Self-sufficiency ratio of food crops in Korea is estimated under $20{\%}$ in 2010 because total food consumption including feed will be increased. but food grain production will be decreased. It is necessary to maintain the optimum level of food self-sufficiency rate to secure national food demand/supply balance and non-trade and multiple function of agriculture in Korea. It will be possible to produce more food grains having the acceptable quality if the appropriate policy and cropping techniques are developed and practised in future. Breeding for high yielding varieties should be the first target to raise the production potential of food crops . Number of varieties developed during last 30 years is counted as 353 in food crops. New varieties developed in 1990s showed the higher yield potential and the improved agronomic characteristics compared with 1970s and 1980s varieties. But number of varieties planted on the farmer's field over $5{\%}$ of national planting area is less than one third of total varieties developed Breeding efforts to maintain planting area of main food crops should be focussed on consumer's demand and farmer's need. They are the best quality variety in each field of crop utilization, the newly designed variety adapting to changes of natural, rural and cropping environment, and the higher yielding variety. It is also needed to develop new quality crop varieties for inducing more consumption of crop grain produced in Korea for direct food or processing. Development of barley varieties for animal feed. high income soybean varieties, high quality wheat variety. and super yielding rice and barley varieties are also needed to keep or maximize national food production potential. In order to establish the appropriate cropping technique for domestic food security, the strong and continuous interest and financial support on crop breeding are required, and the inter-disciplinary and inter-institutionary researches should be strengthened for successful crop breeding.

Food resources have been supplied more and more by crop land expansion, technological Improvement for higher crop yield, establishment of irrigation system, and input of fertilizers, chemicals and others, to sustain a world population increase currently about 6 billion. Food demand will be significantly increased in the 21st century due to population increases of 90 million per year and more consumption of meat with per capital income increase. But food production increase will be limited by difficulty of crop/irrigation land expansion and small or decreasing effectiveness of fertilizer use. Development of new techniques for higher yield per ha is only one way to meet future food demand increase. Optimistic prospect for food demand/supply balance was reported by FAO until 2010, and IFPRI until 2020. However, Worldwatch Institute warned world food supply will be less than expected demand by 500 million tons of cereal grains in 2030. It is necessary to establish a national plan to meet expected worldwide shortage of food resources in 21 century. What planning should be under taken to meet the upcoming century of food shortage in Korea whose food self-sufficiency rate is only $30{\%}$. It is recommended that (1) keep paddy field area as much as 1,100 thousand ha, (2) expansion of barley and wheat cultivation on all paddy area in winter season, (3) continue development of new technology to get international superiority of food resources produced in Korea, (4) expand nationwide the importance of food security under the current financial crisis encountered In Korea, and for food security in the future unified Korean peninsula.
Erwinia amylovora and Erwinia pyrifoliae cause fire blight and black-shoot blight, respectively, in apples and pears. E. pyrifoliae is less pathogenic and has a narrower host range than that of E. amylovora. Fire blight and black-shoot blight exhibit similar symptoms, making it difficult to distinguish one bacterial disease from the other. Molecular tools that differentiate fire blight from black-shoot blight could guide in the implementation of appropriate management strategies to control both diseases. In this study, a primer set was developed to detect and distinguish E. amylovora from E. pyrifoliae by conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The primers produced amplicons of different sizes that were specific to each bacterial species. PCR products from E. amylovora and E. pyrifoliae cells at concentrations of 104 cfu/ml and 107 cfu/ml, respectively, were amplified, which demonstrated sufficient primer detection sensitivity. This primer set provides a simple molecular tool to distinguish between two types of bacterial diseases with similar symptoms.

Unstable crop production and distribution affected by climate change and COVID-19 pandemic has raised the food security concerns worldwide. In particular, Russia's invasion to Ukraine has blocked the grain trade such as wheat and com to importing countries, which has aggravated the situation. Korea has relied on foreign imports for about 80% of domestic grain demand, raising great concerns on food security. Considering situations related to Korea's food security, some points in view of a crop scientist are suggested and discussed as follows; 1) Domestic production of major grain crops should be increased through encouraging farmers by appropriate governmental subsidy programs 2) International corporation should be strengthened and diversified for sustainable overseas agricultural development and for stable import even in case of food crisis and emergency. 3) Self-sufficiency target should be specified by law so that more budget investments could be put to alleviate the food security concerns. 4) Technologies for climate smart agriculture and for competitive agricultural products should be developed aided by social and governmental support.

