Determining the nutrient stoichiometry in plant organs is critical for understanding nutrient uptake and cycling in forest ecosystems. This study evaluated nutrient concentrations and stoichiometry in various plant organs (stem, bark, branches, and foliage) of species found in four warm-temperate forests in southern Korea. Cryptomeria japonica D. Don (CJ), Quercus serrata Thunb. (QS), evergreen broadleaved tree species (EB), and bamboo spp. (BB) were destructively sampled to measure nutrient (C, N, and P) concentrations in the plant organs. The mean C concentration in the stem was significantly higher in CJ than in QS, BB, or EB, whereas the C concentration in the foliage was the lowest in BB. The mean foliar N and P concentrations were higher in BB than in EB or CJ. The mean stem C:N and C:P ratios were highest in CJ but were lowest in the foliage of BB. Overall, stems of all species showed a strong positive correlation between C concentration and dry weight, but a negative correlation between N and dry weight. The N and P concentrations of foliage and bark were strongly correlated, whereas those of the stem and branches were poorly correlated. Positive correlations were detected between the C:N and C:P ratios in bark and foliage. These results indicate the existence of intraspecific differences in nutrient requirements in warm-temperate forest species and add to the understanding of nutrient uptake and storage patterns in the organs of species growing in warm-temperate forests.
The seasonal flower, leaf and fruit color characterlstics of deciduous woody landscape plants were investigated through the field survey in Suwon, Korea from January 1, 1992 toMarch 20, 1993.The results were as follows ;1. There were 12 cases in the combination of leaf spreading, anthesis, deblossom, fruit coloring, fruit falling, fall foliage coloring and leaf falling of deciduous woody landscape plants(163 spe-cies) investigated. And species of the leaf spreading, anthesis, deblossom, fall foliage coloringand leaf falling were 71(43.9%). And species of the leaf spreading, anthesis, deblossom, fruit coloring, fall foliage coloring, leaf falling and fruit falling were 40(24.5% ).2. The total continuing period of the flowering, fall foliage coloring and fruit coloring of decid-uous woody landscape plants(79 species) investigated varied from 2 months to more than 9months. And the species over 3 months below 4 months were 23(29.2%).3. There were 24 cases in the combination of color of flower, fall foliage and fruit of deciduouswoody landscape plants(79 species) investigated. And the species of the white flower, red fall fo-liage and red fruit were 16(20.3% ).
This study was carried out to investigate the plant growth of various foliage plants affected by the amount of nitrogen application. There was not an accurate criterion for fertilization to each foliage plant. Moreover, the foliage plants grow slowly during the early stage and this period must be shortened for commercial production. Ficus benjamina, Hedera helix, Philodendron tatei, Rhapis excelsa, and Spathiphyllum spp. were used in this experiment. Nutrient nitrogen concentrations were 120, 150, 180, and $210mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ (N1, N2, N3, N4) and they were based on the Sonneveld solution. Plant height and width, leaf number, leaf area, fresh and dry weights of shoots were measured for 8 weeks to compare the responses to the different treatments. The nitrogen contents of various plant parts were also analyzed. The growth of Ficus and Hedera was improved at the N1 treatment and that of Philodendron, Rhapis and Spathiphyllum at N4 treatment. The required amounts for nitrogen nutrients were different among the various foliage plants. The nitrogen treatments had no effects on SPAD values and there were no correlations between nitrogen treatments and nitrogen contents of plant parts. Therefore, the various foliage plants should supply with each proper nitrogen treatments to grow faster with better quality. In this case, the plant growth played a more important role than nitrogen levels of plant parts in deciding the proper nitrogen levels for each foliage plant.
This study was conducted to investigate the plant-parasitic nematodes of ornamental foliage plants, citrus orchards, and tea plantations from July to December 2022. As a result of the investigation of plant-parasitic nematodes in 415 foliage plants, root-lesion nematodes were detected most frequently, followed by root-knot nematodes, pin nematodes, and other nematodes. In tea plantations, spiral nematodes, cyst nematodes, and root-knot nematodes were detected. Citrus nematodes, ring nematodes, and root-knot nematodes were discovered in citrus orchards. In foliage plants, tea plantations, and citrus orchards, the detection rate of plant-parasitic nematodes was not high, but root-lesion nematodes were detected. Therefore, it is necessary to apply appropriate control methods to manage root-lesion nematodes during the cultivation of foliage, tea, and citrus plants.
Some ecological attributes of perennial plants and Pb contamination were analyzed for study plots near an entrance of Nevade Test Site at Mercury Valley, Nye County, Nevada. The surface of the desert pavement soil was composed of stones (1 to 4cm diameter). The underside of each stone was coated with coarse and fine sand (about 90%). The profiles of soil were constituted with the A-horizon and C-horizon only. The soil pH at the plots ranges from 7.6 to 8.5, C/N was 13 and cation exchange capacity showed 15me/100g. Nine species and 42 number of individuals were found in all plots. Franseria dumosa and Larrea divaricata were dominant species. The discrete clumps of vegetation were consisted of 9 species of common perennials and these were covered about 25% on desert pavement, on the other words, bare area without vegetation was about 75%. The size and spacing of the plants was irregular. Community coefficient as comparison between shrub species in these study area and those in near the low elevation desert indicated a low degree of similarity. Density, cover and productivity in the study plots as compared with those in the nearest study areas in Mercury Valley showed a higher value. The soils in the studied area involved high heavy metal contents in the plant tissue was higher than those of its soil. The leavds of Lycium andersonii tended to accumulate more Zn and Mo than those of the other species. Larrea divaricata leaves accumulated very high leaves of Fe and Ephedra nevadensis were generally high in Mn. Lead contamination was apparent in foliage of desert vegetation collected alongside the roadway, reflecting the variation in traffic volume. Lead contents greater than fifteen-fold of normal (low traffic) were found in plant foliage alongside the heavily traveled roadway. Lead content of old foliage by the heavily traveled roadway was as much as 129 ppm but that of new foliage 17 ppm only.
