  • Background and objective: Plants in temples are the results of cultural symbolization that embraces the experience and enlightenment of humans about life. As a way to improve the acceptance of the foreign religion, China gave cultural symbolization to plants in temple gardens through integration with traditional cultures and the understanding of the nature of plants themselves. This study aimed to identify cultural symbolism and signs of acculturation associated with Buddhist plants, targeting Bolisu, the most essential and symbolic plant in temple garden forests in China and Korea. Methods: The morphological and ecological characteristics of plants, functions, the texts that contained the history of Buddhism and literary works were examined through literature review, and the relation of Ficus religiosa with its planting conditions and nature, and Buddhist culture was explored. In addition, the cultural value of Buddhist plants themselves in establishing temples and the reason why Bolisu was planted in temples were reviewed through time series analysis. The obtained results were interpreted using an inductive method to identify substitutes for F. religiosa, cultural symbolism and signs of acculturation. Results: F. religiosa as one of the three holy trees and the five trees and six flowers in Buddhism is known as the original Bolisu. Since it grows well and is widely distributed in regions that accepted Indian Buddhism, it became the most representative holy tree in Buddhism. From the perspective of tree shape and nature, F. religiosa is in line with the Buddhist spirit of saving those in need with mercy and redeeming mankind, and figuratively shows that perfection can be attained like the fruit of Bolisu. Chines Buddhism had adopted highly symbolic plants for a long period of time as a means to spread the same belief and doctrines as Indian Buddhism. In China, however, there were only limited areas suitable for the growth of F. religiosa, and for this reason, borrowed Bolisu trees including Tilia. miqueliana, T. mandshurica and T. amurensis and other plants such as F. virens Ait. var. sublanceolata, G. biloba and M. alba were planted as a substitute in most regions, having been given with symbolism and belief as Bolisu. Conclusion: Chinese Buddhism planted the same plants as Indian Buddhism in order to enhance symbolism and also similar substitutes to express the same symbolism. This is a kind of acculturation and its influence and customs were not limited to China, but were introduced to Korea, The difference between China and Korea was that G. biloba was excluded from the substitute for Bolisu in Korea.

  • Although domestic public libraries achieved quantitative growth based on the 1st and 2nd comprehensive library development plans, there were some qualitative shortcomings, and various studies have been conducted to improve them. Most of the preceding studies have limitations in that they are limited to social and economic factors and statistical analysis. Therefore, in this study, by applying the spatiotemporal concept to quantitatively calculate the decrease in public library loan demand due to rainfall and heatwave, by clustering areas with high demand for book loan due to weather changes and areas where it is not, factors inside and outside public libraries and After the combination, changes in public library loan demand according to weather changes were analyzed. As a result of the analysis, there was a difference in the decrease due to the weather for each public library, and it was found that there were some differences depending on the characteristics and spatial location of the public library. Also, when the temperature was over 35℃, the decrease in book loan demand increased significantly. As internal factors, the number of seats, the number of books, and area were derived. As external factors, the public library access ramp, cafe, reading room, floating population in their teens, and floating population of women in their 30s/40s were analyzed as important variables. The results of this analysis are judged to contribute to the establishment of policies to promote the use of public libraries in consideration of the weather in a specific season, and also suggested limitations of the study.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the propagation characteristics of Diabelia spathulata (Siebold & Zucc.) Landrein through seeding and cutting methods. The seed germination rate was meager (0.22~3.56%). In hardwood cutting, the highest rooting rate was 36.1% in sand + perlite (2:1) and 37.8% in 1000 PPM of IBA pre-treatment. Softwood cutting showed the highest rooting rate when the cutting diameter was 3 to 5 mm and the cutting length was 7 to 8 cm. In particular, the highest rooting rate of 80% was observed in the sand among the 8 cultivation media treatments. In the case of root cuttings, the rooting rate was 83.3~96.7% in all cultivation media. The highest rooting rate was observed when the diameter of the cutting was 7 to 8 mm, and the length of the cutting was about 10 to 11 cm. Among cutting methods, root cutting showed the highest rooting rate. Division showed a 100% rooting rate regardless of size or growth status. For Diabelia spathulata (Siebold & Zucc.) Landrein, propagation by cuttings was more efficient than seeding. However, Further research on the morphophysiological dormancy and dormancy break of seeds is needed for seed propagation.

