Our goal is to obtain a better scientific understanding how to define the nature and role of remotely sensed land surface parameters and energy fluxes in the heat island phenomena, and local and regional weather and climate. By using the MODIS visible and thermal imagery data and analyzing the surface energy flux images associated with the change of the landcover and landuse in study area, we will estimate and present how significant is the magnitude of the heat island heat effect and its relation with the surface parameters and the energy fluxes in Taiwan. To achieve our objective, we used the energy budget components such as net radiation, soil heat flux, sensible heat flux, and latent heat flux in the study area of interest derived form remotely sensed data to understand the island heat effect. The result shows that the water is the most important component to decrease the temperature, and the more the consumed net radiation to latent heat, the lower urban surface temperature.
A new second-moment closure model for turbulent heat fluxes is proposed on the basis of the elliptic equation. The new model satisfies the near-wall balance between viscous diffusion, viscous dissipation and temperature-pressure gradient correlation, and also has the characteristics of approaching its respective conventional high Reynolds number model far away from the wall. The predictions of turbulent heat transfer in a channel flow have been carried out with constant wall heat flux and constant wall temperature difference boundary conditions respectively. The velocity field variables are supplied from the DNS data and the differential equations only fur the mean temperature and the scalar flux are solved by the present calculations. The present model is tested by direct comparisons with the DNS to validate the performance of the model predictions. The prediction results show that the behavior of the turbulent heat fluxes in the whole region is well captured by the present model.
The purpose of this experimental study is to investigate seasonal deposition flux variations of the total dustfall and various inorganic elements in it. Total of 84 dustfall samples were collected from September, 1997 thur August, 1998 at 7 different sites in Kunsan. Each sample was analyzed by an AAS to determine the levels of 5 inorganic elements Zn, Cd, Cr, Fe and Pb. Deposition fluxes, soluble/total fractions for each element were extensively investigated. Estimated depositon fluxes of dustfall and elements in Kunsan were in the range of 37.5~45.1 ton/$ extrm{km}^2$/yr for dustfall, 43.5~81.8kg/$\textrm{km}^2$/yr for Zn, 6.6~11.0kg/$\textrm{km}^2$/yr for Cd, 44.8~110.0kg/$\textrm{km}^2$/yr for Cr, 223~323 kg/$\textrm{km}^2$/yr for Fe, 10.9~22.3 kg/$\textrm{km}^2$/yr for Pb, respectively. Thus, the estimated average total deposition fluxes of dustfall in Kunsan(376.35$\textrm{km}^2$) per day were 43.3 ton and 58.6 kg for Zn, 8.9 kg for Cd, 80.6 kg for Cr, 293.8 kg for Fe and 14.1 kg for Pb, respectively.
The soil -air exchange processes of CH$_4$ were investigated in Hari district of Kang Hwa Island, Korea during the late April 2002. In the course of our field experiments, we measured the concentration, concentration gradients (between two different heights of 1 and 5 m), and the fluxes of CH$_4$ using the surface layer gradient microm-eteorological methods. If the relationships between CH$_4$ fluxes and the relevant environmental parameters are examined, CH$_4$ fluxes were found to be affected most significantly by parameters like wind speed. The results of our study indicate that the study area behaved as a net source of CH$_4$ to the atmosphere with a net daily emission rate of 3.6 mg m ̄$^2$ The findings of relatively low exchange rate observed at our study site suggest that the rice paddy area investigated prior to planting period can behave as a moderate source of methane.
The energy balance of the surface layer of the water (the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea and the East Sea) was examined using satellite data. Variations of the net heat flux were similar to those of the latent heat flux which was more intensive than the sensible heat flux. The sensible heat flux was affected the difference between the sea surface temperature and the air temperature and was less important over the Yellow Sea. The maximum of the latent heat flux occurred in autumn when the air is drier and the wind is stronger. The shortwave radiation flux decreased with the latitude and depended on the cloudiness as the longwave radiation flux does. Annual variations of heat fluxes show that the latent heat flux was more intensive over the East China Sea than the East Sea and the Yellow Sea, while the spatial differences of the other heat fluxes were weak.
