  • It is well known that mechanisms of fracture and crack growth depend upon material characteristics such as fracture toughness, environmental condition, crack geometry and mechanical properties. It seems to be very important to investighate the effects of the above factors on the behavior of structural components which contain flaws for the detailed evaluation of their integrity. In this experimental research, fracture behaviors of SK-5 high carbon steel was investigated by using Acoustic Emission(AE) technique. Fracturing processes of materials were estimated through both the tension test with nominal specimens and the fracture test with compact tension specimens. The critical applied load which corresponds to the crack initiation and propagation is very improtant for the determination of yield strength of fracture toughness. The critical applied load($P_Q$) was determined through AE method and the source of AE signal was estimated by fractography analysis. The experimental results may contribute to the safety analyses and strength evaluation of structures.

  • For the assessment of fracture behaviors of structural components, various fracture mechanics parameters have been applied to date. New approaches to analyze structural fracture performance under elastic-plastic condition have been proposed by the development of testing methods for characterization of material behavior which is defying to the analysis by conventional fracture parameters. In this study, on the assumption that, initiation of crack propagation of a piping materials occurs when the crack tip strain field reaches "the local fracture strain", following two major issues are discussed ; 1) The relationship between the critical value of J-integral($J_{IC}$) and the local fracture strain (${\varepsilon}_c$) in uniaxial tensile test in the region of maximum reduction area was described. 2) To proved the validity of above relations a series of tests were performed under various temperature and on the different piping materials.materials.

  • In the present work, the ductile fracture behaviors of ultra-high strength steel sheets along the different loading directions are investigated under various loading paths. Three loading paths, i.e., in-plane shear, uniaxial tension, plane strain tension deformations, are considered, and the corresponding specimens are described. The experiments are conducted using the digital image correlation (DIC) system to analyze the strain at the onset of the fracture. The experimental results show that the loading path for each specimen sample is linear, and different values of the fracture strains for the loading direction from the plane strain tension are observed. The ductile fracture model of the modified Mohr-Coulomb (MMC) is constructed based on the experimental data and evaluated along the rolling direction and transverse direction under various loading paths.

  • Fracture behaviors of pipes with local wall thinning are very important for the integrity of nuclear power plant. However, effects of local wall thinning on strength and fracture behaviors of piping system were not well studied. Acoustic emission(AE) has been widely used in various fields because of its extreme sensitivity, dynamic detection ability and location of growing defects. In this study, we investigated failure modes of locally wall thinned pipes and AE signals by bending test. From test results, we could be divided four types of failure modes of ovalization, crack initiation after ovalization, local buckling and crack initiation after local buckling. And fracture behaviors such as elastic region, yielding range, plastic deformation range and crack progress could be evaluated by AE counts, accumulative counts and time-frequency analysis during bending test. It is expected to be basic data that can protect a risk according to local wall thinning of pipes, as a real time test of AE.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among pain, depression, health behaviors, and activities of daily living (ADL) in older adults after femur fracture surgery. Methods: This was a descriptive correlational study. Ninety seven outpatients aged 65 or older were selected, who agreed to participate and visited the four hospitals located in G providence. Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) for pain, a Short form Geriatric Depression Scale (SGDS) for depression, health behavior scale and Korean version of Bathel Index for ADL were used. Data were analyzed using t-test and ANOVA, Pearson's correlation and the hierarchical regression analysis in SPSS 18. Results: Pain and depression were positively correlated (r=.35, p<.001). Pain and health behaviors (r=-.30, p=.010), pain and ADL (r=-.21, p=.044), depression and health behaviors (r=-.51, p<.001), depression and ADL (r=-.29, p=.004) were negatively correlated. The variables affecting the ADL was intake of a painkiller or not (${\beta}$=-.32), age (${\beta}$=-.25), transitional period after discharge (${\beta}$=.23) and depression (${\beta}$=-.23). ADL was accounted for 33.4% in total by these four variables. Conclusion: Interventions for alleviating pain, and managing depression would be effective in enhancing ADL in older adults after femur fracture surgery.

