We construct a solar eruption model with a background solar wind by performing three-dimensional zero-beta magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation. The initial configuration of a magnetic field is given by nonlinear force-free field (NLFFF) reconstruction applied to a flux emergence simulation. The background solar wind is driven by upflows imposed at the top boundary. We analyzed the temporal development of the Lorentz force at the flux tube axis. Based on the results, we demonstrate that a solar eruption is caused by the imbalance between magnetic pressure gradient force and magnetic tension force. We conclude that this imbalance is produced by a weak but continuously existing solar wind above an active region.
In this paper, wind force coefficient by wind tunnel experiment is obtained to compute the accurate wind force of the gantry crane model to be used for mobile harbor ship. The first crane model was tested under 20, 30, 40, 52m/s, partially 58m/s and the wind force coefficient is about 2.0 which is very close to the suggested theoretical value. The other is the more reliable crane model and tested under 20, 30, 40m/s also giving the similar realistic wind force coefficient. Also structural analysis of crane model was performed giving the reliable stress level. Since the rolling effect is important for mobile harbor ship, the safety of the crane on the ship needs to be guaranteed. For this, using the computed reaction forces, a tie-down design is suggested which connects the crane and ship to resist the turnover motion of the crane.
Wind-resistant design of existing cooling tower structures overlooks the impacts of rainfall. However, rainstorm will influence aerodynamic force on the tower surface directly. Under this circumstance, the structural response of the super-large cooling tower (SLCT) will become more complicated, and then the stability and safety of SLCT will receive significant impact. In this paper, surrounding wind fields of the world highest (210 m) cooling tower in Northwest China underthree typical wind velocities were simulated based on the wind-rain two-way coupling algorithm. Next, wind-rain coupling synchronous iteration calculations were conducted under 9 different wind speed-rainfall intensity combinations by adding the discrete phase model (DPM). On this basis, the influencing laws of different wind speed-rainfall intensity combinations on wind-driving rain, adhesive force of rain drops and rain pressure coefficients were discussed. The acting mechanisms of speed line, turbulence energy strength as well as running speed and trajectory of rain drops on structural surface in the wind-rain coupling field were disclosed. Moreover, the fitting formula of wind-rain coupling equivalent pressure coefficient of the cooling tower was proposed. A systematic contrast analysis on its 3D distribution pattern was carried out. Finally, coupling model of SLCT under different working conditions was constructed by combining the finite element method. Structural response, buckling stability and local stability of SLCT under different wind velocities and wind speed-rainfall intensity combinations were compared and analyzed. Major research conclusions can provide references to determine loads of similar SLCT accurately under extremely complicated working conditions.
The paper describes a study of the effects of structural coupling on the wind-induced response of twin tall buildings connected by a skybridge. Development of a dual high-frequency force balance used in wind tunnel investigation and background information on the methodology employed in analysis are presented. Comparisons of the wind-induced building response (rooftop acceleration) of structurally coupled and uncoupled twin buildings are provided and the influence of structural coupling is assessed. It is found that the adverse aerodynamic interference effects caused by close proximity of the buildings can be significantly reduced by the coupling. Neglecting of such interactions may lead to excessively conservative estimates of the wind-induced response of the buildings. The presented findings suggest that structural coupling should be included in wind-resistant design of twin tall buildings.
The paper is concerned with the numerical study of the cross-wind response of the 295 m-tall six-flue industrial chimney, located in the power station of Belchatow, Poland. The response of the chimney due to turbulent wind flow is caused by the lateral turbulence component and vortex excitation with taking into account motion-induced wind forces. The cross-wind response has been estimated by means of the random vibration approach. Three power spectral density functions suggested by Kaimal, Tieleman and Solari for the evaluation of the lateral turbulence component response are taken into account. The vortex excitation response has been calculated by means of the Vickery and Basu's model including some complements. Motion-induced wind forces acting on a vibrating chimney have been modeled as a nonlinear aerodynamic damping force. The influence of three components mentioned above on the total cross-wind response of the chimney has been investigated. Moreover, the influence of damping ratios, evaluated by Multi-mode Random Decrement Technique, and number of mode shapes of the chimney have been examined. Computer programmes have been developed to obtain responses of the chimney. The numerical results and their comparison are presented.
