  • The paper presents gravitational effect on eigenvalue branches and flutter modes of a vertical cantilevered pipe conveying fluid. The eigenvalue branches and modes associated with flutter of cantilevered pipes conveying fluid are fully investigated. Governing equations of motion are derived by extended Hamilton's principle, and the related numerical solutions are sought by Galerkin's method. Root locus diagrams are plotted for different values of mass ratios of the pipe, and the order of branch in root locus diagrams is defined. The flutter modes of the pipe at the critical flow velocities are drawn at every one of the twelfth period. The transference of flutter-type instability from one eigenvalue branches to another is investigated thoroughly.

  • The paper describes the relationship between the eigenvalue branches and the corresponding flutter modes of cantilevered pipes with a tip mass conveying fluid. Governing equations of motion are derived by extended Hamilton's principle, and the numerical scheme using finite element method is applied to obtain the discretized equations. The flutter configurations of the pipes at the critical flow velocities are drawn graphically at every twelfth period to define the order of quasi-mode of flutter configuration. The critical mass ratios, at which the transference of the eigenvalue branches related to flutter takes place. are definitely determined. Also, in the case of haying internal damping, the critical tip mass ratios, at which the consistency between eigenvalue braches and quasi-modes occurs. are thoroughly obtained.

  • The fin of high speed air vehicle is composed of skins and strong skeletons. In the flutter analysis, the eigenmodes of a fin are used for evaluating the unsteady aerodynamic force and the modal approach is applied for solving the flutter equation in both time and frequency domain. Therefore, the proper eigenmodes used for a modal flutter analysis should be chosen. For the appropriate choice of eigenmodes, when there exist local modes of a skin in the high modes, the effects of those modes on the unsteady aerodynamic force and flutter characteristics are anlalyzed.

  • The paper presents the relationship between the eigenvalue branches and the corresponding flutter modes of cantilevered pipes conveying fluid. The pipes are located on elastic foundations which can be regarded as a soil model. In this paper, elastic foundations are assumed as linear distributed translational springs. Governing equations of motion are derived by extended Hamilton's principle, and the numerical scheme using finite element method is applied to obtain the discretized equations. The critical How velocity and stability maps of the pipe are investigated according to the variation of elastic foundation parameters, mass ratios of the pipe and internal damping Parameter. Also, the vibrational modes associated with flutter are shown.

  • A state-space method is proposed to analyze the aerodynamically coupled flutter problems of long-span bridges based on the modal coordinates of structure. The theory about complex modes is applied in this paper. The general governing equation of the system is converted into a complex standard characteristic equation in a state space format, which contains only two variables. The proposed method is a single-parameter searching method about reduced velocity, and it need not choose the participating modes beforehand and has no requirement for the form of structure damping matrix. The information about variations of system characteristics with reduced velocity and wind velocity can be provided. The method is able to find automatically the lowest critical flutter velocity and give relative amplitudes, phases and energy ratios of the participating modes in the flutter motion. Moreover, the flutter analysis of Jiangyin Yangtse suspension bridge with 1385 m main span is performed. The proposed method has proved reliable in its methodology and efficient in its use.

  • The linear and nonlinear aeroelastic analyses of a flat plate wing with flaperon have been performed by using frequency-domain and time-domain analyses. Natural modes from free vibration analysis and a doublet-hybrid method (DHM) are used for the computation of subsonic unsteady aerodynamic forces. The flaperon hinge is represented by a free-play spring and is linearized by the described function method. The linear and nonlinear flutter analyses indicate that flapping mode of the flaperon, the hinge stiffness and free-play of hinge have significant effects on the aeroelastic characteristics. From the nonlinear flutter analysis, different modes like stable and unstable limit-cycle-oscillation are observed in same flutter velocity depending on initial conditions.

  • An alternative panel flutter approach utilizing minimum angle is presented. The minimum angle is the lowest value among the angles between modes i and j at a certain pressure condition. This method utilizes eigenvectors rather than eigenvalues. Cross-ply composite plates are considered in this study. A remarkable result of this investigation is that the angle always dropped gradually to zero for all presented examples

  • Passive control of the flutter condition of suspension bridges using a combined vertical and torsional tuned mass damper (TMD) system is presented. The proposed TMD system has two degrees of freedom, which are tuned close to the frequencies corresponding to vertical and torsional symmetric modes of the bridge which get coupled during flutter. The bridge-TMD system is analyzed for finding critical wind speed for flutter using a finite element approach. Thomas Suspension Bridge is analyzed as an illustrative example. The effectiveness of the TMD system in increasing the critical flutter speed of the bridge is investigated through a parametric study. The results of the parametric study led to the optimization of some important parameters such as mass ratio, TMD damping ratio, tuning frequency, and number of TMD systems which provide maximum critical flutter wind speed of the suspension bridge.
