  • This paper proposes a high efficiency step-down flyback converter using a coaxial-cable coupled-inductor which has a higher primary-secondary flux linkage than sandwich winding transformers. The structure of the two-winding coaxial cable transformer is described, and the coupling coefficient of the coaxial cable transformer and that of a sandwich winding transformer are compared. A circuit model of the proposed transformer is also obtained from the frequency-response curves of the secondary short-circuit and of the secondary open-circuit. Finally, the performance of the proposed transformer is validated by the experimental results from a 35W single-output flyback converter prototype. In addition, the proposed two-winding coaxial transformer is extended to a multiple winding coaxial application. For the performance evaluation of the extended version, 35W multi-output hardware prototype of the DC-DC flyback converter was tested.

  • Position estimation that uses only active phase voltage and current is presented, to perform high accuracy position sensorless control of a SRM drive. By extracting the amplitude of the first switching harmonic terms of phase voltage and current for a PWM period through Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), the flux-linkage and position are estimated without external hardware circuitry, such as a modulator and demodulator, which result in increased cost, as well as large position estimation error, produced when the motional back EMF is ignored near zero speed. A two-phase SRM drive system, consisting of an asymmetrical converter and a conventional closed-loop PI current controller, is utilized to validate the performance of the proposed position estimation scheme in comprehensive operating conditions. It is shown that the estimated values very closely track the actual values, in dynamic simulations and experiments.

  • LPM(Linear pulse motor) has made linear motions by itself. And the LPM has higher thrust force ratio to mass and more wide driving speed lunges comparing with the conventional rotating type motors. However, there are the thrust force ripples in the LPM, which are produced by the mechanical structures and nonlinear back emf. It makes to hesitate the practical applications of LPM. Especially, it becomes needed to reduce the thrust force ripples for practical, which needs relative low driving speeds. For reducing the thrust force ripples, in the first place, it was built a new nonlinear linkage flux equations of the LPM. In these equations, the influence of permanent magnetic and variable reluctance thrust force components were considered. In this paper, some experimental results in the modeling of LPM are shown and detent lone and holding force characteristics of LPM are measured.

  • This paper is Proposed a neural network based estimator for torque and ststor resistance in IPMSM Drives. The neural weights are initially chosen randomly and a model reference algorithm adjusts those weights to give the optimum estimations. The neural network estimator is able to track the varying parameters quite accurately at different speeds with consistent performance. The neural network parameter estimator has been applied to slot and flux linkage torque ripple minimization of the IPMSM. The validity of the proposed parameter estimator is confirmed by the operating characteristics controlled by neural networks control.

  • A new control method for the robust position control of a brushless DC(BLDC) motor using the asymptotically stable adaptive load torque observer is presented. A precision position control is obtained for the BLDC motor system approximately linearized using the field-orientation method. And the application of the load torque observer is published in [1] using fixed gain. However, the flux linkage is not exactly known for a load torque observer. Therefore, a model reference adaptive observer is considered to overcome the problem of the unknown parameter in this paper. And stability analysis is carried out using Liapunov stability theorem. As a result, asymptotically stable observer gain can be obtained without affecting the overall system response. The load disturbance detected by the asymptotically stable adaptive observer is compensated by feedforwarding the equivalent current having the fast response.

  • A robust speed control scheme for a brushless DC(BLDC) motor using an adaptive input-output linearization technique is presented. By using this technique, the nonlinear motor model can be linearized in Brunovski canonical form, and the desired speed dynamics can be obtained based on the linearized model. This control technique, however, gives an undesirable output performance under the mismatch of the system parameters and load conditions. For the robust output response, the controller parameters will be estimated by a model reference adaptive technique where the disturbance torque and flux linkage are estimated. The adaptation laws are derived by the Popov's hyperstability theory and positivity concept. The proposed control scheme is implemented on a BLDC motor using the software of DSP TMS320C30 and the effectiveness is verified through the comparative experiments.

  • A number of techniques have been developed for estimation of speed or position in motor drives. The accuracy of these techniques is affected by the variation of motor parameters such as the stator resistance, stator inductance or torque constant. The neural weights are initially chosen randomly and a model reference algorithm adjusts those weights to give the optimum estimations. The neural network estimator is able to track the varying. parameters quite accurately at different speeds with consistent performance. • A shading ring in an AC solenoid plays an important role in reducing vibration and humming sound. Estimation of performance of the shading ring placed in a stator pole of the AC solenoid is not an easy task due to the difficulty in measurement of the current and flux linkage of the shading ring. In this paper, dynamic performance of an AC solenoid with a shading ring is analyzed through the simulation using electromagnetic analysis software and the results are verified by simple AC and DC voltage tests. Both the simulation and experimental results show that the shading ring in the AC solenoid not only increases pull force, but also reduces operation time, vibration and humming sound.

  • A discontinuity of magnetic circuits according to the end effect is generated in PMLSM. And magnetic state of the 3 phase coils becomes unbalanced. Due to the unbalanced magnetic state, the unbalanced flux linkage, back electro-magnetic force and inductance of the 3 phase coils appear. In result, the circulating current is generated by unbalanced inductance even if the input voltages are in balanced state. Then the thrust and efficiency are decreased because of the circulating current. Therefore, in this paper, the unbalanced inductance and the thrust reduction according to discontinuity of magnetic circuits are analyzed by FEA(2D). To demonstrate the validity of the analysis results, the experiment results are compared with analysis results.

  • This paper presents a new method of detecting rotor position in Toroidal Switched Reluctance Motor(TSRM). In this paper, low cost and robust characteristics of rotor position detection method are focused in order to compensate for disadvantage of existing sensors. Search coils wound around stator poles are used for detection of rotor position in TSRM. Rotor position detection is achieved through electromotive force patterns induced by time-varying flux linkage in the search coils and then adequate phase is excited for drive. The validity of the method is verified by experimental results.
