  • In this study, comparison works have been performed for single-stage and multi-stage refrigeration cycle using propane as a refrigerant in order to cool down the natural gas stream. A comparative analysis has been performed for a single, two, three and four stage refrigeration cycle using propane as a refrigerant for cooling the natural gas stream. For the simulation, natural gas feedstock properties supplied by KOGAS were utilized and Peng-Robinson equation of state model was used. As the number of compression stages increase, the condenser heat duty is decreased. The refrigeration heat duty for a four-stage refrigeration cycle is decreased by 20.36% compared to that for a single-stage refrigeration cycle. Moreover, the total refrigerant circulation rate for a four-stage refrigeration system is was reduced by 14.53% compared to the single stage refrigeration cycle. The total compression power for a four-stage compression was reduced by 41.61% compared to the single stage compression.

  • The characteristics of the R-22 two-stage compression refrigeration systems were investigated. The apparatus consisted of 0.5HP and 1HP hermetic reciprocating compressors for the high and low stage sides respectively, a condenser, an evaporator, a heat exchanger, four expansion valves, and two intercoolers. The experiments covered a range of refrigerant flow rates from 24 to 84kg/h, and the inlet temperature of cooling water in the condenser and heat source water in the evaporator ranged from 20 to 30$^.\circ}C$The results Showed that the refrigerant flow rate had greater effect on the refrigerating capacities, the compression efficiency and the coefficient of performance of two-stage compression systems than the inlet temperature of heat source water. And all these values were decreased with increasing inlet temperatures of the cooling water. The pressure drops in the evaporator of two-stage compression systems were decreased in proportion to the increase in the inlet temperature of the heat source and cooling water, but it was increased by the refrigerant flow rate.

  • This study aims to propose a simplified mathematical model for calculating vertical air temperature distribution in a four-sided atrium. In the first stage of the mathematical modeling, the computer model combined zonal model and solar radiation model using Monte Carlo method and Ray tracing technique went through a computer simulation with architectural variables applied to a four-sided atrium in summer. In the next stage, Curve Expert, a computer program that gets the most suitable solution ac-cording to the least squares method, is used to analyze the results of the computer simulation and to derive the mathematical model. The accuracy of the mathematical model was evaluated through a comparison of calculation results from a mathematical model and computer simulation. In this validation step using the least square method, the R2 value of the Zones 1, 2 and 3 showed higher than 0.945. Zone 4 has an R2 value of 0.911, lower than the previous three zones. However the relative error was below 0.5%, which is considered very small.

  • A thermoelectric cooler (TEC) is promising as an alternative refrigeration technology for the sake of its inherent advantages; no-moving parts and refrigerant-free in its operation. Due to the compactness, reliability and excellence in temperature stability, TECs have been widely used for small cooling devices. In recent years, thermoelectric devices have been attractive technologies that not only serve the needs of cooling and heating applications but also meet the demand for energy by recycling waste heat. In this research paper, multistage TEC is proposed as a concept of demonstrating the idea of transient cooling technology. The key idea of transient cooling is to harnesses the thermal mass installed at the interfacial level of the stages. By storing heat temporally at the thermal mass, the multistage TEC can readily reach lower temperatures than that by a steady-state operation. The multistage TEC consists of four different sizes of thermoelectric modules and they are operated with an optimized current. Once the cold-part of the uppermost stage is reached at the no-load temperature, the current is successively supplied to the lower stages with a certain time interval; 25, 50 and 75 seconds. The results show the temperatures that can be ultimately reached at the cold-side of the lowermost stage are 197, 182 and 237 K, respectively. It can be concluded that the timing or total amount of the current fed to each thermoelectric module is the key parameter to determine the no-load temperature.

  • A series of experiments since 1963 ha sbeen made on the artificial propagation of Penaeus oriental is for the purpose of improving breeding of the prawn. The results are as follows: 1. Spawning takes place in the evening, and almost completes before 10 o'clock p. m.. Number of spawns deposited by a prawn is 30,000 to 150,000. 2. Deposited spawns become nauplius stage after approximately 18 hours (about 13 hours in hatching tanks) at water temperature of $23\~25^{\circ}C$, and grow to first nauplius stage in subsequent 28 hours. 3. It takes about five days from first nauplius stage to zoea stage, and additional four or five days from first zoea stage to first mysis stage. 4. It takes approximately 2 to 3 weeks from spawning to post larva. 5. Hatching rate ranged from $1.4\%$ to $14.9\%$, with the average of $6\%$ in 1966 and $10\%$ to $35\%$ averaging $20\%$ in 1967.

