  • The fuzzy time series is introduced by Song and Chissom([8]) to construct a pattern for time series with vague or linguistic value. Many methods using the interval and fuzzy logical relationship related with historical data have been suggested to enhance the forecasting accuracy. But they do not fully reflect the fluctuation of historical data. Therefore, we propose the interval rearranged method to reflect the fluctuation of historical data and to improve the forecasting accuracy of fuzzy time series. Using the well-known enrollment, the proposed method is discussed and the forecasting accuracy is evaluated. Empirical studies show that the proposed method in forecasting accuracy is superior to existing methods and it fully reflects the fluctuation of historical data.

  • This paper is to explore technological forecasting methodologies and their application to military R&D programming. Among a number of forecasting methodologies, eight frequently used methods are explained. They are; Delphi method, analogy, growth curve, trend extrapolation, analytical model, breakthrough, normative method, and combined method. Due to the characteristic situation of a developing country, the application of technological forecasting to the Korean military R&D programming is limited. Therefore, only two forecasting methods such as Delphi and normative method are utilized in the development of a decision model for the military R&D programming. The model consists of a dynamic programming using decision tree model, which optimizes the total cost to equip a certain military item under a given range of risk during a given period. Some pitfalls in forecasting methodologies and of the model are discussed.

  • This study presents the empirical results of comparing several demand forecasting methods for Supply Chain Management(SCM). Adaptive exponential smoothing using change detection statistics (Jun) is compared with Trigg and Leach's adaptive methods and SAS time series forecasting systems using weekly SCM demand data. The results show that Jun's method is superior to others in terms of one-step-ahead forecast error and eight-step-ahead forecast error. Based on the results, we conclude that the forecasting performance of SCM solution can be improved by the proposed adaptive forecasting method.

  • BP neural network model and multiple-regression model were composed for forecasting the special-days load. Special-days load was forecasted using that neural network model made use of pattern conversion ratio and multiple-regression made use of weekday-change ratio. This methods identified the suitable as that special-days load of short and long term was forecasted with the weekly average percentage error of 1∼2[%] in the weekly peak load forecasting model using pattern conversion ratio. But this methods were hard with special-days load forecasting of summertime. therefore it was forecasted with the multiple-regression models. This models were used to the weekday-change ratio, and the temperature-humidity and discomfort-index as explanatory variable. This methods identified the suitable as that compared forecasting result of weekday load with forecasting result of special-days load because months average percentage error was alike. And, the fit of the presented forecast models using statistical tests had been proved. Big difficult problem of peak load forecasting had been solved that because identified the fit of the methods of special-days load forecasting in the paper presented.

