A novel approach to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using leaf extract of Canna edulis Ker-Gawl. (CELE) under ambient conditions is reported here. The as-prepared AgNPs were analyzed by UV-visible spectroscopy, transmission emission microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, energy-dispersive analysis of X-ray spectroscopy, zeta potential, and dynamic light scattering. The AgNPs showed excellent antimicrobial activity against various pathogens, including bacteria and various fungi. The biocompatibility of the AgNPs was analyzed in the L929 cell line using NRU and MTT assays. Acridine orange/ethidium bromide staining was used to determine whether the AgNPs had necrotic or apoptotic effects on L929 cells. The concentration of AgNPs required for 50% inhibition of growth of mammalian cells is far more than that required for inhibition of pathogenic microorganisms. Thus, CELE is a candidate for the eco-friendly, clean, cost-effective, and nontoxic synthesis of AgNPs.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) are widely distributed in the environment and are often implicated as potential carcinogens. The chromatographic methods of detection and quantitative determination of PAHs in environmental samples are costly, time consuming, and do not account for all kinds of PAHs. This work describes a quantitative spectroscopic method for the analysis of mixtures of eight PAHs using multivariate calibration models for Fourier transform near infrared(FT-NIR) spectral data. The NIR spectra of mixtures of PAHs (anthracene, pyrene, 1,2-benzanthracene, perylene, chrysene, benzo(a)pyrene, 1-methylanthracene and benzo(ghi)perylene) were measured in the wavelength range from 1100 nm to 2500 nm. The spectral data were processed using a partial least squares regression. We have studied the spectral characteristics of NIR spectra of mixtures of PAHs. It was possible to determine each PAM used in this study at the environmental level(mg L-1) in the laboratory samples. Further development may lead to the rapid determination of more PAHs in typical environmental samples.

Nanocomposite films were prepared by sol-gel synthesis from vanadium triisopropoxide with $poly((oxyethylene)_9$ methacrylate)-graft-poly(dimethyl siloxane), POEM-g-PDMS, producing in situ growth of vanadium oxide within the continuous ion-conducting POEM domains of micro phase-separated graft copolymer. The formation of vanadium oxide was confirmed by wide angle x-ray scattering (WAXS) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) revealed the spatially-selective incorporation of vanadium oxide in the POEM domains. Upon the incorporation of vanadium oxide, the domain periodicity of the graft copolymer monotonously increased from 17.2 to 21.0 nm at a vanadium content 14 v%, above which it remained almost invariant. The selective interaction of vanadium oxide with POEM was further verified by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and FT-IR spectroscopy. The nanocomposite films exhibited excellent mechanical properties $(l0^{-5}-10^{-7}dyne/cm^2)$, mostly due to the confinement of vanadium oxide in the POEM chains as well as the interfaces created by the microphase separation of the graft copolymer.
The reportedly synergistic effects of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene hybrids have prompted strong demand for an efficient modifier to enhance their dispersion. Here, we investigated the ability of poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN) to overcome the van der Waals interaction of multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs) and graphene by employing a simple wrapping process involving ultrasonication and subsequent centrifugation of PAN/MWCNT/graphene solutions. The physical wrapping of MWCNTs and graphene with PAN was investigated for various PAN concentrations, in an attempt to simplify and improve the polymer-wrapping process. Transmission electron microscopy analysis confirmed the wrapping of the MWCNTs and graphene with PAN layers. The interaction between the graphitic structure and the PAN molecules was examined using proton nuclear magnetic resonance, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and Raman spectroscopy. The obtained results revealed that the cyano groups of the PAN molecules facilitated adhesion of the PAN molecules to the MWCNTs and graphene for polymer wrapping. The resulting enhanced dispersion of MWCNTs and graphene was verified from zeta potential and shelf-life measurements.
Activated carbon spheres (ACS) were prepared at different heating rates by carbonization of the resole-type phenolic beads (PB) at $950^{\circ}C$ in $N_2$ atmosphere followed by activation of the resultant char at different temperatures for 5 h in $CO_2$ atmosphere. Influence of heating rate on porosity and temperature on carbon structure and porosity of ACS were investigated. Effect of heating rate and temperature on porosity of ACS was also studied from adsorption isotherms of nitrogen at 77 K using BET method. The results revealed that ACS have exhibited a BET surface area and pore volume greater than $2260\;m^2/g$ and $1.63\;cm^3/g$ respectively. The structural characteristics variation of ACS with different temperature was studied using Raman spectroscopy. The results exhibited that amount of disorganized carbon affects both the pore structure and adsorption properties of ACS. ACS were also evaluated for structural information using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy. ACS were evaluated for chemical composition using CHNS analysis. The ACS prepared different temperatures became more carbonaceous material compared to carbonized material. ACS have possessed well-developed pores structure which were verified by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). SEM micrographs also exhibited that ACS have possessed well-developed micro- and meso-pores structure and the pore size of ACS increased with increasing activation temperature.

