The intestinal microbiota plays a crucial role in determining human health, rendering it a major focus of scientific investigation. Rather than eliminating all microbes, promoting the proliferation of beneficial microorganisms within the gut has been recognized as a more effective approach to improving health. Unfavorable conditions potentially alter gut microbial populations, including a reduction in microbial diversity. However, intentionally enhancing the abundance of beneficial gut microbes can restore a state of optimal health. Polysaccharides are widely acknowledged for their potential to improve the gut microbiota. This review emphasizes the findings of recent studies examining the effects of forest product-derived polysaccharides on enhancing the gut microbiota and alleviating inflammation, diabetes symptoms, and obesity. The findings of several studies reviewed in this paper strongly suggest that forest products serve as an excellent dietary source for improving the gut microbiota and potentially offer valuable dietary interventions for chronic health problems, such as inflammation, diabetes, and obesity.

This study was to investigate the effect of chitosan molecular weight, its charge density, and its surface coating treatment on the antibacterial properties of paper. For this study, E.coil was used for antibacterial experiment. Results obtained were as follows : 1. The antibacterial properties of chitosan was significant on the surface-treated sheet. 2. Antibacterial property surface treatment was appeared to be effective when film was formed on the paper surface. 3. The antibacterial properties of chitosan-treated paper was dependent on the amount and the molecular weight of chitosan used. The lower the molecular weight of the chitosan down to 30,000 the better the antibacterial properties in this experiment. 4. Determination of the degree of chitosan-deacetylation by colloidal titration method was consistent with the more complicated and conventional FT-IR method.
Objective of this study is to provide basic information for developing more differentiated and targeted forest healing policy and Korean medical healing programs grounded on consumer preference for forest based Korean medical healing tourism products. The internet survey(CAWI) by percentage quota sampling with 400 Seoulite ages over 30 by the age, area, and gender was conducted, and 317 samples were used for a final analysis. 61.5% of the Seoulite associated 'forest bath/walking in the woods/tree' with an image of a forest based Korean medical healing tourism product, and preference for the product and the intention to use were positive at the percentages of 72.9% and 67.5%, respectively. Preferred areas were Seoul/Gyeonggi-do(53.5%) and Gangwon-do(38.8%). 'Stress solving and refreshment', 'taking a forest bath and a walk', and 'maintaining and promoting health' were the main purposes of the use. As for a therapy, 'walking therapy' was most preferred, and 'ergotherapy' was the next. First priority as for a use facility was 'healing trail', and 'professional medical facility' ranked second. Although important decision attributes were ' cost of use', 'food', and 'friendliness of medical staff', all the other sets of attributes related to use convenience, quality of medical service and tourism activities also recorded high, which forecasts higher consumer expectation for the product. As the result showing differences in consumer preference by the demographic segmentation, differentiated and segmented consumer needs should be considered when planing and managing a product. The scope of the study is limited to a demographic segmentation which is a basic stage of understanding consumer preference, therefore more detailed future researches on complicated and multi-dimensional consumer needs are required.

This study was carried out to examine the perceptions of consumers and forest product manufacturers in South Korea about forest certification and to identify their willingness-to-pay for certified products by personal interviews. Sixteen percent of interviewees knew and heard about forest certification. However, fifty-six percent of interviewees had an intention to participate in forest certification system. The consumers' group can be described in relative terms as the male of 30 age bracket. The average price premium charged to consumers was higher than one paid to manufacturers, and thus manufacturers are willing to include the additional costs for certified products.

To replace the imported biomass and to effectively cope with growing RPS(Renewable Portfolio Standard) in power sector, the domestic forest biomass resources for wood pellets were estimated from the preceding research and annual growth rate of forest trees in this study. Assuming that 20% of the by-product from forest trees processing were used as raw material for wood pellet and the wood pellet production capacity was based on the average value derived from the above two methods, unused by-product and residues generated 1.99million tons in 2016, 2.28million tons in 2020 and 3.08million tons in 2030. If 20% of by-products(pebbles, sawdust, etc.) from roundwood processing were used as raw material for wood pellets, the wood pellet could be produced 2.74million tons/year in 2016, 2.95million tons/year in 2020, 3.98million tons/year in 2030. Therefore, total amounts of wood pellet would be increased to 2.74million tons/year in 2016, 3.14million tons/year in 2020, 4.23million tons/year in 2030 when it considered unused by-product and residues from wood processing as raw materials.

