  • The wave-pattern analysis has been one of important research tools in the towing tank, and applied for hull form design. The longitudinal-cut method of Newman and Sharma is adopted in KRIS deep towing tank. Instrumentations and data acquisition systems are developed for that. Local effects and truncation effects are estimated by using calculated wave patterns of simple source distributions. Wigley model of 2m is used to check the accuracy of the whole system. Cut positions and truncation points are changed to investigate characteristics of the wave-pattern analysis. Coefficients of wave-pattern resistance are low-estimated in comparison with those of Maruo and Ikehata. The general quality of the system is very good, but some more efforts to increase the accuracy are required. Two full-form models(one basic form, the other with bulbous bow) are tested to show high application-possibilities of the wave-pattern analysis for the hull form design.

  • The genus Dendronephthya, generally known as soft corals, is reported as an abundant and variable taxon. They mostly distribute in warmer waters of the Undo-Pacific Ocean region including Korea. In spite of their abundance and ecological importance as habitats of marine organisms, there are difficulties in the study of their identification and systematics because they have morphological variabilities and limited taxonomec characters. To resolve the problems, we attempted to elucidate the genetic relationships in the genus Dendronephthya by using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. This study was based on eight dendronephthian species and one Alcyoniidae species, Alcyonium gracillimum, as an outgroup. The results from all analysis suggest that they could be classified into four groups by the growth form and the anthocodial grades as follows: the first one,D. putteri and D. suensoni with the divaricate form and VI grade; the second one,D. sp.1 and D. sp.2 with the divaricate form and III or IV grade; the third one, D. gigantea and D. aurea being closer than D. spinifera with the glomerate form and III grade; the last one, D. castanea related to D. gigantea rather than D. putteri with the umbellate form and IV grade. Moreover, the divaricate form was separated from the group of the glomerate and umbellate form. At the intraspecies level, the types of the D. castanea, D. gigantea and D. spinifera were separated depending on the feature of spicules in the polyp head, and the coloration could not influence genetic variation. From this study, we can confirm that their morphological characters are compatible with the genetic variation, also RAPD analysis is a very useful method for resolving the systematic relationships of den-deonephthians.

  • Static Single Assignment (SSA) form is an intermediate representation which encodes information about data and control flow that is use used to facilitate program analysis and optimization. SSA form simplifies this process with its size linear to program size. Thus we use SSA form to efficiently facilitate bytecode level analysis and optimizations in our CTOC program processor project. In this paper, we illustrate the application and implement implementation of SSA form using an example. We give the conclusion after experimental results.

  • For the structural analysis of optimum form decision of 3-D free fort structure such as ship, plane, automobile, definition of versatile forms and comparision between them satisfying the design criterion, is essential. In this paper, three dimensional free-form structure and it's variation are defined and attempts were made to obtain geometric form information for structural analysis. The validity of the method ks been tested for a particular free-form model selected.

  • The aim of this study is to understand the meaning of Form drawing in which Louis 1. Kahn's principal thought is immanent through the detail analysis on design process of the Phillips Exeter Academy Library, based on his sketches and writings. The basic form is composed of three different space: one where students come together in the presence of books, another for the storage of books, and a third for reading in the light. Through the design process in the Exeter library, the basic form is maintained and it is derived from the consideration of the human activities in the library Particularly, the basic form is shaped around the idea that learning necessarily Involved two complementary activities: on the one hand, the quiet introspective act of reading, and the other, the interpersonal exchange of ideas. And the basic form plays an important role in controlling the relationship between program requirements and formal transformations in the design.

  • In an effort to reduce the evaluation time of the precision of manufactured disk cams, an effective measuring method with an exclusively built profile-measuring machine and subsequent data analysis procedure is proposed. The design and measuring data are interpolated by cubic spline curves to compute the precision error which is defined by the maximum and minimum distances between two curves. The minimum zone criterion of ISO is employed to evaluate the form error, and genetic algorithm is used to search the orientation and location of design data for the measured data which minimizes the form error. The proposed system was applied to marine engine cams, and it shows that the form error is reduced to 30% down compared with the method which minimizes the form error with the assumption that the centers of measured data design cam curve are identical.

  • This study describes structural reliability analysis of actively-controlled structure for which random vibration analysis is incorporated into the first-order reliability method (FORM) framework. The existing approaches perform the reliability analysis based on the RMS response, whereas the proposed study uses the peak response for the reliability analysis. Therefore, the proposed approach provides us a meaningful performance measure of the active control system, i.e., realistic failure probability. In addition, it can deal with the uncertainties in the system parameters as well as the excitations in single-loop reliability analysis, whereas the conventional random vibration analysis requires double-loop reliability analysis; one is for the system parameters and the other is for stochastic excitations. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated through a numerical example where the proposed approach shows fast and accurate reliability (or inversely failure probability) assessment results of the dynamical active control system against random seismic excitations in the presence of parametric uncertainties of the dynamical structural system.

  • Computational cost is one of the major obstacles for detailed risk analysis of structures. This paper puts forward a methodology for efficient probabilistic seismic loss assessment of structures using the Endurance Time (ET) analysis and the first-order reliability method (FORM). The ET analysis efficiently yields the structural responses for a continuous range of intensities through a single response-history analysis. Taking advantage of this property of ET, FORM is employed to estimate the annual rate of exceedance for the loss components. The proposed approach is an amalgamation of two analysis approaches, ET and FORM, that significantly lower the computational costs. This makes it possible to evaluate the seismic risk of complex systems. The probability distribution of losses due to the structural and non-structural damage as well as injuries and fatalities of a prototype structure are estimated using the proposed methodology. This methodology is an alternative to the prevalent risk analysis framework of the total probability theorem. Hence, the risk estimates of the proposed approach are compared with those from the total probability theorem as a benchmark. The results indicate a satisfactory agreement between the two methods while a significantly lower computational demand for the proposed approach.

  • Glibenclamide is a second generation sulfonylurea that is orally active as a hypoglycemic drug. It exists as a crystalline powder which is sparingly soluble in water. It was investigated that the potential of glibenclamide to exhibit polymorphism. Three polymorphic modifications (form 1, form 2 and form 3) and three pseudopolymorphic modifications (form 4, form 5 and form 6) were obtained by crystallization from different organic solvents. The isolated crystal forms were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) and X-ray crystallography powder diffraction studies. Form 1 was the most stable and melt at $175.4^{\circ}C$. Form 2 was metastable and melt at $151.0^{\circ}C$. Form 3 was a new polymorphic modification because it was different from form 1 and form 2 in X-ray crystallography powder diffraction data. Form 4 was a 1 : 7(toluene : glibenclamide) toluene solvate; form 5 was a 1 : 5(toluene : glibenclamide) toluene solvate; form 6 was a 3 : 8(pentanol : glibenclamide) pentanol solvate. All forms were stable in 3-month storage under 0% or 100% humidity condition. The dissolution rate of form 4 was highest; those of form 2, form 3, form 1, form 5 and form 6 followed.
