Feeding Behaviour and Forage Nutrient Utilization by Goats on a Semi-Arid Reconstituted Silvipasture

  • Seasonal variations in the feeding behaviour of Jamunapari and Barbari goat breeds and their utilization of browse and grass nutrients was evaluated in a promising 3-tier (Leucaena leucocephala- Dichro-stachys nutan-Cenchrus ciliaris) reconstituted pasture during summer, rainy and winter season of the years 1987 and 1988. Distinct diurnal pattern of feeding was observed with both the breeds. Jamunapari goats spent significantly more time foraging during winter season (352.0 min) followed by summer (306.0 min) and least in rainy season (277.0 min). Though no significant difference was observed in the relative time spent by Barbari goats on grazing activities during summer and winter season, they spent significantly more (p < 0.05) time during rainy season as compared to other two seasons. The preference of grazing goats for certain plant species in relation to others was evident with distinct seasonal and breed variations. DM intake (g/kg $BW^{075}$) varied significantly (p < 0.05) from season to season. Among the browse. L. leucocephala was prefered over D. nutan irrespective of breed over the seasons. There was no breed difference in DM intake, or proximate composition and nutrient digestibility of ingested herbage. The available nutrient content of ingested forage was found sufficient to meet the nutrient requirements of adult goats for maintenance (NRC, 1981). The reconstituted 3-tier pasture dominated by plant species like L. leucocephala and Cenchrus species appear to have great potential to sustain the nutrient requirement of goats without adverse seasonal fluctuations in pasture quality.

  • 홀스타인 암소 육성우에 옥수수사일리지와 볏짚을 급여하면서 영양수준을 80, 100 그리고 12%(NRC 요구량 대비)로 급여할때 육성우의 중체량 및 영양소 섭취량을 조사하기 위하여 육성우 30두를 각 처리당 5두씩 완전임의 배치로 공시히여 체중 400kg까지 시험을 수행한 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 옥수수사일리지 및 볏짚급여시 육성기 최대 일당중체량은 각각 체중 200과 250kg 일때였다. 2. 체중이 증가할수록 DM, CP 및 TDN 요구량은 증가되었으며 체중 250~300kg 일때 이들 영양소 요구량이 가장 높았다. 3. 체중 250~300kg일때 체중(X)과 DM, CP, TDN 섭취량(I)과의 관계는 다음과 같다. DMI = 8.0168X - 0.0209 (r=0.7986$^{**}$) CPI = 101428X - 0.0145 (r=0.5787$^{**}$) TDNI = 6.7620X - 0.3702 (r=0.6877$^{**}$)

만추 방목기간의 연장이 이듬해 봄 목초의 생육에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Extension of Grazing Duration in Late Autumn on Grass Growth in Following Spring)

  • The experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of extension of grazing duration in late autumn on grass growth in following spring, in order to improve the rate of self-sufficiency for roughage feed. Plant height, total biomass and litter production of herbage were increased when the grazing was finished early in late autumn. The proportions of clover and litter, and amounts of animal intake were decreased, with extended grazing duration in late autumn. But when the grazing was finished late in autumn, the contents of crude protein (CP, %) of herbage were increased, contents of acid detergent fiber (ADF, %), neutral detergent fiber (NDF, %) and crude ash (%) were decreased in pasture after grazing, therefore the contents of total digestible nutrients (TDN, %) and relative feed value (RFV) of herbage were improved. The early end grazing showed that plant height, total biomass and litter production of herbage in following spring were higher than those in late end grazing. However, increased yields were not significantly different among end grazing treatments (0.12-0.15 tonha), except for the final end grazing in late autumn (0.01 tonha). With extended grazing duration in late autumn, the contents of CP of herbage in following spring were increased, contents of ADF, were decreased, and RFV were improved. 산양에 의한 초지유형별 목초의 섭취량 및 영양가치 이용성 비교 (A Comparison of Sward Types on the Intake and Nutrients Utilization of Herbage by Korean Native Goats)

