  • In this paper, an evaluation method of fracture toughness on interface cracks has been investigated under various mixed-mode conditions of the bonded scarf joints. Two types of the bonded scarf joints with an interface crack were prepared to analyze the stress intensity factors using boundary element method(BEM) and to perform the fracture toughness test. From the results of fracture toughness experiments and BEM analysis, an evaluation method of fracture toughness on interface cracks in the bonded components of dissimilar materials has been proposed and discussed.

  • In this pater, a method of strength evaluation applying fracture mechanics in adhesively bonded joints of A1/A1 materials was investigated. Various adhesively bonded joints of double-cantilever beam with a interfacial crack in its adhesive layer were prepared for the fracture toughness test of comprehensive mixed mode conditions from nearly pure mode I to mode II. The experiment of fracture toughness was carried out under various mixed mode conditions with an interfacial crack and critical energy release rate, Gc by the experimental measurements of compliances was determined. From the results, fracture toughness on mixed mode with an interfacial crack is well characterized by strain energy release rate and a method of strength evaluation by the fracture toughness in adhesively bonded joints of A1/A1 materials was discussed.

  • This study introduces a new algorithm to determine size independent values of fracture energy, fracture toughness, and fracture process zone length in three-point bending specimens with shallow to deep notches. By using the exact beam theory, a concept of equivalent notch length is introduced for specimens with no notches in order to predict the peak loads with acceptable precisions. Moreover, the method considers the variations of fracture process zone length and effects of higher order terms of stress field in each specimen size. In this paper, it was demonstrated that the use of some recently developed size effect laws raises some concerns due to the use of nonlinear regression analysis. By using a comprehensive fracture test data, provided by Hoover and Bazant, the algorithm has been assessed. It could be concluded that the proposed algorithm can facilitate a powerful tool for size effect study of three-point bending specimens with different notch lengths.

  • In this paper, the possibilities of the laser overlap spot welding were studied to utilize the advantageous properties of amorphous metal foils. In order to estimate the usage of amorphous metals foils as structural members, the tensile shear strength and the fracture features were investigated. Although the crystalline zone on the surface was formed, it was not the direct cause of the fracture of the weld. The fracture of the weld resulted from the geometry discontinuity between the workpiece and the protrusion zone, which was formed during the weld process. The vein pattern - the typical feature of the fracture of the amorphous metal - was formed on the fracture surface. The tensile shear stress was reached to 1200 N/㎟ (2-foils overlap welding) and 900 N/㎟ (10-foils overlap welding), whereas the tensile strength of the workpiece was 1500-2000 N/㎟.

  • Since fracture surface presents clear evidence to describe the circumstances of material failure event, analysis of fracture surface should provide plenty of useful information for failure prevention. Thus if we extract proper information from the fracture surface, the safety evaluation, for plant component could be more accurate. In general, the chaotic morphology of fracture surface is determined by the degree of material degradation as well as by other factors such as type of load, geometry of specimen, notch condition, microstructure of material and environment. In this research, we developed a fractal analysis technology for the fracture surface of aged turbine rotor steel based on the slit-island technique using an image analyzer. Moreover the correlation between the fractal dimension and the aging time was studied.

  • Purpose: The Purpose of this study is to compare the fracture strength of 4 kinds of direct composite resins. Methods: his study performed experiments on the fracture strength of direct composite resins after polymerizing 4 kinds of direct composite resins on the MOD cavity standard specimens. Results: The fracture strength of Aelite(Bisco) was the highest at 176.26N(p<0.05). According to post-hoc study with Turkey honest significant difference by multiple comparison on fracture strength test results, there were statistically significant differences between all kinds of direct composite resin. But the statistical difference between Z350(3M) and Spectrum(DP) was not significant. Conclusion: Aelite(Bisco) scored the highest concerning the fracture strength.

  • Strength test using strain rosette gage have been conducted to investigate safety of an auxiliary tank in a high-pressure air compressor. Thickness of auxiliary tanks in 6063-T5 aluminum at toy are 9mm and 17mm. The result of strength test make a comparison the design in strength of materials by nominal stress and the design in fracture mechanics with consideration of crack size. Summarizing the result: Comparing with the safe working pressure of the strength test and that of the design method in strength of materials by nominal stress with the experimental values, it makes difference 11% and 39% for 9mm and 17mm thickness of auxiliary tanks, respectively, and that of the design method by fracture mechanics, it makes difference 4% and 5% for them, respectively. It is confirmed that the design by fracture mechanics is more economical and safe design than the design in strength of materials by nominal stress.

  • In this study, after concrete cylinders were made on the condition of varying water-to -cement ratio, and cured 80 days compressive strength and splitting tensile strength were performed and moduls of elasticy is obtained. The fracture energy was obtained by acting three point bending on the 80cm in length. This test involved static loading test and dynamic loading test. In this work, the new interrelation of the material constants was obtained clearly and the property of the mixture was inspected, including the relation between the fracture energy and all kind of the material constants.

  • Fracture behaviors of pipes with local wall thinning are very important for the integrity of nuclear power plant. However, effects of local wall thinning on strength and fracture behaviors of piping system were not well studied. Acoustic emission(AE) has been widely used in various fields because of its extreme sensitivity, dynamic detection ability and location of growing defects. In this study, we investigated failure modes of locally wall thinned pipes and AE signals by bending test. From test results, we could be divided four types of failure modes of ovalization, crack initiation after ovalization, local buckling and crack initiation after local buckling. And fracture behaviors such as elastic region, yielding region, plastic deformation region and crack progress region could be evaluated by AE counts, accumulative counts and time-frequency analysis during bending test. The result of the frequency range is expected to be basic data that can inspect plants in real-time.
