Objectives : To evaluate the effect of foot orthotic in patient with chronic pain and pelvic obliquity in standing. Methods : Four cases of functional spinal scoliosis, were investigated for the changes in the calcaneal stance position angle, pelvic height, pelvic angle, Cobb's angle and walking pattern. Standing full spine X-ray for measuring the pelvic height, pelvic angle, Cobb's angle were checked before and after application of foot orthosis. The foot orthosis was composed of polyprophylen and chamude cover. Results : 1. There was no change in resting calcaneal stance position. 2. Difference of pelvic height and pelvic angle was reduced after application of a foot orthosis. 3. Cobb's angle in 2 cases was reduced after application of a foot orthosis. 4. Walking balance was improved. 5. Visual analogue scale was decreased. Conclusions : The study showed that foot orthosis seemed to be effective for chronic pain, spinal curve, pelvic obliquity and walking balance.
This paper presents a foot movement tracking system using ultrasonic sensors and inertial sensors, where the position and velocity of foot are computed using inertial sensors and ultrasonic sensors mounted on a shoe. A foot movement can be estimated using an inertial navigation algorithm only; however, the error tends to increase due to biases of gyroscopes and accelerometers. To reduce the error, a localization system using ultrasonic sensors is additionally used. In the localization system using ultrasonic sensors, the position is continuously calculated in the absolute coordinate. An indirect Kalman filter is used to combine inertial sensors and ultrasonic sensors. Through experiments, it is shown that the proposed system can track a foot movement.
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of pelvic tilt exercise with changing the body position on foot contact pattern in the hemiplegic patients. Methods : Thirty seven hemiplegic patients were randomly divided 3 groups; control group (CG), sitting exercise group (SIEG) and standing exercise group (STEG). F-mat system and F-scan system were used for the measurement of foot contact pattern of hemiplegic side in walking. Data were analyzed statistically using paired t-test and one-way ANOVA. Results : The results were as follows : 1) Contact area of CG and SIEG were not significant difference in walking. Contact area of STEG was significant increased in walking. 2) Anteroposterior distance of COP of SIEG and STEG were significant increased in walking. Conclusion : These results suggest that pelvic tilt exercise in sitting and standing position are effective in the improvement of Anteroposterior distance of COP and gait stability are increased in only standing position.
This study, which is conducted on two groups of skilled people and unskilled people, is purposed to analyze joint angle of lower extremity during short track speed skating in order to find out efficient body position and propose ideal training method. Short Track Speed Skating has a wide range of research areas, but their findings indicate a promising area for further research. Targeting 8 people who are skilled in short track speed skating and 8 people who are not skilled in it, this study analyzes three dimensional images using super-high speed camera to compare differences between these two groups of people. In this study, 6 sections of body positions including right foot push-off, right foot recovery, right foot basic position, left foot push-off, left foot recovery, and left foot basic position were analyzed using 8 super-high speed cameras of VICON. These body positions were analyzed in order to find out joint angles of the hip joint, the knee joint, and the ankle joint. In the section 4 of the inner and outer parts of the left hip angles showed significant difference, and most of the sections of knee joint angles also showed significant difference. In the section 1 and 2 of the plantar flexion, dorsiflexion of ankle joints showed significant difference(p<.001) It was found out that there were differences between groups of skilled people and unskilled people in terms of lower extremity's joint angles such as angles of the hip joint, the knee joint, and the ankle joint.
In this paper, the symmetric position drift of the integration approach in pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) system with dual foot-mounted IMU is analyzed. The PDR system that uses the inertial sensor attached to the shoe is called the IA-based PDR system. Since this system is designed based on the inertial navigation system (INS), it has the same characteristics as the error of the INS, then zero-velocity update (ZUPT) is used to correct this error. However, an error that cannot be compensated perfectly by ZUPT exists, and the trend of the position error is the symmetric direction along the side of the shoe(left, right foot) with the IMU attached. The symmetric position error along the side of the shoe gradually increases with walking. In this paper, we analyze the causes of symmetric position drift and show the results. It suggests the possibility of factors other than the error factors that are generally considered in the PDR system based on the integration approach.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between foot pressure and upper arm PNF exercise conducted with elastic bands while standing. Methods: Eighteen asymptomatic patients consented to participate in the study. Foot pressure was measured in the standing position using the Gaitview system for proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation stretching (PNF) using a right upper arm pattern. Resistance strength was varied based on the type of elastic band used (red=medium, green=heavy, and blue=extra heavy). Statistical significance of the results was evaluated using a repeated one-way ANOVA, and the Bonferroni method was used for the ad hoc test (SPSS ver. 18. for Windows). Results: A significant difference was observed in fore-foot, rear-foot, and everage pressure after upper arm PNF exercise. However, there was no significant difference according to the type of elastic band. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, an upper arm PNF exercise with and without resistance may affect foot pressure in the standing position.
