This study was carried out to investigate the effect of harvest stage of rape on nutritive values and quality of round baled rape silage in field of forage crops of Department of Animal Resources Development, National Institute of Animal Science, RDA. Rape was harvested at three different growth stages (flowering, milk and dough stage) and ensiled at each harvest stages. The content of moisture of rape increased with delayed harvest maturity. However, the content of moisture of rape was controlled by pre-wilting (24 hr. and 48 hr). The content of moisture in dough stage was similar to that of haylage. The content of crude protein in round baled rape silage increased with delayed harvest maturity, but the contents of acid detergent fiber, neutral detergent fiber and total digestible nutrient decreased. The pH in all rape silage ranged from 3.8 to 4.4 at three different harvest stages, and pH in dough stage was higher than that of flowering and milk stages (p<0.05). The content of lactic acid of all rape silage increased with delayed harvest maturity (p<0.05), but the content of acetic acid decreased (p<0.05). And then, flieg's score revealed that there was an increase in order; flowering stage (100) = milk stage (100) > ripen stage (88).

According to the results from the experiments of selecting a suitable variety of forage rape and comparing productivity and nutrient quality between forage rape and oil seed rape, Velox appeared to be the most suitable variety in terms of productivity and nutrient quality at the southern area of Korea among the varieties used in the experiments. Consequently, Velox was grown under two different cultural methods, individual culture and population culture, and productivity and variation of nutrient quality during the growth period were observed and compared between the cultural methods. The results from the experiment are summarized as follows: 1. Although variations were great in plant fresh weight and plant dry matter weight among plants, individual culture showed significantly higher value in these characters at the 1 % level than population culture. Plant fresh weight and plant dry matter weight were largely dependent upon the amount of branches in case of individual culture. However, in population culture, they were equally dependent upon the amount of branches and main stem. There was no significant difference in dry matter percentage between cultural methods, and main stem showed highest dry matter percentage. 2. Content of crude protein was decreasing gradually as plants continued to grow. Individual culture showed higher content of crude protein than population culture from 90 to 120 days after sowing but vice versa from 180 days after sowing to flowering stage. Contents of fiber such as NDF, ADF, cellulose and lignin was low at the early stage of growth. It was increasing gradually as plants grew older and at the latter stage of growth plants under individual culture showed higher values in contents of fiber. 3. In vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of both stems and leaves was decreasing gradually as plants grew older. Plants under individual culture showed higher IVDMD of stems than plants under population culture, but no significant difference in IVDMD of leaves was observed between cultural methods.

The objective of this study is to obtain the basic data for investigating the potentiality of continuous utilization (first cutting in the late fall and regrowth yield in next spring) of forage rape seeded in fall. Non-structural carbohydrates(NSC) in leaves and roots of forage rape seeded on Oct. 3 were analyzed during a growth period. The greatest change in NSC content was observed between the wintering and the early spring period. The total content of soluble sugar in leaves and roots highly increased from the late fall(Nov. 7) to the wintering period (Feb. 4), and then rapidly decreased on the early regrow^ period(Mar. 31). The contents of fructose and glucose were relatively lower, and their quantitative change also was smaller than those of other sugars through entire growth period. The highest accumulation of sucrose occured hum the late fall to wintering period, and then greatly decreased in the early regrowth period. Sucrose content in roots was 2.3 times higher than that of leaves in wintering period. Starch was the largest pool of NSC and its content in leaves and roots showed a similar pattern with that of sucrose through entire growth period. Starch contents in leaves and roots were 38mg and 189mgl gDM in the late fall(Nov. 7), 187 and 497mg/gDM(Feb. 4) in the wintering period and 69 and 79mglgDM(Mar. 28) in the early regrowth period, respectively. The results clearly showed that the main reserve forms of NSC are starch and sucrose, and that they are hlghly stored in roots in overwintering forage rape.

