In this study, the performance of the online GPS processing services provided by diverse institutions was compared so that domestic GPS users in geodesy and surveying can easily get precise coordinates using those services. In order to evaluate the accuracy of each online GPS processing service, we calculated coordinates of seven GPS permanent stations located in Korea and foreign countries using APPS, CSRS-PPP, AUSPOS and OPUS. And the results were compared with published coordinates by IERS and National Geographic Information Institute. In the cases of foreign stations, the mean value of the horizontal errors was 9.3 mm and the descending order of accuracies was APPS, AUSPOS, OPUS and CSRS-PPP. In the cases of Korean stations, the mean value of the horizontal errors was 37.6 mm, although the order of accuracy was similar to the foreign cases; AUSPOS, APPS, OPUS and CSRS-PPP. Also, the average value of 3-D errors in Korean cases was about 3 cm larger than that of foreign cases and a bias of 3 cm was observed in the north direction.
This paper analyzes interactive activities of foreign R&D centers operating in Korea. Interactive activities refer to collaborative R&D activities, R&D outsourcing, and formation of communities between foreign R&D centers and Korean firms and institutions. Active interactions between foreign R&D centers and their Korean partners (Korean firms and universities, research institutes etc.) are essential in promoting spillover effects from foreign R&D centers. Using the survey of 76 foreign R&D centers operating in Korea, this paper found the intensity of interplay between foreign R&D centers and the Korean firms and institutions was not so high. And the partners of foreign R&D centers with the mission of finding new technologies in Korea are mainly customers rather than universities and research institutes. This result is markedly different from previous studies focused on the cases of western countries, where the partners of foreign R&D centers that have the mission of finding new technologies were mainly local universities and research institutes.
We have observed foreign body in food and air passage in 138 cases during the period from Jan. 1972 to Dec. 1980 in E.N.T. department of Kyung Hee university hospital. The following results were obtained. 1) Age distribution was predominent in under 5 years old showing 102 cases (73.9%). 2) Distribution of location was 132 cases in food passage and 6 cases in air passage. 3) In food passage, malewas 81 cases (61.4%). In air passage, male was 4 cases(66.7%). 4) Coin was the most frequent foreign body in food passage. Others were metals, meats, bony pieces, and shell. 5) Distribution of lodgement was frequent in first narrowing of esophagus. 6) Duration of lodgement was 112 cases (84.8%) within 24 hours in food passage and 4 cases (66.7%) within 24 hours in air passage.
In Korea, cases of direct insertion of foreign bodies into the rectum are rare in the literature. Most cases of rectal insertion of foreign bodies are associated with sexual acts and psychiatric disorder such as schizophrenia. Objects inserted into the anus are usually blunt and shaped like the male genitalia. The removal method can be varied depending on the size and shape of the foreign object, its anatomical location, and the accompanying complications. In cases wherein attempts to remove the object fail or there are rectal perforation and peritonitis complications, immediate laparotomy may be required in order to prevent serious complications such as sepsis. Here, we report on a case of rectal perforation and peritonitis due to insertion of a foreign body in a middle-aged patient, with a literature review. He inserted a sharp pig backbone in his rectum and he only had depression. The patient underwent a Hartmann's operation as well as psychiatric counseling and treatment. Thus, after removal of foreign bodies, psychiatric counseling and treatment should be carried out in order to prevent similar accidents and to minimize the need for trauma medicine.
The laryngeal foreign bodies are not common among the foreign bodies in the air and food passage, however, it would cause fatal airway obstruction without performing immediate endoscopic removal or emergency tracheostomy procedure. It is our intent to report three cases of laryngeal foreign bodies, and to discuss diagnostic procedures, preventive measures and management of this problems.
Children tend to ingest foreign bodies. The majority present in children between the ages of 6 months and 3 years. We experienced 2 cases of unusual gastrointestinal complications caused by ingested foreign bodies. First case was a 10-month-old male with intestinal perforation due to two pieces of ingested magnetic heads. Second case was a 7-month-old girl with esophageal stricture due to an ingested particle of plastic toy.

