  • This paper presents and compares several techniques that detect the symbol rate of unknown received signal. Symbol rate is detected from the power spectral density of the circuits such as the delay and multiplier circuit, the square law circuit, and analytic signal, etc. As a result of discrete Fourier transform of the output signals of these circuits, a lot of spectral lines and some peaks appear in frequency domain and the position of first peak is corresponding to the symbol rate. If a spectral line on the frequency that is not located in symbol rate is larger than the first peak, the symbol rate is erroneously detected. Thus, the ratio between the value of first peak and the highest side spectral line is used for the measure of the performance of symbol rate detector. For the MPSK modulation, the analytic signal method shows better performance than the delay and multiplier and square law circuits when the received signal power is lager than -20dB. It is also noted that the delay and multiplier circuit is not able to detect the symbol rate for the QAM modulation.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of 12-week elastic resistance exercise for the elderly on the magnitude of frequency and variability of ground reaction force signals. To this aim, total 12 elderly women aged in their 70 were participated in this study and asked to do a 12-week elastic resistance exercise program. FFT(fast Fourier Transform) was used to analyze the frequency domain analysis of the ground reaction forces's signals and an accumulative PSD (power spectrum density) normalized by support phase of walking was calculated to reconstruct the certain signals. To estimate the gait stability between the before and after exercise, values of variability were determined in a coefficient of variance. The magnitude of frequency and variability analysis for media-lateral signal revealed significantly less after exercise (p<.05). In contrast, variability of this signal's frequency that have used to evaluate the local stability during walking exhibited significantly greater after exercise(p<.05). In summary, magnitude frequency and variability of media-lateral ground reaction force's signal were significantly changed after a 12-week elastic resistance exercise.

  • The behavior of the concrete slabs-on-grade considering the horizontal resistance at the slab bottom, which exists due to the shear resistance of the foundation and the friction between the slab and the foundation, has been investigated when the slabs-on-grade are subjected to the vertical load. Analytical formulations have been developed to include the effect of the horizontal resistance at the slab bottom, and the solutions have been obtained in the transformed field domain using the Fourier transform. Finite element formulations have also been developed using the plate bending elements and the flat shell elements. The solutions from the analytical and numerical models have been compared and showed very good agreement. The sensitivity of the horizontal resistance to the stresses of the concrete slab has been investigated with various values of the slab thickness, elastic modulus, and vertical stiffness of the foundation. The analysis results show that the horizontal resistance at the plate bottom can significantly affect the stresses of the slab.

  • This paper present the multi-modal user distance estimation system using mono camera and mono microphone basically equipped with a mobile device. In case of a distance estimation method using an image, we is estimated a distance of the user through the skin color region extraction step, a noise removal step, the face and eyes region detection step. On the other hand, in case of a distance estimation method using speech, we calculates the absolute difference between the value of the sample of speech input. The largest peak value of the calculated difference value is selected and samples before and after the peak are specified as the ROI(Region of Interest). The samples specified perform FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) and calculate the magnitude of the frequency domain. Magnitude obtained is compared with the distance model to calculate the likelihood. We is estimated user distance by adding with weights in the sorted value. The result of an experiment using the multi-modal method shows more improved measurement value than that of single modality.

  • This paper presents a new approach to translation and rotation invariant feature extraction for image texture retrieval. For the rotation invariant feature extraction, we invent angular projection along angular frequency in Polar coordinate system. The translation and rotation invariant feature vector for representing texture images is constructed by the averaged magnitude and the standard deviations of the magnitude of the Fourier transform spectrum obtained by the proposed angular projection. In order to easily implement the angular projection, the Radon transform is employed to obtain the Fourier transform spectrum of images in the Polar coordinate system. Then, angular projection is applied to extract the feature vector. We present our experimental results to show the robustness against the image rotation and the discriminatory capability for different texture images using MPEG-7 data set. Our Experiment result shows that the proposed rotation and translation invariant feature vector is effective in retrieval performance for the texture images with homogeneity, isotropy and local directionality.

  • In an effort to the practical realization of phonetic typewriter, we concentrate on the classification of consonants in this paper. Since many of consonants do not show periodic behavior in time domain and thus the validity for Fourier analysis of them are not convincing, vector quantization (VQ) via LBG clustering is first performed to check if the feature vectors of MFCC and LPCC are ever meaningful for consonants. Experimental results of VQ showed that it's not easy to draw a clear-cut conclusion as to the validity of Fourier analysis for consonants. For classification purpose, two kinds of neural networks are employed in our study: self organizing map (SOM) and learning vector quantization (LVQ). Results from SOM revealed that some pairs of phonemes are not resolved. Though LVQ is free from this difficulty inherently, the classification accuracy was found to be low. This suggests that, as long as consonant classification by LVQ is concerned, other types of feature vectors than MFCC should be deployed in parallel. However, the combination of MFCC/LVQ was not found to be inferior to the classification of phonemes by language-moded based approach. In all of our work, LPCC worked worse than MFCC.

  • Application fields of ultrasonic transducers can be divided into two categories, a high ultrasonic resolution required field and a high ultrasonic power required field. This paper is aimed to determine the optimal properties of the matching layers of the transducer for each of the applications. Further, it is aimed to optimize the properties of the matching layers that show satisfactory performances for both of the application fields. Through the direct time domain analysis of the transmission and reflection behavior of the ultrasonic wave, apart from the conventional equivalent circuit analysis, and Fourier transformation of its results, we found the optimum acoustic impedances of the matching layers. The newly determined layers provide much better transducer performance-57% at most-than those obtained with conventional design methods. Based on the results, we also found the optimal acoustic impedances of the layers good for both of the application fields. For te optimization, we developed a new transducer performance evaluation parameter that can be applied to any type of ultrasonic transducers.

  • In this paper, we introduce an adaptive phase-comparison monopulse technique for angle estimation of two targets in the same antenna beam. The proposed method determines a more suitable technique(between conventional phase comparison monopulse technique and Zheng's method) based on interference between two targets in Fourier domain. Consequently, regardless of the interference, angles of each individual target can be accurately estimated by means of the proposed method. In simulations, we assumed that two point targets with same velocity are located in the same antenna beam, and the accuracy improvement of the proposed method is verified by using several simulations.

  • Compressive sensing allows recovering an original signal which has a small dimension of the signal compared to the dimension of the entire signal in a short period of time through a small number of observations. In this paper, we proposed a method for detecting tonal signal which caused by the machinery component of a vessel such as an engine, gearbox, and support elements. The tonal signal can be modeled as the sparse signal in the frequency domain when it compares to whole spectrum range. Thus, the target tonal signal can be estimated by S-OMP (Simultaneous-Orthogonal Matching Pursuit) which is one of the sparse signal recovery algorithms. In simulation section, we showed that S-OMP algorithm estimated more precise frequencies than the conventional FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) thresholding algorithm in low SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) region.

  • The aerial photos need in a simple object such as cartography and ground cover classification and also in a social objects such as the city plan, environment, disaster, transportation etc. However, the shadow, which includes when taking the aerial photos, makes a trouble to interpret the ground information, and also users, who need the photos in their field tasks, have a restriction. Generally the shadow occurs by the building and surface topography, and the detail cause is by changing of the illumination in an area. For removing the shadow this study uses the single image and processes the image without the source of image and taking situation. Also, applying the entropy minimization method it generates the 1-D gray-scale invariant image for creating the shadow edge mask and using the Canny edge detection creates the shadow edge mask, and finally by filtering in Fourier frequency domain creates the intrinsic image which recovers the 3-D color information and removes the shadow.