With ${15}^N$ labeling under split roots system of winter rye (Secale cereale L.) and forage rape (Brassica napus L.) grown at $5^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$, the N flows were respectively quantified to investigate the transport of newly absorbed nitrate-N in whole plant level at low temperature. Comparing with $25^{\circ}C$ culture condition, the total absorbed nitrate-N content at $5^{\circ}C$ decreased to 59.3% and 27.1% in winter rye and forage rape during 9 days. About 2.5% and 7.6 % of nitrate-N were transported into roots, respectively, in winter rye and in forage rape at $25^{\circ}C$. These proportions increased at $5^{\circ}C$ to 3.8% and 10.9%, respectively. Total N contents transferred by xylem in winter rye grown and forage rape grown at $25^{\circ}C$ during were 55.9 and 54.4 mg N/plant, respectively. xylem flows at $5^{\circ}C$ were 60.4% and 28.8% lower than at $25^{\circ}C$ for winter rye and forage rape. These valves represented that averagely 96.8 % and 90.8% of total absorbed nitrate-N were transferred to leaves in winter rye and forage rape during 9 days. Phloem flows were the smallest among other N flows and were much less influenced by temperature treatment for two species examined. About 2.5% and 0.5% of absorbed N were recycled into roots by phloem transport at $25^{\circ}C$, respectively, for winter rye and forage rape. These proportions increased to 5.2% and 0.9% at $5^{\circ}C$.

A pulse-chase labeling of $^{15}N$ on winter rye (Scale cereale) and forage rape (Brassica napus) grown at $15^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ was carried out to determine the effects of low temperature on the uptake exogenous N and the remobilization of endogenous N. The growth rate of leaves and roots depressed at $5^{\circ}C$. AAer 9 days at $5^{\circ}C$, nitrogen content of leaves decreased to 20% on the average while that of roots increased to 12% compared with the plants grown at $25^{\circ}C$. Total content of $NO_3$- uptake 60m medium was 23.0 and 43.5 mg Nlplant, respectively, for winter rye and forage rape grown at $5^{\circ}C$ during 9 days. These values were corresponded to 59.3 and 26.1% lower uptake than those of $25^{\circ}C$. A large part of 1 5 ~ was distributed into leaves throughout time course in both of two species. The content of $^{15}N$ in leaves of winter rye at day 6 increased to 166 and 296 $\mu^{15}$N/plant compared with the initial value (day 0) in the plants grown at $5^{\circ}C$and $25^{\circ}C$ , corresponding to 90 and 163 $\mu$g N of remobilization h m roots into leaves during the fist 6 days. From 7 to 9 days, 75 and 52 $\mu$gN of outflow 6om leaves were occurred at $5^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$. However, little remobilization of endogenous N was estimated in forage rape throughout the entire time course regardless of temperature treatment. Comparing two species studied, winter rye was much sensitively influenced by low temperature on the uptake of exogenous N and the remobilization of endogenous N.
One of the challenges to increase milk production in a large pasture-based herd with an automatic milking system (AMS) is to grow forages within a 1- km radius, as increases in walking distance increases milking interval and reduces yield. The main objective of this study was to explore sustainable forage option technologies that can supply high amount of grazeable forages for AMS herds using the Agricultural Production Systems Simulator (APSIM) model. Three different basic simulation scenarios (with irrigation) were carried out using forage crops (namely maize, soybean and sorghum) for the spring-summer period. Subsequent crops in the three scenarios were forage rape over-sown with ryegrass. Each individual simulation was run using actual climatic records for the period from 1900 to 2010. Simulated highest forage yields in maize, soybean and sorghum- (each followed by forage rape-ryegrass) based rotations were 28.2, 22.9, and 19.3 t dry matter/ha, respectively. The simulations suggested that the irrigation requirement could increase by up to 18%, 16%, and 17% respectively in those rotations in El-Nino years compared to neutral years. On the other hand, irrigation requirement could increase by up to 25%, 23%, and 32% in maize, soybean and sorghum based rotations in El-Nino years compared to La-Nina years. However, irrigation requirement could decrease by up to 8%, 7%, and 13% in maize, soybean and sorghum based rotations in La-Nina years compared to neutral years. The major implication of this study is that APSIM models have potentials in devising preferred forage options to maximise grazeable forage yield which may create the opportunity to grow more forage in small areas around the AMS which in turn will minimise walking distance and milking interval and thus increase milk production. Our analyses also suggest that simulation analysis may provide decision support during climatic uncertainty.

