Quantitative understanding of spatial characteristics of the study site is a prerequisite to investigate water and carbon cycles in agricultural and forest ecosystems, particularly with complex, heterogeneous landscapes. The spatial characteristics of variables related with topography, vegetation and soil in Gwangneung forest watershed are quantified in this study. To characterize topography, information on elevation, slope and aspect extracted from DEM is analyzed. For vegetation and soil, a land-cover map classified from LANDSAT TM images is used. Four satellite images are selected to represent different seasons (30 June 1999, 4 September 2000, 23 September 2001 and 14 February 2002). As a flux index for CO₂ and water vapor, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) is calculated from satellite images for three different grid sizes: MODIS grid (7km x 7km), intensive observation grid (3km x 3km), and unit grid (1km x 1km). Then, these data are analyzed to quantify the spatial scale of heterogeneity based on semivariogram analysis. As expected, the scale of heterogeneity decreases as the grid size decreases and are sensitive to seasonal changes in vegetation. For the two unit grids where the two 40 m flux towers are located, the spatial scale of heterogeneity ranges from 200 to 1,000m, which correspond well to the climatology of the computed tower flux footprint.
In the beginning of $20^{th}$ century, the coal mining industry had an important role in Japan at which two-thirds of the coal product came from the Kitakyushu-Chikuho District (KCD). As a consequence of mining activities, land-use condition in this district showed notable changes. This paper presented a study of land-use changes in coal mining area by characterizing land-use pattern transition over the last 100 years. In order to carry out the rigorous analysis of land-use, a series of land-use maps over the last 100 years was developed using geographic information systems (GIS). The historic topographic map and another available old data were used to investigate the long-term changes of land-use associated with past mining within the GIS platform. The results showed that the utilization of a series of developed land-use maps successfully indicated the difference of land-use pattern in the KCD before and after the peak of mining activities. The general findings from land-use analysis described that forest and farm lands were lost and turned into abandoned sites in the last 100 years.

In this paper, a model for simulating synthetic aperture radar(SAR) images of earth surfaces. The earth surfaces include forest area, rice crop field, other agricultural fields, grass field, road, and water surface. At first, the backscattering models are developed for bare soil surfaces, water surfaces, short vegetation fields such as rice fields and grass field, other agriculture areas, and forest areas. Then, the SAR images are generated from the digital elevation model(DEM) and digital terrain map. The DTM includes ten parameters, such as soil moisture, surface roughness, canopy height, leaf width, leaf length, leaf density, branch length, branch density, trunk length, and trunk density, if applicable. The scattering models are verified with measurements, and applied to generate an SAR image for an area.
The aim of this study was to cross-validate a spatial probabilistic model of landslide likelihood ratios at Boun, Janghung and Yongin, in Korea, using a Geographic Information System (GIS). Landslide locations within the study areas were identified by interpreting aerial photographs, satellite images and field surveys. Maps of the topography, soil type, forest cover, lineaments and land cover were constructed from the spatial data sets. The 14 factors that influence landslide occurrence were extracted from the database and the likelihood ratio of each factor was computed. 'Landslide susceptibility maps were drawn for these three areas using likelihood ratios derived not only from the data for that area but also using the likelihood ratios calculated from each of the other two areas (nine maps in all) as a cross-check of the validity of the method For validation and cross-validation, the results of the analyses were compared, in each study area, with actual landslide locations. The validation and cross-validation of the results showed satisfactory agreement between the susceptibility map and the existing landslide locations.
Landuse maps are prepared from satellite imagery and field observations were conducted at various locations in the study area. Compared to the field data and NDVI and RVI thematic maps, NDVI is better than RVI, because it compensates for changing illumination conditions, surface slope, aspect and other factors. Clouds, water and snow have negative values for RVI and NDVI. Rock and bare soils have similar reflectance in both NIR and visible band, so RVI and NDVI are near zero. In forest areas with good vegetation cover, NDVI is high and landslide occurrence is less. But if annual and biennial vegetations are present and if cultivation practices are changed frequently, NDVI is medium and landslide occurrence is moderate. In areas where deforestation and settlement is in progress, NDVI is less and landslide occurrence is more. The NDVI FCC thematic map may be used as an important layer in GIS application for landslide studies. Analyzing other layers such as slope, rainfall, soil, geology, drainage, lineament, etc with NDVI FCC layer will give a better idea about the identity of landslide prone areas.
The likelihood ratio, logistic regression and artificial neural networks methods are applied and verified for analysis of landslide susceptibility in Yongin, Korea using GIS. From a spatial database containing such data as landslide location, topography, soil, forest, geology and land use, the 14 landsliderelated factors were calculated or extracted. Using these factors, landslide susceptibility indexes were calculated by likelihood ratio, logistic regression and artificial neural network methods. Before the calculation, the study area was divided into two sides (west and east) of equal area, for verification of the methods. Thus, the west side was used to assess the landslide susceptibility, and the east side was used to verify the derived susceptibility. The results of the landslide susceptibility analysis were verified using success and prediction rates. The v erification results showed satisfactory agreement between the susceptibility map and the exis ting data on landslide locations.
Forest accounts for almost 64 percents of total land cover in South Korea. For inventorying, monitoring, and managing such large area of forest, application of remote sensing and geographic information system (RS/GIS) technology is essential. On the basis of spectral characteristics of satellite imagery, forest cover and tree species can be classified, and forest cover map can be prepared. Using three dimensional data of LiDAR(Light Detection and Ranging), tree location and tree height can be measured, and biomass and carbon stocks can be also estimated. In addition, many indices can be extracted using reflection characteristics of land cover. For example, the level of vegetation vitality and forest degradation can be analyzed with VI (vegetation Index) and TGSI (Top Grain Soil Index), respectively. Also, pine wilt disease and o ak w ilt d isease c an b e e arly detected and controled through understanding of change in vegetation indices. RS and GIS take an important role in assessing carbon storage in climate change related projects such as A/R CDM, REDD+ as well. In the field of climate change adaptation, impact and vulnerability can be spatio-temporally assessed for national and local level with the help of spatio-temporal data of GIS. Forest growth, tree mortality, land slide, forest fire can be spatio-temporally estimated using the models in which spatio-temporal data of GIS are added as influence variables.