Foreign body aspiration is a cause of the accidental death at home. Therefore, early intervention and proper management is important. A bronchoscopy is indicated whenever there is a suggestive history and medical opinion. Occasionally, foreign body removal with bronchoscopy may be fail. But, on the situation, there is no definite recommended standard management. We experienced two cases of bronchial foreign body could not be removed with bronchoscopy at first intervention. The one was diagnosed too late. Endobronchial granulation tissue and edema made it impossible to find the foreign body at first bronchoscopy. After steroid and antibiotic therapy, foreign body could be removed with secondary bronchoscopy. Another was bronchial foreign body jammed tightly bronchus intermedius. Even after medical therapy, patient got aggravated. So foreign body was removed with bronchotomy.
Background: This retrospective study investigated the incidence rate of accidental foreign body aspiration and ingestion according to patient sex, age, and dental department. This study aimed to verify whether the incidence rate is higher in geriatric than in younger patients and whether it is different among dental departments. Methods: Accidental foreign body aspiration and ingestion cases were collected from electronic health records and the safety report system of Yonsei University Dental Hospital from January 2011 to December 2017. The collected data included patients' age, sex, medical conditions, treatment procedures, and foreign objects that were accidentally aspirated or ingested. The incidence rate was calculated as the number of accidental foreign body aspirations and ingestions relative to the total number of patient visits. Differences depending on the patients' sex, age, and dental department were statistically identified. Results: There were 2 aspiration and 37 ingestion cases during the 7-year analysis period. The male to female incidence ratio was 2.8:1. The incidence rate increased with age and increased rapidly among those aged 80 years or older. Seven of the 37 patients with accidental foreign body ingestion had intellectual disability, Lou Gehrig's disease, dystonia, or oral and maxillofacial cancer. The incidence rate was highest in the Predoctoral Student Clinic and the Department of Prosthodontics. The most frequently swallowed objects were fixed dental prostheses and dental implant components. Conclusion: The incidence rate of accidental foreign body aspiration and ingestion differed according to patient sex, age, and dental department. Dental practitioners must identify high-risk patients and apply various methods to prevent accidental foreign body aspiration and ingestion in dental clinics. Inexperienced practitioners should be particularly careful.
Dsysphagia or difficulty in swallowing is a symptom wich indicates the presence of disease or dysfunction. Because the cause & the original site are variable, it is significant to study the clinicostatistical analysis on 133 cases with complant of dysphagia during the last one year in the department of Otolaryngology, College of Medicine, Seoul National University. The results are as follows; 1) Among the total O.P.D. patients (6313 cases), patients complaining the dysphagia are 2.1%. 2) Male to female sex ratio is 1. 3 to 1, slightly predominent in male and average are 35.7 years. 3) The duration of chief complaint is about 251 days in average, but excluding the 8 cases with more than year of symptom, it is about 40 days. In detailed analysis of the duration; 67 cases (50.4%) occurred within 1 weak: 24 cases (18.0%), 1 week to 1 month: 34 cases (25.6%), 1 month to 1 year: 8 cases (6.0%), more than 1 year. 4) As to the site of origin, the oropharyngolaryngeal origin 106 cases (76.7%) are 4 times as many as the esophageal origin 27 cases (20.3%). 5) As to the etiological classification: inflammation 67 cases (50.4%), tumor 28 cases (21.0%), corrosive agent 14 cases (10.5%), foreign body 11 cases (8.3%) in order. 6) As to the disease entity: pharyngitis and tonsillitis 42 cases (31.6%), stomatitis 14 cases (10.5%), corrosive esophagitis 14 cases (10.5%), laryngeal tumor 12 cases (9.0%), peritonsillar abscess 9 cases (6.8%), esophageal foreign body 7 cases (5.2%), tongue tumor 7 cases (5.2%), tonsillar tumor 6 cases (4.5%), (pharyngeal foreign body 4 cases (3.0%)in order.
To evaluate the diagnostic value of pulmonary perfusion scan, we obtained 99mTc MAA per-fusion lung scan from 25 cases of airway foreign bodies. The results were as follows. 1) Significant changes in blood gases were not observed after the establishment of regional hypoperfusion caused by airway foreign body. 2) Near total or total defect was noted on perfusion scan from most of the airway foreign body. 3) There was correspondance of findings of perfusion lung scan and duration of airway foreign body. 4) After the removal of airway foreign bodies, perfusion scan abnormalities were reversed in parallel with the recovery of pulmonary blood flow. We concluded that pulmonary perfusion scan may be valuable for detection of foreign body and reversible hypoperfusion.
