Effect of Several Native Moss Plants on Particulate Matter, Volatile Organic Compounds and Air Composition

  • Experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of mosses on the removal of particulate matter (PM 10) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in an indoor space and on the composition of air. For particulate matter removal experiments, 0.2 g mosquitto coil was burned in a glass chamber, where three kinds of mosses (Plagiomnium cuspidatum, Myuroclada maximowiczii, Etodon luridus) were placed. For VOCs removal experiments, 1 mL paint thinner was volatilized in a glass chamber, where Plagiomnium cuspidatum and Myuroclada maximowiczii were used. As a result, it was found that particulate matter was effectively removed by the three mosses, and the removal efficiency of particulate matter increased as the amount of mosses increased. The amount of VOCs was similar to the level in the control when a low amount of mosses (2 and 4 plates) was used. However, the removal efficiency of VOCs was significant when 6 plates of mosses were used. On the other hand, formaldehyde concentration was 40 times more than the control and carbon monoxide 30 times, when 0.2 g of mosquito repellent was completely burned in a glass chamber. Also formaldehyde removal effect was significant when 6 plates of mosses were placed. However, there was no change in the concentration of indoor oxygen, temperature and humidity by moss plants. In conclusion, the moss plants were effective in removing particulate matter and VOCs, and they are expected to be used for indoor decoration and landscape in order to improve indoor air quality in the future.

  • 최근 실내공기질에 대한 관심이 집중되고 있는 가운데 이를 개선하고자 하는 노력이 다각도로 진행되고 있다. 본 연구는 기존의 친환경 마감재 적용 기술과 달리 콘크리트 자체에 활성탄과 흡착된 오염 공기를 분해할 수 있도록 기능성 촉매를 혼입함으로써 기본적인 물성과 포름알데히드 제거율을 시험하여 공기정화 효과를 분석하고자 하였다. 실험 결과 활성탄의 첨가량 증가에 따라 슬럼프는 감소하는 경향을 나타내었고, 압축강도는 큰 차이 없이 유사한 것으로 나타났다. 공기질 개선과 관련하여 포름알데히드 제거율을 시험한 결과 최대 80%까지 제거하는 것으로 나타났다.

Efficiency of Removal of Indoor Pollutants by Pistia stratiotes, Eichhornia crassipes and Hydrocotyle umbellata

  • In this study, we compared efficiency of different aquatic plants in removing indoor pollutants and examined their potential to purify indoor air. Two liter of water in chamber was used as the control, while the other chambers containing water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes), water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), and water coin (Hydrocotyle umbellata) were used as treatment groups. Temperatures inside all the chambers were maintained between 20 ℃ and 23 ℃. Humidity in the chambers with aquatic plants increased by 30% and 50% control respectively. The removal of formaldehyde per unit leaf area was examined in each aquatic plant. It turned out that water hyacinth removed the highest amount of formaldehyde, followed by water lettuce and water coin. Both water hyacinth and water lettuce increased the amount of removal of formaldehyde until the end of the experiment. In the case of airborne dust (PM 10) and fine dust (PM 2.5), water coin, which had the highest number of leaves, removed more PM 10 and PM 2.5 than the other aquatic plants, with statistically significant difference. In addition, both water coin and water hyacinth smoothly opened and closed stomata before and after the experiment. Consequently, as the aquatic plants were effective in controlling humidity and removing pollutants, they can be used as air purifying plants.

포름알데히드로 오염된 실내공기의 정화에 미치는 식물효과에 관한 연구 (A Study on Plant Effects on Decontamination of Polluted Indoor Air with Formaldehyde)

  • This study was designed to investigate the effect of plant as a botanical air purification on the indoor pollution by formaldehyde. Three indoor plants such as Dracaena marhginata, Spathiphyllum and Dracaena reflexa, were placed in the artificially contaminated reactor under laboratory condition. Both plant and soil effects on removal of formaldehyde from contaminated indoor air were observed. Reductions in the formaldehyde levels appeared to have been associated with soil medium factors as well as plant factors. The effect of soil on formaldehyde reduction was high in the early stage of the experiment and the results suggest that sorption could be more important factor than microbial degradation in the initial dissipation of contaminants in the soil. It was suggested that the effect of plant on formaldehyde reduction might be related to the plant species, total leaf surface area of plant, degree of contribution of soil medium, and exposed concentration level. The results of this study showed that air purification using plants is an effective means of reduction on indoor formaldehyde level, though, utilization of soil media with high sorption capacity and/or supplementary purifying aids were also suggested when the source is continuous or exposed concentration level is high.

  • This study was intended to clarify (1) the release of free formaldehyde (2) transfer of free formaldehyde to the contacted fabrics during storing, and (3) the removal effect of free formaldehyde by washing from resin finished fabrics. The results of this study were as follow; 1. The decrease rate of free formaldehyde content in fabrics was higher during storing in open air, poly bag, and glass tube in descending order and the content of free formaldehyde in fabrics was decreased in glyoxal resin finished but, increased in Melamine M-3 resin finished when the fabrics was stored in polybag and in glass tube. 2. Increased amount of formaldehyde transfer to contacted fabrics was noted with Melamine M-3 resin finished than that of glyoxal resin finished. Increased amount of formaldehyde transfer as well as more free formaldehyde were noted in cotton fabrics than in polyester/ cotton blend. 3. The effect of removing free formaldehyde from the fabrics was better in case of solid alkaline soap, synthetic alkaline powdered detergents, neutral detergents in descending order. The romoval of free formaldehyde was marked after the 1st washing and almost no increase in free formaldehyde was found after three times of washing. 4. After first washing, the content of formaldehyde in Melamine M-3 resin finished fabrics increased more rapidly than that of glyoxal resin finished fabrics in condition of closed storing.