Background: The MLA is supported by both the abductor hallucis (ABH) and the extrinsic muscles. Insufficient muscular support may lower the MLA when the body's weight is applied to the foot. The short foot exercise (SFE) is effective in increasing the height of the MLA for people with flat feet. Most of the research related to the SFE has simply evaluated the efficiency of the exercise using enhanced ABH electromyography (EMG) activation. Since the tibialis anterior (TA), peroneus longus (PER), and ABH are all involved in supporting the MLA, a new experiment design examining the EMG of the selected muscles during SFE should be applied to clarify its effect. Objects: Therefore, this study aimed to clarify the effect of the SFE in different ankle position on the MLA angle and the activation of both the intrinsic and extrinsic muscles and to determine the optimal position. Methods: 20 healthy subjects and 12 subjects with flat feet were recruited from Yonsei University. The surface EMG and camera were used to collect muscle activation amplitude of TA, PER, and ABH and to capture the image of MLA angle during SFE. The subjects performed the SFE while sitting in three different ankle positions-neutral (N), dorsiflexion (DF) at 30 degrees, and plantar flexion (PF) at 30 degrees. Results: ABH EMG amplitudes were significantly greater in N and DF than in PF (p<.05). Muscle activation ratio of TA to ABH was the lowest in PF (p<.05). MLA angle in both groups significantly decreased in PF (p<.01). The TA and ABH was activated at the highest level in DF. However, in PF, subjects significantly activated the ABH and PER with relatively low activation of TA. Conclusion: Therefore, researchers need to discuss which SFE condition most effectively use the arch support muscle for flat foot.
The purpose of this study were to describe the performance 67 kindergartener who aged from 4 to 7 years on the Pediatric Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction for Balance(P-CTSIB) and to determine difference with foot position and age. All Subjects were performance with different foot position that were feet-together, heel-toes. the starting position was that subject placed their hands on the hips, The results of this study were as follows 1. There were significiant difference in all instances by age whoa subjects were foot together(p<0.05). 2. There were singificiant difference in all instances by age excepts condition V awhen subjects were heel toes(p<0.05). 3. Duration of balance performance, of 4-year-olds were shortest and duration of balance performance of 7-year-olds were longest.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine EMG activities and VMO/VL ratio of the vastus medialis oblique, vastus lateralis, and rectus femoris during squat exercise (knee angle: 15, 45, and 60 degrees; tibial rotation: internal rotation, neutral, and external rotation). Methods: Twelve subjects performed squat exercise at each knee angle and tibial rotation while electromyographic (EMG) activity was collected. Statistical analysis consisted of two-way repeated measures analysis of variance with post hoc analysis. Results: There were significant main effects of knee angles and foot positions and interaction effect on EMG activities of vastus medialis oblique and vastus lateralis. VMO/VL ratios were significantly different by tibial rotations and there was an interaction effect. A neutral position produced significantly more VMO/VL activity ratio than that from internally rotated position and externally rotated position at 60 degrees. Conclusion: Considering the interaction effects for EMG activity across quadriceps muscles tested, the 60 degrees knee angle with a neutral foot position may provide the most effective condition for patients with acute patellofemoral syndrome.
The paper introduces dynamic generation technique of foot trajectories for humanoid robots using CPG(Central Pattern Generator) and proposes adaptive walking method for slope terrains combining a feedback network. The proposed CPG based technique generates the trajectory of foot in the Cartesian coordinates system and it can change the step length adaptively according to the feedback information. To cope with variable slope terrains, the sensory feedback network in the CPG are designed using the geometry relationship between foot position and body center position such that humanoid robot can maintain its stability. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, the experiments on humanoid robot Nao are executed in the Webot simulation. The performance and motion features of the CPG based approach are compared and analyzed focusing on the adaptability in slope terrains.