Actual vegetation map drown with the scale 1 to 100 and Alnus japonica population in Ja-neup and Woong-neup of the Mujechi moor were described in order to monitor long-termly and preserve permanently, where is a very rare Molinietea moor and a legally protected area. A total of 3036 plots of 5m $\times$ 5m were surveyed during summer 1996. Thiessen polygons of 1491 alder trees were derived from the plot data. Actual vegetation map was illustrated by 6 cover types such as needle spike-rush type, moor-grass type, alder-moor type, eulalia type, oak forest type, and exposed site. Molinia grasses native to the moor and Miscanthus grasses alien to the moor are reciprocally dominant. The area of Molinia grasslands was rapidly in decline and alder population size was dramatically in increase in the moor, particularly in Woong-neup. In Molinietea moor preservation more attention should be focused on the regulation of a nutrient rich soil from forest road and fire.
The objective of this study was to provide basic information for selecting the right timing and the right place of erosion control of stream on Gyeongsangnam-do. In order to achieve this objective, a total of 526 erosion control dams and 230 mountains stream conservation facilities on the constructed places and construction planned places for the erosion control were investigated on site, forest physiognomy, and hydrologic conditions. The erosion control dams and mountain stream conservation facilities were mostly constructed in the area, which has the sedimentary rock, 200-400m of altitude, a slope of 21~30°, and II of landslide hazard map. Among the forest environmental factors, it was only similar to the construction frequency in the areas that have small diameter class, III age class. Also, we investigated the hydrological environmental factors that determine the size and numbers of erosion control dam. The places constructed to the highest frequency were below 50ha in the area, 2.1~4.0km/㎢ of drainage density, longitudinal water system, 61~90mm of maximum precipitation per hour, and 201~300mm of day maximum precipitation. As the results, the sites and floodgate conditions between the constructed places and stream conservation facilities for the erosion control showed to be very similar. Therefore, these results indicate that the erosion control of the stream of the areas, which have the disruption of mountain peaks and the high erosion risk areas, should be used on both the erosion control dam and stream conservation facilities.

This paper demonstrates a regional analysis of landslide occurrence potential by applying geographic information system to the Kumi City selected as a pilot study area. The estimate criteria related to natural and humane environmental factors which affect landslides were first established. A slope map and a aspect map were extracted from DEM, which was generated from the contour layers of digital topographic maps, and a NDVI vegetation map and a land cover map were obtained through satellite image processing. After the spatial database was constructed, indexes of landslide occurrence potential were computed and then a few landslide-potential areas were extracted by an overlay method. It was ascertained that there are high landslide-potential at areas of about 30% incline, aspects including either south or east at least, adjacent to water areas or pointed end of the water system, in or near fault zones, covered with medium vegetable. For more synthetic and accurate analysis, soil data, forest data, underground water level data, meteorological data and so on should be added to the spatial database.
