FLOW CONTROL ON ELLIPTIC AIRFOILS USING SYNTHETIC JET (합성제트를 이용한 타원형 익형 유동제어)

  • In the present work, the aerodynamic characteristics of elliptic airfoils which have a 12% thickness ratio are numerically investigated based on Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and a transition SST model at a Reynolds number 8.0$\times$105. The numerical simulation of a synthetic jet actuator which is a well-known zero-net-mass active flow control actuator located at x/c = 0.00025, was performed to control massive flow separation around the leading edge of the elliptic airfoils. Four cases of non-dimensional frequencies were simulated at an angle of attack of 12 degree. It is found that the size of the vortex induced by synthetic jets was getting smaller as the jet frequency becomes higher. Comparison of the location of synthetic jets between x/c = 0.00025 (around the leading edge) and x/c = 0.9 (near the separation) shows that the control near the leading edge induces closed recirculation flow regions caused by the interaction of the synthetic jet with the external flow, but the control applied at 0.9c (near the trailing edge) induces a very small and weak vortex which quickly decays due to weak intensity.

  • The aim of this paper is to present a method to obtain the dynamic response of a wind turbine tower in time domain by means of the generation of time series and to estimate the associated fatigue damage by means of a Rainflow counting algorithm. The proposed method is based on assuming the vortex shedding is a bidimensional phenomena and on following a classical modal superposition method to obtain the structure dynamic response. Four different wind turbine tower geometric configurations have been analyzed in a range of usual wind velocities and covering extreme wind velocities. The obtained results have shown that, depending on the turbulence intensity and the mean wind velocity, there are tower geometric configurations more advantageous from the fatigue load standpoint. Consequently, the presented model can be utilized to define assembly strategies oriented to fatigue damage minimization.

  • Mode transition of the axi-symmetric screech tone in the low supersonic Mach number range from 1.0 to 1.20 is numerically analyzed. The axi-symmetric Navier-Stokes equations and the k-e turbulence model are solved in the cylindrical coordinate system. The dispersion-relation-preserving(DRP) scheme is applied for space discretization and the optimized four levels marching method are used for time integration. At low supersonic Mach numbers with an axi-symmetric A1 mode in the simulation, it is shown that acoustic propagation due to the nonlinear effects is seen in the lateral direction and the screech tone frequency is the same as the vortex passing frequency due to the generation of intense large-scale vortical motions.

PIV Velocity Field Analysis of Inflow ahead of a Rotating Marine Propeller (회전하는 선박 프로펠러 전방 유입류에 대한 PIV 속도장 해석)

  • Flow characteristics of the inflow ahead of a rotating propeller attached to a container ship model were investigated using a two-frame PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) technique. Ensemble-averaged mean velocity fields were measured at four different blade phases. The mean velocity fields show the acceleration of inflow due to the rotating propeller and the velocity deficit in the near-wake region. The axial velocity distribution of inflow in the upper plane of propeller is quite different from that in the lower plane due to the thick hull boundary layer. The propeller inflow also shows asymmetric axial velocity distribution in the port and starboard side. As the inflow moves toward the propeller, the effect of phase angle variation of propeller blade on the inflow becomes dominant. In the upper plane above the propeller axis the inflow has very low axial velocity and large turbulent kinetic energy, compared with the lower plane. The boundary layer developed along the bottom surface of stern hull forms a strong shear layer affecting vortex structure of the propeller near-wake.

A Numerical Study on In-cylinder Flow Fields of an Axisymmetric Engine (축대칭 엔진 실린더내의 유동장에 관한 수치적 연구)

  • A numerical prediction was performed to clarify the air motion in the cylinder of an axisymmet-ric four-stroke reciprocating engine at its intake and compression stage. A scheme of finite volume method is used for the calculation. Modified $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is adopted and wall function is applied to the grids near the wall. The predicted mean velocity and rms velocity profiles showed a reasonable agreement with an available experimental data at its intake and compression stage. The predicted in-cylinder flow fields show that a strong turbulent twin vortex structure is pro-duced during induction but it commences to decay rapidly around inlet valve closure. The mean velocity continues to fall to a low level during compression but the turbulence intensity attains an approximate constant level.

