This experimental study was carried out to investigate the solidification characteristics of polystyrene added styronaphthalene pattern materials using various castability test methods. The styronaphthalene showed an excellent filling capacity and shaping behavior having about 0.2 mm meniscus radius. The shell thickness of styronaphthalene showing smooth wall at the solid/liquid interface increased with the increasing of polystyrene addition. The solidification microstructure of styronaphthalene showed a typical thin ribbon reinforced composite structure, which has fibrous amorphous skeleton of polystyrene and crystalline naphthalene. From the results of this study, it was found that the polystyrene added styronaphthalene showed a precision shaping behavior as disposable pattern material under the atmospheric condition.
This study presents the wear characteristics of Ti alloys (Pure Ti, Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-5Al-2.5Sn) fabricated by centrifugal precision casting in an Ohara dental titanium casting machine. It was found that the hardness of the surface region is higher than that of the interior region. It is considered that the oxygen adsorption in the surface region during casting, leads to the interstitial solid solution hardening. Wear resistance incerases in the order of pure Ti, Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-5Al-2.5Sn alloys. The interior hardness value increases in the same order. The specific wear rate increases with applied load and increases monotonously with sliding speed. The Fe transfer from the counterpart material was observed on the worn surface of the Ti-5Al-2.5Sn alloy. Oxidative wear occurs at low sliding speeds and mechanical fracture wear occurs at high sliding speeds.
Compressive properties of the open cell 6063 aluminum alloy foams made by the plaster molding process were investigated before and after heat treatment. Loading process was controlled at a displacement rate of 2 mm/min. Compressive strength of 10 PPI foam was the largest of the same density foams. Increase in strength after heat treatment for the bulk material was remark able, however was not for the 6063 aluminum foam. C values were in the range of $0.39{\sim}0.53$ for as cast foams and $0.13{\sim}0.16$ for T6 heat treated foams in the equation of ${sigma}^*_{pl}/{\sigma}_{ys}=C({\rho}/{\rho}_{s})^{1.5}$ and increased with cell size.
The relatively low conductivity of conventional Mg-Al alloys often limits their areas of application. Therefore, several attempts to develop new high-conductivity magnesium alloys have been made recently. In this research, A Ce-rich rare-earth (RE)material and zinc were added to magnesium which contained no aluminum. As the RE and Zn content were increased, both the hardness and tensile strength were gradually increased, despite the fact that the electrical conductivity decreased slightly. The effects of an aging treatment on the conductivity and mechanical properties of Mg-RE-Zn alloys were also investigated. The electrical conductivity did not change according to the heat treatment conditions; however, the mechanical properties could be enhanced by proper aging heat treatments.
This study investigated the microstructure properties of A356 and AC8A alloys with a rheocasting mold using an inclined cooling plate. In addition, a formability evaluation was performed according to the solid fraction. Regardless of the position, the overall microstructure was shown to be uniform and a finer crystal structure was obtained as the solid fraction increased. The study confirmed that the molding pattern changed according to the solid fraction and that the spherical α-Al and eutectic α were identified. The results of the formability according to the solid fraction of A356 and AC8A alloys were similar to the simulation results.
The outcomes of solution annealing and stress corrosion cracking in cold-worked 316L austenitic stainless steel have been studied using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and the slow strain rate test (SSRT) technique. The good compatibility with a high-temperature water environment allows 316L austenitic stainless steel to be widely adopted as an internal structural material in light water reactors. However, stress corrosion cracking (SCC) has recently been highlighted in the stainless steels used in commercial pressurized water reactor (PWR) plants. In this paper, SCC and inter granular cracking (IGC) are discussed on the basis of solution annealing in a chloride environment. It was found that the martensitic contents of cold-worked 316L stainless steel decreased as the solution annealing time was increased at a high temperature. Moreover, mode of SCC was closely related to use of a chloride environment. The results here provide evidence of the vital role of a chloride environment during the SCC of cold-worked 316L.
