  • Rib fixations for flail chest or displaced rib fractures are not a new technique. However, reports on rib fixations involving costal cartilage fractures are very few and surprisingly there are no reports of internal fixations involving only the costal cartilage in the English literature. The diagnosis is difficult and the necessity of the procedure may be quite controversial. Placing plates in screws into the costal cartilage alone may seem unstable and easily dislodged or stripped through the cartilage. We report a 31-year-old male scuba diver instructor who underwent rib fixations over his 7th and 8th costal cartilage ribs for severe pain. The procedure was done with conventional plates and screws. He had the plates and screws removed 2 months later due to lingering pain, but with them removed he is now quite happy with the results without pain. The procedure for fixation of painful overlapped costal cartilage is quite simple and can be done with the usual conventional methods, fixating plate and screws directly over the cartilage alone without fixation over the bony rib.

  • Injury of permanent teeth by trauma usually occurs to $8{\sim}10\;years$ old children, in mixed dentition. Fracture, dislocation, intrusion, extrusion, avulsion are the common types of trauma in teeth. The injuries which teeth are dislocated from the alveolar sockets can be treated by reduction and fixation. In this case report two children visited Wonkwang University Dental Hospital after the emergency treatment of tooth injury by other medical institutes. In these cases the injured teeth were not reducted properly and showed premature contact. So the teeth were dislocated from the alveolar sockets intentionally and fixed again in the proper position. Unproper reduction can cause premature contact, delay of healing, difficulty of mastication, and malocclusion. For this reason emergency rooms or local dental clinics where patients with dental trauma can be examined first, must know well about the treatment procedure of the injured teeth and should be consulted to the profession when necessary.

  • In this study, the circumferential creep behaviors ofpilgered advanced Zirconium alloy tubes such as Zr-Nb-O and Zr-Nb-Sn-Fe were investigated in the temperature range of $400\sim500^{\circ}C$ and in the stress range of 80$\sim$150MPa. The test results indicate that the stress exponent for the steady-state creep rate of the Zr-Nb-Sn-Fe alloy decreases with the increase of stress(from 6$\sim$7 to 4), while that of the Zr-Nb-O alloy is nearly independent of stress(5$\sim$6). The activation energy of creep deformation is found to be nearly the same as the activation energy for Zr self diffusion. This indicates that the creep deformation may be controlled by dislocation climb mechanism in Zr-Nb-O. On the other hand, the transition of stress exponent(from 6-7 to 4) in Zr-Nb Sn-Fe strongly suggests the transition of the rate controlling mechanism at high stresses. The lower stress exponent at high stresses in Zr-Nb-Sn-Fe can be explained by the dynamic deformation aging effect caused by interaction of dislocations with Sn substitutional atoms.

  • The acromioclavicular-hook-plate is one of the surgical treatments for distal clavicle fracture and traumatic acromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocation. Although this procedure can obtain rigid and accurate anatomical reduction of the AC joint, secondary widening of the hook-hole in the acromion is often seen during postoperative follow-up. This complication is owing to the high-degree of mobility of the AC joint. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the effect on these complications due to the position of the hook-hole. The purpose of the present study is to investigate three-dimensionally the effect due to the position of the hook-hole during arm abduction motion. We studied in vivo and three-dimensional kinematics of the normal shoulder joint with use of a markerless bone-registration technique. Magnetic resonance images of 14 shoulders of 7 healthy volunteers were acquired in 7 positions between $0^{\circ}$ and $180^{\circ}$ of abduction. We created three-dimensional computer models of the bones and the acromioclavicular-hook-plate. Based on the three-dimensional kinematics data, we simulated the widening of the hook-hole each different positioning of the hook-hole. The widths of the hook-holes almost linearly increased. And these widths significantly increased, when we put the hook-hole on the acromion from AC joint to 20 mm and 25 mm posterior position.

  • High temperature tensiles tests, steady state creep tests, internal stress tests and creep rupture tests using Al 7075 alloy were performed over the temperature range of 9$0^{\circ}C$~50$0^{\circ}C$ and stress range of 0.64~17.2(kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$) in order to investigate the creep behavior and predict creep rupture life From the apparent activation energy Qc and the applied stress exponent n measured, at the temperature range of 9$0^{\circ}C$~l2$0^{\circ}C$, the creep deformation seemed to be controlled by cross slip. On the other hand at the temperature of 20$0^{\circ}C$~23$0^{\circ}C$ the creep deformation seemed to be controlled by dislocation climb but at 47$0^{\circ}C$~50$0^{\circ}C$, by diffusion creep. And the rupture life(t$_{f}$) might be represented by anthermal process attributed to the difference of the applied stress dependence of Internal stress and the ratio of the Internal stress to the applied stress, the thermal activated process attributied to the temperature dependence of the internal stress. Also the ratio between stress dependence of primary creep rate and that of minimum creep rate was measured 0.46, the minimum creep rate is expected to be appromately obtained from master creep curve including the relationship primary creep rate and minumum creep rate. Finally the relationship new rupture parameter and logarithmic stress was represented with including the ratio between the dependence of primary creep rate and that of minimum creep rate, using the new rupture parameter the rupture life predition is exactly expected.d.