  • The objective of this experiment was to compare the dry matter intake, nutrients digestibility, nitrogen and energy utilization of hehage among the orchardgrass(OG) pure, orchardgrass(OG)-red clover(RC) mixture and complex rnixtures(C. mix) by Korean native goat. The results obtained were surnmerized as follows: 1. Crude protein(CP) content was higher in OG-RC and C. Mix diets than in OG pure diets(P<0.05). NDF content was higher in OG pure diets than other diets(P<0.05). But ADF, Lignin contents and gross energy did not differ among all diets. 2. Dry matter intake by Korean native goat tend to be high in OG-RC diets, and low in OG pure diets. But there was no significant difference statistically. Dry matter and cellular constituents digestibilities were higher for OG-RC and C. Mix diets than OG pure diet, but CP and NDF digestibilities were no significant difference among diets. 3. The amount of nitrogen consumed amount by Korean native goat in the OG-RC diet was higher than other diets. But, due to largely relative urinary and fecal nitrogen loss, Apparrently digested nitrogen and retained nitrogen percents were not significant difference among diets. 4. The amount of energy consumed by Korean native goat in OG-RC diet was higher than other diets. But, due to largely relative urinary and fecal energy loss, digestable energy percent was lower than C. Mix diets. But.metabolic energy percent was no significant difference among diets. Therefore, there was no significant differences among sward types for the utilization of nitrogen and energy by Korean native goats.

Supplementation of Dry Brewer's Grain to Lower Quality Forage Diet for Growing Lambs in Southeast Nigeria

  • Twenty yearling lambs of Southeast Nigeria dwarf, liveweight ($18{\pm}1.9 kg$) were grouped into 5 treatments. Dry brewer's grain was substituted for maize offal in the experiment diets namely A to E at 0%, 15%, 30%, 45% and 60% respectively, as supplement to low quality, dry season cassava leaf top and Andropogan gayanus hay at 1:1 ratio that lasted for 56 days. After which 5 of the lambs (average bodyweight=$24.3{\pm}1.5kg$) were transferred to metabolism crates to determine the digestibility and nitrogen/protein balance studies. While the mean group intakes were (945.9, 996.1, 1,040.5, 1,148.5 and 1,037.7 g conc. DM/day), the growth rates were (115.1, 124.1, 152.5, 168.5 and 123.1 g liveweight gain/day), respectively. There was a recorded decline in both intake (p>0.05) and growth rate (p<0.05) as the level of dry brewer's grain was increased beyond 45% of the supplement. Similar trend was observed on the protein and organic matter efficiency ratios (p>0.05) together with the organic matter intake. The urine nitrogen output was also significant (p>0.05). The work further revealed that, at a certain critical level of intake, dry brewer's grain is able to support growth rates measurable to or better than those noted when feeding maize offal to lambs, and went on to prove dry brewer's grain as an attractive supplementary feed for the drier months of the year, in the Southeast of Nigeria.

Effect of condensed tannins from Leucaena leucocephala on rumen fermentation, methane production and population of rumen protozoa in heifers fed low-quality forage

  • Objective: The aim of the experiment was to assess the effect of increasing amounts of Leucaena leucocephala forage on dry matter intake (DMI), organic matter intake (OMI), enteric methane production, rumen fermentation pattern and protozoa population in cattle fed Pennisetum purpureum and housed in respiration chambers. Methods: Five crossbred heifers (Bos taurus${\times}$Bos indicus) (BW: $295{\pm}6kg$) were fed chopped P. purpureum grass and increasing levels of L. leucocephala (0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% of dry matter [DM]) in a $5{\times}5$ Latin square design. Results: The voluntary intake and methane production were measured for 23 h per day in respiration chambers; molar proportions of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) were determined at 6 h postprandial period. Molar concentration of VFAs in rumen liquor were similar (p>0.05) between treatments. However, methane production decreased linearly (p<0.005), recording a maximum reduction of up to ~61% with 80% of DM incorporation of L. leucocephala in the ration and no changes (p>0.05) in rumen protozoa population were found. Conclusion: Inclusion of 80% of L. leucocephala in the diet of heifers fed low-quality tropical forages has the capacity to reduce up to 61.3% enteric methane emission without affecting DMI, OMI, and protozoa population in rumen liquor.

