Development of tetraploid rye (Secale cereale L.) cultivar in Korea

  • Rye is cultivated on about 30,000ha domestically for forage and green-manure production in Korea. 'Daegokgreen' has been developed as a good quality rye cultivar for forage and green-manure, which was doubled-chromosome by colchicine treatment of diploid rye cultivar 'Gogu' in 2010. By the colchicine treatment with 0.05% for 12 hours at $2^{nd}$ leaf stage of 'Gogu', 31 tetraploid plants were obtained and they produced 2,470 seeds with 135 spikes. There was 4.4 in the number of spikes per plant, 18.3 in grain number per spike, and 37.6 g in the1,000-grain weight. The heading date of 'Daegokgreen' was April 11, which was two days later on average compared with 'Gogu'. The biomass (fresh weight) of 'Daegokgreen' was 3,701kg, which was similar to 'Gogu'. The average crude protein content of 'Daegokgreen' was 8.9%, which was 1.0% point higher than 'Gogu'. 'Daegokgreen' was found to be strong resistant to winter-kill and can be adapted to before maize cultivation.

Effects of Ensiling Period and Bacterial Inoculants on Chemical Compositions and Fermentation Characteristics of Rye Silage

  • The present study was aimed to estimate the effect of ensiling period and bacterial inoculants on chemical compositions and fermentation characteristics on rye silage harvested at delayed stage. Rye (Secale cereale L.) was harvested after 20 days of heading stage (29.4% dry matter, DM). The harvested rye forage was applied with different inoculants following: applications of distilled water (CON), Lactobacillus brevis (LBB), Leuconostoc holzapfelii (LCH), or mixture of LBB and LCH at 1:1 ratio (MIX). Each forage was ensiled into 20 L mini bucket silo (5 kg) for 50 (E50D) and 100 (E100D) days in triplicates. The E50D silages had higher in vitro digestibilities of DM (IVDMD, p<0.001) and neutral detergent fiber (IVNDFD, p=0.013), and lactate (p=0.009), and acetate (p=0.011) than those of E100D, but lower pH, lactic acid bacteria (LAB), and yeast. By inoculant application, LCH had highest IVDMD and IVNDFD (p<0.05), while MIX had highest lactate and lowest pH (p<0.05). The CON and LCH in E50D had highest LAB and yeast (p<0.05), whereas LBB in E100D had lowest (p<0.05). Therefore, this study concluded that LCH application improved the nutrient digesbility (IVDMD and IVNDFD) of lignified rye silage, and longer ensiling period for 100 days enhanced the fermentation characteristics of silage compared to ensiling for 50 days.

Effects of Maturity at Harvest and Wilting Days on Quality of Round Baled Rye Silage

  • A study was conducted to determine the effects of maturity at harvest and wilting days on the quality of round baled rye (Secale cereale L.) silage. This study was a $3{\times}3$ factorial arrangement in a split plot design with 3 replicates. The main plot was 3 harvesting dates at the stage of boot (20 Apr.), heading (29 Apr.) and flowering (14 May). The subplot was wilting day : 0 (unwilted), 0.5 and 1 day (0, 1, and 2 days at boot stage). Acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) contents of rye silage were significantly greater than those of rye before ensiling, but crude protein (CP) content and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) were vice versa. Buffering capacity (BC) of rye harvested at flowering stage was decreased from 264 to 202 meq/kg at 1 day wilting, however, it was increased when harvested at boot or heading stage. The pH in wilted silage was the highest while that of flowering stage was the lowest. Water soluble carbohydrate (WSC) content of wilting rye was lower than that of unwilted, and the lowest at late harvesting stage. All plots had minimal WSC content for silage fermentation. Wilting treatment and delayed harvesting date caused an increase in dry matter (DM) content of round bale silage. The content of ammonia-N expressed as a portion of total N showed negative correlation with DM content. High quality silage according to ammonia-N content could be obtained from mid-harvest with wilting. There were highly significant differences in each organic acid between harvesting dates and wilting periods. Acetic and butyric acid contents were increased with delayed harvesting and prolonged wilting period, the lactic acid content, however, was decreased. This study demonstrated that harvest of rye from heading to flowering stage with wilting would be a recommendable method for making high quality rye silage using round bale system.

