  • Recently, the steel parts used at the aerospace and automobile industries are required to be used light weight parts. Therefore, used material, steel have to be a high stress, which is an indispensable condition in this field. At the consideration of parts design, high hardness of the lightweight parts have an benefit of saving fuel and material. A high stress of metal has a point of difference according to the shape of design, external cyclic load and condition of vibration. A crack generates on the surface of metal or under yield stress by defect of inner metal defect or surface defect and slowly, this crack grow stable growth. Finally, rapidity failure phenomena is happen. Fatigue failure_phenomena, which happen in metal, bring on danger in human life and property therefor, anti-fatigue failure technology take an important part of current industries Currently, the shot peening is used for removing the defect from the surface of steel and improving the fatigue strength on surface. Therefore, this paper investigated the effect on frcature toughness using shot peening which is improve the resistance of crack growth and crack expansion rate by fatigue that make a compressive residual stress on surface.

  • Adhesive-bonded joints are widely used in the industry. Recently, applications of adhesive bonding joints have been increased extensively in automobile and aircraft industry. The strength of adhesive joints is influenced by the surface roughness, adhesive shape, stress distribution, and etc. However, the magnitude of the influence has not yet been clarified because of the complexity of the phenomena. In this study, as the fundamental research of adhesive bonding joints, the effects of adhesive shape and loading speed on bonding strength properties and durability of aluminum to polycarbonate single-lap joints were studied. To evaluate the effect of adhesive shape, several modified shapes were used, and loading speeds were varied from 0.05 to 5 mm/min. As a result, the load-displacement distribution was shown a brittle fracture tendency. The trigonal edged single lap and bevelled lap joints showed the higher strength than the plain single lap, trigonal single lap, joggle lap and double lap joints in same adhesive area. The fractures of trigonal single lap and trigonal edged single lap joints that had the higher strength level were shown as the mixture type of the cohesive and interfacial-failure, mostly joggle lap joints that had the lower strength level were shown as the adhesive-failure.

  • Fracture of prestressed concrete beams is studied with a novel and robust three-dimensional meshfree method. The meshfree method describes the crack as a set of cohesive crack segments and avoids the representation of the crack surface. It is ideally suited for a large number of cracks. The crack is modeled by splitting particles into two particles on opposite sides of the crack segment and the shape functions of neighboring particles are modified in a way the discontinuous displacement field is captured appropriately. A simple, robust and efficient way to determine, on which side adjacent particles of the corresponding crack segment lies, is proposed. We will show that the method does not show any "mesh" orientation bias and captures complicated failure patterns of experimental data well.

  • Resistance spot welding of TRIP780 steels was investigated to enhance understanding of weld fracture mode after tensile shear testing (TST) and L-shape tensile testing (LTT). The main failure mode for spot welds of TRIP780 steels was partial interfacial fracture (PIF). Although PIF does not satisfy the minimum button diameter (4${\surd}$t) for acceptable welds, it shows enough load carrying capacity of resistance spot welds for advanced high strength steels. In the analysis of displacement controlled L-shape tensile test results, cracks initiated at the notch of the faying surface and propagated through the interface of weldments, and finally, cracks change path into the sheet thickness direction. Use of the ductility ratio and CE analysis suggested that the occurrence of PIF is closely related to high hardness and brittle welds, which are caused by fast cooling rates and high chemical compositions of TRIP steels. Analysis of the hold time and weld time in a welding schedule demonstrated that careful control of the cooling rate and the size of a weld nugget and the HAZ zone can reduce the occurrence of PIF, which leads to sound welds with button fractures (BFs).

  • The behavior of corner crack propagation by unidirectional plane bending fatigue was investigated in the butt welded joints of SS41 and SM50 steel plates including an edge through-thickness notch. The properties of fatigue crack propagation were inspected in the weld metal, heat-affected zone, and base metal of the welded joints. Main results obtained are as follows; (1) When a plate with an edge through-thickness notch is loaded by plane bending fatigue in indirection, the 2 variant corner cracks on the upper and lower edge of the plate are initiated and propagated respectively from the notch. (2) In case of a specimen containing a corner crack, it is more reasonable to estimate the crack propagation rate by area of fracture surface than by crack surface length. (3) The rate of fatigue crack propagation becomes faster in the following order; weld metal, heat-affected zone, and base metal. (4) The specimen including reinforcement shape is rapidly failed throughout bond due to effect of its shape when the repeated load exceeds a certain cycle.

  • End milling is available for machining the variable shape of products and has brrn widely applied in many Manufacturing industries. The surface finish of machined parts determines quality and functionality of products. Surface roughness causes friction, noise, fracture, glossiness and seizure, so many research had been performed to precisely. In particular an experimental analysis was carried out to investigate the influence ofsurface roughness on the fractal dimension. This parameter was assumed to contain not only information of roughness but also extra meaning. Experiments which were performed under various cutting conditions to compare fractal dimension with surface roughness R /sab a/ show fractal dimension to be useful parameter for determining of roughness.

  • Metal Matrix Composite(MMC) material of 30% SiC particulate based on A1 matrix was machined by drilling and Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) processes. When drilling process was executed, surface fracture due to brittle property near the bottom was found. It was also found the possiblity of difficult shape of EDM process for MMC material, but few the research about basic EDM characteristics. Material Removal Rate(MRR) was examined for different conditions and the surface morphology was evaluated by roughness values and Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM) research. The higher the current is, the more MRR was obtained but the higher MRR was showed around 0.45 duty factor. The average roughness of EDMed surface was slightly changed with increased pulse current and increases with duty factor. The SEM photographs of EDMed surface showed recast region after melting.

  • Titanium specially has high specific strength, excellent mechanical properties as fatigue strength and fracture ductility, good corrosion resistance, and therefore are broadly applied to the various fields. It is required the developmennt for the skills of wire-cut electrical discharge machining(WEDM), but the WEDMed surface was found to be worst due to the attached components of wire. Therefore precision maching method like lapping is necessary for getting high quilty surface. Roughness of lapped surface, surface hardness to each process depth and improved method of surface shape were stuided experimentally, by changing of grain size of diamond lap material and lapping pressure with constant speed in lapping process.

  • The corrosion fatigue fracture behaviour of dual phase steel was investigated in 3% NaCl solution at 302MPa and 137MPa. Fatigue test was conducted by cantilever type of self-made rotary bending fatigue testing machine. The fatigue strength increased with increasing the hardness of 2nd phase. Corrosion pit originated at the boundary of the 2nd phase. The size and number of corrosion pits were influenced by the 2nd phase hardness, and pits remained constant in size just after they were transited into cracks. The life of crack initiation was effected by stress level. The shape of relation of .DELTA. K and da/dN has smaller scattering in it in 3% NaCl solution than that in air. The higher the 2nd phase hardness is, the greater the corrosion fatigue life becomes. Corrosion fatigue fracture behaviour was primarily effected by mechanical factor in case of high stress(302MPa), but by electro-chemical reaction in a lower stress(137MPa). As stress level got lower and hardness of the 2nd phase got higher, the roughness of fracture surface increased.

  • Some materials exhibit a rising K-R curve, while the K-R curve for other materials is flat. The shape of the K-R curve depends on material behavior and, to a lesser extent, on the configuration of the cracked structure. The K-R curve for an ideally brittle material is flat because the surface energy is an invariant material property. However, the K-R curve can take on a variety of shapes when nonlinear material behavior accompanies fracture. Five different hot-rolled thin plates are tested to investigate K-R curve behavior. A special experimental apparatus is used to prevent specimens from buckling.
