Long Term Changes of the Amount of Surface Runoff in Forest Fire Area (산불발생지에 있어서 표면유출수량의 장기적인 변화에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes of surface runoff by comparisons between burned and unburned area after forest fire. The amount of surface runoff in burned area was more high 1.72 times in the year of fire, 1.44 times in one year later, 1.38 times in five years later and 1.16 times in ten years later than those of unburned area. Therefore, surface runoff in the burned area almost tended to be stabilized like unburned area ten year later after forest fire. The most affecting factors on the amount of surface runoff in burned and unburned area were number of unit rainfall, number of rainfall accumulated and unit rainfall. But coverage was shown to mitigate the amount of surface runoff in burned and unburned area.

Comparison of Litter Production and Nutrient returned to Forest Floor according to Forest Fire Type and Recovery (산불유형과 회복정도에 따른 낙엽생산량과 임상으로 이입되는 영양염류 함량)

  • This study has compared the different types of forest fire sites and the unburned site at Samcheuk-si Gangwon-do by assessing the amount of litter production, nutrient concentration returned to forest floor from July 2007 through October 2010. The research showed that the average amounts of litterfall produced in the unburned site, the crown fire site(C-1), the crown fire site(C-3) and the ground fire site(G-2) were $7.74{\pm}2.56$, $1.17{\pm}0.67$, $2.97{\pm}0.44$ and $2.92{\pm}0.42ton{\cdot}ha^{-1}{\cdot}yr^{-1}$, respectively. In the unburned site, the average amounts of total nitogen(T-N), total phosphorus(T-P), potassium(K), calcium(Ca) and magnesium(Mg) returned to the forest floor were $22.20{\pm}12.43$, $1.16{\pm}0.46$, $2.68{\pm}1.44$, $16.22{\pm}4.69$ and $1.36{\pm}0.32 kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}{\cdot}yr^{-1}$, respectively whereas those in the crown fire site(C-1) were $3.73{\pm}2.31$, $0.10{\pm}0.09$, $0.27{\pm}0.20$, $2.75{\pm}2.58$ and $0.24{\pm}0.27 kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}{\cdot}yr^{-1}$, respectively. This study showed that the nutrient content returned to forest floor was higher in the following order: unburned site(Un) > crown fire site(C-3) > ground fire site(G-2) > crown fire site(C-1).

Estimation on Greenhouse Gases(GHGs) Emission of Large Forest Fire Area in 2013 (RapidEye 영상을 활용한 대형산불피해지의 온실가스 배출량 추정)

  • This study was performed to estimate Greenhouse gases(GHGs) emissions from biomass burning at large forest fire(Ulju, Pohang and Bonghwa) in 2013. The extended methodology to estimate GHGs adopted the IPCC(Intergovermental Panel on Climate Change) Guidelines(2006) equation. For classifying fire damaged area and analyzing burn severity of total three large-fire area damaged, this study used post-fire imagery from Rapideye imagery to compute the Maximum Likelihood Classifiction (MLC). The result of accuracy assessment on burn severity from imagery showed that average overall accuracy was 75.93% and Kapp coefficient was 0.67 Finally, GHGs emissions from biomass burning in the three large-fire area 2013 were estimated as follows: Ulju $CO_2$ 63,260, CO 5.207, $CH_4$ 360, $N_2O$ 28.0 and $NO_x$ $4.4g/kg^{-1}{\cdot}ha^{-1}$, Pohang $CO_2$ 28,675, CO 2.359, $CH_4$ 163, $N_2O$ 12.7 and $NO_x$ $1.9g/kg^{-1}{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ and Bonghwa $CO_2$ 53,086, CO 1,655, $CH_4$ 114, $N_2O$ 23.5 and $NO_x$ $3.6g/kg^{-1}{\cdot}ha^{-1}$.

Short-term Changes in Ant Communities after Forest Fire (산불 후 개미군집의 단기변화)

  • Forest fires disturb communities of forest-dwelling insects by killing or dispersal. Species diversity, species composition, and functional guilds of ant communities will be changed following forest fires. A survey of ants was conducted to find changes in ant communities after a large fire occurred in Goseong within Gwangwon province in South Korea in 1996. In total, 1,308 ants representing 16 species were collected; 696 ants representing 15 species were collected at the burned site, and 612 ants representing 13 species were collected at the unburned site. Contrary to the general expectation which predicts a decrease of diversity and abundance after fire, abundance, species diversity, species composition, and functional guilds of ant communities did not differ between the burned site and the unburned site. Furthermore, estimated species richness was significantly higher at the burned site than at the unburned site. However, monthly occurrences of ants (abundant species and pooled) were different between the burned site and the unburned site. Ants were more abundant at the burned sites than the unburned site just after the fire (May 1996). However, they were more abundant at the unburned site than the burned site in autumn (September and October 1996). This phenomenon might be caused by environmental change (e.g., decrease of soil moisture). In conclusion, the fire did not significantly change ant fauna, as fire in spring cannot destroy ant colonies that are wintering in deep soils.