In this study we investigate 195 spacecraft anomalies from 1998 to 2010 from Satellite News Digest (SND). We classify these data according to types of anomaly : Control, Power, Telemetry etc. We examine the association between these anomaly data and daily peak particle (electron and proton) flux data from GOES as well as their occurrence rates. To determine the association, we use two criteria that electron criterion is >10,000 pfu and proton criterion is >100 pfu. Main results from this study are as flows. First, the number of days satisfying the criteria for electron flux has a peak near a week before the anomaly day and decreases from the peak day to the anomaly day, while that for proton flux has a peak near the anomaly day. Second, we found a similar pattern for the mean daily peak particle (electron and proton) flux as a function of day before the anomaly day. Third, an examination of multiple spacecraft anomaly events, which are likely to occur by severe space weather effects, shows that anomalies mostly occur either when electron fluxes are in the declining stage, or when daily proton peak fluxes are strongly enhanced. This result is very consistent with the above statistical studies. Our results will be discussed in view of the origins of spacecraft anomaly.
Because of the ozone layer depletion and global warming, new alternative refrigerants are being developed. In this study, evaporation heat transfer characteristics of carbon dioxide flowing upward in a vertical micro-fin tube have been investigated by experiment. Before a test section, a pre-heater is installed to adjust the inlet quality of the refrigerant to a desired value. The micro-fin tube with outer diameter of 5 mm and length of 1.44 m was selected as the test section. The test was conducted at mass fluxes of 318 to $530\;kg/m^2s$, saturation temperature of -5 to $5^{\circ}C$, and heat fluxes of 15 to $30\;kW/m^2$. As the vapor quality increases, the heat transfer coefficients of carbon dioxide are increased, and the heat transfer coefficients increase when the heat fluxes and saturation temperatures increase, and there was not much of influence of mass flux on the heat transfer coefficients.
Evaporative heat transfer characteristics of carbon dioxide have been investi- gated by experiment. The experiments have been carried out for a seamless stainless steel tube of the outer diameter of 9.55 mm, the inner diameter of 7.75 mm and the length of 5.0 m. Direct heating method was used for supplying heat to the refrigerant where the test tube was uniformly heated by electric current which was applied to the tube wall. Experiments were conducted with$CO_2$of purity 99.99% at saturation temperatures of 0.0 to 10.5$^{\circ}C$, heat fluxes of 12 to 27kW/$m^2$s and mass fluxes of 212 to 530 kg/$m^2$s. The heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$are decreased as the vapor quality increases and these phenomena are explained by dimensionless Weber and Bond numbers. The heat transfer coefficients of$CO_2$increase when the heat and mass fluxes increase, and the saturation temperature effects are minor in the test range of this study. The present experimental data are compared with six renowned correlations with root-mean-squared deviations ranging from 23.0 to 94.9% respectively.
With the equivalent series circuit analyzed aby revolving field theory and drawn by using the equivalent circuit constant ratios in capacitor motor with windings not in quadrature having space harmonics in its magnetic field (the above ratios are the equivalent circuit constants for the fundamental flux to the magnetizing reactance of the circuit), the equation for the alternating torque with twice line freequency in the motor is directly derived, and the alternating torque is measured with the self-made stator vibration angle amplitude measuring apparatus that is composed of a pickup, filter, photoelectric pickoff etc. The measured values satisfactorily compared with computed values. The properties of the alternating torque characteristics for respective harmonic fluxes and the r5esultant alternating torque characteristic, the effects of the alternating torque characteristics for respective harmonic fluxes on the resultant alternating torque characteristic, the effects of the variation in the motor constants and the equivalent circuit constant ratios for the fundamental flux on the alternating torque characteristics for respective harmonic fluxes and the resultant alternating torque characteristic, are made clear, applying the equation. There exist the optimum values of the motor constants and the equivalent circuit constant ratios for the fundamental flux for decreasing the alternating torque, and the value could be determined in design by the method presented in this paper.
