In the present paper, a coaxial rotating smeared crack model is proposed for mass concrete in three-dimensional space. The model is capable of applying both the constant and variable shear transfer coefficients in the cracking process. The model considers an advanced yield function for concrete failure under both static and dynamic loadings and calculates cracking or crushing of concrete taking into account the fracture energy effects. The model was utilized on Koyna Dam using finite element technique. Dam-water and dam-foundation interactions were considered in dynamic analysis. The behavior of dam was studied for different shear transfer coefficients considering/neglecting fracture energy effects. The results were extracted at crest displacement and crack profile within the dam body. The results show the importance of both shear transfer coefficient and the fracture energy in seismic analysis of concrete dams under high hydrostatic pressure.
The effects of temperature and initial crack length on impact fracture behavior of side plate material of 35 ton class FRP ship, which are composed by glass fiber and unsaturated polyester resin, were investigated. Impact fracture toughness of GF/PE composites displayed maximum value when the temperature of specimen is room temperature and $50^{\circ}C$, and with decrease in temperature of specimen, impact fracture toughness decreased. Impact fracture energy of GF/EP composites decreased with increase in initial crack length of specimen, and this value decreased rapidly when the temperature of specimen is lowest, $-25^{\circ}C$,. It is believed that sensitivity of notch on impact fracture energy were increased with decrease in temperature of specimen. As the GF/EP composites exposed in low temperature, impact fracture toughness of composites decreased gradually owing to the decrease of interface bonding strength caused by difference of thermal expansion coefficient between the glass fiber/polyester resin. Further, decrease of interface bonding strength of composites with decrease in specimen temperature was ascertained by SEM photograph of impact fracture surface.
A fracture energy concept proposed by Ouyang and Shah's fracture mechanics approach was used to predict cracking of reinforced concrete members subjected to tension. In this approach, fracture properties in plain concrete which incorporate the presence of the fracture process zone are first determined from the generalized size effect method, then fracture energy required for crack propagation with the same dimension and material properties are evaluated using an R-curve. Subsequently taking into account the material properties in Ouyang and Shah's approach, a theoretical analysis to predict the mechanical behavior of reinforced concrete members subjected to tension was performed and compared to observed experimental results. It is seen that the predicted average crack spacing curves agree well with the experimental results, whereas the analytical method seems to predict lower values for this study. The analytical approach predicts well responses of stress-strain curves before and after the first crack is formed. It is concluded from this study that a fracture energy concept based on the R-curve and the generalized size effect method is a rational approach to predict cracking of reinforced concrete members subjected to tension.

In order to study the impact fracture behavior of brittle materials, a steel-ball-impact experiment was Performed. Five kinds of materials were used in this study : soda-lime glass plates, glass/epoxy prepreg-one layer-bonded and unbonded glass plates, glass/epoxy prepreg-three layers-bonded and unbonded glass plates. Fracture patterns, the maximum stress and absorbed fracture energy were observed according to various impact velocities 40-120m/s. With increasing impact velocity, ring crack, cone crack, radial crack and lateral crack took place in the interior of glass plates. The generation of such cracks was largely reduced with glass/epoxy prepreg coating. Consequently, it is thought that the characteristics of the dynamic Impact fracture behavior could be evaluated using the absorbed fracture energy and the maximum stress measured at the back surface of glass plates.

In this pater, a method of strength evaluation applying fracture mechanics in adhesively bonded joints of A1/A1 materials was investigated. Various adhesively bonded joints of double-cantilever beam with a interfacial crack in its adhesive layer were prepared for the fracture toughness test of comprehensive mixed mode conditions from nearly pure mode I to mode II. The experiment of fracture toughness was carried out under various mixed mode conditions with an interfacial crack and critical energy release rate, Gc by the experimental measurements of compliances was determined. From the results, fracture toughness on mixed mode with an interfacial crack is well characterized by strain energy release rate and a method of strength evaluation by the fracture toughness in adhesively bonded joints of A1/A1 materials was discussed.

The critical fracture energy and failure mechanisms of GF/PP composites are investigated in the temperatures range of the ambient temperature to $-50^{\circ}C$ The critical fracture energy increase as fiber volume fraction ratio increased The critical fracture energy shows a maximum at ambient temperature and it tends to decrease as temperature goes up. Major failure mechanisms can be classfied such as fiber matrix debonding, fiber pull-out and/or delamination and matrix deformation.
Considering for plants and structure under extreme conditions is required for the successful design, especially temperature and pressure. The ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) for the materials under extreme condition needs to be considered. In this study, A-grade mild steel for the LNG carrier and offshore plant was examined by performing low-temperature Charpy V-notch (CVN) impact tests to investigate DBTT and the fracture toughness. The absorbed energy decreased gradually with the experimental temperature, which showed an upper-shelf energy region, lower shelf energy region, and transition temperature indicating DBTT. In addition, the fracture surface morphologies of the mild steels indicated ductile fractures at the upper-shelf energy level, with wide and large-sized dimples, whereas a brittle fracture surface, where was observed at the lower-shelf energy level, with both large and small cleavage facets. Based on the experimental results, ductile brittle transition temperature was estimated in about $-60^{\circ}C$.
The fractal geometry is a non-Euclidean geometry which discribes the naturally irregular or fragmented shaps, so that it can be applied to fracture behavior of materials to investigate the fracture process. Fractal curves have a characteristic that represents a self-similarity as an invariant based on the fractal dimension. This fractal geometry was applied to the crack growth of cementitious composites in order to correlate the fracture behavior to microstructures of cemposite composites. The purpose of this study was to find relationships between fractal dimensions and fracture energy. Fracture test was carried out in order to investigate the fracture behavior of plain and fiber reinforced cement composites. The load-CMOD curve and fracture energy of the beams were observed under the three point loading system. The crack profiles were obtained by the image processing system. Box counting method was used to determine the fractal dimension, D$_{f}$. It was known that the linear correlation exists between fractal dimension and fracture energy of the cement composites. The implications of the fractal nature for the crack growth behavior on the fracture energy, G$_{f}$ is appearent.ent.
In the present contribution, fracture resistance of U-notched GPPS members under mixed mode I/III loading conditions is assessed by using the Averaged Strain Energy Density (ASED) criterion. This criterion has been founded based on the ASED parameter averaged over a well-defined control volume embracing the notch edge. The validation of the theoretical criterion predictions is evaluated through comparing with the results of a series of mixed mode I/III fracture tests conducted on rectangular-shaped GPPS specimens weakened by a single edge U-notch. A recently developed apparatus for mixed mode I/III fracture experiments is employed for measuring the fracture loads of the specimens. The test samples are fabricated with different notch tip radii with the aim of evaluating the influence of this major feature of the U-notched components on the mixed mode I/III fracture behavior. It is shown that the onset of brittle fracture in U-notched GPPS specimens under various combinations of tension and out-of-plane shear can well be predicted by means of the ASED criterion.

The fracture characteristics of concrete under various rates of loading are investigated. The static and dynamic fracture energies of concrete are determined and the size-dependency of fracture energy is clarified from the present study. To this end, a series of experiments were conducted. The maximum failure loads, fracture energies and nominal failure stresses were calculated from those test results. It is found that the fracture energies are increased with the increase of loading rate. The fracture energy values were also greatly influenced with the size of the specimen. The size-dependent prediction eguations for the static and dynamic fracture energies of concrete are proposed in the present study. The present paper provides useful data for the dynamic fracture analysis of concrete structures.
