  • In this paper, main target is to select parameters for prediction of tool wear and detection of tool fracture. The research about choosing parameter for prediction of tool wear is done by using force ratios. Also current sensor, tool-dynamometer, and accelerometer are used for researching detection method of tool fracture. Experiment is done using Taguchi's method in medium machining conditions. Parameter which is best for prediction of tool wear and detection of tool fracture by deviation analysis is selected. In this paper, tool wear means flank wear.

  • Fatigue life prediction is based on fracture mechanics and database which is established from experimental method. Rubber material also uses the same way for fatigue life prediction. But the absence of standardization of rubber material, various way of composition by each rubber company and uncertainty of fracture criterion makes the design of fatigue life by experimental method almost impossible. Tearing energy which has its origin in energy release rate is evaluated as fracture criterion of rubber material and the applicability of fatigue life prediction method are considered. The system of measuring tearing energy using the principal of virtual crack extension method and fatigue life prediction by the minimum number of experiments are proposed.

  • A hole expansion process is an important process in producing a hub-hole in a wheel disc of a vehicle. In this process, the main parameter is the formability of a material that is expressed as the hole expansion ratio. In the process, a crack is occurred in the upper edge of a hole as the hole is expanded. Since prediction of the forming limit by hole expansion experiment needs tremendous time and effort, an appropriate fracture criterion has to be developed for finite element analysis to define forming limit of the material. In this paper, the hole expansion process of a hub-hole is studied by finite element analysis with ABAQUS/standard considering several ductile fracture criteria. The fracture mode and hole expansion ratio are compared with respect to the various fracture criteria. These criteria do not predict its fracture mode or hole expansion ratio adequately and show deviation from experimental results of hole expansion. A modified ductile fracture criterion is newly proposed to consider the deformation characteristics of a material accurately in a hole expansion process. A fracture propagation analysis at the hub-hole edge is also performed for high accuracy of prediction using the new fracture criterion proposed.

  • To predict busting failure in tubular hydroforming, the criteria for ductile fracture proposed by Oyane is combined with the finite element method. From the histories of stress and strain in each element obtained from finite element analysis, the fracture initiation site is predicted by mean of the criterion. The prediction by the ductile fracture criterion is applied to three hydroforming processes such as a tee extrusion, an automobile rear axle housing and lower am. For these products, the ductile fracture integral I is not only affected by the process parameters, but also by preforming processes. All the simulation results show the combination of the finite element analysis and the ductile fracture criteria is useful in the prediction of farming limit in hydroforming processes.

  • This paper suggests the scheme to simultaneously accomplish prediction of fracture initation and geometrical configuration of deformation in metal forming processes using the artificial neural network. A three-layer neural network is used and a back propagation algorithm is adapted to train the network. The Cockcroft-Latham criterion is used to estimate whether fracture occurs during the deformation process. The geometrical configuration and the value of ductile fracture are measured by finite element method. The prediction of network and numerical results of simple upsetting are compared. The proposed scheme has successfully predicted the geometrical configuration and fracture initiation.

  • In this paper, the fracture strength of the surface damaged laminates was predicted by applying the fracture strengths of the unflawed and flawed laminates. For prediction, the theoretical equation about the fracture strength of laminates was simplified applying classical laminate theory and was applied to the surface damaged laminates. Lagace's and Tsai's experimental data were used for verifying the theoretical equation. Moreover, to verify the theoretical prediction, an experiment was performed. Surface unflawed laminate and flawed laminates were fabricated and the experiments were made and these results were compared with theoretical predictions. The specimens' fiber direction was same to the tensile direction and the theoretical predictions and the experimental results were showed good agreement. Therefore, by this equation, the fracture strength of structures made of composites will be able to be predicted when the surface of the structures was damaged.

  • The current study is concerned with the prediction of fracture strains for DP980 steel sheets over a wide range of loading paths. The use of DP980 steel is increasing significantly in automotive industries for enhanced safety and higher fuel efficiency. The material behavior of advanced high-strength steels (AHSSs) sheets sometimes show unpredictable and sudden fracture during sheet metal forming. A modified Lou-Huh ductile fracture criterion is utilized to predict the formability of AHSSs because the conventional forming limit diagram (FLD) constructed based on necking is unable to evaluate the formability of AHSSs sheets. Fracture loci were extracted from three dimensional fracture envelopes by assuming the plane-stress condition to evaluate equivalent plastic strains at the onset of fracture for a wide range of loading paths. Three different types of specimens -- pure shear, dog-bone and plane strain grooved -- were utilized for tensile testing to calibrate the fracture model of DP980 steel sheets. Fracture strains of each loading path were evaluated such that there shows little deviation between fracture strains predicted from the fracture model and the experimental measurements. From the comparison, it is clearly shown that the three dimensional fracture envelopes can accurately predict the onset of the fracture of DP980 steel sheets for complicated loading conditions from compressive loading to shear loading and to equibiaxial tensile loading.

  • Most of bulk metal forming processes may be limited by ductile fracture such as surface or internal cracks developing in the workpiece. It is important to identify the conditions within the deforming workpiece which may lead to fracture, and then it is possible to modify the forming processes to produce sound and reliable product. This paper suggests the scheme to simultaneously accomplish prediction of fracture initiation and analysis of deformation in metal forming processes. The Cockcroft-Latham criterion which is successfully applied to a variety of loading situations is used in the present investigation to estimate whether fracture occurs during the deformation process. The numerical predictions and experimental results of two types of metal forming process are compared, axisymmetric extrusion and simple upsetting. The proposed scheme has successfully predicted the fracture initiation found experimentally.