  • Since the 1990s, the second generation of Zirconium alloys containing main alloy compositions of Nb, Sn and Fe have been used as a replacement of Zircaloy-4 (Zr-Sn-Fe-Cr), a first-generation Zirconium alloy, to meet severe and rigorous reactor operating conditions characterized by high-burn-up, high-power and high-pH operations. In this study, the mechanical properties and creep behaviors of Zr-Sn-Fe-Cr and Zr-Nb-Sn-Fe alloys were investigated in a temperature range of $450{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ and in a stress range of $80{\sim}150\;MPa$. The mechanical testing results indicate that the yield and tensile strengths of the Zr-Nb-Sn-Fe alloy are slightly higher compared to those of Zr-Sn-Fe-Cr. This can be explained by the second phase strengthening of the $\beta$-Nb precipitates. The creep test results indicate that the stress exponent for the steady-state creep rate decreases with the increase in the applied stress. However, the stress exponent of the Zr-Sn-Fe-Cr alloy is lower than that of the Zr-Nb-Sn-Fe alloy in a relatively high stress range, whereas the creep activation energy of the former is slightly higher than that of the latter. This can be explained by the dynamic deformation aging effect caused by the interaction of dislocations with Sn substitutional atoms. A higher Sn content leads to a lower stress exponent value and higher creep activation energy.

  • In this study, constant loading test (CLT) was performed to evaluate the hydrogen embrittlement resistance for multipass FCA weld metals of 600MPa tensile strength grade. The microstructures of weld metal-2 having the smallest carbon equivalent (Ceq=0.37) consisted of grain boundary ferrite and widmanstatten ferrite in the acicular ferrite matrix. The weld metal-1 having the largest Ceq=0.47, showed the microstructures of grain boundary ferrite, widmanstatten ferrite and the large amount of bainite (vol.%=19%) in the acicular ferrite matrix. The weld metal-3 having the Ceq=0.41, which was composed of grain boundary ferrite, widmanstatten ferrite, and the small amount of bainite (vol.%=9%) in the acicular ferrite matrix. Hydrogen desorption spectrometry (TDS) used to analyze the amount of diffusible hydrogen and trapping site for the hydrogen pre-charged specimens electrochemically for 24 hours. With increasing the current density of hydrogen pre-charging, the released amount of diffusible hydrogen was increased. Furthermore, as increasing carbon equivalent of weld metals, the released diffusible hydrogen was increased. The main trapping sites of diffusible hydrogen for the weld metal having a low carbon equivalent (Ceq=0.37) were grain boundaries and those of weld metals having a relatively high carbon equivalent (Ceq: 0.41~0.47) were grain boundaries and dislocation. The fracture time for the hydrogen pre-charged specimens in the constant loading test was decreased as the carbon equivalent increased from 0.37 to 0.47. This result is mainly due to the increment of bainite that is vulnerable to hydrogen embrittlement.

  • Background: In a frontal sinus reconstruction, the literature primarily recommends a surgical approach for definite treatment with the exception of for anterior wall fractures with no dislocation. Many studies have assessed a range of methods for the reduction of frontal sinus fractures. This paper presents a case, in whom the anterior wall of the frontal sinus was reconstructed using an outer table calvarial bone graft in an en bloc manner. Patient and methods: A 36-year-old male visited the emergency room with a heavy injury to the forehead. He was diagnosed with fractures of the anterior and posterior wall of the frontal sinus. The neurosurgeon removed the fractured area and repaired the meninges. Afterwards, cranialization was performed and the opening of the nasofrontal duct was obstructed. After fixing the removed bone to its original location, all fragments of fractured anterior wall were purged out and the anterior wall reconstructed using an en bloc calvarial bone graft. Results: In the post-operative 8 months period, there were no complications, the round contour of the forehead was expressed well and the patient was satisfied with the result. Conclusion: There are many methods for reconstructing the anterior wall of the frontal sinus. On the other hand, in cases of large fracture sites with many fractured bone fragments, en bloc harvesting of the outer table calvarial bone could be a better choice than making use of only plates and screws because this method shows a good results in terms of aesthetics with a low complication rate.
