In this study, the possibility of evaluating the peculiar fracture strength of weldment in high strength steels was investigated by means of a small punch(SP) test. In order to obtain the ductile-brittle transition temperature(DBTT) of SP energy by which the fracture strength of weldment in structural steels such as SS41 and SM53B steels had been evaluated in our preceding publication, the effects of notches and loading rates on SP energy were discussed. It was found that the correspondence of SP energy to critical COD at test temperature -196.deg. C showed a linear relation with some deviation. The empirical correlation with scatter band, Esp/(Esp)p = 1.67[.delta./(.delta./sub c//(.delta./sub c/)/sub p/]-0.55, was developed between the SP energy ratio and critical COD ratio of each weld structure compared with parent material at test temperature -196.deg. C. In addition, there did not appear to be a significant effect of test materials and specimen size etc. on the correlation.
Recently, ultra-high strength bolts have been developed for weight lightening of a vehicle and fuel efficiency. However, some amount of diffusible H is absorbed into the bolt during its manufacturing process so that H embrittlement (HE) often occurs particularly in high strength bolts with a tempered martensitic microstructure. This brings attention to ultra-high strength pearlitic bolts with a high resistance to HE. Therefore, in this study the HE resistance of the 1.6 GPa grade pearlitic bolt was evaluated through tightening tests and slow strain rate tests (SSRTs), and fracture surfaces of failed bolts were comparatively observed. A critical H content for the tightening test turned out to be ~0.23-0.35 mass ppm. The bolt with a diffusible H content of ~0.35 mass ppm was fractured during the tightening test, showing a quasi-cleavage fracture surface, indicating the occurrence of HE. In addition, the bolt underwent premature elastic failure during the SSRT. This implies that the HE resistance of high strength bolts can be evaluated by both tightening test and SSRT.
The effect of porosity on the crack propagation is studied by using the cohesive zone model. Standard mode I fracture test were done by using compact tension specimens with various porosities. Load-load line displacement curves and ${\delta}_5$-crack resistance curves for various porosities were obtained from experiments. The cohesive zone model proposed by Xu and Needleman was employed to describe the crack propagation in porous media, and the Gurson model is used for constitutive relation of porous materials. These models were implemented into user subroutines of a finite element program ABAQUS. The fracture mode changes from ductile fracture to brittle fracture as the porosity increases. Numerical calculations agree well with experimental results.
It is well-known that the mechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced composites under hydrostatic pressure environment is different from that of atmospheric pressure environment. It is also known that the mechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced composites is affected by a strain rate. In this work, we investigated the effect of strain rate on the compressive elastic modulus, fracture stress, and fracture strain of carbon/epoxy composites under hydrostatic pressure environment. The material used in the compressive test was unidirectional carbon/epoxy composites and the hydrostatic pressures applied was 270㎫. Compressive tests were performed applying three strain rates of 0.05%/sec, 0.25%/sec, and 0.55%/sec. The results showed that the elastic modulus increased with increasing strain rate while the fracture stress was little affected by the strain rate. The results also showed that the fracture strain decreased with increasing strain rate.
Welding structures will be occurred sudden crack or failure by reduced fracture toughness in case of low temperature. To protect these unstable fracture is very important. Because fracture of welding part come from welding faults or residual stress, critical stress intensity factors are acquired at temperatures between $22^{\circ}C$ and $-70^{\circ}C$ from base metal, welding metal and H.A.Z. It was studied effectiveness of annealing and affection of residual stress under low temperatures. In case of fracture toughness test, it showed that fracture toughness value decreased, according to the decrease of temperature. Expecially In case that compressive residual stress was existed, $K_C$ increased.
Bending strength, bending elastic modulus ,and fracture toughness of different types of dental composite resins were deter mined. The relationship between bending strength, fracture toughness and filler volume fraction of dental composite resin was understood. In Acoustic Emission(AE) behavior during fracture toughness test, characteristic generation patterns of each type were understood. The fracture toughness values, AE generation patterns, and the nature of fracture surface were analyzed to understand fracture behavior of dental composite resin.
In this study, the size effect in measuring the fracture toughness of rock was investigated using the ISRM Suggested Method for Fracture toughness using Chevron Bend Specimens. Total 58 specimens were prepared with 4 different diameters, 29, 42, 54, 68mm and center cut-chevron notch. In addition to this, to evaluated the effect of anisotropy of Jecheon granite, which is the sample for this study, core drilling direction was adjusted perpendicular(short transverse) and parallel(arrester) to the rift plane in the sample and the measured fracture toughness for each direction were compared. Important results obtained from this study are as follows. Level ll test condition is more adequate than l, because of low data scattering and precision and corrected fracture toughness of Jechoen granite measured and 2.2MPa{{{{ SQRT { m} }}}} for arrester direction with minimum initial crack length 0.7cm. From the relationship between core diameter and initial crack length presented in the ISRM testing method, the specimen diameter should be bigger than 47mm. The fracture toughnesses measured for arrester and short transverse directon show 10% difference. This is to the anisotropy of Jecheon granite possessing rift plane.
The interfacial zone in concrete materials is extensive, geometrically complex, and constitutes inherently weak zones that limit the concrete performance. Motar-aggregate interfaces play a major role in the fracture processing in concrete composites. Also, the interfacial bond considerably influence mechanical properties of concrete such as modulus of elasticity, strength, and fracture energy, Characterization of the interfacial properties is, therefore, essential to overcome the limitations associated with the interfaces. an objective of this paper is to investigate the corelationship between the fracture toughness of mortar-aggregate interface and the concrete properties such as strengths and elastic moduli. It is observed from the test results that interface fracture toughness is closely related with the compressive strength rather than other properties. At early ages, the development of both tensile strength and elastic modulus are much greater thatn that of both interface fracture toughness and compressive strength.