A self-climbing crane (SCC) system is under development for the installation and maintenance of wind turbines. It can move vertically along the wind turbine tower by itself. One of the key components of the SCC system is the clamping pad to maintain a safe position on the wind turbine tower. The SCC system can maintain its position on the tower from the frictional force generated between the surfaces of the clamping pads and the tower. If the frictional force provided by the clamping pads are insufficient, the SCC system cannot stay in the vertical position on the tower. Therefore, the development of clamping pads with sufficient frictional force is very important for the SCC system. At the same time, the operation of the SCC system should not damage the paint coating of the wind turbine tower. In order to verify that the frictional force is sufficient and that frictional and compressive forces do not cause damage to the paint, a number of combined compression and shear loading tests were conducted using a test device prepared for this study. The details regarding the test specimens, test procedure, and test results are summarized in this paper.
Numerical simulations are made to predict the axial force coefficients of a two-stage launch vehicle, and the results are compared with those by wind tunnel tests. It is found that the forebody axial force is not affected by whether the base of the body is modeled or not. Modeling the sting support used in wind tunnel tests reduced the base axial force compared to the results without it. The present calculation shows that the forebody axial forces are underestimated while the base axial forces are overestimated. The total axial force, therefore, compares with the experimental data with better accuracy by cancelling out the errors of opposite signs. Modeling of the sting support in numerical simulations is found to be necessary to get a better agreement with the experiments for both base and overall axial force coefficients.

Onshore wind turbines may experience substantially different wind loads depending on their working conditions, i.e. rotation velocity of rotor blades, incoming freestream wind velocity, pitch angle of rotor blades, and yaw angle of the wind-turbine tower. In the present study, aerodynamic loads acting on a horizontal axis wind turbine were accordingly quantified for the high tip speed ratio (TSR) at high yaw angles because these conditions have previously not been adequately addressed. This was analyzed experimentally on a small-scale wind-turbine model in a boundary layer wind tunnel. The wind-tunnel simulation of the neutrally stratified atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) developing above a flat terrain was generated using the Counihan approach. The ABL was simulated to achieve the conditions of a wind-turbine model operating in similar inflow conditions to those of a prototype wind turbine situated in the lower atmosphere, which is another important aspect of the present work. The ABL and wind-turbine simulation length scale factors were the same (S=300) in order to satisfy the Jensen similarity criterion. Aerodynamic loads experienced by the wind-turbine model subjected to the ABL simulation were studied based on the high frequency force balance (HFFB) measurements. Emphasis was put on the thrust force and the bending moment because these two load components have previously proven to be dominant compared to other load components. The results indicate several important findings. The loads were substantially higher for TSR=10 compared to TSR=5.6. In these conditions, a considerable load reduction was achieved by pitching the rotor blades. For the blade pitch angle at 90°, the loads were ten times lower than the loads of the rotating wind-turbine model. For the blade pitch angle at 12°, the loads were at 50% of the rotating wind-turbine model. The loads were reduced by up to 40% through the yawing of the wind-turbine model, which was observed both for the rotating and the parked wind-turbine model.
The quasi-steady approaches to simulate the wind induced vibrations of inclined cables, especially on the rain-wind induced vibration, have been tried by many researchers. However, the steady wind force coefficients used in those methods include only the effects of water rivulet, but not the axial flow effects. The problem is the direct application of the conventional techniques to the inclined cable aerodynamics. Therefore, in this study, the method to implement the axial flow effects in the quasi-steady theory is considered and its applicability to the inclined cable aerodynamics is investigated. Then, it becomes clear that the perforated splitter plate in the wake of non-yawed circular cylinder can include the effects of axial flow in the steady wind force coefficients for inclined cables to a certain extent. Using the lateral force coefficients measured in this study, the quasi-steady theory may explain the wind induced instabilities of the inclined cables only in the relatively high reduced wind velocity region. When the Scruton number is less than around 40, the high speed vortex-induced vibration occurs around the onset wind velocity region of the galloping, and then, the quasi-steady approach cannot be applied for estimating the response of wind-induced vibration of inclined cable.
Because suicide accidents sometimes were happened in grand bridges over rivers or sea water recently, it will be necessary that prevention measures be made preparation in advance from now on. Additional safety facilities must be needed in addition to existing safety facilities in such a way as this prevention measure. In order to make cable-stayed bridge safe on wind for additional safety facilities, main girder models with added safety facilities for wind-tunnel tests was made, and wind tunnel experiments was carried out to measure aerodynamic force coefficients. Also, wind-resistant analyses of 3D cable-stayed bridge were performed on the basis of wind-tunnel test results. From the wind experiments, force coefficients of main girder with added safety facilities were assessed, and it is known that there are little possibility of galloping and rotation of steel main girder. Finally, from the wind resistant analyses, it was concluded that wind-resistant safety of cable-stayed bridge was secured on wind speed 60.6m/sec.