Effects of Black Sugar Supplementation on Dry Matter Intake, Milk Yield, and Milk Composition in Holstein Dairy Cow

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of supplementing additional sucrose, in the form of black sugar (BS), into the diet of Holstein dairy cows on dry matter intake (DMI), milk yield, and milk composition. Eight Holstein dairy cows ($741{\pm}65.8kg$ body weight) were divided into two groups, including the control and BS groups. Animals in the control group were offered a total mixed ration (TMR) ad libitum, and the BS group was offered TMR with 300 g of BS/head/d. After two weeks of adaptation period, the animal performance, including DMI, milk yield and milk composition, was measured. Cows supplemented with BS appeared to consume more feed than that by the controls (i.e., 17.08 and 18.28 kg/d for the control and BS groups, respectively). However, there were no significant differences between treatments. Milk yield or milk composition, such as milk fat, milk protein, lactose, solids-non-fat, total solids and pH, did not differ between treatments. However, there was a significant difference (p<0.05) in the concentration of milk urea nitrogen (MUN). The MUN concentration of the BS group was approximately 15% lower than that of the control group (i.e., 18.75 vs. 16.05 mg/dL for the control and BS groups, respectively), which suggests improved nitrogen metabolism in the animals. The somatic cell count was numerically lower in the cows of the BS group compared to those in the control group. However, a significant difference was not noted due to the substantial amount of variation among cows. In terms of the trace mineral composition for milk, the concentration of Cu from BS animals was higher (p<0.05) than that of the control animals. In summary, supplementing the diets of dairy cows with BS marginally affected animal performance and improved nitrogen metabolism. The level of supplementation and other factors, such as animal variation were discussed.

The Role of Brain Somatostatin in the Central Regulation of Feed, Water and Salt Intake in Sheep

  • The physiological role of brain somatostatin in the central regulation of feed intake in sheep was investigated through a continuous intracerebroventricular (ICV) infusion of somatostastin 1-28 (SRIF) at a small dose of $5{\mu}g/0.2ml/hr$ for 98.5 hours from day 1 to day 5. Sheep (n=5) were fed for 2 hours once a day, and water and 0.5 M NaCI solution were given ad libitum. Feed, water and salt intake were measured during ICV infusion of artificial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and SRIF. The feed intake during SRIF infusion on days 2 to 5 increased significantly compared to that during CSF infusion. Water intake, when compared to that during CSF infusion, only increased significantly on day 4. NaCI intake during SRIF infusion was not different from that during CSF infusion. Mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) and heart rate during SRIF infusion were not different from those during CSF infusion. The plasma concentrations of Na, K, Cl, osmolality and total protein during SRIF infusion were also not different from those values during CSF infusion.There are two possible mechanisms, that is, the suppression of brain SRIF on feed suppressing hormones and the direct actions on brain mechanisms controlling feed intake, explaining how SRIF works in the brain to bring about increases in feed intake in sheep fed on hay. The results indicate that brain SRIF increases feed intake in sheep fed on hay.

가축분 시용수준이 수수 X 수단그라스 교잡종의 질산태질소 함량과 당도 및 채식률에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Application Level of Animal Manure on the Nitrate Concentration, Sugar Content and Intake of Forage Sorghum X Sudangrass Hybrid)