미이용 바이오매스의 이산화탄소 활성화를 통한 바이오카본 생산: 포름알데하이드 및 아세트알데하이드 제거 특성 (Production of Bio-Carbon from Unused Biomass through CO2 Activation: Removal Characteristics of Formaldehyde and Acetaldehyde)

  • 본 연구에서는 미이용 바이오매스인 3급 목재펠렛 및 커피박을 이용하여 바이오카본을 생산하고 이를 통하여 저분자 극성 휘발성 유기화합물인 포름알데하이드 및 아세트알데하이드 제거 성능 실험을 수행하였다. 바이오카본 생산 실험은 이산화탄소를 활성화제로 사용하여 고정층 반응기에서 수행하였다. 활성화 실험 시 반응온도 900 ℃ 및 이산화탄소 1 L min-1으로 반응조건을 고정하여 진행하였다. 활성화 실험 결과 1급 목재펠렛으로부터 생산한 바이오카본의 BET 비표면적이 약 788 m2 g-1으로 가장 높음을 알 수 있었고 커피박으로부터 생산한 바이오카본이 약 544 m2 g-1으로 가장 낮게 나타났다. 본 실험을 통해 생산된 바이오카본은 대부분 마이크로 기공을 가진 것으로 나타났다. 바이오매스 원료 내 회분의 함량이 낮을수록 바이오카본의 비표면적이 높아지는 것으로 나타났다. 포름알데하이드 및 아세트알데하이드 제거 실험 결과 1급 및 3급 목재펠렛으로 부터 생산한 바이오카본에 비해 커피박으로부터 생산한 바이오카본이 더욱 우수한 흡착 성능을 보여주었다. 추가적으로 상용 첨착 활성탄과 커피박으로부터 생산한 바이오카본의 비교 실험을 진행하였다. 포름알데하이드 제거 성능은 상용 첨착 활성탄이 우수한 반면 아세트알데하이드 제거에는 커피박으로부터 생산한 바이오카본이 우수한 것으로 나타났다.

Phenolic Wastewater Treatment by a Mixed Culture GE2 Immobilized on Activated Carbon

  • The biological treatment by a mixed culture GE2 immobilized on activated carbon was investigated with a phenolic resin industrial wastewater containing 41,000 mg/l of phenol and 2,800 mg/l of formaldehyde. At a dilution of 20 times with aerated tap water, influent and effluent $COD_{Mn}$ were 4,587 mg/l and 46 mg/l, that is, $COD_{Mn}$ removal efficiency was 99.0%. At this time, phenol and formaldehyde con-centration of the effluent were 1.24 and 6.80 mg/l, indicating removal efficiencies of 99.9 and 94.1%, respectively.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of aldehyde compounds and ploysulfide as accelerating agents on removal of heavy metals and CN in plating wastewater. As a results of the experiments, the removal efficiency of cyanide using the formaldehyde type of aldehydes was the highest at pH 9. Next types were sodium formaldehyde bisulfite addut> paraldehyde> paraformaldehyde. Also, optimum pH and dosage for treating the residual heavy metals by using polysulfide were pH 9 and 30 mg/L, respectively. The removal efficiencies of cyanide, chromium, zinc and copper were above 96.7% at optimum condition.

In research since 2006, Removal of formaldehyde were analyzed for the study. the passengers on the effects of formaldehyde in rush hour, the plan for increasing the ventilation through the analysis of various factors, such as electric vehicle practical ways to improve air quality have been studied.

국내 시판용 목탄의 흡착 특성(I) (Adsorption Characteristics of Commercial Wood Charcoal in Korea (I))

  • 본 연구에서는 국내에서 생산 유통되고 있는 시판용 목탄(전통숯, 기계숯)의 기본물성과 흡착특성을 알아보기 위해 탄화물의 공업분석, 세공분석, 메틸렌블루 흡착량, 포름알데히드 제거율, 에틸렌가스 제거율 등을 분석하였다. 고정탄소는 전통숯의 흑탄이 51.8~76.6%, 백탄이 72.9~84.6%, 기계숯이 48.5~80.3%로 백탄이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 정련도는 흑탄의 경우 대부분 9였고, 백탄과 기계숯은 0으로 나타났다. 비표면적은 흑탄이 0.1~13.7 $m^2/g$, 백탄이 53.2~372.6 $m^2/g$, 기계숯이 224.3~464.6 $m^2/g$로 흑탄이 가장 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 메틸렌블루 흡착량은 흑탄이 0.53~1.97 mg/g, 백탄이 2.68~7.68 mg/g, 기계숯이 11.63~26.10 mg/g 범위로 흑탄이 아주 낮은 경향을 나타냈다. 포름알데히드 제거율은 흑탄이 11.4~26.7%, 백탄이 17.9~34.9%, 기계숯이 5.5~25.8% 범위로, 큰 차이를 나타내지 않았다. 에틸렌가스 제거율은 흑탄이 2.2~43.5%, 백탄이 21.7~39.1%, 기계숯이 21.7~39.1% 범위로, 큰 차이를 나타내지 않았다.
