventing water seepage and inrush into mines where close multiple-seam longwall mining is practiced is a challenging issue in the coal-rich Ordos region, China. To better protect surface (or ground) water and safely extract coal from seams beneath an aquifer, it is necessary to determine the height of the mining-induced fractured zone in the overburden strata. In situ investigations were carried out in panels 20107 (seam No. $2-2^{upper}$) and 20307 (seam No. $2-2^{middle}$) in the Gaojialiang colliery, Shendong Coalfield, China. Longwall mining-induced strata movement and overburden failure were monitored in boreholes using digital panoramic imaging and a deep hole multi-position extensometer. Our results indicate that after mining of the 20107 working face, the overburden of the failure zone can be divided into seven rock groups. The first group lies above the immediate roof (12.9 m above the top of the coal seam), and falls into the gob after the mining. The strata of the second group to the fifth group form the fractured zone (12.9-102.04 m above the coal seam) and the continuous deformation zone extends from the fifth group to the ground surface. After mining Panel 20307, a gap forms between the fifth rock group and the continuous deformation zone, widening rapidly. Then, the lower portion of the continuous deformation zone cracks and collapses into the fractured zone, extending the height of the failure zone to 87.1 m. Based on field data, a statistical formula for predicting the maximum height of overburden failure induced by close multiple seam mining is presented.