A total of 80 pigs [(Landrace ${\times}$ Yorkshire) ${\times}$ Duroc] with an average body weight of $72.9{\pm}2.6kg$ were used in the present study to investigate the effects of fermented whole crop wheat and barley with or without supplementing inoculums throughout the restricted feeding in finishing pigs. There were 4 replicate pens per treatment. Pigs were fed ad libitum throughout the experiment as the control (CON), and the other four groups were restricted to 10% in the CON diet and fed ad libitum fermented whole crop cereals: fermented whole crop barley with inoculums; fermented whole crop barley without inoculums; fermented whole crop wheat with inoculums; and fermented whole crop wheat without inoculums. During the entire experiment, the average daily feed intake (ADFI) decreased in the fermented barley and fermented wheat groups compared to the CON, while no difference was observed in the average daily gain (ADG), feed efficiency (gain : feed ratio, G : F) between the control and fermented whole crop barley, wheat diet group. Dry matter and nitrogen digestibility did not show a significant difference among the treatments. In the blood constituents, concentrations of blood urea nitrogen were significantly lower in pigs fed fermented whole crop barley without inoculum diets compared with the other treatments. In conclusion, restricted feeding with fermented whole crop barley and wheat regardless of the supplementing inoculums showed no significant difference in growth performance compared to the CON. This suggests that there is a possibility that fermented whole crop barley and wheat could replace part of the conventional diets.

To detect Escherichia coli from agri-food and production environments, a device based on IoT (internet of things) technology that can check test results in real time on a mobile phone has been developed. The efficiency of the developed device, which combines an incubator equipped with a UV lamp, a high-resolution camera and software to detect E. coli in the field, was evaluated by measuring the device's temperature, detection limit, and detection time. The device showed a difference between its programmed temperature setting and actual temperature of about 1.0℃. In a detection limit test performed with a single-colony inoculation, a color change to yellow and a florescent signal were detected after 12 and 15 h incubations, respectively. The incubation time also decreased along with increasing bacteria levels. When applying the developed method and device to various samples, including utensils, gloves, irrigation water, seeds, and vegetables, detection rates of E. coli using the device were higher than those of the Korean Food Code method. These results show that the developed protocol and device can efficiently detect E. coli from agri-food production environments and vegetables.

This study was performed to investigate changes in the content and purity, as well as physical characteristics of ${\beta}$-glucan extracted from acid hydrolyzed whole grain barleys. Waxy and non-waxy barleys (Hordeum vulgare) were hydrolyzed with different concentrations of HCl (0.1~0.5 N) for 1 h. As the HCl concentration increased, the contents of total and soluble ${\beta}$-glucan from acid hydrolyzed barley decreased. However the ratio of soluble/total ${\beta}$-glucan content and purities of ${\beta}$-glucan significantly increased. The ratio of ${\beta}-(1{\rightarrow}4)/{\beta}-(1{\rightarrow}3)$ linkages, molecular weight, and viscosity of soluble ${\beta}$-glucan of raw barleys were 2.28~2.52, $6.0{\sim}7.0{\times}10^5g/mol$, and 12.8~32.8 centipoise (cP). Those of isolated soluble ${\beta}$-glucan were significantly decreased to 2.05~2.15, $6.6{\sim}7.8{\times}10^3g/mol$, and 3.6~4.2 cP, respectively, with increasing acid concentration. The re-solubility of raw barley ${\beta}$-glucan was about 50%, but increased to 97% with increasing acid concentration. Acid hydrolysis was shown to be an effective method to produce ${\beta}$-glucan with high ratio of soluble ${\beta}$-glucan content, purity, water solubility, and low viscosity.