  • 본 시험은 가축분 퇴비 시용조건에서 수수$\times$수단그라스 교잡종(Sorghm bicolor (L.) Moench)의 시용수준별, 생육시기별, 잎과 줄기 부위별 질산태 질소 함량과 당토 및 가축 채식률 등을 구명하고자 Pioneer 988 품종을 공시하여 1995년도에 실시하였다. 가축분은 톱밥과 50:50으로 섞은 발효분으로 시용수준은 ha당 우분 퇴비 50, 100, 150톤, 돈분 퇴비 20, 40, 80톤, 계분 퇴비 10, 20, 40톤을 파종 보름전 시용하였으며, 각각 무비구(대조구)를 두고 파종은 ha당 30kg의 종자를 휴폭 50cm로 조파하였다. 수수$\times$수단그라스 교잡종의 질산태 질소 함량은 가축분 퇴비 시용구에서 무비구인 대조구 (평균 228mg/kg)에 비해 높았으며(P<0.05), 또 가축분 퇴비 시용수준이 높아짐에 따라 평균 질산태 질소 함량은 397, 512, 609mg/kg으로 유의적으로 증가하였다(P<0.05). 생육시기별 질산태 질소 함량은 초장 50~60cm, 100~120cm, 200~220cm일 때 각각 평균 438, 454, 418mg으로 비슷한 수준이었다. 또 질산태 질소 함량은 가축분 퇴비 종류에 관계없이 줄기(376mg/kg)가 잎(135mg)에 비해 크게 높았으며(P<0.05), 잎에서는 하부 잎(151mg)이 상부 잎(58mg)에 비해 현저히 높았고 (P<0.05), 줄기에서도 아래부위로 갈수록 질산태 질소 함량은 유의적으로 증가하여 상부위, 중간부위, 하부위에서 각각 357, 511 및 610mg이었다.(P<0.05). 수수$\times$수단그라스의 당도는 가축분 퇴비 시용구에서 대조구(평균 4.9。)에 비해 낮았으며 (P<0.05), 또 가축분 퇴비 시용수준이 높아짐에 따라 평균 당도는 4.9, 4.4, 4.3。로 유의적으로 감소하였다(P<0.05). 본 시험에서 대체적인 당도의 범위는 4~5。 범위였으며, 생육시기별 당도는 초장 50~60cm와 100~120cm에서는 평균 3.9。로 낮았으나 초장 200~220cm일 때는 평균 6.1。로 크게 높아졌다. 가축 채식률은 가축분 퇴비 시용구에서 무비구인 대조구(평균 76.1%)에 비해 낮았으며(P<0.05), 또 가축분 퇴비 시용수준이 높아짐에 따라 평균 채식률은 73.9, 58.7, 52.3%로 크게 감소하였다.

가축분 시용조건에서 4종 수수 X 수단그라 교잡종의 질산태질소 함량과 당도 및 채식률 비교 연구 (Studies on the Nitrate Concentration, Sugar Content and Intake of Four Sorghum X Sudangrass Hybrids Grown under Application of Animal Manure)

  • 본 시험은 가축분 시용 조건에서 $수수{\times}수단그라스$ 교잡종중 우리나라에서 많이 재배하고 있는 장려품종 4종(P 988, Jumbo, TE-Hay-grazer, NC+ 855)을 공시하여 생육시기별, 잎과 줄기의 부위별 질산태 질소 함량과 당도 및 가축 기호도 등을 구명하였다. 가축분은 톱밥과 50:50으로 섞은 발효분으로 ha당 우분 40톤, 돈분 및 계분은 30톤을 파종 보름전 시용하였으며, 파종은 ha당 30kg의 종자를 휴폭 50cm로 1995년 4월 21일에 실시하였다. 수수${\times}$수단그라스 교잡종의 질산태 질소 함량은 초장 50~50cm일 때 365mg/kg, 초장 100~120cm일 때 501mg, 초장 200~220cm일 때 502mg이었으며, 품종별로는 Jumbo에서 평균 317mg으로 낮았고 P 988(526mg)과 NC+ 855 (519mg)에서 높았다(P<0.05). 또 품종에 관계없이 줄기(376mg)가 잎(135mg)에 비해 질산태 질소함량이 크게 높았으며(P<0.05), 같은 잎과 줄기에서는 아래부위로 갈수록 질산태 질소 함량은 유의적으로 증가하였다(P<0.05). 품종별 당도는 NC+ 855가 평균 $3.9^{\circ}$ 로 가장 높았으며, 다음이 P 988($3.4^{\circ}$), TE-Hay grazer ($3.2^{\circ}$), Jumbo($2.9^{\circ}$) 순이었다. 채식률은 P 988과 NC+ 855에서 Jumbo와 TE-Haygrazer에 비해 다소 높은 경향이었으나 장려품종 4종간 유의적인 채식률 차이는 없었다.