조숙 다수 내재해성 호밀 품종 "참그린" (A Rye Cultivar "Charmgreen", Early-heading, High Forage Yield Potential, and Resistance to Stresses)

  • "Chamgreen" was a domestically developed rye (Secale cereal L.) cultivar in South Korea, known for its quick heading, cold resistance, and abundant yield of forage. The heading date of cv. 'Chamgreen' averaged April 17th, which was 4 days earlier than the standard cv. 'Gogu'. In the early harvesting stage, the plant height reached an average of 119 cm, 7 cm taller than the standard cv. 'Gogu', and the number of spikes per m2 was 865, slightly less than cv. 'Gogu's 897. Resistance to cold and powdery mildow remained consistent across four regions nationwide over three years, with an average rating of 0, matching cv. 'Gogu'. Lodging resistance was also rated at 2, equivalent to cv. 'Gogu'. The dry matter yield of cv. 'Chamgreen' was 9.1 tons per hectare, 15% higher than cv. 'Gogu's 7.9 tons. Although the protein content in cv. 'Chamgreen' was 13.5%, 1.6% lower than cv. 'Gogu', the total digestible nutrients (TDN) content was 5.81 tons per hectare, 20% higher than cv. 'Gogu'. Due to its strong cold resistance, cv. 'Chamgreen' allows for winter cultivation through double cropping and rotation systems in various regions across the country.

  • In order to compare the forage value and to promote the growth without the hindrance of rice transplanting period for several forage crops as prior crops of paddy field, this experiment was conducted. Three kinds of foliar application, such solution as Urea, Gibb. and Gibb. +Urea were applied to promote the growth. The results gained are summarized as follows; 1. According to the forage crops, there were large difference of yields. The rankings of yield were shown as follows; Fresh weightㆍDry weight : Oats. Italian rye grass. White clover. Corn. Soybean. Crude protein content: Soybean. White clover. Corn. Italian rye grass. Oats. Crude protein Yield: White clover. Italian rye grass. Oats. Corn. Soybean. 2. The ranking of suitable forage crops as prior crops of paddy field were Oats, Italian rye grass, White clover, but Corn and Soybean were unsuited. 3. In general, length of stem, length and width of leaf were enlarged such rank as foliar application of Urea, Gibb. and Gibb. + Urea solution. There were apt to be increased fresh and dry weight by growth of stem length, these trend were shown among all crops and between foliar applications of same crops. 4. All crops were shown not only promoted growth but also increased yield by every treatments. The order of application effects were as follows; Fresh weigthㆍDry weigth: Gibb., Gibb. +Urea, Urea. Crude protein content and yield: Urea, Gibb, Gibb. + Urea. 5. In Oats, heading date was more accelerated 1, 2 and 3 days than control by foliar application of Urea, Gibb. and Gibb. + Urea respectively.

Effect of Tedding Time and Frequency on the Feed Value and Drying Rate of Rye(Secale cereale L.) Hay

  • Hay-making is one of the most common way for forage preservation in livestock industry. The quality and production of hay could be affected by various factors. This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of tedding time and frequency on drying rate and feed value of forage rye (Secale cereale L.) hay. Rye was harvested on heading stage using mower conditioner. Hay was tedded at each set hour(09:00, 13:00 and 17:00) and sampled at each set hour to determine dry matter (DM) content. After two months' preservation, CP (crude protein), ADF (acid detergent fiber), NDF (neutral detergent fiber), IVDMD (in vitro dry matter digestibility), TDN (total digestible nutrient), RFV (relative feed value), DM loss, visual scores and total fungi count were determined for estimation of hay quality. Tedding was necessary for both speeding up drying rate and improving forage quality. Tedding at 17:00 showed lower NDF content (p<0.05), and also higher RFV value was found compared with tedding at 9:00 and 13:00 (p<0.05). On the other hand, it was observed that more DM losses would be found when tedding later (p<0.05). Tedding in 1~3 times per day were lower in ADF and NDF content (p<0.05), increased CP, TDN and RFV (p<0.05), got less DM loss (p<0.05), and contained less fungi during conservation compared with no tedding (p<0.05). On the other hand, tedding too frequent caused more DM loss (p<0.05). In conclusion, for shorter drying process and higher quality of forage rye hay, tedding at 13:00~17:00 for 1~2 times per day was recommended in this study.