  • Vegetation indices based on selected wavelength reflectance measurements are used to represent crop growth and physiological conditions. However, the anisotropic properties of the crop canopy surface can govern spectral reflectance and vegetation indices. In this study, we applied an ensemble of bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) models to high-resolution Sentinel-2 satellite imagery and compared the differences between correction results before and after reflectance. In the red and near-infrared (NIR) band reflectance images, BRDF-corrected outlier values appeared in certain urban and paddy fields of farmland areas and forest shadow areas. These effects were equally observed when calculating the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and 2-band enhanced vegetation index (EVI2). Furthermore, the outlier values in corrected NIR band were shown in pixels shadowed by mountain terrain. These results are expected to contribute to the development and improvement of BRDF models in high-resolution satellite images.

  • This paper investigates machine learning models for predicting the designation of administrative issues in the KOSDAQ market through various techniques. When a company in the Korean stock market is designated as administrative issue, the market recognizes the event itself as negative information, causing losses to the company and investors. The purpose of this study is to evaluate alternative methods for developing a artificial intelligence service to examine a possibility to the designation of administrative issues early through the financial ratio of companies and to help investors manage portfolio risks. In this study, the independent variables used 21 financial ratios representing profitability, stability, activity, and growth. From 2011 to 2020, when K-IFRS was applied, financial data of companies in administrative issues and non-administrative issues stocks are sampled. Logistic regression analysis, decision tree, support vector machine, random forest, and LightGBM are used to predict the designation of administrative issues. According to the results of analysis, LightGBM with 82.73% classification accuracy is the best prediction model, and the prediction model with the lowest classification accuracy is a decision tree with 71.94% accuracy. As a result of checking the top three variables of the importance of variables in the decision tree-based learning model, the financial variables common in each model are ROE(Net profit) and Capital stock turnover ratio, which are relatively important variables in designating administrative issues. In general, it is confirmed that the learning model using the ensemble had higher predictive performance than the single learning model.

  • The purpose of this study was to understand the vegetation structure and ecological characteristic of Bulgapsan(Mt.) Provincial Park by setting up and surveying 64 plots(100m2). The analysis using the TWINSPAN and DCA techniques found seven community groups: Pinus densiflora-Quercus variabilis community, P. densiflora-P. rigida-Q. serrata community, Q. variabilis-Carpinus tschonoskii community, Q. aliena-Q. variabilis-Cornus controversa community, Q. aliena-Platycarya strobilacea community, Broad-leaved miced community and Q. variabilis community. The result of vegetation community structure analysis showed that P. densiflora community and deciduous Quercus spp. community were in competition, and succession to Quercus spp. community was expected. In the case of other broad-leaved forests, the current status is expected to be maintained. But continuous monitoring is required in areas where Neolitsea sericea and Cephalotaxus appear, which grow naturally in warm temperate forest and southern temperate vegetation zone. Species diversity by communities are confirmed to be highest at 2.6654 in the actively competitive P. densiflora-P. rigida-Q. serrata community, and the lowest in the Deciduous broad-leaved forests community at 1.2548. The results of the tree rings and annual growth analysis showed that dominant trees had an average age of more than 37~87 years. Among them, N. sericea designated as a natural monument was 48~56 years old.