The Effects of Typhoon Initialization and Dropwindsonde Data Assimilation on Direct and Indirect Heavy Rainfall Simulation in WRF model

  • A number of heavy rainfall events on the Korean Peninsula are indirectly influenced by tropical cyclones (TCs) when they are located in southeastern China. In this study, a heavy rainfall case in the middle Korean region is selected to examine the influence of typhoon simulation performance on predictability of remote rainfall over Korea as well as direct rainfall over Taiwan. Four different numerical experiments are conducted using Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, toggling on and off two different improvements on typhoon in the model initial condition (IC), which are TC bogussing initialization and dropwindsonde observation data assimilation (DA). The Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory TC initialization algorithm is implemented to generate the bogused vortex instead of the initial typhoon, while the airborne observation obtained from dropwindsonde is applied by WRF Three-dimensional variational data assimilation. Results show that use of both TC initialization and DA improves predictability of TC track as well as rainfall over Korea and Taiwan. Without any of IC improvement usage, the intensity of TC is underestimated during the simulation. Using TC initialization alone improves simulation of direct rainfall but not of indirect rainfall, while using DA alone has a negative impact on the TC track forecast. This study confirms that the well-suited TC simulation over southeastern China improves remote rainfall predictability over Korea as well as TC direct rainfall over Taiwan.

A Numerical Study on the Flow and Heat Transfer Characteristics of Plastic Plate Heat Exchanger (플라스틱 판형 열교환기의 유동 및 열전달 특성에 관한 수치해석적 연구)

  • Four simulation models of plastic plate heat exchangers are designed and simulated. The flat plate type heat exchanger is designed as the reference model in order to evaluate how much thermal performance increases. The turbulence promoter type heat exchanger is fabricated with cylindrical-type vortex generators and rib-type turbulence promoters. The corrugate type is obtained from the conventional stainless steel compact heat exchangers, which are called the herringbone-type compact heat exchangers. The dimple type heat exchanger has a number of dimples on its surface. In this study, the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the plastic plate heat exchanger are investigated using numerical simulation and compared with experimental results. The flows are assumed as a three-dimensional, incompressible and turbulent model. The standard k-$\varepsilon$ model is used as the turbulent flow modeling, the SIMPLE algorithm is used to treat the coupling between pressure and velocity, and first order upwind scheme is used for discretization of momentum, turbulent and energy. The computational analysis and experimental results both show that the friction coefficient and Nu number is highest in the corrugate type.

  • In this study, a scaled model chamber was built to investigate ventilation characteristics of the hood room in LNG carrier. Experimental study was performed in model by visualization equipment with laser apparatus. Four different kinds of measuring area were selected as experimental condition Instant simultaneous velocity vectors at whole field were measured by 2-D PIV system and its software adopting two-frame grey-level cross correlation algorithm. The flow pattern reveals the large scale counter-clockwise forced-vortex rotation at center area.

  • The purpose of this research is to develop high efficiency plastic plate heat exchangers which can be substituted for conventional aluminum plate heat exchangers. Four simulation models of plastic plate heat exchangers are designed and simulated: that is, flat plate type, turbulent promoter type, corrugate type and dimple type heat exchanger. The flat plate type is designed as the reference model in order to evaluate how much thermal performance increases. The turbulent promoter type is fabricated with cylindrical-type vortex generators and rib-type turbulent promoters. Numerical simulation is carried out using the FLUENT code. The flows are assumed as a three-dimensional, incompressible and turbulent model. The computational analysis and experimental results both show that the friction coefficient and Nu number is highest in the corrugate type. The tendency of numerical simulation results is in good agreement with that of the experimental results.

The Effect of Scaling of Owl's Flight Feather on Aerodynamic Noise at Inter-coach Space of High Speed Trains based on Biomimetic Analogy

  • An analysis and design method for reducing aerodynamic noise in high-speed trains based on biomimetics of noiseless flight of owl is proposed. Five factors related to the morphology of the flight feather have been selected, and the candidate optimal shape of the flight feather is determined. The turbulent flow field analysis demonstrates that the optimal shape leads to diminished vortex formation by causing separation of the flow as well as allowing the fluid to climb up along the surface of the flight feather. To determine the effect of scaling of the owl's flight feather on the noise reduction, a two-fold and a four-fold scaled up model of the feather are constructed, and the numerical simulations are carried out to obtain the aerodynamic noise levels for each scale. Original model is found to reduce the noise level by 10 dBA, while two-fold increase in length dimensions reduces the noise by 12 dBA. Validation of numerical solution using wind tunnel experimental measurements is presented as well.
