Paleoceanographic history of the East Sea is reconstructed based on several environmental parameters (coarse fraction content, planktonic foraminifera/benthic foraminifera ratio, fragmentation and assemblages of planktonic foraminifera, and coiling ratio of Neogloboquadrina pa-chyderma, etc,) of the late Quaternary sediments obtained from the Ulleung Basin. N. pa-chydeyma and Globigerina bulloides are dominant species (greater than 90% in abundance)among the total planktonic foraminifera assemblages in the late Quaternary sediments. The benthic foraminifera rarely occurred throughout the cores. Sinistrally-coiled specimens of N. pa-chyderma representing cold water temperature are observed more abundantly than dextrally-coil-ed ones. In addition, the sinistrally-coiled N, pachydeyma showed more the amount at the lower part of the cores than at the upper part suggesting the restriction of the Tsushima Warm Current into the East Sea during glacial period. G. bulloides, a species representative of upwelling condition, shows more abundant occurrence in the sediments of Core 941013 than those of Core 941006. This implies that Core 941013 is more influenced by upwelling than Core 941006. The upper part of the two cores contain more fragmentation of planktonic foraminifera suggesting significant dissolution by corrosive bottom wafer. Ascending CCD also played an important role for the absence of planktonic foraminifera at the upper part of the cores.

A time-series sediment trap was operated at a water depth of 4950 m from July 2003 to May 2004 at KOMO station ($10^{\circ}30^{\prime}N$, $131^{\circ}20^{\prime}W$) in the northeastern equatorial Pacific, with the aim of understanding the temporal variation of planktonic foraminifera assemblages in response to the seasonal shift of Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). A total of 22130 planktonic foraminifera specimens belonging to 30 species and 11 genera were identified, which shows a distinct seasonal variation with high values (125~288 specimens $m^{-2}day^{-1}$) in the winter to spring (December-May) and low values (16~23 specimens $m^{-2}day^{-1}$) in the fall (September-November). In addition, seasonal ecological differences of foraminifera assemblages are distinctly recognizable: omnivorous foraminifera occurred predominantly during the summer season, whereas herbivorous ones were dominant during the winter season. Such seasonal variations correspond to the seasonal shift of the ITCZ. Enhanced occurrence of herbivorous species during the winter-spring season seems a result of surface water mixing generated by the southward shift of the ITCZ. The increase in omnivorous species during the summer season may be due to the northward movement of the ITCZ caused by weakened wind speed, resulting in the intensification of water column stratification and nutrient-poor environment. A significant reduction of planktonic foraminifera specimens during the fall is attributed to heavy precipitation and reduction in light intensity.
The ostracode foraminifera microbiogenic sediments of the Nagdon Estuary, which is a deltaic, have been analysed. Twenty four species representing seventeen genera of ostracodes and some species representing twenty three genera of foraminifera are identified and counted. From these data their geographical distribution patterns aree obtained and biotopes are determined in relation to the sediment distribution and hydrological parameters. There are several tendencies in the distribution of ostracodes and foraminifera. Both ostracode and foraminiferall population increased seaward. The ratio of foraminiferal population to the sum of the ostracode and the foraminiferal population, as well as the ratio of calcareous foraminifera to the sum of calcareous and agglutinated foraminiferal population, also increased seaward. The biotopes can be divided into two. Biotope I is the innershore environment and Biotope II offshore environment.
Foraminifera are protists that inhabit diverse marine environments and show high abundance and diversity. However, previous studies on foraminifera in Korea mostly focused on geological and paleoecological fields and were conducted in a limited area. Therefore, there is a high possibility for discovering new and unrecorded species. Here we describe three newly recorded foraminiferal species from the southwestern part of Jeju Island during a survey on the meiofaunal community, which belongs to three different genera (Ammobaculites, Cylindroclavulina, Saracenaria), three families (Lituolidae, Vaginulinidae, Valvulinidae), and three orders (Lituolida, Textulariida, Vaginulinida): Ammobaculites formosensis Nakamura, 1937, Cylindroclavulina bradyi (Cushman, 1911), and Saracenaria hannoverana (Franke, 1936). These species have been reported from Chinese region in the East China Sea, however this is the first report from Korean waters. Particularly, Cylindroclavulina bradyi is the first report of the genus Cylindroclavulina in Korean waters. The present study supports the diversity of foraminiferal species in Korea, and the necessity of further surveys in Korean waters.
