PURPOSE. Articulation paper mark size is widely accepted as an indicator of forceful tooth contacts. However, mark size is indicative of contact location and surface area only, and does not quantify occlusal force. The purpose of this study is to determine if a relationship exists between the size of paper marks and the percentage of force applied to the same tooth. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Thirty dentate female subjects intercuspated into articulation paper strips to mark occlusal contacts on their maxillary posterior teeth, followed by taking photographs. Then each subject made a multi-bite digital occlusal force percentage recording. The surface area of the largest and darkest articulation paper mark (n = 240 marks) in each quadrant (n = 60 quadrants) was calculated in photographic pixels, and compared with the force percentage present on the same tooth. RESULTS. Regression analysis shows a bi-variant fit of force % on tooth (P<.05). The correlation coefficient between the mark area and the percentage of force indicated a low positive correlation. The coefficient of determination showed a low causative relationship between mark area and force ($r^2$ = 0.067). The largest paper mark in each quadrant was matched with the most forceful tooth in that same quadrant only 38.3% of time. Only 6 2/3% of mark surface area could be explained by applied occlusal force, while most of the mark area results from other factors unrelated to the applied occlusal force. CONCLUSION. The findings of this study indicate that size of articulation paper mark is an unreliable indicator of applied occlusal force, to guide treatment occlusal adjustments.
Because the magnetic bearing supports levitating body without contact, wear, noise and vibration are very small comparing with mechanical bearings, it is very useful to high revolution machinery. In general, the magnetic attractive force function that is proportional to square of control current(x), and inversely proportional to square of an air gap(i) has been widely used. This paper proposed the new magnetic attractive force function that is proportional to cube of the control current, and inversely proportional to square of the air gap. The function was optimized to minimize the cost function that is the percentage of deviation about the change of a proportional constant(k), using the experimental data, ie, control currents and air gaps.
The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare the biomechanical properties of orthodontic rubber elastic materials. Latex bands, nylon-covered elastic threads and polyurethane-based elastic modules, delivering $205{\pm}10$ grams force at 30mm stretching state were selected and stored separately in 3 environments-air ($22{\pm}3^{\circ}C$), distilled water ($37{\pm}1^{\circ}C$), or natural saliva ($37{\pm}1^{\circ}C$). And, the amount of remaining force and permanent elongation of each sample were measured on Instron at interval of 1 hour, 6 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours, 1 week, and 2 weeks. So the data derived were analyzed statistically. The results were as follows: 1. Force decay and permanent elongation of all materials increased with time lapsed; elastic module, latex band and nylon-covered elastic thread in that order of the amount of force decay; elastic module, elastic thread, latex band in that order of the amount of permanent elongation. 2. Among environmental conditions, force decay and permanent elongation in natural saliva, most increased, and those in air, least increased. 3. There was a negative correlation between force decay and permanent elongation. 4. Force decay and permanent elongation were most affected by the material itself, time and environments in that order. 5. After 24 hours in saliva, the percentage of remaining force in elastic module was 51.9% (107.37grams); in latex band, 83.2%(172.62grams); in elastic thread, 85.0%(179.25grams). After 2 weeks in saliva, the percentage of remaining force in elastic module was 42.9%(88.75grams); in latex band, 74.5%(154.50grams); in elastic thread, 77.6%(163.75grams).
Objectives: This study compared the buckling resistance of 3 nickel-titanium (NiTi) retreatment file systems and the torque/force generated during retreatment. Materials and Methods: The buckling resistance was compared among the D-RaCe (DR2), HyFlex Remover, and Mtwo R25/05 retreatment systems. J-shaped canals within resin blocks were prepared with ProTaper NEXT X3 and obturated by the single-cone technique with AH Plus. After 4 weeks, 4 mm of gutta-percha in the coronal aspect was removed with Gates-Glidden drills. Retreatment was then performed using DR1 (size 30, 10% taper) followed by DR2 (size 25, 4% taper), HyFlex Remover (size 30, 7% taper), or Mtrwo R25/05 (size 25, 5% taper) (15 specimens in each group). Further apical preparation was performed with WaveOne Gold Primary. The clockwise torque and upward force generated during retreatment were recorded. After retreatment, resin blocks were examined using stereomicroscopy, and the percentage of residual filling material in the canal area was calculated. Data were analyzed using 1-way analysis of variance with the Tukey test. Results: The HyFlex Remover files exhibited the greatest buckling resistance (p < 0.05), followed by the Mtwo R25/05. The HyFlex Remover and Mtwo R25/05 files generated the highest maximum clockwise torque and upward force, respectively (p < 0.05). The DR1 and DR2 files generated the least upward force and torque (p < 0.05). The percentage of residual filling material after retreatment was not significantly different between file systems (p > 0.05). Conclusions: NiTi retreatment instruments with higher buckling resistance generated greater clockwise torque and upward force.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate whether the health status of Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) soldiers changed after one year of military service. Methods: We selected 483 ROKAF soldiers from the 11 749 recruits who participated in the 2011 physical examination. The selected soldiers underwent another physical examination in 2012 for advancement to senior airman. Data from 2011 and 2012 were merged. To collect data on lifestyle, a questionnaire was sent to all included subjects via the military intranet e-mail service. Results: The percentage of recruits with an abnormal alanine transaminase level (normal range <40 IU/L) decreased from recruitment (13.7%) to the following year (2.7%). Moreover, the percentage of obese soldiers (body mass index ${\geq}25kg/m^2$) decreased from recruitment (20.5%) to the following year (10.4%). There was a significant change in mean duration of exercise carried out each day before ($0.8{\pm}1.3$ hours) and after ($1.0{\pm}0.7$ hours) joining the ROKAF service. Conclusions: These ROKAF soldiers were generally in good health before and after joining the armed service. After one year of military service, the health status of most soldiers improved, especially with respect to body mass index and alanine transaminase level.