  • In this paper, a noble method for rapid cooldown of pulse tube refrigerator (PTR) was proposed and experimentally investigated. An orifice pulse tube refrigerator generates refrigeration effect by expansion PV work at the cold-end, and its amount is affected by the orifice valve opening. There exists the optimum valve opening for maximum cooling capacity and it varies as cold-end temperature. It is verified from simulation results using isothermal model that the optimum valve opening increases as the cold-end temperature increases. In the experiments, a single stage orifice pulse tube refrigerator is fabricated and tested. The fabricated PTR shows 97.5 K of no-load temperature and 10 W at 110 K of cooling capacity with the fixed orifice valve opening. From experiments, the initial cooldown curve with four cases of valve opening control scenario are obtained. And it is experimentally verified that the initial cooldown time can be reduced through the control of orifice valve opening.

  • This study was performed to evaluate sleep efficiencies and conditions for comfortable sleep based on the analysis of sleep efficiency and MST under four thermals conditions ($22^{\circ}C,\;24^{\circ}C,\;26^{\circ}C,\;30^{\circ}C$). Five female subjects who have similar life cycle and sleep patterns were participated for the sleep experiment. Their age was from 20 to 22 years old. They were healthy, and had regular sleep with consistent bed and wakeup time. It was checked whether they had a good sleep before the night of experiment. Experiments were performed in an environmental chamber using thermo-hygrostat. The physiological signal (EEG) for sleep stage were obtained from C3-A2 and C4-Al electrode sites. Sleep stages were classified, then SWS latency and SWS/TST were calculated for the evaluation for sleep efficiencies on thermal conditions. As results, mean skin temperature for comfort sleeping was $34.5{\sim}35.4^{\circ}C$. Considering sleep efficiency and mean skin temperature, indoor room temperature of upper limit was $28.1^{\circ}C$.

  • Background : Anthracofibrosis, a descriptive term for multiple black pigmentation with fibrosis on bronchoscopic examination, has a close relationship with active tuberculosis (TB). However, TB activity is determined in the later stage by the TB culture results in some cases of anthracofibrosis. Therefore, it is necessary to identify early markers of TB activity in anthracofibrosis. There have been several reports investigating the serum levels of IL-2 $sR{\alpha}$, IFN-${\gamma}$ and TBGL antibody for the evaluation of TB activity. In the present study, we tried to measure the above mentioned serologic markers for the evaluation of TB activity in patients with anthracofibrosis. Methods : Anthracofibrosis was defined when there was deep pigmentation (in more than two lobar bronchi) and fibrotic stenosis of the bronchi on bronchoscopic examination. The serum of patients with anthracofibrosis was collected and stored under refrigeration before the start of anti-TB medication. The serum of healthy volunteers (N=16), patients with active TB prior to (N=22), and after (N=13), 6 month-medication was also collected and stored. Serum IL-2 $sR{\alpha}$, IFN-${\gamma}$ were measured with ELISA kit (R&D system, USA) and serum TBGL antibody was measured with TBGL EIA kit (Kyowa Inc, Japan). Results : Serum levels of IL-2 $sR{\alpha}$ in healthy volunteers, active TB patients before and after medication, and patients with anthracofibrosis were $640{\pm}174$, $1,611{\pm}2,423$, $953{\pm}562$, and $863{\pm}401$ pg/ml, respectively. The Serum IFN-${\gamma}$ levels were 0, $8.16{\pm}17.34$, $0.70{\pm}2.53$, and $2.33{\pm}6.67$ pg/ml, and TBGL antibody levels were $0.83{\pm}0.80$, $5.91{\pm}6.71$, $6.86{\pm}6.85$, and $3.22{\pm}2.59$ U/ml, respectively. The serum level of TBGL antibody was lower than of other groups (p<0.05). There was no significant difference of serum IL-2 $sR{\alpha}$ and IFN-${\gamma}$ levels among the four groups. Conclusion : The serum levels of IL-2 $sR{\alpha}$, IFN-${\gamma}$ and TBGL antibody were not useful in the evaluation of TB activity in patients with anthracofibrosis. More useful ways need to be developed for the differentiation of active TB in patients with anthracofibrosis.