The aim of this study was to optimize a solid solution treatment for a high pressure die casting Al-10Si-0.3Mg-0.6Mn alloy to avoid blistering and to improve the strength of the alloy. To achieve this goal, the number density of the blisters and the strength of the alloy under various solid solution treatment (SST) conditions were evaluated. The SST was performed at 470, 490, 510 and 530℃ for 20, 60, 120, 240 and 480 min on the alloy. The number density of the blisters increased with the increasing temperature and time of the SST and the defect area fraction. The yield strength of the alloy after the T6 heat treatment increased with the increasing SST temperature and time. Based on the results, it is suggested that SST should be performed at 510℃ within 60 min. or at 470 and 490℃ within 240 min. to avoid blistering and to improve the strength.
The Al die casting process has been widely used in the manufacturing of automotive parts when the process requires near-net shape casting and a high productive rate. However, porosity arises in the casting process, and this hampers the wider use of this method for the creation of high-durability automotive components. The porosity can be controlled by the shot condition, but, it is critical to set the shot condition in the sleeve, and it remains difficult to optimize the shot condition to avoid air entrapment efficiently. In this study, the 4.5 mm, 2.0 mm plate die castings were fabricated under various shot conditions, such as plunger velocities of 0.7 m/s ~ 3.0 m/s and fast shot set points of the cavity of -25%, 0%, 25%, and 50%. The mold filling behavior of Al melts in the cavity was analyzed by a numerical method. Also, according to the shot conditions, the results of numerical analyses were compared to those of die-casting experiments. The porosity levels of the plate castings were analyzed by X-ray CT images and by density and microstructural analyses. The effects of the porosity on the mechanical properties were analyzed by tensile tests and hardness tests. The simulation results are in good general agreements with the die-casting experimental results. When plunger velocity and fast shot set point are 1.0 m/s and cavity 25% position, castings had optimum condition for good mechanical properties and a low level of porosity.
A noble technique has been developed for fabricating in situ formed $TiC_p/Al$ composites. In this process, fairly stable TiC particles were in situ synthesized in liquid aluminum by the interfacial reaction between an Al-Ti melt and SiC, which is a comparatively unstable carbide from the view-point of thermodynamics. It is possible in the present process to generate TiC particles of nearly 1 ${\mu}m$ in diameter, even utilizing SiC of 14 ${\mu}m$ as raw material. However, the dispersion behavior of TiC particles in the matrix depends on the size of the raw material SiC. Decomposing finer SiC makes the dispersion of TiC particles more uniform and the mechanical properties of composites are improved accordingly. The structure of in situ composites and their mechanical properties are affected by the fabrication temperature and the stirring time. It has been found that the most suitable condition for fabrication should be applied depending on the size of the raw material, even if the same kinds of carbide are used. Furthermore, although Al-Ti-Si system intermetallic compounds are detected in a $TiC_p/Al-Si$ composite which is fabricated by conventional melt-stirrng method, these compounds can not be observed in a $TiC_p/Al-Si$ composite made by this in situ production method. Hence the mechanical properties of the in situ $TiC_p/Al-Si$ composite are superior to those of the conventional $TiC_p/Al-Si$ composites.
The measurement of the apparent and tap density for Al-Pb-X(Sn,Sn-Si) powders produced by centrifugal atomizer showed that the larger theoretically calculated densities the larger those densities. And tap densities were not over 50% of the theoretical densities. The nip angle of Al-5wt%Pb alloy powders produced with 38000 r.p.m. of disk rotation was $3^{\circ}$ degree larger than that of Al-8.5wt%Pb-3wt%Sn(-4wt%Si, 8wt%Si) with 50000 r.p.m. The effects of roll gap and rolling speed on thickness and density of the single strips by rolling were that rolling speed increasing the thickness and density of strip decreased and roll gap increasing, the thickness of strip increased but the density decresed. The compactibility of Al-Pb-X with Al by rerolling showed that the coarse powder-strips were better than fine powder-strips. From the SEM study with EDX analysis on the sintered strips, it was found that Pb and Sn were segregated with maximum size $5{\mu}m$, and Si existed surrounding the segregation zone. After sintering the clad strips at $500^{\circ}C$, the pores, which were spherical with $5{\mu}m$ of mean diameter, partly remained around the particles of alloy powders area, while completely disappeared at clad interface. The hardness of strips of alloy powders decreased linearly with increasing sintering temperature.