In this thesis, fracture test was performed in order to investigate the fracture strength of SFRC(steel fiber reinforced concrete) structures. The relationship between the compressive force and strain value of SFRC specimens were observed under the compressive strength test. From the fracture test results, the relationship between percentage of fiber by volume, compressive strength, elastic modulus, and tensile strength of SFRC beams were studied, and the measured elastic modulus of SFRC were compared with the calculated elastic modulus by ACI committee 544.
Generally, cutting force models use a sin function method to calculate chip thickness. In slot end milling, the error from a sin function method is much bigger than other machining because a tool rotation angle in cutting is much larger. Thus in this paper, a new method to calculate chip thickness was suggested and evaluated. In a new method, tool position data according to tool rotation are checked and stored so that it is possible correct chip thickness is calculated. Cutting force waveforms simulated from a sin function method and a new method and measured waveforms from experiments were compared and error percentages were obtained. Finally, a new method had good results for simulating cutting force in slot end milling.
This paper develops a methodology that can be used to quantify the assesment of power improvement effectiveness of corps level C4I system applied to integrated fire operation by adapting Schuzer's C2 theory. This paper first describes how C4I systers can enhance the battle outcome in three way. : (1) Enhanced unit probability of survival; (2) Enhanced unit's individual effectiveness; improved exchange ratios; (3) Improved task force allocations : increased percentage of assets that can be assigned to a given engagement These enhancements are then show to result from improved probability of detection through information sharing; improved survivability and lethality through battle force coordination; and enhanced force allocation and prepositioning through improved timeliness of information(more advanced warning). It demonstrates that well-designed C4I systems can be shown to represent a significant force multiplier on the outcome of the battle.
This study was performed to investigate the effect of root canal shaping techniques on the change of the shape of prepared root canal. 40 mesiobuccal canals of recently extracted mandibular 1st and 2nd molars were divided into 4 groups and shaped by step-down/balanced force technique, step-down/step-back technique, step-back technique and conventional technique respectively. The change of the shape of root canal was traced by superimposing the radiographs obtained before and after shaping of each root canal. The results were as follows. 1. By the experimented techniques except conventional technique, the root canals were more shaped in convex side of apical area and in concave side of most curved and coronal area than in the other sides(P<0.05). By conventional technique, the root canals were more shaped in convex side than in convave side from apex to orifice(P<0.05). 2. By step-down/balanced force technique, the cancave sides at C and D points of proximal view and C point of clinical view were more shaped than the convex side(P<0.05). Through the entire canal, the concave side was more shaped than the convex side in proximal view(P<0.01). But there was no statistical difference between both sides in clinical view. 3. By step-down/step-back technique, the change of root canal shape was not statistically different in concave and convex sides at each point of both views(P>0.05). And through the entire canal in proximal view, there was no statistical difference in shaping percentage between both sides. But through the entire canal in clinical view, the concave side was more shaped than the convex side(P<0.1). 4. By step-back technique, the convex side at B point of clinical more shaped than the other sides(P<0.05). Through the entire canal in proximal and clinical views, there was no statistical difference in shaping percentage between both sides. 5. Comparing the total shaping percentage among techniques, that in conventional technique was the greatest numerically, and followed by the percentages in step-down/step-back, step-down/balanced force and step-back technique. But, in proximal view, shaping percentages were not statistically different among techniques(P>0.05, ANOVA test). In clinical view, shaping percentages in step-back and conventional techniques were statistically different(P<0.01, ANOVA test). * Proximal view: radiograph taken in mesiodistal direction. * Clincal view: radiograph taken in faciolingual direction. A point : 1mm point from radiographic apex B point : center point between A and C points C point : most curved point of root canal D point : center point between C point and canal oriffice.
The purpose of this study was to develop a 3D mesh-type impact protection pad with excellent motion adaptability and functionality by applying 3D printing technology. The hexagonal 3D mesh, which constitutes the basic structure of the pad, comprises two types: small and large. The bridge connecting the basic units was designed as the I-type, V-type, IV-type, and VV-type. After evaluating the characteristics of the bridge, it was found that the V-type bridge had the highest flexibility and tensile elongation. The hip joint pad and knee pad were completed by combining the hexagonal 3D mesh structure with the optimal bridge design. The impact protection pad was printed using a fused deposition modeling-type 3D printer with a filament made of thermoplastic polyurethane material, and the protection pad's performance was evaluated. When an impact force of approximately 6,500N was applied to the pad, the force attenuation percentage was 78%, and when an impact force of approximately 8,000N was applied, the force attenuation percentage was 75%. Through these results, it was confirmed that the 3D-printed impact protection pad with a hexagonal 3D mesh structure connected by a V-shaped bridge developed in this study can adapt to changes in the body surface according to movement and provides excellent impact protection performance.
