Sugammadex has shown faster reversal of steroidal neuromuscular blockade (NMB) than neostigmine, a traditional reversal agent for NMB, even in the intense block phase. This efficiency is possible because of the unique mechanism of action by encapsulating the NMB molecules. Therefore, with the use of sugammadex, we can also expect to avoid direct interactions with the cholinergic system and its subsequent side effects, which are disadvantages of traditional drugs. However, despite these benefits and US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in 2015, rare adverse events associated with sugammadex have been reported. Herein, we report a case of bronchospasm that developed immediately after sugammadex administration.
Background: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA), one of alopecias, requires continuous treatment in order to prevent or stop it, and patient's compliance is very important. Currently, only two drugs (finasteride, minoxidil) have been approved for AGA by Food and Drug Administration of United States (US FDA). However, another ${\alpha}-2$ reductase inhibitor, dutasteride, is approved by Korea Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) through a phase III trial. For treatment, pharmacotherapy of AGA usually combines topical minoxidil 7% with one of oral <${\alpha}-2$ reductase inhibitor. Objectives: We evaluated the comparative efficacy and adverse effect between topical minoxidil 7%/finasteride 1 mg and topical minoxidil 7%/dutasteride 0.5 mg pharmacotherapy for outpatients with AGA. Also we evaluated the relationship between therapeutic effect and regular hospital visit. Method: This study was performed retrospectively based on electronic medical record (EMR) data of total 98 patients (topical minoxidil 7% with dutasteride 0.5 mg ($Avodart^{(R)}$) or finasteride 1 mg ($Alopecia^{(R)}$, $Propecia^{(R)}$) with diagnosis of AGA from department of dermatology at a secondary hospital from January $1^{st}$, to May $31^{st}$, 2014. Results: The efficacy and adverse event of topical minoxidil 7%/dutasteride 0.5 mg (DUTA group) were 100% and 45.7%, and of topical minoxidil 7%/finasteride 1 mg (FINA group) were 92.1% and 33.3%, respectively. The mean onset time of responses and adverse events in the FINA group were 3.86 months and 4.43 months. Those in the DUTA group were 3.97 months and 5.06 months. Conclusion: Both FINA and DUTA group were highly effective, but the DUTA group showed higher efficacy and adverse effects than those in the FINA group. Dutasteride may be another alternative in AGA treatment.

Formalin, 37% formaldehyde, has been employed as a chemical for controlling ectoparasites and aquatic fungi responsible for infectious fish of diseases in hatcheries and culture facilities (Roberts, 1978; Schnick, 1991; Rach et al., 1997). Regarding the commercial usage of formaldehyde in the aquaculture industry, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved three commercial products as parasiticides in a species-specific manner: Paracide-F and Formalin-F for bluegill, catfish, largemouth bass, salmon, and trout and Parasite-S for all finfish (FDA, 1998). Withdrawal time for these products was legally zero when used as permitted under the regulations. With the increased production of cultured fish in Korea, such as olive Hounder Paralichthys olivaceus and black rockfish Sebastes schlegeli, application of formalin to diseased fish has become more frequent. Moreover, there is still some concern about environmental exposures caused by effluents from fish culture facilities. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate residues in fish resulting from therapeutic usage of formalin in the aquaculture industry and to document the rate of disappearance of formaldehyde in seawater treated with formalin. Glioblastoma (GBM) is one of the most common tumors of the central nervous system, which is the most lethal brain cancer. GBM treatment is based primarily on surgical resection, combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Despite the positive treatment, progression free survival and overall survival were not significantly prolonged because GBM almost always recurs. We are always looking forward to some new and effective treatments. In recent years, a novel treatment method called tumor treating fields (TTFields) for cancer treatment has been proposed. TTFields devices were approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for adjuvant treatment of recurrent and newly diagnosed GBMs in 2011 and 2015, respectively. This became the first breakthrough treatment for GBM in the past 10 years after the FDA approved bevacizumab for patients with relapsed GBM in 2009. This paper summarized the research results of TTFields in recent years and elaborated the mechanism of action of TTFields on GBM, including cell and animal experimental research, clinical application and social benefits.
