Ankle-foot orthosis with a pneumatic rubber actuator, which is intended for the assistance and the enhancement of ankle muscular activities was developed. In this study, the effectiveness of the system was investigated during plantarflexion motion of ankle joint. To find a effectiveness of the system, the subjects performed maximal voluntary isokinetic plantarflexion contraction on a Biodex-dynamometer. Plantarfexion torque of the ankle joint is assisted by subject's soleus muscle that is generated when ankle joint do plantarflexion motion. We used the muscular stiffness signal of a soleus muscle for feedback control of ankle-foot orthosis as physiological signal. For measurement of this signal, we made the muscular stiffness force sensor. We compared a muscular stiffness force of a soleus muscle between with feedback control and without it and a maximal plantarflexion torque between not wearing a ankle-foot orthosis, without feedback control wearing it and with feedback control wearing it in each ten elderly adults. The experimental result showed that a muscular stiffness force of a soleus muscle with feedback control was reduced and plantarflexion torque of an ankle joint only wearing ankle-foot orthosis was reduced but a plantarflexion torque with feedback control was increased. The amount of a increasing with feedback control is more higher than the amount of a decreasing only wearing it. Therefore, we confirmed the effectiveness of the developed ankle-foot orthosis with feedback control.
The torque characteristics of a surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) are analyzed in this study. The harmonics of the back electromotive force (EMF) and cogging torque are analyzed by the finite element method to study their effects on the torque ripple. Although low cogging torque can be achieved by varying geometric parameters such as the permanent magnet (PM) offset and notch depth on the stator teeth, the torque ripple is increased in some cases. The analysis results show that the ripple of the generated torque is determined by not only the amplitudes but also the phases of harmonics for the back EMF and cogging torque.
When the magnet wheel rotates over a conducting plate, it generates the traction torque as well as the repulsive force on the conducting plate. Partially-cut traction torque results in the linear force into the tangential direction. To cut the traction torque, the concept of magnetic shield is introduced. The direction change of the linear force is realized varying the shielded area of magnetic field. That is, the tangential direction of non-shielded open area becomes the direction of the linear thrust force. Specially a shape of permanent magnets composing the magnet wheel leads to various pattern of magnetic forces. So, to enlarge the resulting force density and compensate its servo property a few simulations are performed under various conditions such as repeated pattern, pole number, radial width of permanent magnets, including shape of open area. The theoretical model of the magnet wheel is derived using air-gap field analysis of linear induction motor, compared with test result and the sensitivity analysis for its parameter change is performed using common tool; MAXWELL. Using two-axial wheel set-up, the tracking motion is tested for a copper plate with its normal motion constrained and its result is given. In conclusion, it is estimated that the magnet wheel using partial shield can be applied to a noncontact conveyance of the conducting plate.
This article describes the analysis of stable grasping for multi-fingered robot. An analysis method of stable grasping, which is based on the three-dimensional acceleration convex polytope, is proposed. This method is derived from combining dynamic equations governing object motion and robot motion, force relationship and acceleration relationship between robot fingers and object's gravity center through contact condition, and constraint equations for satisfying no-slip conditions at every contact points. After mapping no-slip condition to torque space, we derived intersected region of given torque bounds and the mapped region in torque space so that the intersected region in torque space guarantees no excessive torque as well as no-slip at the contact points. The intersected region in torque space is mapped to an acceleration convex polytope corresponding to the maximum acceleration boundaries which can be exerted by the robot fingers under the given individual bounds of each joints torque and without causing slip at the contacts. As will be shown through the analysis and examples, the stable grasping depends on the joint driving torque limits, the posture and the mass of robot fingers, the configuration and the mass of an object, the grasp position, the friction coefficients between the object surface and finger end-effectors.

This paper suggests the new type of a joint torque sensor which is attached at each joint of a manipulator for making compliance. Previous six axis force/torque sensors are high cost and installed end-effector of the manipulator. However, torque on links of previous an end-effector cannot be measured. We design a joint torque sensor that can be fully integrated with an actuator in order to measure applying torque of the manipulator. The sensor system is designed through the structural analysis. The proposed joint torque sensors are installed to the 6 DOF manipulator of a mobile robot for hazardous works and we implemented experiments of measuring applied torque to the manipulator. By the experiment, we proved that the proposed low-cost joint torque sensor gives acceptable performance when we control a manipulator.
The coke oven plant on a steel works has not, in the past, been regarded as a prime user of modern instrument technology. The reason for this perception may be due to the fact that the basic design of the coke battery has been changed little over the years. The recording and analysis of oven pushing force on a routine basis is seen as a means of monitoring plant operation. A torque sensor is set up at the shaft of the rotor for measuring pushing force. Pushing force data which is communicated form torque sensor to staor by telemetry method are shown on MMI(Man-Machine Interface) screen and stored in the database automatically. Perhaps the most important feature is that is allows a problem oven to be identified at an early stage and for corrective action to be taken before it develops into a refusal to push. In this way the mechanical loads imposed on the battery structlure can be held to a necessary minimum, so helping to prolong its service life.
Electric machines such as motors which have moving parts are desgined for producing mechanical force or torque. The accurate calculation of electromagnetic force and torque is important in the design these machines, Electromagnetic force calculation method using the results of Finite Element Method(FEM) has been presented variously in 2-D problems. Typically the Maxwell's Stress Tensor method and the method of virtual work are used. In the problems including current source, magnetic vector potentials(MVP) have mostly been used as an unknown variables for field analysis by numerical method; e, g. FEM. This paper, thus, introduces both methods using MVP in 3-D case. To verify the usefulness of presented methods, a solenoid model is chosen and analyzed by 3-D and axisymmetrical FEM. In each case, the calculated force are tabulated for several mesh schemes.
This paper presents an experimental study and numerical thermal deformation analysis in the home appliance, Video Cassette Recorder. Analyzing the change axial force of a set screw according to the change of temperature in the drum assembly, we can determine the initial torque in tightening set screw. The torque will have the preload boss not be separated from the bearing. Also we conduct the fundamental experiment to constitute a boundary condition of the numerical analysis. With the result of this study, we can change the material of preload boss, copper, for aluminum.
It is known that residual aligning torque of tires causes vehicle pull. There is, however, only a little literature available which shows how the residual aligning torque of tires causes vehicle pull. In this paper, a vehicle model in two degrees of freedom was adopted for the analysis of a vehicle under the straight-ahead motion. The analysis with this vehicle model clearly shows the effect of residual aligning torque of tires on vehicle pull. In order to show the validity of the analysis, a vehicle commercially available was selected. This vehicle was modeled in 137 degrees of freedom system with multibody dynamics software. Vehicle pull simulation results show that vehicle model drifts in lateral direction due to the residual aligning torque of tires. Vehicle test results with the car were also included.
As a main part of an utility helicopter, the APU(Auxiliary Power Unit) has a solenoid valve system operated with a torque motor, which controls the flow rate in the fuel supply system. In this paper, we solved the Maxwell potential equations to analyze the electromagnetic force in the torque motor, and some additional analytic methods are used to compute the quantity of torque produced by the torque motor for the given circuit current. For the convenience, small displacement is assumed, and only magneto-static problem is considered for the two-dimensional cross section. The result will be compared with the three-dimensional analysis that will be studied in the near future.