경운방법 및 비료종류가 호밀의 사초수량, 품질 및 생산비에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Tillage System and Fertilizer Type on the Forage Yield, Quality, and Production Cost of Winter Rye)

  • 밭에서 호밀에 경운방법과 비료종류를 달리하였을 때 사초의 생산성, 품질 및 생산비를 비교하기 위하여 수행하였다. 본 시험은 2×2=4요인 시험으로 경운방법은 경운과 무경운을 두었으며, 비료종류는 화학비료와 퇴비를 두었다. 호밀의 건물률, TDN 수량 및 CP 수량은 처리간에 유의적인 차이가 없었으나, 경운의 건물수량은 무경운보다 많았다(P<0.01). 한편 비료종류에서는 화학비료의 건물수량, TDN 수량 및 CP 수량이 퇴비보다 많았다. 호밀의 조단백질 함량은 무경운이 경운보다 높았으나((P<0.05), 비료의 종류에서는 처리간에 유의적인 차이가 없었다. 호밀의 NDF, ADF 및 TDN 함량은 처리간에 유의적인 차이가 없었다. 호밀의 면적당 생산비는 경운이 무경운보다 많았으나, 원물, 건물 및 TDN 1kg당 생산비는 무경운이 많았다. 한편 비료의 종류에서는 화학비료의 면적당 생산비가 퇴비보다 많았으나 원물, 건물 및 TDN 1kg당 생산비는 화학비료가 적었다. 이는 경운과 화학비료가 무경운과 퇴비보다 사초수량이 많았기 때문이다. 이상의 시험결과를 볼 때 경운방법과 비료종류는 호밀의 품질보다 사초수량에 많은 영향을 미쳤다. 경운과 화학비료가 무경운과 퇴비보다 호밀의 1kg당 생산비가 적었는데 이는 경운과 화학비료의 사초수량이 다른 처리구보다 많았기 때문이다.

Effect of Location, Year and Variety on Winter Cereal Forage Yield and Quality in the Southern Plateau of the Spain

  • The objective of this research was to study the production and quality of forage at three different times of the year (April, June and July) of six winter cereals in the southern plateau of the Iberian Peninsula. The cereals studied were Triticale (xTriticosecale wittm) cv. "Tritano", Oat (Avena sativa L.) cv. "Prevision" and cv. "Saia; Rye (Secale cereale L.) cv. "Giganton", Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cv. "Cameo" and cv. "Albacete". The study was carried out in three different locations and over three successive years of harvesting. The three variables considered were location, year and cereal. The % dry matter (DM), % crude protein (CP), % acid detergent fiber (ADF), % neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and % ash content were determined for the three sampling periods and the quality was calculated in milk forage units (MFU/kg DM), the production in kg DM/ha, MFU/ha and kg CP/ha. In all three sampling periods the quality of the cereals was significantly influenced only by the year and by species. However, for production of dry matter (kg DM/ha), milk forage units (MFU/ha) and gross protein (kg CP/ha) all three variables were of significant influence as were their interactions. In the April sampling, the species which showed a significantly higher production ($p{\leq}0.05$) was rye (1,693 kg DM/ha), which, along with its forage quality (16.56% CP, 0.886 MFU/kg DM) meant that the same occurred in MFU/ha and kg CP/ha. Significant differences between species were also found for the June sampling. The most productive cereal was again rye with 2,656 kg DM/ha, although its sharp fall in forage quality meant that barley cv Albacete (2,513 kg DM/ha) returned the highest production in forage units (1,934 vs. 1,951 MFU/ha) and barley cv. Cameo (2,413 kg DM/ha) in gross protein production (242 vs. 264 kg CP/ha). The significantly highest cereal production for July was barley cv. Albacete (4,923 kg DM/ha, 9.11% CP 0.722 MFU/kg DM). As a consequence of the results, we conclude that from the viewpoint of nutritional quality and production, rye is the most suitable for use in early spring in whatever year and location. However, barley cv. "Albacete" is the most appropriate for utilisation in later spring or early summer.

