  • This study aims at validating simulations of the forced and freely vibrating cylinders at Reynolds number of approximately 500 in order to identify the capability of the CFD code, and to establish the analysis process of the vortex-induced vibration (VIV). The direct numerical and large eddy simulations were employed to resolve the various length scales of the vortices, and the morphing technique was used to consider a motion of the circular cylinder. For the forced vibration case, both in- and anti-phase VIV processes were observed regarding the frequency ratio. Namely, when the frequency ratio approaches to unity, the synchronization/lock-in process occurs, leading to substantial increases in drag and lift coefficients. This is strongly linked with the switch in timing of the vortex formation, and this physical tendency is consistent with that of Blackburn and Henderson (J. Fluid Mech., 1999, 385, 255-286) as well as force coefficients. For the free oscillation case, the mass and damping ratio of 50.8 and 0.0024 were considered based on the study of Blackburn et al. (J. Fluid Struct., 2000, 15, 481-488) to allow the direct comparison of simulation results. The simulation results for a peak amplitude of the cylinder and a shedding mode are reasonably comparable to that of Blackburn et al. (2000). Consequently, based on aforementioned results, it can be concluded that numerical methods were successfully validated and the calculation procedure was well established for VIV analysis with reasonable results.

  • The performance of a torque converter can be expressed by the performance parameters such as flow radius and flow angle, on the mean flow path. The geometric analysis of the torque converter is required to determine these parameters for the modeling of the torque converter. In general, the blade shape is depicted by three dimensional data at the mid-surface of blade or those of the pressure and suction side. To generate three dimensional model of the blade using the data mentioned above, a consistent data format and a shape generation algorithm are required. This paper presents a useful consistent data format of the blades and an algorithm for the geometrical shape generation. By the geometric analysis program to which the shape generation algorithm is embedded, the variation of blade angles in rotating element analyzed. Then finally, the analyzed results of geometric profile of a blade are compared with those of the blade design principle, so called forced vortex theorem.

  • In order to establish the hydraulic design process of the torque converter, pump, turbine and stator were designed by reverse design method including one dimensional analysis, angular momentum distribution and forced vortex design. And the significance of evaluation of the circulation flow rate in torus of the torque converter was verified by numerical calculation if the combined blade rows of pump and turbine. It was confirmed that the computational method using interrow mixing model by Park and Cho was reliable to predict the flow-field and performance of the torque converter.

  • Experiments were carried out for a cubic cavity flow. Contrinuous shear stress is supplied by driven flow for high Reynolds number and three kinds of aspect ratios. Velocity vectors are obtained by PIV and they are used as velocity components for Poisson equation for pressure, Related boundary conditions and no-slip condition at solid wall and the linear velocity extrapolation on the upper side of cavity are well examined for the present study. For calculation of pressure resolution of grid is basically $40{\times}40$ and 2-dimensional uniform mesh using MSC staggered grid is adopted. The flow field within the cavity maintains a forced-vortex formation and almost of the shear stress from the driving inflow is transformed into rotating flow energy and the size of the distorted forced-vortex increases with increment of Reynolds number

  • The experimental investigations on the motion characteristics of a marine riser both in air and water were performed. The static deflections and natural frequencies of the riser in air including the effect of static offset, were obtained from the experiment. These results were compared with those of theoretical prediction by using a simple asymptotic formula. In order to investigate the nonlinear motion characteristics of the riser subject to nonlinear viscous drag and large displacement, the forced oscillation tests both in air and water were performed. In the forced oscillation tests in air, it was found that the transverse motion due to geometrical nonlinearity grows when the amplitude of in-line oscillation exceeds a certain critical value, say, order of 1-2 diameters. The planar motions of the riser in water due to vortex shedding and the geometrical nonlinearity were described. Some of these results were also compared with those of theoretical analysis, which uses a numerical perturbation technique based on the derived linear asymptotic solutions, and found to be generally in good agreement.

  • A numerical analysis of initial unsteady state flow and heat transfer in an enclosed cavity has been performed by the Modified QUICK Scheme. The stable QUICK Scheme which modified the coefficient always to be positive is included in this numerical analysis. The implicit method is applied to solve the unsteady state flow; between iterations the PISO (Pressure - Implicit with Splitting of Operators) algorithm is employed to correct and update the velocity and pressure fields on a staggered grid. The accuracy of the Modified QUICK Scheme is proved by applying fewer grid systems than those which Ghia et al. and Davis applied. The initial unsteady mixed convection in an enclosed cavity is analyzed using the above numerical procedure. This study focuses on the development of the large main vortex and secondary vortex in forced convection, the effects of the Rayleigh Number in natural convection and the relative direction of the forced and natural convection.

  • Although the geometry of circular cylinder is simple, the flow is complicate because of the flow separation and vortex shedding. In spite of many numerical and experimental researches, the flow around a circular cylinder has not been clarified even now. It has been known that the unsteady vortex shedding from a circular cylinder can vibrate and damage a structure. Lock-on phenomenon is very important in the flow around an oscillating circular cylinder. The lock-on phenomenon is that when the oscillation frequency of the circular cylinder is at or near the frequency of vortex shedding from a stationary cylinder, the vortex shedding synchronizes with the cylinder motion. This phenomenon can be recognized by the spectral analysis of the lift coefficient history. At the lock-on region the vortex is shedding by the modulated frequency to the body frequency. However, the vortex is shedding by the mixed frequencies of natural shedding and forced body frequency in the region of non-lock-on. In this paper, it was analyzed the relation between the frequency of rotary oscillating circular cylinder and the vortex shedding frequency.

  • Hydrodynamic characteristics of a bluff cylinder oscillating along transverse direction in steady flow were experimentally investigated at Reynolds number of $2{\times}10^5$. The effects of non-dimensional frequency, oscillating amplitude and Reynolds number on drag force, lift force and phase angle are studied. Vortex shedding mechanics is applied to explain the experimental results. The results show that explicit similarities exist for hydrodynamic characteristics of an oscillating cylinder in high and low Reynolds number within subcritical regime. Consequently, it is reasonable to utilize the test data at low Reynolds number to predict vortex induced vibration of risers in real sea state when the Reynolds numbers are in the same regime.

  • Flow characteristics within the three-dimensional square cavity are studied experimentally by adopting PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry). A new method for tracking the same particle pairs in the consecutive flow image is suggested resulting in more effective acquisition of the velocity vectors. Two methods for supplying the shearing stress within the cavity are developed by continuous moving belt and 2-dimensional plane Poiseuille flow. The effect of TGL vortex in the case of belt-moving flow is remarkable owing to the distribution of the kinetic energy in the spanwise direction. But, for the plane Poiseuille flow, velocity profiles similar to a forced vortex are obtained and its tendency increases with the Reynolds number.