  • Fracture of Al2O3 tubes for different loading path under combined tension/torsion was investigated. Macroscopic directions of crack propagation agreed well with the maximum principal stress criterion, independent of the loading path. However, fracture strength from the proportional loading test($\tau$/$\sigma$= constant) showed either strengthening or weakening compared to that from uniaxial tension, depending on the ratio $\tau$/$\sigma$. The Weibull theory was capable to predict the strengthening of fracture strength in pure torsion, but not the weakening in the proportional loading condition. The strengthening or weakening of fracture strength in the proportional loading condition was explained by the effect of shear stresses in the plane of randomly oriented microdefects. Finally, a new empirical fracture criterion was proposed. This criterion is based on a mixed mode fracture criterion and experimental data for fracture of Al2O3 tubes under combined tension/torsion. The proposed fracture criterion agreed well with experimental data for both macroscopic directions of crack propagation and fracture strengths.

  • This research is focused on obtaining the fracture property of steel fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC) specimens at early ages of 1, 2, 3 and 7-day, respectively. For this purpose, three point bending tests of nine groups of SFRC beams with notch of 40mm depth and different steel fiber ratios were conducted. The experimental results of early age specimens were compared with the 28-day hardened SFRC specimens. The test results indicated that the steel fiber ratios and curing age significantly influenced the fracture properties of SFRC. A reasonable addition of steel fiber improved the fracture toughness of SFRC, while the fracture energy of SFRC developed with curing age. Moreover, a quadratic relationship between splitting strength and fracture toughness was established based on the experiment results. Additionally, afinite element (FE) method was used to investigate the fracture properties of SFRC.A comparison between the FE analysis and experiment results was also made. The numerical analysis fitted well with the test results, and further details on the failure behaviors of SFRC could be revealed by the suggested numerical simulation method.

  • To clarify the influence of precipitation microstructure and inclusion on the monotonic tensile fracture behaviors in 2090 alloy aged at $180^{\circ}C$, the detailed measurement of hardness, tensile strength, elongation and the observation of scanning electron micrography, transmision electron micrography have been carried out. The transgranular shear ductile fracture has been observed in specimen quenched after solution treatment at $500^{\circ}C$ for 45min. While the under-aged specimen was fractured in both transgranular shear ductile and intergranular fracture mode, the fracture mode of peak-aged and over-aged alloy was predominantly intergranular fracture. The fracture behavior of each ageing condition was influenced by the change of precipitation microstructural features. In the case of peak-aged and over-aged alloys, the coarse and heterogeneous slip band caused by both shearable nature of the ${\delta}^{\prime}(Al_3Li)$ precipitates and PFZ along the high angle grain boundary aid the localization of deformation, resulting in low energy intergranular fracture. It was also estimated that the fractured T-type intermetallic phases (inclusion) and the equilibrium ${\delta}$(AlLi) phases which were formed at grain boundaries palyed an important role in promoting intergranular fracture mode.

  • Many studies on the application of stainless steels as structural materials in buildings and infra-structures have been performed thanks to superior characteristics of corrosion resistance, fire resistance and aesthetic appeal. Experimental investigation to estimate the ultimate strength and fracture mode of the fillet-welded connections of cold-formed austenitic stainless steel (STS304L) with better intergranular corrosion resistance than that of austenitic stainless steel, STS304 commonly used has carried out by authors. Specimens were fabricated to fail by base metal fracture not weld metal fracture with main variables of weld lengths according to loading direction. All specimens showed a block shear fracture mode. In this paper, finite element analysis model was developed to predict the ultimate behaviors of welded connection and its validity was verified through the comparison with test results. Since the block shear behavior of welded connection due to stress triaxiality and shear-lag effects is different from that of bolted connection, stress and strain distributions in the critical path of tensile and shear fracture section were investigated. Test and analysis strengths were compared with those by current design specifications such as AISC, EC3 and existing researcher's proposed equations. In addition, through parametric analysis with extended variables, the conditions of end distance and longitudinal weld length for block shear fracture and tensile fracture were suggested.

  • The leak before break(LBB) concept is generalized on the design of LNG tanks, pressure vessels and nuclear reactor in that any leakage of containment, in whatever amount, will not result in catastropic failure. For this purpose it is necessary to determine the surface crack shape, the opening displacement and the risk of catastropic brittle fracture when it becomes a through crack. In this study the crack propagation behavior of surface flaws and the crack opening displacement of through cracks under combined membrane and bending stresses were investigated with fatigue tests and fracture toughness test of aluminium alloy A5083-O. And fracture mechanics analysis of the crack opening displacement of through cracks were made in order to develop a new model expressing the behaviors of COD under combined membrane and bending stresses.
