Study of an Estimation Method of Thrust Measurement Uncertainty for the Solid Rocket Motors (고체 추진기관의 추력측정불확도 추정 방법 연구)

  • This study deals an estimation method of thrust measurement uncertainty in solid rocket motors. Guidelines of the force measurement uncertainty estimation have been provided by ISO, domestic and international organizations. However, all of them are described by focusing on the force calibration machines and force transducers with a conceptually-driven way. Thus the guidelines cannot be directly applicable to uncertainty estimation of calibration equation and its linear approximation, which are critical error sources in the thrust measurement. In this paper, the equations taking into account effects of both error sources are derived based on fundamental concepts of measurement uncertainty. These are applied to the real thrust measurement system where a relatively simple estimation method for the thrust measurement uncertainty is proposed.

  • The column-type sensing element in building and mechanical construction parts was designed as three forces and three moments sensor by attaching strain gages approximately. Compared to conventional multi-component sensor, the designed sensor can solve the problem about low stiffness and high cost. The radius of the column was designed analytically and compared with finite element analysis. The coupling errors between components were minimized by using addition and subtraction procedure of signals. The fabricated sensor was tested by using a deadweight force standard machine and a six-component force calibration machine in Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science(KRISS). The calibration showed that the multi-component force/moment sensor had coupling error less than 19.8 % between $F_x$ and $M_y$ components, and 9.0 % in case of other components.

  • The force transducer in the acceleration plant due to dynamic fracture is calibrated by dynamically using the stress pulses from a longitudinal bar. The bar is supported by two strings attached to the ceiling. The bar velocities before and after impact are measured and a full bridge at bar and transducer is formed by the four strain gauges. A transient recorder is used to store the stress pulse signals of force transducer and bar. For the first test series, three point bend test specimens can be chosen by means of test rig design and the inspection as sample experiment in this presented paper is sufficient for proving with the numerical simulation of the specimen model.

  • The present paper studies how to calibrate hydrometer using image process. The method aligns particular scales of hydrometer selected for calibrating the hydrometer with the horizontal plane of the reference liquid automatically without man's operation. Major parts composing the system are CCD camera, frame grabber, stepping motor and image process program. The image process program is composed of a part that locates the meniscus and aligns it with a scale and a part that controls the step motor. To verify the performance of the developed method, this study compares the meniscus and scale observed directly with the naked eye with the result of calibration by the manual calibration method. The differences between the corrections were less than $0.004\;kg/m^3$ with uncertainty of $0.06\;kg/m^3$. These showed that the calibration results of the developed hydrometer calibration using image process nearly equal to manual method.

On the Calibration of Impact Hammer Sensitivity (충격 해머의 感度補正)

  • The impact hammer is extensively used in experimental modal analysis as a means to provide force over a broad range of frequencies. The hammer mass and the impact head are often changed to achieve a desired impact time duration with its corresponding input frequency spectrum, these mass changes affect the performance and sensitivity of the force transducer employed to measure the impact force. Both a mathematical model describing the effects of impact head and hammer mass on the performance of the force transducer and experimental verification of this model are presented here.

  • This paper describes the build-up force measuring system of 9.9 MN capacity which consists of nine force transducers of each having 1.1 MN capacity. We have specially designed a force transducer for a build-up force measuring system to reduce the uncertainty of a build-up system and to accomodate the new test procedure for a build-up system. It reveals that the relative uncertainty of the force measuring system is less than 1.5*10$^{-4}$ in the ran9e of 1-4.5 MN irrespective of loading direction. The force measuring system may be used to calibrate a 10 MN force standard machine to be used as a large force standard in Korea.

  • Productivity and machining performance can be improved by cutting analysis including cutting force prediction, surface error prediction and machining stability evaluation. In order to perform cutting analysis, cutting force coefficients database have to be constructed. Since cutting force coefficients are dependent on cutting condition in the existing research, a large number of calibration tests are needed to obtain cutting force coefficients, which makes it difficult to build the cutting force coefficients database. This paper proposes a generalized method for constructing the cutting force coefficients database us ins cutting-condition-independent coefficients. The tool geometry and workpiece material were considered as important components for database construction. Cutting force coefficients were calculated and analyzed for various helix and rake angles as well as for several workpiece. Furthermore, the variation of cutting force coefficients according to tool wear was analyzed. Tool wear was found to affect tool geometry, which results in the change of cutting force coefficients.

  • In earthquake simulation tests of building structures, it is sometimes necessary to measure the shear forces in two orthogonal directions and axial force of a particular member. This study shows the manufacture and calibration of load cells for measuring 2-direction shears and uniaxial compression.