CdSe nanoparticles were prepared by chemical solution methods using $CdCl_2{\cdot}4H_2O$ (or $Cd(NO_3)_ 2{\cdot}4H_2O$) and $Na_2SeSO_3$. The characteristics of CdSe nanoparticles were controlled by the react ion time, reaction temperature and reaction method as well as the surfactants. Cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide(CTAB) was used as a capping agent to control the chemical reactions in aqueous solution. Polyvinylalcohol(PVA) was used as a templet in sono-chemical method. CdSe nanoparticles synthesized in aqueous solution showed homogeneous size distribution with relatively stable surface. CdSe nanoparticles synthesized in non-aqueous solution containing diethanolamine(DEA) showed the structure transformation from cubic to hexagonal as the reduction temperature increased from 80 to $160^{\circ}C$. Core shell CdSe was synthesized by sono-chemical method. Characteristics of CdSe nanoparticles were analyzed using transmission electron microscopy(TEM), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), x-ray diffraction(XRD), UV-Vis absorption spectra, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR) and photoluminescence spectra spectroscopy(PL). This paper presents simple routes to prepare CdSe nanoparticles for solar cell applications.
Wastewater from textile industries is a major cause of water pollution in most developing countries. In order to address the issues of water pollution and high cost for treatment processes, the use of an inexpensive and environmentally benign adsorbents has been studied. The objective was to find a better alternative to the conventional methods. Lemon grass waste (ash) collected from a lemon grass stream distillation subunit in Bhutan was tested for dye removal from aqueous solutions. The study investigated the removal of methylene blue using the following operational parameters: initial concentration (100-600 mg/L), contact time, adsorbent dose (0.1-0.55 gm/100 mL), and pH (3-10). It was found that the percentage removal of dye increased with a decrease of the initial concentration and increased contact time and dose of adsorbent. The basic pH solution of dye showed better adsorption capacity as compared to the acidic dye solution. Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms were fitted to the data well. Data fitted better to Lagergren pseudo 2nd order kinetics than a 1st order kinetic model. Surface morphology was also examined via scanning electron microscopy. An elemental analysis was also carried out and the chemical composition and functional groups were analyzed using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy techniques, respectively. The obtained results indicate that lemon grass ash could be employed as a low cost alternative to commercial activated carbon in wastewater treatment for the removal of dyes.

In recent years, along with the development of ultrasonic probe with wide frequency range, the digitization of measuring instrument, and the development of operating process technics, it is possible to analyze ultrasonic pulse in frequency range. In this paper, applying to flaw model the ultrasonic spectroscopy method that can analyze ultrassonic pulse in frequency range, we examine the possibility of quantification of flaw and apply its result to the void and seperation in LSI package. Consequently, by using the change in frequency distribution and central frequency of sltrasonic pulse detected from flaw, the estimation of shape, size, and depth of flaw is possible. The change in central frequency is changed minutely by the sample materals and position of flaw, but changed mainly by the shape and size of flaw. And we can quantify the shape and size of flaw in LSI pakcage using the experimental result through flaw model.

Silicom oxide films with good water repellency were prepared by rf plasma-enhanced CVD (rf-PECVD) using four kinds of organosilicon compound, which had different number of methyl ($CH_3$) groups, and oxygen as gas sources. The differences in the deposition rates, film composition and film properties were studied in detail. Water repellency depended on the number of $CH_3$ groups in the organosilicon compounds and the partial pressure of oxygen in the plasma. The highest contact angle for water drops, about 95 degrees, was obtained when trimethy lmethoxy silane (TMMOS) was used. The contact angle decreased with the amount of oxygen gas introduced into the plasma. The dissociation of $CH_3$ groups by adding oxygen was comfirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The optical properties were estimated by double-beam spectroscopy and ellipsometry. The transmittance of the glass plate coated by the film prepared with tetramethoxy silane (TMOS) was about 90% and the refractive index of film was 1.44. This value was smaller than the refractive index of a glass plate(soda lime glass, refractive index is 1.515) and this film played a role of anti-refractive coating.
In this study, hydrophilic polyurethane (PU) was synthesized by one shot process to get good non-swelling effect and to keep high breathability using reactive silicone oil of mono terminal and bi-terminal types. We also blended non reactive silicone oil with pure hydrophilic PU to compare non-swelling effect and breathability with hydrophilic PU synthesized by the two types of reactive silicone oils. The hydrophilic films were analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray photo electron (XPS) spectroscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), breathability, waterproofness, tensile strength, contact angle and swelling effect. The results showed that the film made by hydrophilic PU which was synthesized with mono terminal type silicone oil provided good non-swelling effect and acceptable moisture permeability due to the modified surface properties.