Sediment samples from five stations at the Shihwa Lake sewage outfall, west coast of Korea, were collected to evaluate the effect of the outfall on benthic foraminifera. Heavy metal (Cu and Zn) polluted eastern part of the Shihwa Lake, adjacent to the Shihwa-Banwol Industrial Complexes, shows barren or nearly barren of benthic foraminifera, and the lowest number of species both at the core top and downcore. Excepting for the barren zone, pyritized benthic foraminifera abundantly occur both at the surface and downcore sediments in the western part of the Shihwa Lake, suggesting that foraminiferal disease by anoxic bacteria. Recent intrusion of pollutants from the Shihwa-Banwol Industrial Complexes and adjacent six major streams severely polluted the Shihwa Lake as shown by the low abundance (number/10 g) of benthic foraminifera, low number of A. beccarii, low species diversity, and absence of both Elphidium spp. and ostracodes at the surface sediments compared to the downcore. Except the barren zone, both pyritized and non-pyritized Ammonia beccarii occur dominantly in the surface sediments and downcore. Elphidium spp. (either pyritized or non-pyritized) do not occur in the surface sediments of whole stations. However, they occur from the entire downcore sediments except in the eastern part of Shihwa Lake. Arenaceous foraminifera do not inhabit in the heavily polluted areas as evidenced by the occurrence of relatively deep core depth (11-50 cm). Ostracodes occur at the downcore sediments, but they do not occur at the surface sediments. Ostracodes also do not occur at the heavily polluted areas in the eastern part of the Shihwa Lake both at the surface and downcore sediments, indicating that the abundance of ostracodes also can be used for a pollution indicator.
The effect of the relative abundances of planktonic foraminifera juveniles on the climatic and oceanographic history interpretations is documented for the first time (as far as we know) by use of the year-long time-series sediment trap samples. Statistical correlation analysis suggests that many climatic and oceanographic variables such as sinking flux (total number) of planktonic foraminifera, relative abundance of some climatic indicator species G. bulloides and N. dutertrei, temperature, and salinity do not show any significant correlations with the relative abundance of planktonic foraminifera juveniles. However, planktonic foraminifera juveniles show moderate correlations with species diversity indices (species richness, Shannon-Wiener index, and Equitability). These indicate that the juveniles do not affect the relative abundances(%) of species compositions but affect the species diversity indices. Based on this one-year trap result, special care is required when we use species diversity indices for the interpretations of paleoceanography when the juveniles are excluded from total planktonic foraminiferal countings.
Six surface sediments from two offshore transects of Ulsan and Gampo, on the southeastern margin of Korea were taken for sediment and foraminiferal analyses. Sedimentary processes are dominated by reworking and resedimentation from storms in the area off Ulsan and hemipelagic suspension settling in the area off Gampo. Eighty-four foraminiferal species were identified in total assemblages, including 33species of living populations and 9 species of planktonic foraminifera. The characteristics of foraminifera showed differences of offshore environments between Ulsan and Gampo. The number of living species, species diversity and equitability in Gampo offshore area had higher values than those in Ulsan offshore area. However, planktonic/benthic(P/B) ratio showed higher in the Ulsan offshore area. The species diversity indices and P/B ratio indicated that environmental stability and surface-ocean productivity in the Gampo offshore area were relatively higher than the Ulsan offshore area. The difference of species compositions is useful for interpreting the paleoenvironments in mud deposits of the southeastern margin of Korea.
The most usually adopted methods from the collection of samples laboratory procedures, to basic analysis of assemblages for the quantitative study of benthic foraminifera are reviewed. Standard methods of treatment of sampleswith emphasis on the effective detection of contamination through routine dip of sieved into Methylene Blue solution after every washing of samples are proposed to minimize differences due to individuals and for comparisons of results in future. Some basic characteristics for the quantitative analyses are also reviewed with appropriate examples. These characteristics are related to toraminiferal abundance, wall structures, condition of test conservation, diversity and related characteristics, faunal similarith between samples, and occurrence of planktonic foraminifera.
Foraminiferal assemblages from shell beds of Jindo Island indicate shallow water accumulation under warm to temperate condition near the mouth of a small estuary. 11 species of benthonic Foraminifera belonging to 10 genus have been extracted from 12 samples. Cavarotalia annectens dominates, accounting for 57 to 90 percent of the total fauna. The foraminiferal assemblages of the shell beds indicates Post-glacial sedimentation.
In this study, we briefly describe five newly recorded foraminiferal species from off the southern coast of Jeju Island: Ammolagena clavata, Neoeponides bradyi, Nodosaria lamnulifera, Rhabdammina abyssorum, and Uvigerina schwageri. Ammolagena clavata and Rhabdammina abyssorum are the first reports of the genera Ammolagena and Rhabdammina in Korea. In addition, R. abyssorum is reported from a depth of 103 m, which is a relatively shallow record within the distribution depth range for this agglutinated deep-sea species. Ammolagena clavata also shows interesting characteristics that the test usually attaches to substrates including shell fragments, sediment particles, or other foraminiferal tests. All other three species have typical calcareous and hyaline tests. The present report on unrecorded species improves the understanding of foraminiferal species diversity in Korean waters and confirms the need for the further research on foraminifera in the adjacent seas of Korea.