Long Term Ecological Reseach of Benthic Macroinvertebrates in Samcheok Forest Fired Area (삼척 산불지의 저서성대형무척추동물의 장기 생태 연구)

  • We studied the community fluctuations of benthic macroinvertebrates of forest fired area in Samcheok-si from 2001 to 2009. Total collected macroinvertebrates species were 18 belonging to 14 families, 8 orders, 3 classes, and 2 phyla in 2001, and 70 belonging to 40 families, 15 orders, 7 classes and 5 phyla in 2009 (9 years after the forest fire). During the first four years after the forest fire, dipteran insects were dominant, but after then, ephemeropteran insects have increased in abundance and richness. As time elapsed from the fire, dominance indices were decreasing, while species diversity, richness and species evenness indices were increasing.

  • This study evaluated the risk of forest fires due to climate change in Jeju using the VESTAP. The study primarily aimed at assessing the risks posed to Jeju city and Seogwipo city, and uses actual and projected date from the period of 2000's to 2040's based on RCP 8.5 scenario. Forest fire vulnerability throughout Jeju-do was determined through the standardization of vulnerability index. The highest vulnerability was determined for the towns of Chuja-myeon, Udo-myeon, two downtown areas in Jeju city, Daejeong-eup, and five downtown areas in Seogwipo city, respectively.

Mortality in Pine Stand and Vegetation Recovery after Forest Fire (산불발생 후 소나무 피해 및 식생복원 실태분석)

  • To find out the effect of the vegetation recovery and the problems of forest land, the researches of the mortality in pine stand and vegetation recovery have been carried out from the burned site. In area which is damaged by fire scar on crown and stem, rate of dead is higher. Where stand growing stocks were totally damaged by crown forest fire, most of vegetation was recovered by sprouts and planted seeds. Vegetation recovery power were depending on the condition of soil depth condition. For the artificial recovery, the damage happened by insects in the planted birches plantation. Rate of growth was somewhat different between Pinus densiflora and Pinus thunbergii in the plantation, because of individual growth rate.

The model development and verification for surface branch wood fuels moisture prediction after precipitation during spring period at the east coast region (영동지역 봄철 소나무림에서 강우후 지표연료 직경별 연료습도변화 예측모델 개발 및 검증)

  • In this study, we developed a fuel moisture variation prediction model on each day after precipitation during a spring forest fire exhibition period. For this research, we selected plots in pine forest on Sam-Chuck si and Dong-hae si in Kangwon do according to a forest density(low, mediate, high) and classified a surface woody fuel by a diameter.(below 0.6cm, $0.6{\sim}3cm$, $3{\sim}6cm$, and above 6cm). A validity of this model was verified by applying a fuel moisture variation after precipitation in this spring. In the result, $R^2$ was $0.76{\sim}0.92$. This model will be a useful for improvement of a forest fire danger rate forcast through a prediction a fule moisture in forest.

Case Study of Construction for a Foreign Forest Fire Prevention and Fire Break Zone - Japan Case - (국외 산불 방화림 조성 및 방화선 구축 사례연구 -일본 사례를 중심으로-)

  • 우리나라는 1960년대부터 실시된 조림 정책을 통해 산림이 점차 울창해지고 있어 산림 내 연소물질이 증가되어 산불 피해 강도가 점차 높아지고 있다. 산불방지에 대한 예방차원으로 피해를 저감시키거나 위험을 완화시키는 대표적인 임업적 기술을 적용하는 방법으로 방화림 조성과 방화선 구축을 들 수 있다. 방화림 조성은 산림내 연소물질 관리 또는 수종을 갱신하여 산불확산으로부터 화재강도를 낮추어 산림의 산불위험성을 낮추는 방법이다. 대표적인 기술로는 간벌과 가지치기, 하예작업, 활엽수림 조성 등의 방법이 있다. 방화선 구축작업을 임내 연료물질을 완전히 제거하여 산불이 확산되지 않도록 구축하는 작업이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 일본과 중국의 산불 방화림 조성과 방화선 구축 사례를 조사 분석하여 국내 적용 가능한 기술을 선별하고자 하였다. 그 결과, 산불에 강한 수종을 선발하였고 산불에 강한 숲 조성 방법 및 방화선 구축 방법 등을 도출하였다. 이에 본 연구 결과를 토대로 산림내 주요사찰, 기간시설 및 군사시설 등과 같은 주요시설물이 산불로부터 안전하게 보호되고 피해를 최소화하는데 도움이 될 것으로 사료된다.

Methods to Improve Fire Suppression Capability by Forest Fire Simulation Analysis (산불화재 시뮬레이션분석에 의한 화재진압능력 개선방안)

  • Forest fires in Korea usually start in the fall and occur every year until spring. Most wildfires are human resources that combine topographical characteristics and carelessness, and failure to respond in the initial stage and lack of cleanup are spreading to large-scale wildfires. In order to prevent these wildfires, active cooperation from the public is essential. As can be seen from recent wildfires, the attention of the public is needed above all else because large-scale wildfires in Korea are occurring due to the people's negligence. If a wildfire spreads and becomes large, it causes damage to life and property, and the damage is irreversible. In this study, various methods were used to prevent forest fires and improve initial suppression ability. In order to minimize damage, the model analyzed by the 119 Special Rescue Team in Gangwon, Chungcheong and nearby forest fires was analyzed on the combustion progress and wind direction by time period. The propagation speed by the wind direction was simulated. Until now, most of the wildfires have been extinguished by firefighting, but I hope that the Forest Service will take the lead and maintain coordination with related organizations.
