In order to analyze the elastic-plastic fracture behavior of a structure, the fracture resistance curve of the material should be known first. The standard CT specimen was used to obtain the fracture resistance curves of a piping system. However, it is known that the fracture resistance curve by the standard CT specimen is very conservative to evaluate the integrity of a structure. Also the fracture resistance curve is effected by the specimen geometry and the dimensions because of the constraint effect. The objective of this paper is to be certain the conservativeness of the fracture resistance curve by the standard CT specimen and to provide an additional safety margin. For these, the fracture tests using a real pipe specimen and the standard CT specimen test were performed. A 4-point bending jig was manufactured for the pipe test and the direct current potential drop method was used to measure the crack extension and the length for the pipe test. Also finite element analyses were performed with a CT specimen and a pipe in order to prove the additional safety margin. From the result of tests and analyses of the pipe and the standard CT specimen, it was observed that the fracture analysis with the standard CT specimen is conservative and the additional safety margin was proved.

A realistic numerical simulation technology using a Lagrangian Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) model was combined with a fracture algorithm to predict the fluid-ice-structure interaction. The failure of ice was modeled as the tensile fracture of elastic material by applying a novel FSI model based on the Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method. To verify the developed fracture algorithm, a series of numerical simulations for 3-point bending tests with an ice beam were performed and compared with the experiments carried out in an ice room. For application of the developed FSI model, a dropping water droplet hitting a cantilever ice beam was simulated with and without the fracture algorithm. The simulation showed that the effects of fracture which can occur in the process of a FSI simulation can be studied.
By using miniature SENB specimens, the fracture properties of the materials in the region of welded metal, 321 stainless steel heat affected zone, 690 alloy heat affected zone of 321/690 dissimilar metal girth welded joints were tested. Both the J-resistance curves and critical fracture toughness of the three different materials are affected by the crack size because of the effect of crack tip constraint. Groups of constraint corrected J-resistance curves of the three materials are obtained according to J-Q-M approach. The welded metals exhibit the best fracture resistance but the worst fracture resistance is observed in the material of 690 alloy heat affected zone.
Using two kinds of ZrO2 powder stabilized by 8 mol% and 3 mol% of Y2O3 several microstructures were designed; two single composition specimens of 8 mol% Y2O3-ZrO3 and 3 mol% Y2O3-ZrO2 and five mixture specimens with multi-layered structure and particulate mixture structure at a mixing ratio of 1:1 by weight. Electrical conductivities were measured from 250 to 75$0^{\circ}C$ in air using an impedance analyser, and fracture toughness at room temperature using the indentation method. Making the mixture structures was more effective in enhancing fracture toughness than electrical conductivity. At low temperatures 3 mol% Y2O3-ZrO2 showed the highest values in both electrical conductivity and fracture toughness, while at high temperature the specimens of alternately stacked planar and coarse granulated structure were most favorable.

Statement of problem: Damping of the peak force transmitted to implants has been reported by in vitro studies using impact forces on resin-veneered superstructures. Theoretical assumptions suggest that use of acrylic resin for the occlusal surfaces of a prosthesis would protect the connection between implant and bone. Therefore, the relationship between prosthesis materials and the force transmitted through the implant system also needs to be investigated under conditions that resemble the intraoral mechanical environment. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the fracture strength and modes of temporary prosthesis when a flange or occlusally extended structure were connected on the top of the abutment. Material and method: Modified abutments of winged and bulk design were made by casting the desired wax pattern which is made on the UCLA type plastic cylinder. Temporary crowns were made using templates on the modified abutments, and its fracture toughness and strain were compared to the traditional temporary prosthesis. To evaluate the effect of aging, 5.000 times of thermocycling were performed, and their result was compared to the 24hours specimen result. Results: The following conclusions were drawn from this study: 1. In the fracture toughness test, temporary crown's fracture line located next to the screw hole while modified designs with metal support showed fracture line on the metal and its propagation along the metal-resin interface. 2. Wing and bulk structure didn't show significant difference in the fracture toughness (p>0.05), but wing structure showed stress concentration on the screw hole area compared to bulk structure which showed even stress distribution. 3. In the fracture toughness test after thermocycling, wing and bulk structure showed increased or similar results in metal supported area while off-metal area and temporary crown showed decreased results. 4. In the strain measurement after thermocycling, its value increased in the temporary and bulk structure. However, wing structure showed decreased value in the loading point while increased value in the screw hole area. Conclusion: Wing type design showed compatible result to the bulk type that its application with composite resin prosthesis to the implant dentistry is considered promising.

In order to study on the fracture behavior and the fracture thoughness of combined structure, the specimens, structural steel (SM28C) and 6:4 brass are annealed for ductility and investigated for the befavior of fracture and the absorbed energy at the variation of the impact velocity. The results obtained by this study are as follows: (1)The maximum load increases with the impact velocity, but in the condition of constant impact velocity it decreases as the ductility increases. (2)The absorbed energy increases with the impact velocity, but in the condition of constant impact velocity it is constant as the ductility increases. (3)In the case of the combined structure of peralite and ferrite, the microcracks initiates and propagates mainly in the ferrite structure intergranular in accompany with the slip, and the slip concentration phenomena occur in the boundary of pearlite structure However, in case of the combined structure of .alpha. and ..betha. phase, the microcracks initiates and propagares mainly in the .alpha. phase intergranularly, and slip concentration phenomena not ocur in the boundary of .betha. phase.

In this paper, the technique to reinforce the structure using the sensitivity information is proposed. Design variables related to the geometry of structure at fatigue fracture points are determined and sensitivities of fatigue life at fracture points with respect to the variation of design variables are calculated. Then the vector composed of gaps between the target life and initial life cycles at fracture points is calculated. The linear algebraic equation to solve the variation of design variables is composed. From the equation, the design variables for reinforced structure are determined.
The deformation behavior of a bulk amorphous and crystallized amorphous $Zr_{22.5}Ti_{14}Cu_{12.5}Ni_{10}Be_{22.5}$ alloy extracted from a commercial golf club head was characterized at room temperature ana $300^{\circ}C$. At room temperature, amorphous specimens revealed higher yield stress and ductility than partially crystallized alloy specimens. Amorphous alloy displayed some plasticity before fracture, which resulted from strain hardening and repeated crack initiation and propagation. The fracture is mainly localized on one major shear band, and the compressive fracture angle of the amorphous specimen between the stress axis and the fracture plane was about $40^{\circ}$ Scanning electron microscope observations revealed mainly a vein-like structure in the amorphous alloy But the fracture surface of partially crystallized amorphous alloy consisted of vein-like and featureless fracture structure. The partially crystallized alloy extracted from the thick part of the club fractured in the elastic region, at a much lower stress level than the amorphous, suggesting that relatively coarse crystal particles formed during cooling cause the brittle fracture.