We investigated the range of linoleic acid concentrations in different forage species and harvest stages. The linoleic acid concentrations in main cultivated grasses and forage crops were analyzed at three harvesting dates in Korea. The experiment compared 19 species of main grasses and forage crops, including eight species of grasses (Perennial ryegrass, Reed canarygrass, Tall fescue, Timothy, Bromegrass, Kentucky bluegrass, Orchardgrass and Wheat grass), six legumes (White clover, Red clover, Sweet clover, Crimson clover, Alfalfa and Hairy vetch) and five forage crops (Italian ryegrass, Barley, Rye, Oat and Rape) in Korea with three cuts (8 May, 19 May and 28 May). The linoleic acid concentrations of Reed canarygrass and Timothy were the highest, and Bromegrass was the lowest among the grass species. All grass species had high concentrations of linoleic acid at the late May harvest stage but were low at the mid May harvest stage. Legumes had higher linoleic acid concentrations than those of grasses, and harvesting in mid-May resulted in the highest linoleic acid concentration. Rape had the highest linoleic acid concentration and rye showed high concentrations of linoleic acid when compared with those of forage crops. All species of grasses and forage had decreased linoleic acid concentrations by the harvest stage. We have demonstrated opportunities to change the composition of ruminant products through breeding, selection, and management of grasses for altered levels of linoleic acid as a precursor to conjugated linoleic acid.

A series of tests was carried out to determine the purity and germination of pasture plant and forage crop seeds imported in 1986 and 1987 at the grassland and forage laboratory, College of Agriculture, Seoul National University, Suweon. At the same time, the results obtained were compared with the National Livestook Cooperatives Federation(NLCF1's seed standards as a guide for determining seed quality. 1. The germination percentages of Potomac orchardgrass, Fawn tall fescue, Aquila Ky bluegrass and California ladino clover among grasses and legumes tested were lower than those of the N1,CF's standards, but the germination percentages of forage crops were higher than those of the NLCF's standards. 2. The purity of Potomac orchardgrass and Aquila Ky bluegrass were relatively lower than those of the NLCF's standards. 3. The percentages of other crop seeds in Potomac orchardgrass, Fawn tall fescue, Aquila Ky bluegrass and Cayuse oats were lower than those of the NLCF's standards. 4. Percentage of inert matter in the seeds was lower compared with the NLCF's standards except Akela ' forage rape. 5. The seeds of Potomac orchardgrass, NK 367 sorghum hybrid and sorghum x sudangrass hybrids such as NC+855, G83F and TE Haygrazer were contaminated with one or more weed seeds. Rumex spp. was by far the most common weed in the seeds imported. The other weeds occurred at a low level were Rumex acestosella, Senecio jacobaea, Cirsium arvense and Cuscicta spp. 6. There were many variations in 1,000 seed weight among different species. A thousand seed weight of Aquila Ky bluegrass was 0.263g, but that of Tetrone Italian ryegrass, Akela forage rape and Pioneer 3160 sorghum x sudangrass hybrid was 3.875, 3.476 and 242.4578, respectively. 7. According to the fluorescence test of ryegrass seed, Tetrone Italian ryegrass was known as a true annual type, but an unknown cultivar produced in Cheju was contaminated with 6% of perennial ryegrass seed.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the grazing performance of dairy cattle for winter rye, sorghum-sudangrass hybrid and oat including of rape in Hwa seong-gun, Kyeonggido, from 1993 to 1994. Each crops were utilized from the stage of 8-leaves to late blooming for sorghum-sudangrass, and from final leaves to soft dough for winter rye and oat plant. Under three different cropping system of winter rye-sorghum x sudangrass, spring oat-sorghum X sudangrass-autumn oat, and silage corn-autumn oat, a succeshl hehage production was available for grazing performance from April 26 to December 15, continuously. Annual dry matter yields for grazing allowance were 26.1 tontha in average of all cropping system. Autumn oat rnixtured with rape showed the highest herbage utilization with 91.6% grazing intensity and the lowest in sorghum-sudangrass with a value of 60.6- 69.1 %. Labor investment for herbage production were 805 hour in the cutting management and 339 hour per hectar in the grazing utilization.
