  • Load sharing in distributed systems improves systems performance. Research in the field has been focused on steady state performance for load sharing algorithms. However, transient characteristics of such algorithms may be important in a distributed system in which workload for some node is changing. Simulation is the only means to analyze such characteristics. This paper presents a simulation-based analysis of the transient characteristics of four load sharing algorithms ; forward probing, reverse probing, symmetric probing, and multi-threshold symmetric probing algorithms. Discrete event system models for execution of the algorithms in a distributed system has been developed in a SIMSCRIOT II.5 environment. Simulation results indicate that the MSYM algorithm shows the shortest response time in the transient period.

  • This paper is related with the compensation of communication channel characteristics using predistorter, and the considered characteristic is the additive noise, phase rotation and frequency selective fading which occurred in communication channel. Predistorter can minimize the effect of obstacle element which occured in channel at receiving side by transmitting the predistortion of signal after modulation, the coefficient of inverse electrical charateristic of communication channel is performed at transmitting side. For this purpose, the predistorter is designed by using Tricepstrum Equalization Algorithm which is adaptive equlizer algorithm, and the receiving side must transmit the probing signal to transmitting side. Using the probing signal, the transmitting side can obtain the inverse characteristic coefficient of communication channel, and this probing signal must be transmitted periodically. We assumed that the channel characteristic do not change during this one period. As a result of computer simulation, we confirmed that the performance of predistorter was fairly good as same as the adaptive equalizer, and this technique have a effectiveness that can be used in the forward channel of mobile communication in order to achieve high speed transmission.

  • It is essential to predict ground conditions ahead of a tunnel face in order to successfully excavate tunnels using a shield TBM. This study proposes a forward prediction method for a mixed soil ground and/or a ground containing core stones by using electrical resistivity and induced polarization exploration. Soil conditioning in EPB shield TBM is dependent upon the composition of mixed soils; a special care need to be taken when excavating the core-stoned soil ground using TBM. The resistivity and chargeability are assumed to be measured with four electrodes at the tunnel face, whenever the excavation is stopped to assemble one ring of a segment lining. Firstly, the mixed ground consisting of weathered granite soil, sand, and clay was modeled in laboratory-scale experiments. Experimental results show that the measured electrical resistivity considerably coincides with the analytical solution. On the other hand, the induced polarization has either same or opposite trend with the measured resistivity depending on the mixed ground conditions. Based on these experimental results, a method to predict the mixed soil ground that can be used during TBM tunnel driving is suggested. Secondly, tunnel excavation from a homogeneous ground to a ground containing core stones was modeled in laboratory scale; the irregularity of the core stones contained in the soil layer was modeled through random number generation scheme. Experimental results show that as the TBM approaches the ground that contains core stones, the electrical resistivity increases and the induced polarization fluctuates.

  • We have investigated the photoinduced birefrinence by the electric field effects in chalcogenide thin films. The electric field effects have investigated the various applied bias voltages(forward and reverse) in chalcogenide thin films. A pumping (inducing) and a probing bean were using a linearly polarized He-Ne laser light (633nm) and semiconductor laser light (780nm), respectively. The result was shown that the birefringence had a higher value in DC +2V than the others, Also, we obtained the birefringence in the electric field effects by various voltages. In addition, we have discussed the anisotropy property of chalcogenide thin films by the electric field effects.

  • This paper suggests a methodology fur improving the machining accuracy by compensating for the machining errors based on on-machine measurement process. Probing errors and machine tool errors included in the measurement data were calibrated or compensated to obtain the actual machining errors. Machine tool errors were modeled in forward and backward directions according to the axis movement direction to consider the effects of backlash errors on the measurement data, and model parameters were determined by measuring a cube array artifact. A rectangular workpiece was machined and then measured with a touch probe as a verification experiment. Machining experiments showed that the machining errors were reduced to within the designated tolerance after compensating for the actual machining errors by modifying the original footpath for the next-step machining.

  • A method that can predict the mixed-ground condition ahead of a TBM tunnel face during tunnel construction utilizing electrical resistivity and induced polarization (IP) was proposed in this study. Effect of TBM advancement approaching the mixed-ground condition (composed of soil layer overlying rock layer) when currently running through soil zone on the electrical resistivity and IP measuring was assessed with laboratory-scale experiments. The resistivity and IP values were measured using four electrodes, by installing two electrodes on the tunnel face (at the cutterhead), and the other two electrodes on the segment lining. The test results showed that both of the measured resistivity and IP values were kept increasing as the TBM is approaching the soil-rock mixed-ground. Also, to get the more reliable results for predicting the mixed-ground condition, it was recommended that the measurement is made at the tunnel face utilizing 4-electrodes installed at the cutterhead as well as it is made utilizing the 2-electrodes installed at the segment lining along with the 2-electrodes installed on the tunnel face (at the cutterhead) so that two measured results are compared each other.