  • To enhance the competitive advantage in a constantly changing business environment, an enterprise management must make the right decision in many business activities based on both internal and external information. Thus, providing accurate information plays a prominent role in management's decision making. Intuitively, historical data can provide a feasible estimate through the forecasting models. Therefore, if the service department can estimate the service quantity for the next period, the service department can then effectively control the inventory of service related resources such as human, parts, and other facilities. In addition, the production department can make load map for improving its product quality. Therefore, obtaining an accurate service forecast most likely appears to be critical to manufacturing companies. Numerous investigations addressing this problem have generally employed statistical methods, such as regression or autoregressive and moving average simulation. However, these methods are only efficient for data with are seasonal or cyclical. If the data are influenced by the special characteristics of product, they are not feasible. In our research, we propose a forecasting framework that predicts service demand of manufacturing organization by combining Case-based reasoning (CBR) and leveraging an unsupervised artificial neural network based clustering analysis (i.e., Self-Organizing Maps; SOM). We believe that this is one of the first attempts at applying unsupervised artificial neural network-based machine-learning techniques in the service forecasting domain. Our proposed approach has several appealing features : (1) We applied CBR and SOM in a new forecasting domain such as service demand forecasting. (2) We proposed our combined approach between CBR and SOM in order to overcome limitations of traditional statistical forecasting methods and We have developed a service forecasting tool based on the proposed approach using an unsupervised artificial neural network and Case-based reasoning. In this research, we conducted an empirical study on a real digital TV manufacturer (i.e., Company A). In addition, we have empirically evaluated the proposed approach and tool using real sales and service related data from digital TV manufacturer. In our empirical experiments, we intend to explore the performance of our proposed service forecasting framework when compared to the performances predicted by other two service forecasting methods; one is traditional CBR based forecasting model and the other is the existing service forecasting model used by Company A. We ran each service forecasting 144 times; each time, input data were randomly sampled for each service forecasting framework. To evaluate accuracy of forecasting results, we used Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) as primary performance measure in our experiments. We conducted one-way ANOVA test with the 144 measurements of MAPE for three different service forecasting approaches. For example, the F-ratio of MAPE for three different service forecasting approaches is 67.25 and the p-value is 0.000. This means that the difference between the MAPE of the three different service forecasting approaches is significant at the level of 0.000. Since there is a significant difference among the different service forecasting approaches, we conducted Tukey's HSD post hoc test to determine exactly which means of MAPE are significantly different from which other ones. In terms of MAPE, Tukey's HSD post hoc test grouped the three different service forecasting approaches into three different subsets in the following order: our proposed approach > traditional CBR-based service forecasting approach > the existing forecasting approach used by Company A. Consequently, our empirical experiments show that our proposed approach outperformed the traditional CBR based forecasting model and the existing service forecasting model used by Company A. The rest of this paper is organized as follows. Section 2 provides some research background information such as summary of CBR and SOM. Section 3 presents a hybrid service forecasting framework based on Case-based Reasoning and Self-Organizing Maps, while the empirical evaluation results are summarized in Section 4. Conclusion and future research directions are finally discussed in Section 5.

  • This paper presents a new combined forecasting method that is guided by the soft set theory (CFBSS) to predict business failures with different sample sizes. The proposed method combines both qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis to improve forecasting performance. We considered an expert system (ES), logistic regression (LR), and support vector machine (SVM) as forecasting components whose weights are determined by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. The proposed procedure was applied to real data sets from Chinese listed firms. For performance comparison, single ES, LR, and SVM methods, the combined forecasting method based on equal weights (CFBEWs), the combined forecasting method based on neural networks (CFBNNs), and the combined forecasting method based on rough sets and the D-S theory (CFBRSDS) were also included in the empirical experiment. CFBSS obtains the highest forecasting accuracy and the second-best forecasting stability. The empirical results demonstrate the superior forecasting performance of our method in terms of accuracy and stability.

  • Given that time series are used in various fields, such as finance, IoT, and manufacturing, data analytical methods for accurate time-series forecasting can serve to increase operational efficiency. Among time-series analysis methods, multi-horizon forecasting provides a better understanding of data because it can extract meaningful statistics and other characteristics of the entire time-series. Furthermore, time-series data with exogenous information can be accurately predicted by using multi-horizon forecasting methods. However, traditional deep learning-based models for time-series do not account for the heterogeneity of inputs. We proposed an improved time-series predicting method, called the temporal fusion transformer method, which combines multi-horizon forecasting with interpretable insights into temporal dynamics. Various real-world data such as stock prices, fine dust concentrates and electricity consumption were considered in experiments. Experimental results showed that our temporal fusion transformer method has better time-series forecasting performance than existing models.

  • Wind power forecast is critical for efficient power system operation. However, wind power has high forecasting errors due to uncertainty caused by the climate change. These forecasting errors can have an adverse impact on the power system operation. In order to mitigate the issues caused by the wind power forecasting error, wind power curtailment and energy storage system (ESS) can be introduced in the power system. These methods can affect the economics of wind power resources. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the economics of the methods for mitigating the wind power forecasting error. This paper attempts to analyze the economics of wind power curtailment and ESS operation for mitigating wind power forecasting error. Numerical simulation results are presented to show the economic impact of wind power curtailment and ESS operation.