This study was carried out to investigate the plant growth of various foliage plants affected by the nutrient solution strength. Ficus benjamina, Hedera helix, Philodendron tatei, Rhapis excelsa, Spathiphyllum spp. were used in this experiment. The Sonneveld solution was diluted to 0, 1/4, 1/2, and 1 folds and applied through a subirrigation system. Plant height and width, leaf number, leaf area, fresh and dry weights of shoots were measured to compare the responses to the different treatments. The required amounts for nutrients were different among the various foliage plants. The growth of Ficus and Philodendron was improved as the nutrient solution strength got higher, but that of Hedera and Spathiphyllum showed the best growth in the lower nutrient solution strength of 1/4 and 1/2 folds. The growth of Rhapis was improved in the nutrient solution strength of 1 fold but the other treatments did not affect on plant growth. N, P, and K were the most important nutrients that had influence on the growth of the foliage plants in this study. There was not an accurate criterion for fertilization and irrigation to each foliage plant. Moreover, the foliage plants grew slowly during the early stage and this period must be shortened for commercial production. Therefore, the experiment was executed to make up these defects. The plants applied with proper strength of Sonneveld solution grew faster and had better quality.
Ten samples were collected from soft rotted ornamental foliage plants, that were cultivated in the vinyl-houses in Taejeon, Yeoju, Seongnam, Kimhae and Cheju during 1998 to 1999. Studies on morphological, cultural, physiological and pathological characteristics indicated that the bacteria from Begonia heimalis, Saintpaulia sp. and Clivia miniata were Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora, E. carotovora subsp. carotovora the first description of bacteria which caused bacterial soft on Begonia heimalis, Saintpaulia sp., and Clivia miniata in Korea.

The earth is a huge magnet. All organisms live under the magnetism of earth. The magnetism influences the ions in the cells of organisms and variously functions to lives as well. The medical treatment with magnet has come down from the ancient, it has an effect on the plants' growth. But there are no scientific studies about the influences of magnetism on plant growth. Accordingly, the experiment about the influence of magnetism on several foliage plants was carried out in this study. The promotion of plants' growth led by magnetism will be the method to save the management cost of horticultural market by early shipment. As a results of this experiment, plants treated with magnets showed excellent growth especially in length growth. The experiment results of the respective plants are the following. 1. Rhapis flabelliformis : This have grown so very well in the container lined with magnets as time goes by. Showing the significant(p<0.05) differences, the length growth of Height and Length of leaves was especially distinguished. 2. Howea belmoreana : This has grown well in all containers. Showing the significant(p<0.05) differences, the length growth of Height and Length of leaves was especially distinguished. 3. Chamaedorea seifrizii : There have been the growth differences between Height and Length of leaves as time goes by. The growth of Height and Length of leaves in the container lined with magnets has been excellent. The number of leaves and number of branch generally had no big differences but the growth of Height and Length of leaves was excellent in the magnet container. The method of plant growth promotion with magnet should save the management cost for this reason. Therefore the succeeding studies about the plant growth under the influence of magnet intensity and kind must be performed. The studies with various plants are needed to activate the program for growing plants with magnet.
In order to investigate the effects of foliage plants on the changes of indoor thermal- and hygro- environments, experiments were carried out in two rooms with similar physical factors. Changes of indoor environmental parameters according to the existence of plants, their arrangement methods, and the existence of wrapseal for protecting the loss of water from the pot soil were measured during certain periods in winter and summer season, using Pachira aquatica which is widely used as indoor plant and has higher photosynthetic and traspiration rate than other foliage plants. The data suggested that the existence of plants didn't affect directly on the indoor thermal environment, while relative humidity increased about 3~5%, regardless of season, by putting plants which had volume equivalent to 2.4% of room volume. In summer, there was no difference in increasing effect of relative humidity between parallel arrangement with window and spread arrangement in the room, but in winter the former arrangement was more effective than the later.
A disease causing blights on leaves, stems, flowers, and pods of Vinca (Catharanthus roseus L.) was occurred in Aug. 2003 in Chengdo Peach Experiment Station. A species of Phytophthora was isolated from the diseased tissues. The causal fungus was identified as Phytophthora nicotianae on the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenicity. Sporangia were ovoid to spherical, noncaducous, prominently papillate and averaged 38.0${\times}$31.0 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in dimension. Chlamydospores were abundantly produced on agar media and sized about 30.5 fm in diameter, The fungus was heterothallic and Al mating type. Oospores were measured 23.1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size. Optimum temperature for growth of the fungus was 25 to 3$0^{\circ}C$. This is the first report of occurrence of foliage blight of Vinca caused by P. nicotianae in Korea.
