  • At 21st century, material development concepts were changed to fulfill the environmental friendly demands. This study is to study the effect of pressurized nitrogen gas and manganese in high nitrogen austenitic stainless steel(HNS) in which N and Mn elements substitute the nickel element. 100kg HNS ingots were made by Pressurized Vacuum Induction Melting(P-VIM) and were forged according to free forging process. As forged HNS were hot and cold rolled by pilot scale rolling machine. Depending on the rolling condition, the mechanical properties of HNS were changed. The roll thrust and sheet folding showed asymmetry condition between work and drive side during cold and hot rolling. The purpose of this study are to improve workability the hot and cold rolling machine and to set the conditions for establishing the rolling process.

  • A rotating disk is introduced to be applied to the deep drawing press. Several characteristics are summarized to see the basics of deep drawing of sheet metal in terms of load-stroke relationship and formability. Many conventional drawing presses, which are mostly link-type presses, are also shown to be compared with the rotating disk-type press. Performances of the new press are kinematically analyzed it terms of load-main gear angle relationship, stroke-gear angle relationship, and slide velocity-gear angle relationship and they are compared with those of conventional types', e. g. crank press and so on. The comparison show kinematically better performance of rotating disk-type press than that of conventional ones. Also, the new press are proven to be one of the best press for mass production in terms of cycle time. Applicability of the rotating disk press to deep drawing and cold forging work is introduced. The new press is described in terms of economy such that the cost of new press would be much lower than those of conventional types'.

  • The nickel-based alloy Nimonic 80A possesses strength, and corrosion, creep and oxidation resistance at high temperature. These products are used for aerospace, marine engineering and power generation, etc. The control of forging parameters such as strain, strain rate, temperature and holding time is important because the microstructure change in hot working affects the mechanical properties. It is necessary to understand the microstructure variation evolution. The microstructure change evolution occurs by recovery, recrystallization and grain growth phenomena. The dynamic recrystallization evolution has been studied in the temperature range $950-1250^{\circ}C$ and strain rate range $0.05-5s^{-1}$ using hot compression tests. The metadynamic recrystallization and grain growth evolution has been studied in the temperature range $950-1250^{\circ}C$ and strain rate range 0.05, $5s^{-1}$, holding time range 5, 10, 100, 600 sec using hot compression tests. Modeling equations are developed to represent the flow curve, recrystallized grain size, recrystallized fraction and grain growth phenomena by various tests. Parameters of modeling equation are expressed as a function of the Zener-Hollomon parameter. The modeling equation for grain growth is expressed as a function of initial grain size and holding time.

  • The temperature difference between die and workpiece has been frequently caused to various surface defects. The distribution and change fur the temperature of forged part should be analyzed to prevent the generation of various defects related with the temperature. The surface temperature changes were affected with the interface heat transfer coefficient. Therefore, the coefficient is necessary to predict the temperature changes of die and workpiece. In this study, the experimental and FE analysis were performed to evaluate the coefficient with a function of pressure, temperature, material, and etc. The sealed die upsetting was used to measure the coefficient on pressure over the flow stress. AISI1045, Al6XXX, and Pure-Cupper were used to analyze effects according to the material. The coefficient was increased with step-up of pressure between die and workpiece. And, Al6XXX was larger than the AISI1045 and Pure-Cupper up to the five times.

  • The caster roll shells have the good thermal conductivity and the low thermal expansion and have to exhibit high enough strength and good ductility at temperature up to $600^{\circ}C$. Thermal stress in particular is very high due to the contact with the liquid aluminium. The main stresses are of thermal origin, which bring a plastic fatigue on surface. This paper will represent one survey about the investigation of the failure of roll shells for continuous casters and an analysis using the simulation of the temperature distribution and the state of stress during hot rolling. Moreover, there will be a discussion on the roll shell of Mod. HAR 5 which is developed by heat treatment process. Mod. HAR 5 has advantages of high strength, high toughness and increased thermal stress resistance while maintaining the same productivity as the conventional roll.

  • Contemporary objectives for steel rod rolling processing are increasingly complex and often contrasting i.e. obtaining a desired product with optimum combination of properties such as strength, toughness and formability at lower cost. Low-alloy steel rods have been produced with several heat treatments for drawing and forging processes at room temperature. In order to reduce these heat treatments much of the researches concerning of high temperature mechanical behavior of steel rods have been conducted at wire rod mill of POSCO. In this present work, optimizations of rolling temperature and cooling rate for JS-SCM435 are performed to eliminate softening heat treatment(Low Temperature Annealing) for drawing process. The results from the optimization changed the microstructure of rods after rod rolling from Bainite with high tensile strength of 1000Mpa to Pearlite and Ferrite with appropriate strength of 750Mpa that is equivalent tensile strength after softening heat treatment.

  • The study has been performed for the relation between die and product in closed die upsetting by the experiment. the strain of die has been given by the simple experiment using the strain gauge located at the outer surface of die and the deformation history of die and product has been given by the experiment and Lame's formula. the product with accurate dimension and shape can be obtained by analysing elastic deformation of die during upsetting process. The deformation of die during metal forming process has been given by the experiment and lame's formula. The product with accurate dimension and shape can be obtained by analysing elastic deformation of die during upsetting process. The deformation of die during metal forming process has been usually predicted by the experience of industrial engineers of finite element analysis. But it is difficult to predict the dimension of product at unloading and ejected states. The study has given useful result for the deformation history of die and product through the experiment and Lame's formula at closed die upsetting and can be applied in the die design for product with accurate dimension.

  • A mesh generation algorithm adapted to the mesh density map using the Delaunay mesh generation technique is developed. In the finite element analyses of the forging processes, the numerical error increases as the process goes on because of discrete property of the finite elements or severe distortion of elements. Especially, in the region where stresses and strains are concentrated, the numerical discretization error will be highly increased. However, it is too time consuming to use a uniformly fine mesh in the whole domain to reduce the expected numerical error. Therefore, it is necessary to construct locally refined mesh at the region where the error is concentrated such as at the die corner. In this study, the point insertion algorithm is used and the mesh size is controlled by moving nodes to optimized positions according to a mesh density map constructed with a posteriori error estimation. An optimization technique is adopted to obtain a good position of nodes. And optimized smoothing techniques are also adopted to have smooth distribution of the mesh and improve the mesh element quality.

  • In this paper, the flow lines as a function of product design as well as the forging process design are explored using typical application examples. The prediction of flow lines using metal forming simulation technology is introduced along with their characterization. Experimental studies have shown that the metal flow lines have a strong influence on the structural rigidity of the final product. In this study we present several typical applications. One example is the case of severely cut metal flow lines during machining, especially in the region where periodic contacting forces are applied. Another example is the case of abnormal distortion of flow lines which can cause too much elongation or hot shortness due to viscous heating in the region of distortion. A third example is the case of a macrosegregation region which needs to be controlled so it is not adjacent to the region where the force is applied in the use of the final component. An example of weight reduction for an automobile component with improved flow lines is also introduced. These typical applications can provide process engineers with the insight in designing automobile or mechanical components as well as in designing the manufacturing methods to produce various parts.

  • A bronze dagger excavated from the historical site at Bongili in Gyeongju was examined for its microstructure and chemical compositions. The results show that it was forged out of the Cu-10 weight % Sn alloy having no lead. The application of forging in fabrication and the use of an unleaded alloy distinguish this artifact from other bronze daggers that have been reported in Korea, the majority of which were cast from leaded Cu-Sn alloys. This dagger is a rare and valuable archaeological material suggesting a unique bronze technology practiced in ancient Gyeongju area.
