This research is conducted to investigate weldability characteristics with various welding conditions on the 4 lap spot welded joint of structural steel sheets in automobile. The relationship between the tensile-shear strength and the indentation depth has been investigated to evaluate the weldability and the optimum welding conditions. The welding current and the welding time have a greatly affect to the tensile-shear strength compared to the electrode force. It was found that the indentation depth has a relatively close relationship with the expulsion occurrence. The optimum welding conditions were proposed for the 4 lap spot welded joint.
Nano-indentation and nano-scratch tests were peformed to assess the mechanical and tribological properties of the coating on a commercially available thin-film magnetic recording disk. Surface topography and roughness of the disk was studied using atomic force microscopy. The hardness and elastic modulus data show a peak at an indentation depth equivalent to the thickness of carbon overcoat, indicating strong influence of the coatin $g_strate interaction and the coating surface roughness on the measurements. The variations of surface roughness data were analysed statistically based on the normal probability distribution theories and Weibull cumulative probability theories.es.
Adhesion force of nanomaterials such as nanoparticle, nanowire, and nanorods should be significantly considered for its mechanical applications. However, examination of the adhesion force is limited since it is technically challenging to carry out experiments with such small objects. Therefore, in this work, molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) was conducted to determine the adhesion force between a nanowire and a flat surface, which could not be readily assessed through experiments. The adhesion force of a cylindrical-shaped nanowire was assessed by performing MDS and applying an equation of Van der Waals interaction. Simulation was conducted in two steps: indentation of a spherical tip on the flat surface and indentation of a cylinder on the flat surface, because the purpose of the simulation was comparing the results of the simulation and calculation of the Van der Waals interaction equation. From the simulation, Hamaker constant used for the equation of Van der Waals interaction was determined to be 2.93 °ø 10?18 J. Using this constant, the adhesion force of the nanowire on the flat surface was readily estimated by calculating Van der Waals equation to be approximately 65~89 nN with respect to the diameter of the nanowire. Moreover, the adhesion force of the nanowire was determined to be 52~77 nN from the simulation It was observed that there was a slight discrepancy (approximately 15~25%) between the results of the simulation and the theoretical calculation. Thus, it was confirmed that the calculation of Van der Waals interaction could be utilized to assess the adhesion force of the nanowire.
This paper describes a damage accumulation mechanism in cross-ply CFRP laminates $[0_2/90_2]_{2S}$ subjected to out-of-plane loading. Drop-weight impact and static indentation tests were carried out, and induced damage was observed by ultrasonic C-scan and an optical microscope. Both tests gave essentially the same results for damage modes, sizes, and load-deformation history. First, a crack occurred in the bottom $0^{\circ}$ layer accompanying some delamination along the crack caused by bending stress. Then, transverse cracks occurred in the middle $90^{\circ}$ layer with decreasing contact force between the specimen and the indenter. Measured local strains near the impact point showed that the stress state changed from a bending dominant state to an in-plane tensile dominant state. A cohesive interface element was used to simulate the propagation of multiple delaminations and transverse cracks under static indentation. Two types of analytical models are considered, one with multiple delaminations and the other with both multiple delaminations and transverse cracks. The damage obtained for the model with only multiple delaminations was quite different from that obtained from the experiment. However, the results obtained from the model with both delaminations and transverse cracks well explain the characteristics of the damage obtained in the experiment. The existence of the transverse cracks is essential to form the characteristic impact damage.

Coating layers on a coated sheet steel frequently affect distributions of strain rate of sheets and deteriorate the frictional characteristics between sheets and tools in sheet metal forming. Thus, it is important to identify the deformation behavior of these coatings to ensure the success of the sheet forming operation. In this study, the technique using nano-indentation test, FE-simulation and Artificial Neural Network(ANN) were proposed to determine the power law stress-strain behavior of coating layer and the power law behavior of extracted coating layers was examined using FE-simulation of drawing and nano-indentation process. Also, deep drawing test was performed to estimate the formability and frictional characteristic of coated sheet, which was calculated using the linear relationship between drawing force and blank holding force obtained from the deep drawing test. FE-simulations of the drawing process were respectively carried out for single-behavior FE-model having one stress-strain behavior and for layer-behavior FE-model which consist of coating and substrate separately. The results of simulations showed that layer-behavior model can predict drawing forces with more accuracy in comparison with single-behavior model. Also, mean friction coefficients used in FE-simulation signify the value that can occur maximum drawing force in a drawing test.