사료맥류의 생육단계별 수량 및 품질 변화 (Changes in Quantity and Quality of Winter Cereal Crops for Forage at Different Growing Stages)

  • 본 연구는 사료맥류의 최적 수확시기를 검토하기 위하여 맥종별(청보리, 호밀, 귀리, 트리티케일 및 총체밀) 수확시기(출수기, 출수 후 10, 20 및 30일)에 따른 건물수량과 사일리지의 품질을 검토하였다. 건물수량은 모든 맥종에서 출수 후 생육기간이 진행됨에 따라 증가되는 추세를 보였는데, 청보리와 총체밀의 경우 출수 후 20일에 가장 높게 나타났고, 귀리와 트리티케일은 출수 후 30일 가장 높게 나타났다. 화학성분은 생육기간이 길어짐에 따라 유의한 차이를 보였는데 청보리, 총체밀, 트리티케일 및 귀리는 조단백질과 NDF 및 ADF 함량이 모두 감소하였으며, 호밀의 경우 조단백질 함량은 감소하였으나 ADF와 NDF 함량은 증가하였다. TDN 함량과 RFV는 청보리의 경우 출수 후 20일에 가장 높게 나타났고, 총체밀, 트리티케일, 귀리는 출수 후 30일, 호밀은 출수기에 가장 높게 나타났으며, 생육단계별로 제조한 사일리지에서도 같은 경향이었다. 맥종별 사료가치로서 평균 TDN 함량은 보리가 66.98%로 가장 높게 나타났고, 다음으로 총체밀, 트리티케일, 귀리, 호밀 순이었다.

대전지역에서 호밀과 헤어리베치의 파종유형벌 사초의 건물수량 및 사료가치 비교연구 (A Comparative Study on the Dry Matter Yield and Nutritive Value from Rye and Hairy Vetch Seeding Types in Daejeon Area)

  • 본 시험은 2002년 9월부터 2004년 12월까지 충남대학교 농업생명과학대학 내 부속 초지시험포장에서 수행하였다. 공시초종은 청예웅 호밀(Koolgrazer)과 헤어리베치(Common)를 공시하여 주구로 호밀 단파, 호밀 80%+헤어리베치 20% 혼파, 호밀 60%+헤어리베치 40%혼파 및 헤어리베치 단파 등의 4 파종유형과 세구로 수잉기, 출수기, 개화기 및 유숙기 등의 4 수확시기를 두어 분할구배치법 3반복으로 시험하였으며, 얻어진 결과는 다음과 같다. 2년 평f ha당 건물수량은 파종유형과 수확시기에 따라 차이를 보여, 호밀 단파구(9,776kg)가 호밀 80%+헤어리베치 20% 혼파구(9,045kg)나 호밀 60%+헤어리베치 40% 혼파구(8,272kg) 및 헤어리베치 단파구(5,424kg)에 비하여 높은 결과를 나타내었고, 모든 처리구에서 수확시기가 진행됨에 따라 유의적으로 증가되었다(p<0.01). 화학적 성분도 파종유형과 수확시기에 따라 차이를 보여, CP 함량과 DMD는 헤어리베치 단파구에서 높았던 반면에 섬유소물질의 함량은 가장 낮았으나, 호밀 단파구에서는 상반되는 결과를 보였다(p<0.01). 조단백질수량(CPDM)과 가소화건물(DDM)수량은 호밀 80%+헤어리베치 20% 혼파하여 개화기${\sim}$유숙기에 수확하는 것이 가장 높았다.(p<0.01). 이상의 결과로 보아, 호밀이나 혜어리베치의 단파 이용보다는 호밀에 헤어리베치를 20% 정도 혼파하여 개화기${\sim}$유숙기에 수확하는 것이 단위 면적당 수량과 사료가치를 높일 수 있는 한가지 방법이라 하겠다.