The Annals of beeswax applied-Joseon Dynasty have some serious damages such as cracks, brown, red or black spots, and discolorations by chemical and biological degradation, but others without any beeswax application have still been keeping good quality during over several hundred years. It would be convinced that the beeswax applied in the Annals resulted in these deteriorations. Therefore, in order to focus on the aging mechanism and conservation techniques for the beeswax-applied Annals of Joseon Dynasty, the beeswax applying and dewaxing techniques of Hanji were tried by auto bar coater with a hot plate, and by heat-pressure sensitive extracting treatments. The ageing behaviors of beeswaxed Hanji and dewaxed Hanji were investigated by measuring the changes of physical, optical, morphological, and chemical properties, through accelerated ageing treatment in dry oven at $150^{\circ}C$ during 48 hours. Consequently, the ageing actions of beeswaxed Hanji were even faster than that of Hanji. The optimum dewaxed amounts from beeswaxed Hanji was also obtained in pressure of $40\;kg_f$ under heating conditions.

In the previous experiment, it was found that OCC pre-treatment with Hobart mixer at 20-25% consistency for 3 hrs or more followed by the application of the equal refining time, caused the increase of tensile strength, burst strength, compressive strength and tear resistance, compared to the no pre-treated. Four completely different fibers, which were Hw-BKP, Sw-BKP, White ledger, and OCC were selected for this experiment to investigate the effect of mechanical pre-treatment process on different fibers. From the experiment, it was found that the mechanical pre-treatment did not decrease fiber length at all, but decreased freeness, com-pared to the no pre-treated, when the same refining time was applied. WRVs of the pre-treated fibers were higher than the no pre-treated at the same freeness level. It was speculated that the mechanical pre-treatment induced only hydrophilic nature of fibers without damaging fiber length by delaminating fiber walls. The fiber surface area and the physical strength differences of handsheets will be discussed in the next publication.

Korea is a small country with extremely high population density. Industrialization of the nation resulted GNP per capita of over 2,000$ in 1986 with an inevitable by-product, high level of pollution in many areas. Forest land is now acknowledged as not only a wood production site but also an origin of much more important intangible values, water and clean air, soil conservation, and recreational and scenic values. Mostly devastated forest land from Korean War has been recovered under the strong afforestation drive from the government. The first Forest Development Plan was mostly reforestation phase and the second Forest Development Plan is foundation establishment phase. The third and later Plans are to enlarge economical forest and to maintain sustatined yield phase. Forestry administration as well as forest research certainly played a great role in successful accomplishment of two Forest Development Plans. For effective planning and accomplishment of the third Forest Development Plan close cooperation among policy makers, forest managers and research workers are mostly required.
Forest by-product silage (FPS) comprised of foliage, shrubs, and wild grasses was prepared to examine feeding value as sole roughage source for spotted (sika) deer. This diet was compared with imported oak leaf hay (OLH) and a commercial mixed ration (CMR) in digestion balance trials with spotted deer. Dry matter intake was highest (p<0.05) on the OLH, whereas intakes of the FPS and CMR were similar (p>0.05). Digestibility of dry matter was highest (p<0.05) for CMR. Digestibility of crude protein was highest in CMR and lowest in OLH and there were significant differences (p<0.05) among diets. Average daily gain, digestible dry matter intake and digestibility of crude fiber did not differ significantly among diets. Nitrogen intake, urinary and digestible nitrogen were highest (p<0.05) in CMR. However, nitrogen retention was not significantly different. Consequently, FPS is a good roughage source for deer having high digestibility, dry matter intake and availability of nitrogen.