  • The DMZ is a 248km long thin green line which has various landscapes of fields, hills and mountains. This study focused on western part of DMZ and vicinity which consist of abandoned rice paddy, wetlands and fields. The main purpose of this study is to detect the vegetation vitality from the western part of MDL to DMZ vicinity and identify and quantify ecological buffer(ecotone) width adopting logistic function derived from 'Vegetation Index-distance curve' using an Landsat ETM+ image acquired on June of 2002. Green leaf vegetation was quantified to identify the ecotone buffer in western DMZ and vicinity(civilian control area: CCA) using Transformed Vegetation Index(TVI) which is one of common measurement among various indices. Vegetation measurement from Military Demarcation Line(MDL) to vicinity area was investigated at 500m intervals to 10kms of southern and northern part of western DMZ and vicinity. The Logistic function models the sigmoid curve of growth with three stages of growth of initial competition and maturity. In the TVI-distance logistic curve, the maturity is high vegetation vitality, the competition is vitality changing, and the initial is low vitality. In the TVI-distance curve, maturity area of high TVI value is core area for ecological conservation, and the competition area between inflection points can be an ecotone(ecological buffer). In case of southern part, maximum TVI value is 221.92 and minimum is 207.16, and maximum TVI of northen part is 215.32 and minimum is 188.35. That means forest devastation of north Korean part of DMZ and vicinity is severer than that of south Korea. The width of core area for ecological conservation is 2,311m, and ecotone in the southern part is 5,339m, so minimum width from MDL for ecological conservation can be computed as 7,651m. In case of Northern part, the width of core area is 1,841m, and ecotone buffer is 5,014m, so ecological conservation width can be estimated as 6,855m. In case of northen part, width of estimated core area is less than that of DMZ width, which means ecological disturbance is very severe in northern part of western DMZ.

  • Three dietary treatments were compared over two years to determine the effects of dietary protein levels and feeding patterns on velvet production in red deer (Cervus elaphus). The LL group received a 13% protein diet whereas the HH group received a 19% protein diet. The LH group switched from the low to high protein diet at the time of antler casting. Significant relationships were found between velvet production and the girth and length of main beam (p<0.01), daily growth rate of velvet (p<0.01), body weight at cutting time (p<0.05 in 1998 and p<0.01 in 1999), date of casting (p<0.01), and body weight and velvet production of the previous year (p<0.05 in 1998 and p<0.01 in 1999). Different levels of protein in diets in this study did not show statistically significant different effects in general. The girth of velvet, summed for top, middle and bottom of the main beam, tended to be thickest in HH for two years and thinnest in LL for 1998 and in LH for 1999. The main beam tended to be longest in HH at 46.3cm in 1998 and 45.2cm in 1999 and shortest in LH at 39.9cm in 1998 and 41.5cm in 1999. Velvet fresh weight tended to be highest in HH at 2,600$\pm$1,000g in 1998 and 3,038$\pm$867g in 1999 and lowest in LH at 2,287$\pm$826g in 1998 and 2,739$\pm$1,079g in 1999. Daily growth rate of velvet antler tended to be greatest in HH (43$\pm$16g/day in 1998 and 51$\pm$14g/day in 1999) and least in LH (38$\pm$15g/day in 1998 and 45$\pm$18g/day in 1999).

  • This study generated regression models to estimate the carbon storage and uptake from the urban deciduous landscape trees through a direct harvesting method, and established essential information to quantify carbon reduction from urban greenspace. Tree species for the study included Acer palmatum, Zelkova serrata, Prunus yedoensis, and Ginkgo biloba, which are usually planted as urban landscape trees. Tree individuals for each species were sampled reflecting various diameter sizes at a given interval. The study measured biomass for each part including the roots of sample trees to compute the total carbon storage per tree. Annual carbon uptake per tree was quantified by analyzing radial growth rates of stem samples at breast height. The study then derived a regression model easily applicable in estimating carbon storage and uptake per tree for the 4 species by using diameter at breast height(dbh) as an independent variable. All the regression models showed high fitness with $r^2$ values of 0.94~0.99. Carbon storage and uptake per tree and their differences between diameter classes increased as the diameter sizes got larger. The carbon storage and uptake tended to be greatest with Zelkova serrata in the same diameter sizes, followed by Prunus yedoensis and Ginkgo biloba in order. A Zelkova serrata tree with 15cm in dbh stored about 54kg of carbon and annually sequestered 7 kg, based on a regression model for the species. The study has broken new grounds to overcome limitations of the past studies which substituted, due to a difficulty in direct cutting and root digging of urban landscape trees, coefficients from the forest trees such as biomass expansion factors, ratios of below ground/above ground biomass, and diameter growth rates. Study results can be useful as a tool or skill to evaluate carbon reduction by landscape trees in urban greenspace projects of the government.
