  • An experiment with the objective of providing guidelines for joint depth determination and timing of contraction joint sawcutting to avert uncontrolled cement concrete pavement cracking has been conducted. Theoretical analysis and laboratory tests were performed to help in understanding and analyzing the field observation. Using two-dimensional elastic fracture mechanics, the influence of several parameters on crack propagation was delineated by a parametric study, involving initial notch ratio, joint spacing, Young's modulus and thermal expansion coefficient of concrete, temperature gradient, and modulus of subgrade reaction. Bimaterials made of rock plus cement mortar and rock plus polymer mortar were applied to the concrete in a field test section, and they were subjected to fracture tests. These tests have shown that fracture mechanics is a powerful tool not only in judging the quality of the jointed cement concrete pavement but also in providing a criterion for crack propagation and delamination. Based on fracture mechanics, a method is proposed to determine the joint depth, sawcut timing, and spacing of the jointed cement concrete pavement. This method has successfully been applied to a test section in Seohaean expressway. This study also summarizes the research results obtained from a field test for jointed plain concrete pavement, which was also carried out on the Seohaean expressway.

  • Elastic-plastic fracture toughness $J_{1c}$ can be used as an effective design criterion in elastic plastic fracture mechanics. Most of these systems are operated at high temperature and $J_{1c}$ values are affected by temperature. therefore, the $J_{1c}$ valuse at high temperature must be determined for use of integrity evaluation and designing of such systems. Elastic-plastic fracture toughness $J_{1c}$ tests were performed on SA516 carbon steel plate and test results were analyzed according to ASTM E 813-8, ASTM 1813-89. Safety and integrity are required for reactor pressure vessels vecause pthey are operated in high temperature. there are single specimen method, which used as evaluation of safety and integrity for reactor pressure vessels. In this study, elastic-plastic fracture toughness$(J_{1c})$ and $J-\Delta{a}$ of SA 516/70 steel used as reactor pressure vessel steel are measured and evaluated at room Temperature, $150^{\circ}C$, $250^{\circ}C$ and $370^{\circ}C$ according to unloading compliance method.

  • Recently, carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) have been used in various fields because of its high specific modulus, and chemical properties. Most products in which CFRP composites are used are manufactured by joining the product components by bolts or pins. Holes for bolts and pins decrease the strength of the components because these holes act as notches in the structures. In this study, the fracture strength of CFRP plain-weave composite plates containing holes is experimentally investigated to examine the effects of hole-size and specimen width on notched tensile strength. The results show that the characteristic length considered in the point stress criterion depends on the hole size and specimen width. There exists a certain relation between notched tensile strength and characteristic length. Fracture criterion is redefined on basis of this relation.

  • This is the third of several companion papers dealing with the derivation of material constants for ductile failure criteria under hydrostatic stress. It was observed that the ultimate engineering stresses and elongations at fracture from tensile tests for round specimens with various notch radii tended to increase and decrease, respectively, because of the stress triaxiality. The engineering stress curves from tests are compared with numerical simulation results, and it is proved that the curves from the two approaches very closely coincide. Failure strains are obtained from the equivalent plastic strain histories from numerical simulations at the time when the experimental engineering stress drops suddenly. After introducing the new concept of average stress triaxiality and accumulated average strain energy, the material constants of the Johnson-Cook failure criterion for critical energies of 100%, 50%, and 15% are presented. The experimental results obtained for EH-36 steel were in relatively good agreement with the 100% critical energy, whereas the literature states that aluminum fits with a 15% critical energy. Therefore, it is expected that a unified failure criterion for critical energy, which is available for most kinds of ductile materials, can be provided according to the used materials.

  • An electrical steel strip is commonly used as a core material in all types of electric transformers and motors. It is produced by a cold rolling process. In this paper, a damage-mechanics-based approach that predicts the edge fracture of an electrical steel strip during cold rolling is presented. We adopted the normal tensile stress criterion and the fracture energy method as a damage initiation criterion and a damage evolution scheme, respectively. We employed finite element analysis (FEA) to simulate crack initiation and propagation at the initial notch located at the edges of the strip. The material constants required in FEA were experimentally obtained by tensile tests using a standard and a notched sheet-type specimen. The results reveal that the edge crack was initiated at the entrance of the roll bite and that it rapidly evolved at the exit. The evolution length of the edge crack increased as the length of the initial notch as well as the front tension reel force of the strip increased.

  • An engineering method is suggested to calculate the applied load versus crack extension in the elastic-plastic fracture. The condition for an increment of crack extension is set by a critical increment of crack-up opening displacement(CTOD). The ratio of the CTOD increment to the incremental crack extention is a critical crack-tip opening angle(CTOA), assumed to be constant for a material of a given thickness. The Dugdale model of crack-tip deformation in an infinite plate is applied to the method, and a complete solution for crack extension and crack instability is obtained. For finite-size specimens of arbitrary geometry in general yielding, an approximate generalization of the Dugdale model is suggested so that the approximation approaches the small-scale yielding solution in a low applied load and the finite-element solution in a large applied load. Maximum load is calculated so that an applied load attains either a limit load on an unbroken ligament or a peak load during crack extension. The proposed method was applied to three-point bend specimens of a carbon steel SM45C in various sizes. Reasonable agreements are found between calculated maximum loads and experimental failure loads. Therefore, the method can be a viable alternative to the J-R curve approach in the elastic-plastic fracture analysis.

  • Interfacial fracture toughness under various mixed-mode loading is measured to provide a mixed-mode fracture criterion of a composite/metal bonded joint. Experimental fracture characterization tests were carried out using a SLB (single leg bending) specimen, which controls mode ratio with the specimen thickness. The experimental result of the SLB test conforms that interfacial fracture toughness increases as the mode II component increases. The effect of loading mode on interfacial crack growth is investigated on the basis of crack path observation using microscopic image acquisition technique. The influence of interfacial roughness on adhesion strength is also discussed.

  • Analysis on failure of the panel glass under mechanical shock is the main topic of this study. Since the glass for the LCD panel is thin, it needs to be designed to have enough toughness against mechanical shock. In this paper, a process of estimating fracture of the panel glass is proposed to guarantee reliability of the product. The fracture toughness of the panel glass is used as a criterion of the fracture based on an experimental approach. The stress intensity factor was calculated considering a model with the largest initial crack size on a cut surface and with the boundary force obtained from a dynamic finite element analysis. Critical surface roughness on the cut surface of a typical glass panel, to prevent fracture in case of bending mode, is obtained.

  • This paper investigates the characteristics of a hydro-mechanical punching process. The hydro-mechanical punching process is divided into two stages: the first stage is the mechanical half piercing in which an upper punch goes down before the initial crack is occurred; the second stage is the hydro punching in which a lower punch goes up until the final fracture is occurred. Ductile fracture criteria such as the Cockcroft, Brozzo and Oyane are adopted to predict the fracture of sheet material. The index values of ductile fracture criteria are calculated with a user material subroutine, VUMAT in the ABAQUS Explicit. The hydrostatic pressure retards the initiation of a crack in the upper region of the blank and induces another crack in the lower region of the blank during the punching process. The final fracture zone is placed at the middle surface of the blank to the thickness direction. The result demonstrates that the hydro-mechanical punching process makes a finer shearing surface than the conventional one as hydrostatic pressure increases.