In this paper, an efficient algorithm is established in order to estimate the plastic properties of power-law hardening bulk specimen materials with one simple spherical indentation impression test. This work is based on a new formulation of representative strain and, therefore, compare to the preceding approaches the fitting parameters are significantly reduced. Moreover, the new definition of representative strain endowed more physical meaning to the representative strain. In order to verify the reliability of the reverse analysis, we have studied a broad set of materials whose property ranges cover essentially all engineering metals and alloys. Based on the indentation force-displacement P-${\delta}$ curves obtained from numerical simulations, the characteristics of the indentation response and material elastoplastic properties are bridged via explicit functions. Next, through the procedure of reverse analysis the yield stress and power-law hardening exponent of bulk specimen materials can be determined. Finally, good agreement between the result from reverse analysis and initial input data from experiment can be observed.

This study deals with hardness evaluation for spot welding by using an instrumented indentation technique to improve the quality of the inspection methodology. First, an instrumented indentation test and a Rockwell hardness test were performed for normal and abnormal spot welding. The hardness to indentation force-displacement curve obtained using each of the tests was compared. Furthermore, an analysis was conducted using the hardness obtained by the instrumented indentation technique. A quality control standard based on reliability was this evaluated for spot welding.

In this paper, a study on low-velocity impact response of four different sandwich panels for the hybrid bodyshell and floor structure application of the Korean low floor bus vehicle was done. Square samples of 100mm sides were subjected low-velocity impact loading using an instrumented testing machine at six energy levels. Impact parameters like maximum force, time to maximum force, deflection at maximum force and absorbed energy were evaluated and compared for four different types of sandwich panels. The impact damage size and depth of the permanent indentation were measured by 3-Dimensional Scanner. Failure modes were studied by sectioning the specimens and observed under optical microscope. The impact test results show that sandwich panel with composite laminate facesheet could not observe damage mode of a permanent visible indentation after impact and has a good impact damage resistance in comparison with sandwich panel with metal aluminum facesheet.
We investigated the sintering and consolidation phenomena of silver nanoparticles under various thermal treatment conditions when they were patterned by a contact printing technique on polyimide substrate films. The sintering of metastable silver nanoparticles commenced at 180 $^{\circ}C$, where the point necks were formed at the contact points of the nanoparticles to reduce the overall surface area and the overall surface energy. As the temperature was increased up to 250 $^{\circ}C$, silver atoms diffused from the grain boundaries at the intersections and continued to deposit on the interior surface of the pores, thereby filling up the remaining space. When the consolidation temperature exceeded 270 $^{\circ}C$, the capillary force between the spherical silver particles and polyimide flat surface induced the permanent deformation of the polyimide films, leaving crater-shaped indentation marks. The bonding force between the patterned silver metal and polyimide substrate was greatly increased by the heat treatment temperature and the mechanical interlocking by the metal particle indentation.

Recently in the display industry, demands for high-luminance and resolution of display devices have been steadily increasing. Generally, micro linear patterns are applied to an optical film in order to improve its properties of light. However, these patterns are easily viewed to eyes and moire phenomenon can be occurred. Micro random patterns are proposed as a method to solve these problems, increasing light-luminance and light-diffusion. However, conventional pattern manufacturing technologies have long processing times and high costs making it difficult to apply to large area molds. In order to combat this issue, micro-random patterns are formed by using a roll to plate indentation method along with abrasive paper tools composed of AlSiO2, SiC, and diamond grains. Also, forming properties, such as size and fill-factor of random patterns, are analyzed depending on type, mesh of abrasive paper tools, and indentation forces.