An analytical method for the simultaneous determination of 9 quinolones (QNs) in porcine, chicken, and bovine muscles was developed and validated using liquid chromatography-fluorescence detector (LC-FLD). The samples were extracted using a liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) process. Chromatographic separation was achieved on a reverse phase $C_8$ column with a gradient elution using a mobile phase of 200 mM ammonium acetate buffer (pH 4.5) and acetonitrile (ACN). The proposed method was validated according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guideline for bioanalytical assay procedures. Recoveries of QNs were 83.1-111.9% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) below 15%. Linearity within a range of 30-500 ${\mu}g/kg$ was obtained with the correlation coefficient ($R^2$) of 0.9967-0.9999. The limits of detection (LOD) were 1-16 ${\mu}g/kg$. These values were lower than the maximum residues limits (MRLs) established by the European Union (EU). The present method was successfully applied to determine QNs in edible muscles.
Background: This study was aimed to identify the safety signals of metoclopramide in Korea Adverse Event Reporting System (KAERS) database by proportionality analysis methods. Methods: The study was conducted using Korea Institute of Drug Safety and Risk Management-Korea Adverse Event Reporting System Database (KIDS-KD) reported from January 2013 to December 2017 through KAERS. Signals of metoclopramide that satisfied the data-mining indices of proportional reporting ratio (PRR), reporting odds ratio (ROR) and information component (IC) were defined. The detected signals were checked whether they included in drug labels in the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Micromedex®. Results: A total number of drug AE reports associated with all drugs of data in this study was 2,665,429. Among them, the number of AE reports associated with metoclopramide was 22,583. Forty-two meaningful signals of metoclopramide were detected that satisfied with the criteria of data-mining indicies. Especially neurological signals including extrapyramidal reactions, represented in the safety letter of regulatory agencies were identified in this study. Conclusion: Neurological signals of metoclopramide including extrapyramidal reactions were detected. It is believed that this search for signals can contribute to ensuring safety in the use of metoclopramide.
Immune checkpoint blockades including monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) of cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4), programmed death-1 (PD-1), and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) have been emerged as a promising anticancer therapy. Several immune checkpoint blockades have been approved by US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and have shown notable success in clinical trials for patients with advanced melanoma and non-small cell lung cancer. Radiotherapy is a promising combination partner of immune checkpoint blockades due to its potent pro-immune effect. This review will cover the current issue and the future perspectives for combined with radiotherapy and immune checkpoint blockades based upon the available preclinical and clinical data.
The first vaccine against human papillomaviruses (HPV) formulated with HPV16 L1 virus-like particles (VLPs) produced in yeast was approved by the FDA in June 2006. Nevertheless, there have been few studies of the immunogenicity in mice of VLPs. In this study, we evaluated the cell-mediated immune response to VLPs produced in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. After immunization of mice with HPV16 L1 VLPs, we measured splenocytes proliferation and the levels of IFN$_{\gamma}$, IL2, IL4, and IL5. Splenocytes proliferation was significantly increased and a mixed Th1/Th2 response was indicated. IgG subtype immunoresponses were strongly induced and IgG1 titers were higher than those of IgG2a.
In this study, we investigated the existence of melamine and cyanuric acid in cigarette smoke because leaf tobacco contains lots of nitrogen compounds and they are capable of pyrolytic synthesis while smoking. The extraction and derivatization conditions of two compounds were performed according to the procedure of U.S. Food and Drug Administration(FDA). Ky3R4F as reference cigarette was smoked on ISO condition(Puff volumne : 35 ml, duration : 60 sec, Interval : 2 sec). Compared with the results Ky3R4F and standard solution, retention time of two compounds was not corresponded. As a result, we concluded that melamine and cyanuric acid were not existed in cigarette smoke.
Gene therapy is becoming a very promising and feasible medical intervention as the understanding of human diseases extends to their molecular levels. Since the first US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved human gene therapy protocol was approved in 1990, over 300 human clinical trial protocols had been approved worldwide so far. Even though some of the domestic gene therapy clinical trials also proved promising and more are awaiting, it should be emphasized that many safety aspects as well as effectiveness aspects should be considered during the development process. Moreover, there seems to be less restricted guidelines from the National Control Authority (NCA) in initiating human clinical trials. This article is intended to suggest some basis and points to consider in the development and evaluation of gene therapy products including antisense oligonucleotides pharmaceuticals.
